Perfect for me. nice weight and enough roughness in the inside to grind perfectly. 5A heavy sturdy mortar and pestle Looks great, is heavy and solid making crushing and grinding spices a breeze. I had another mortar and pestle but the pestle was so short and oddly shaped I had to put so much pressure and weight just to grind peppercorns. This mortar and pestle easily grinds them in seconds. Was a great buy. 5Works well right out of the box. I have not found anything to dislike about this product, but then, I don't purchase a product to look for things to dislike. i love the weight of this motar and pestle, very solid, will not tip over spilling what one is grinding. It has worked very well for grinding spices, seeds, spices to add to dishes that require ground spices. very happy and pleased with this product. 5Good heavy granite This mortar/pestle set is good looking and works very well. I have a big Thai style one used for papaya salad and wanted a smaller mortar to make small hot pepper/onion dipping sauce. I used it a few times so far and it works very good. I usually start with the garlic and then add the chili pepper. The rough hard surface really breaks the garlic and chili down fast without a lot of effort. The mortar is nice and heavy and is not going to move around. My only complaint is that I thought it was going to be bigger or at least the hole a little deeper. Stuff tends to fly out if you are pounding hard things like peppercorn. The pestle probably isn't suited for certain style of pounding also like how you would pound papaya salad with high lifting motions because I would think after awhile the pestle would chip. A wooden pestle would be better for this style. Overall though it works great for what I intended to use it for (chili dipping sauce) with less effort than my big Thai mortar. Another quirk is that the finish looks very nice but smooth and is a bit slippery when you wash it so you have to be careful not to drop it on top of your other dishes sitting in the sink or they'll probably break since this mortar is quite heavy for it's size. It is actually heavier then my Thai mortar which is wider and taller but made from nickel metal mix. 4Beautiful, functional, durable So beautiful that I want it out on the counter. The pestle is long which is what I wanted for ease of use.It works really well for pounding and grinding hard, dry spices. The grinding bowl is more shallow than expected for the height of the mortar but this allows more grip length on the pestle, a welcome trade-off. A towel can block spices from flying out of the bowl.This also means the weight helps keep it in place during use. It is so heavy that care is needed moving it around and I can t recommend it for people with weaker grip strength unless it is not moved around.We seasoned it by grinding rice until the powder looked clean, which only took three grinds.The pestle was not well packaged, as others have noted, but thankfully nothing was chipped or cracked. 5Very VERY heavy This is nice looking, and capable of smashing probably anything. I didn't look at the weight before ordering it -- 8 pounds! I need to carry it in two hands, and it's difficult to hold it up to get things out of it; I have to hold it on my forearm, and I probably won't be able to manage it when I'm older. I'm attaching pictures with it next to a mason jar and a pen, so you can see just how enormous it is. The well goes down about halfway, which means the bottom half is solid rock. Make sure you can lift a smooth eight pound rock in one hand before ordering it. I'm pretty sure if you dropped it, it would break your foot, or a tile floor, or dent a wooden one. I was, however, totally able to smash to bits what I wanted it for, so I'll just plan on using it as a doorstop when I can't lift it anymore. 4Must have in your kitchen What a great product! It's as advertised! It was well packaged and shipped in a short amount of time. The easy of use along with cleaning makes it a must have in your kitchen. I've actually ordered another one for mom for Xmas because she thought it was just a beautiful peice to have in the kitchen. This is a very sold product that you wouldn't want to make the chef unhappy with this around 5Very nice mortal & pestle for the money. It looks very nice for a budget level polished granite. It has a nice weight to it which some have complained about but at 11 lbs it is very manageable most to lift. But, I would recommend either scooping out the pulverized contents if they are a paste or use the leverage of your sink to pour the contents into a lighter container sitting at the bottom of the sink instead of trying to lift it if the size and weight is awkward for you.I have not gotten into heavy duty mashing yet, but I would have liked a felt or rubber bottom to hold its place better and soften the sound of pounding into my counter. 4great finish on the exterior and upper portion of the ... great finish on the exterior and upper portion of the pestle make it easy to use without scuffing your fingers while also having an unpolished interior for a superior grind. it also cleans easily.My only complaint is that the bottom is super thick and the bowl could stand to be a fair bit deeper because of it. it's otherwise perfect. 4BEST I HAVE USED! I like to try to make mundane dishes get a new edge to them using ingredients and tools for that help, but there are some things using a food processor is like using a torch to light a candle. The Kota brings simplicity to the experience. I made pesto and crushing, then muddling it all together was easy and cathartic. This is a large heavy duty tool that was so easy to use because of that weight. Whether you re cracking peppercorns or creaming citrus zest, you will feel in control because of the tapered comfortable handle.Next up: hummus and guacamole! 5
