Customer Reviews

This thing saved me money $$$. Works on Circuit Breakers!! I was getting a spike on my electric bill than last summer. So i decided to try this on the breakers in the panel. Found out that one of my ceiling heaters were turned on which was causing the additional draw. I did not detect it coz my AC was working and cooling down as well. This unit clearly showed the temp difference of the breakers. The abnormal one had a difference of 10 degrees! I was skeptical to use this product on electric panel since none of the reviews mentioned the use on electrical panels. but it did its job! better than spending $1000 on FLIR thermal imager (I agree FLIR is fast- but I can spare couple more seconds in exchange for a $1000) 5Excellent Product Went on a energy saving binge a couple of months ago. Used this product to tell me where the leaks were. Got aggressive with sealing the leaks, changed my electricity provider (energyogre.com does it for you if you are lazy and get distracted like I do) insulated all of my exterior wall sockets and switches with Stick N Seal from Amazon, used the chimney draft stopper from Amazon, and immediately cut my electricity bill by 60-70%. I would have never believed it. With the savings on my first energy bill, I paid for this product, the Stick N Seal, the chimney pillow, and the various seals that this product identified as needing replacement, with money left over. AmazingMy only complaint is that the literature gave no indication of what was excessive heat loss/gain. For instance, it would be nice to know that with an inside temperature of 70, and an outside temp of 30, a reasonable inside temp around a door that leads outside is XX. 5Great tool to find cracks in the house and guard against cold air and MICE! Works really well. I put it to use immediately and found several spots in the basement of this 100-year+ house and found at least three cracks where cold air is seeping in. I sealed them with expanding foam and recheck using the scanner to confirmed that the leaks were fixed. Then I found a new leak and sealed that baby also. It's a valuable tool if you need to ensure your home is sealed against the cold air and mice from outside!Highly recommended 5Helps explaining to customers and residents It's nothing but a thermal detector with a flashlight. Is it worth the money, no! It's worth more. As a certified energy analyst and heat load analyst, you look for exfiltration and infiltration. This unit may not be as accurate as a $300 thermal imager but it gives residents an idea of what you're trying to explain to them. 4I'm glad I did Let me start by saying that I was convinced this product would be a piece of junk. And it kind of is.Let me start by saying that I am an engineer by trade. I have a bachelors in both mechanical and electrical engineering and I am currently working on my masters in mechanical. I work with thermistors, RTD's, and microprocessors every day. I knew this thing would be a piece of junk when I bought it. In fact I was so convinced that I had decided to return it before even opening it and buy a flir instead. But since I was going into the attic to do some air sealing before I could drop it off at UPS, my wife convinced me to try it. I'm glad I did. This is not the most sophisticated piece of hardware you will ever buy. But it is $30, and does what it says it will. Quite well actually. The poll rate is a little slow and the accuracy is a little questionable but it gives you a good idea of what is going on.Previously my plan had been to use a FLIR to take an images of my attic, address the areas, re-shoot the pictures and repeat. That still is my plan. But I'm not going to go crawling around on all fours with a FLIR to pinpoint leaks. I will however do so with this device. Foam sealant, caulking, fiberglass insulation. It doesn't care what gets stuck to it and I don't either. When it flakes out I'll buy another one. The FLIR is a broad stroke where as the B&D leak detector is the fine tip needed to make the project go faster.I would recommend it to anyone looking for this type of device. For $30 and with Amazon's return policy, what can go wrong? You will have to buy a 9 volt though. I don't know what you can do with that if you send the B&D back in. Maybe buy a closeout remote control car from radioshack. 4Very helpful tool My house gets hot when hot and cold when cold outside. I have done several things to try to keep the outdoors outside but I didn't seem to be making much difference. So I bought one of these and viola now I know what I need to work on. I had installed door sweeps and some insulation but when I checked with this tool it showed that cold air was streaming in. So now we have those tubes that go down on the floor infront of the door to block the wind. Believe it or not it really has helped keep the house warmer this winter. Little things can make a difference. I have more work to do but at least I know what rooms and areas I need to work on first. Put up window film on the windows that showed were colder too. I am glad I spent the money to get this tool. Very handy indeed. 5Find the cold air leak that is driving you crazy An affordable and very useful gadget. It helps you identify air leaks pretty easily. Instructions are easy to read, tell you what you need to know and the device works just like it says it will. This will quickly identify where you need to upgrade your seals and insulation to save you money both winter and summer. That it is a really cool adult gadget is just a bonus :) 5Good for what it is, but don't consider it a way to save money from a thermal camera. This is a quality looking product and I am giving it five stars because the price is so low, it is good as a general-purpose IR thermometer, and so it has so many uses. I do want to correct someone who said that it responds instantly. It is more like a 1-2 second response to change color, so that is far from instant. You cannot quickly scan things. It pales in comparison to a thermal camera. In fact, I am adding a photo from a $250 thermal camera that works with an iPhone 5 to show an example of insulation failure on a high wall in my house that I would have zero chance of finding with the Black and Decker. My advice is that if you have no IR thermometer, want one, and are ok with the limited temp range of this one, then get it. But if you will quickly waste your time compared to a thermal camera. 5Very handy tool at a great price I am very happy I purchased this. It is well worth the money. I used it in my attic to find leaks. Using the gun was easy. Trying not to inhale fiberglass was the difficult part. Like other reviews, I didn't rely so much on the temperature reading (nor did I verify the accuracy of them temp), but the relative temperatures when moving the gun and its colored light. For example, I would point towards cracks, and if I saw a drop in temperature, I would put my hand near it to sense a draft. 5wanted to like it I'd wanted this for so long and then it was a disappointment. Maybe my needs weren't a good fit for it because it seems to be effective for others. When I used it on windows where I could feel there was some cold air coming in, it would be a few degrees lower, as you'd expect. So didn't tell me much. And the number jumped around too much to be finely accurate. The cone in which the rays or whatever shoot out probably makes a huge difference; the aiming device should help you keep that consistent. The final straw before I returned it was when I could feel gusts of cold air in my basement coming out from around a wooden panel board that wasn't doing jack, and this thing was acting exactly like it did every other time, showing a degree or two colder. And I'm not sure how it got its reference value. I read the instructions, but as soon as you turn it on, it grabs a reference value, so I guess the lesson is to be aiming it at the right spot when you turn it on. 3
