Customer Reviews

Love it! (no green, though?) My husband bought this for me after he forced things through my last one and bent the blades. My other one didn't have the reservoir. Love that feature! The blades are sharp and the results are as to be expected. Please keep in mind that the pieces of food you place in the chopper need to be 1/4" or thinner or you'll find yourself using a lot of muscle to make it work. It can also be quite loud. Regardless, I love it for a chopped salad or hash. We use it about 2 to 3 times a week around here. Everything goes through the dishwasher just fine. The picture shows green parts. Mine is all off-white. No biggie, just wanted to mention that. 5What Can I Say I Like It I was a little concerned after I purchased this item. However, I must say it successfully cut many items including onions, garlic, peppers, apple, eggplant and even mango and dried apricot (which was kind of tricky). One must take care to properly prep each ingredient. For example, peppers should be de-cored, washed, and then cut with a knife first just so that pieces would fit on the cutting base. It's a little tricky with softer items like eggplant. The peppers admittedly did take some prep work but I think it did save some time and a lot of hassle from having to cut them yourself. For garlic, what works for me is peeling it (of course), and then making a few cross-sectional cuts across the clove before cutting it with the dicer. This way your garlic will come out truly diced. Onions should be peeled with the ends cut-off and then halved. I did the same thing with them as well in making cross-sectional cuts. Of course you don't have to do that if you don't mind pieces of the item being longer/larger.The unit is easy to clean. I just take it apart (that's easy too) and rinse under hot water. There is a grid on the cutting base that you can pull off that will remove all trapped debris. You then just rinse the grid then and put it back on. All in all I find this to be a very useful tool that is good with saving time and very good to excellent with saving hassle. You just have to get the feel for it first and then you will see the benefits. 5My favorite time-saving device This is my second Alligator - my first did not have the handy catch-cup on top. I used the first quite often to dice onions and bell peppers for salads and cooking. I love that the pieces are of a consistent size so they cook evenly and quickly. I particularly love that I can chop an onion or bell pepper in a skinny minute. My first one finally broke - through (probably) careless abuse, the grid became misaligned - it broke my heart - I actually had to chop the onions and bell peppers by hand until the new one arrived.I love the device - and the collector makes it even better. 5Great buy! Works so amazingly.I mainly use it to make pico de gallo (salsa for the unwise). It does tomatoes great but make sure you put the skin side down or it will just smoosh the pieces.Onions? No problem. Just don't be an idiot and try to dice half an onion at once. Jesus, I can't believe people complain about some of this stuff. Additionally If you try to dice large onion piece you'll find they clump together a lot.I've got a food processor as well but now I only use it to mince things now since I find it difficult to get consistency with a pulse food chopper. This Alligator does the trick for me now. 5Not that impressive, I can dice onions faster on my cutting board then using this thing. I am not someone who gives low reviews on things, but this is just not what I thought it was going to be. When you slice an onion in half, I'm not even talking a big onion, it is all this little device can do to chop it up for you. It is faster for me to just dice an onion on my cutting board than to use this thing. Cleaning it is fairly easy, there's a little grid sheet inside that you peel out which does a good job of popping the loose bits of food out, but that's about the only ingenious good design about it I can talk about. Maybe if the entire device were longer, giving you more of an arm when you push down on the onion, maybe that would make it work better. Overall though, I would not suggest this thing to a friend. The workmanship is fine, the materials are high-quality. I will give it that! It's just the design is not all that impressive. 3Your Personal Sous Chef The original and the best. I've tried all these dicing gadgets. The Alligator is the sturdiest, the easiest to clean and the sharpest. I bought the original before it had a receptacle to catch the diced produce. Although it was very effective, I did end up with pieces of dice all over the place sometimes, so when others came out with 'catchers', I tried them. None were really satisfactory. Some have little combs to get the food out from between the grid rows--that is a huge pain. Alligator has a thin shield that fits down over the grid. All you have to do is lift it up, rinse it and replace it. One competitor version I tried broke while I was dicing strawberries for heaven's sake, and another just wasn't sharp enough to do the job without extreme force. Another advantage to the Alligator is that the square grid accommodates more than those with a round grid. I was delighted when Alligator came out with this model and I happily switched back. You need to slice your produce first unless you're trying to get more of a julienne effect, and very hard produce like beets probably isn't suitable for this approach, but the resulting dice for most things is lovely and professional looking--like having your very own sous chef at your side doing the prep. A vegetable soup made using this gadget looks stunning--all the carrots, potatoes, celery, onions, etc., exactly the same size. One would think you'd been to culinary school. It also does nice work on herbs. I have the mini-dicer for garlic as well and also am very pleased with it. Great kitchen time saver. 5Alligator with Collector I had one of these without the collector for many years. My husband especially loves uniform pieces of vegetables in sloppy joes, spaghetti, soup, etc. This does the trick. I moved the original one to the RV, and bought this one with the collector. It works great. I think slicing the veggies first as opposed to quartering them makes them prettier, but either way this is a gem. I like it when I need more than a bit of hand chopping but not as much as a food processor. It's very easy to clean. 5A small investment goes a long way.. Well, here is what my wife had to say about the Alligator:"This small device has proved to be a true life-saver. I use quite a few onions and tomatoes on a daily basis and with this little helper my prep time has been reduced significantly. The Alligator is easy to use, easy to clean and easy to store. It is sturdy and safe. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to reduce chopping time, avoid "onion" tears and appreciates the aesthetics of a perfectly-carved vegetable cube."Now, as the main recipient of her efforts in the kitchen, I can just say that I am delighted, both with the savings in time and with the output itself. Go, buy yourself one of these, it is money well spent. 5but I cannot get this stupid thing to dice anything thicker than 1/4" slices of ... I thought I was strong, but I cannot get this stupid thing to dice anything thicker than 1/4" slices of onion or cucumber---denser veg such as carrots are nigh on impossible, and the plastic feels like it will break. I thought I had done my research and picked a winner but, in fact, this is a big loser. 1Nice improvement! I bought this to replace my 10 year old Alligator as it was becoming dull. At first I did not think I would use the "Collector" as I was thinking I would have to empty is after every chop. Not so! Just dice away until you have all you need. There is no need to empty the collector until it is full. This one is much easier to use than the old one without the collector as with that one you had to hold you hand over the "grid" to keep the diced food from being scattered everywhere. No longer necessary! 5
