Customer Reviews

... (and wire can holder inside) as it will rust easily! Be sure to remove water quickly (and wire can holder inside) as it will rust easily! 3As a flower pot, it's ah-mazing! I want to be very clear to potential buyers; this canner is a wonderfully big, enameled canning pot that can easily fit 9 quart-sized jars at one time. HOWEVER, there are a few draw backs:*This pot is not able to be used on glass top stoves!!! There was nothing on the page detailing this but, the instructions received with the massive beast of a pot made sure to mention this.*There are no handles to assist in lifting this pot to and from your heat source which may or may not be an issue for you.*The rim around the top of the opening has very sharp edges. 1Like the Canner I Used for Decades of Canning Granite Ware means home canning to me so I expected the same trustworthy product as I used back when I was canning for my family for 25 years. Now that I'm canning in little batches, concentrating on gourmet items, I wanted a smaller canner. This 11 1/2 quart made sense to me because it is designed for pints and smaller jars, the sizes I am now using. The first unit had a scratch on the underside of the lid, but since I had some fruit ready to preserve I canned some batches the first day.A couple days later I noticed that the scratch had filled in with rust - that was speedy. I notified Amazon, and filled out the returns form and used the canner a couple more times, then packed it up and handed it off to the delivery woman in exchange for the replacement canner, which was defect-free.Years ago I canned my pints in my larger water bath canner, but jars wobbled and fell over and sometimes the juice leaked out before the seal formed, so this time I knew I wanted the special canner designed for smaller jars. It comes with a handy jar rack that has handles designed to lift the jars out of the water, and rest on the rim. This is especially handy when some jars are filled and the rest are still empty. They can all sit in the rack, since the hot water bath can keep the sterile jars warm and also begin the warming process for the filled jars. Then when it's time to lower all the jars into the water, using the handles allows the cook to proceed without burning fingers. After processing I usually use thick rubber gloves to grasp the hot handles and lift the jars up to the high position, to ready them for removal from the canner. If you intend to also can half-pint and 4 oz. jars you might consider also buying the little half-pint rack. It will stabilize all the jars. The rack inside this canner is truly designed for pint jars. But it's all a good deal. Happy canning. 5Love it! This is great for those smaller canning ... Love it! This is great for those smaller canning jobs, when using the larger pot seams like a waste of water and energy (used to heat the water). Canning tip: Use distilled water to avoid build up of mineral scale on pot and jars. 5Very useful product. I was reluctant to order this item because of negative reviews but not much choice out there. I am happy with the pot. It arrived in perfect condition, no dents or dings. Seven (7) regular pint jars fit in the rack, if you have less than that they are secure if placed evenly around, no problems with tilting. With pint jars there was no problem with having enough water to cover the jars by 2" and it did not boil over or "spit". I seldom use a boiling water canner for quarts but I set a quart jar in the pot and it looks like you could easily cover a qt. jar with water also. I think 4 quarts would be the maximum number to do at one time and you would really need to use a round cooling rack in the bottom of the pot or a folded tea towel (which I have done many times and works quite well, have never had a broken jar). 5Makes small batch canning faster and easier. You need one of these. This canner is great for jelly and small batch canning. It is made exacely as a smaller version of the larger water bath canners we have used for years. Due to it's size it is much easier to handle and store. If you can jellies and jams get one of these. You won't be disappointed. 5Good for Starters I am new to canning and so far, I absolutely love this canner. We have used it 5 different times to can a variety of garden products and it has worked well each time. This size canner works better with pints and half pints, but you can do quarts if you are very careful to watch the water level while it is boiling. I also bought the Presto 09995 7 Function Canning Kit and have found the items in this kit, to be super helpful. I would suggest buying a book about canning (I bought the Balls Blue Book) I would recommend this canner for anyone looking to start canning. 5Can't fit 7 pints, but works for 6 I have had the bigger canner, 21 qt I believe, for years. I got this smaller one for smaller batches, especially jelly jars. It says 7 pints will fit, but I cannot get 7 wide-mouth pint jars in there. 6 barely, they will touch (5 outside, 1 in middle). I did dill pickles yesterday, it worked fine. The rack works ok, haven't tried it with jelly jars yet. Lots of room over pints for water, 1 - 2 inches of water. May spit a bit if you overfill, though. There is a fine line between too much water and being able to grab the rack handles without burning yourself, learned the hard way. I really do like it though, heats water faster than my big one, and I don't mind doing 2 batches. Many times I have 8 or 9 jars instead of the 7 stated in a recipe, so this works out well for me. 42nd one ordered. 1st one came damaged, returned ... 2nd one ordered. 1st one came damaged, returned it. 2nd one came even more damaged. Because of the size, we bought it to use to blanch large quantities of veggies. We had no choice in using the pot as we were in the middle of putting up a large quantity of corn ( did not open box until needed). The pot has several dents in the bottom and the granite is chipped off both on the outside and in the inside. It will now rust in those spots and we will not be able to use it for the intended purpose by our next blanching season. After I returned the 1st one I tried to find one that size locally so I could inspect it before buying it. I could not find one, so I reordered the 2nd one (and paid more) from Amazon. The rim and top also have dents and chips. There was no damage to the shipping box. 1Insert is wonky and probably dangerous when full; had rust spots While I always read reviews, I've never left one until now. Bought the large canner so I could fit more jars in a load when canning. Unfortunately I didn't get to open this right away, and then family issues prevented me from returning it within the short time window. I'm highly regretting the purchase enough due to the quality and workmanship (or lack thereof) to actually write a review. The canner I got is - I hope - defective. The metal insert where the jars sit is a bit flimsy and it came with one side arm oddly shaped so that it does not sit flush on the lip of the pot when it's out of the water (like when you're loading the jars into the insert). Even when just playing with it and trying to figure out what was going on, half of the time (it's even empty), it falls back into the pot on that side. Imagine how dangerous that will be when there are 7+ full quart jars in there with boiling water! There are also some rust spots on the bottom outside of the pot.I'm not sure if this was used and returned or is just defective, but I'm extremely unhappy. I've borrowed canners and made do with inserts in bigger pots I own for years trying not to be frugal and also not add one more bulky appliance to my canning supplies. This year I finally caved since our young kids eat like a high school football team and I've been canning more than ever.I'm honestly not even sure I'll be able to safely use it. I've missed the return window by a handful of days and am hoping the seller contacts me to discuss the faulty/defective issues and issue a refund or exchange. Hopefully this review helps someone to know where to look at the pot when you receive it to make sure there are no such issues! 2
