Customer Reviews

this is a great product. The thicker backing makes a world of ...As a rule, this is a great product. The thicker backing makes a world of difference when you're balancing a notepad on your lap (without the benefit of a desk), the paper is a nice quality and the perforations tear cleanly. On this particular order of 6, however, 3 of my notepads arrived defective. Either the cut or the attachment of the pages to the binding was 'off' so that all of the ruled lines were at a noticable angle. It's not worth the hassle to send them back but it's distracting and a big quality gap when you're paying extra for a nicer tablet. 2Good Quality Narrow-Ruled Paper for General Office UseI've read some of the more critical reviews on this paper, and respectfully, I'm not sure I can really agree with those. If you are looking for narrow-ruled paper that is heavier than normal and tears well from the tablet, this one, for me, hits all the high notes. I use these all the time at work to make notes, develop content, draw pictures, etc. and have been completely satisfied. I have had no perforation tearing problems: if you just take a moment to pull carefully (and straight), the perforation tears just fine. And the added thickness makes it more pleasurable to use than standard paper, and I've always been a fan of narrow-ruled paper.Over the years, my wife and I have brought back from Europe paper made in France that is so high quality you can't believe it. That type of paper is, however, the work of artisans who work for companies that have been making paper for hundreds of years, and the texture, composition, and cut is something you have to experience firsthand to appreciate. These TOPS tablets are not attempting to reach that level, nor should they be, or they would be running about $150 or more for this set. But what you DO have here is very good quality paper with a moderate texture feel that is thick and useful, and at a reasonable cost. Understanding what this paper is--and what it is NOT--is the key to appreciating it! I rate it five stars. 5"Perforation" is aggravating and the red ink bleeds on the pagesFirst, while this is perforated, the perforation is so low quality that your pages rip unless you are able to pull the top page perfectly. Otherwise, you end up having to pull off the little bits of torn paper that remain. It's more like pulling paper off of an old spiral bound notebook.Second, the ink bleeds, and I'm not talking about the ink from your pen. The ink from the red lines on the page bleeds onto the other pages. You'll be writing notes over red smudges.I'd give this one star, but the paper itself is thick and quality. It's just the design of the pad that is awful.I've included a picture of what the pad actually looks like after being used for a few days. 2A little disappointingThe product description says "Designed for those who recognize fine writing tablets," so the writer of that bit of puffery (who may never have actually seen the product) is inviting comparison not to everyday office products, but to something at the other end of the spectrum. To be sure this product has heavier paper than typical Office tablets, and the backboard is super-heavy; but this product misses the mark of a "fine writing tablet" by a fair stretch. The paper itself is not as smooth and dense as one one might hope, and so ink from my gel pen bleeds just a little. The blue and red ruling lines are not especially fine, and their thickness and darkness are not consistent. A high quality tablet would have fine, consistent lines that are dark enough to be seen easily, but light enough to be ignored. A more accurate description of this product might be "better than your average cheap office tablet." It is definitely that, and I like the narrow ruling. 2No longer acceptable for correspondence, but useful for chirography practice. As others have mentioned, the quality and consistency of this paper has dropped. I use extra fine nibs, and even two years ago this paper produced excellent, reliable ink capture with zero spread or bleed, and nearly zero fade - even after 24 months. Now, there is wide variation in performance within the pad, with frequent, even occasionally unnacceptable levels of bleed, and some instances of "pulp mush" where the sheet softens so as to suddenly draw a copious quantity of ink. There were even instances with noticible variation in draw and bleed on the same sheet. Very unfortunate, and unusable, for me, as correspondence paper.Still, perhaps it's now more valuable as a resource for practice; it provides excellent opportunities to experience a wide range of paper receptivity, firmness, etc., which can be quite useful in evaluating technique, pens, nibs, and, of course, paper. 3Heavy paper weight, but line thickness is distractingI've been a fan of the Tops Double Docket Gold (wide rule) writing tablet for several years. The paper weight is top-notch and permits the sheets to feed through a scanner much better than legal pads with lighter paper.I ordered this set of pads because it's the only Docket Gold pad with narrow rule that I could find. The paper weight remains ideal. However, the lines on the pad are far darker and thicker than on the wide-rule pad almost intrusively so. It's much more difficult to read notes given the dark lines, especially if the notes have been scanned. In addition, the lines are broken near the edge of the page on a couple of these pads. While I prefer narrow rule, I will go back to the wide rule Double Docket Gold in the future due to the line thickness on this product. 4Flawless!This is my dream writing pad! I used to always end up ignoring the lines on regular paper, because I prefer to write smaller. The lines on this are tighter together than normal, perfectly suiting the natural size & spacing of my writing! Not as wide a top margin either, which is perfect. I also enjoy the texture. It is a bit heavier and smoother than common paper, very nice feel to it. While some paper has a smell that makes my hands & eyes itch (I guess it's the tree sap in the pulp?) this is practically odorless. Really if I were to invent the perfect writing pad, this is exactly what I would have come up with.Because the pages are so thick & lovely, it feels like a waste to throw one away though. If you're just making a to-do list or a rough copy, maybe use something not so nice. I definitely still like having some cheap nasty paper around too. But when I sit down to write a letter, having this to use always gives me a big smile. It's worthy of more than just five stars! 5Very DisappointingI ve been using glue top writing pads at about $1.00 per pad for the even tearing of pages, but they often come apart from their backing. I learned that Docket Gold pads tear evenly, so I bought six of them from Amazon at about $3.50 per pad. And it s true. They do tear evenly. However, it was all downhill from there.Every blue horizontal line on every sheet in the six pads ended 4 or 5mm short of the right edge of the page or had a 4 or 5mm void in the lines a few mm from the right edge. Looking at the side and bottom edges showed the blue horizontal lines and red vertical lines drifting up and down and back and forth on the pages for a variation of about 5mm.In addition, the printing on every sheet is rotated slightly counter-clockwise so the horizontal lines slope upward enough to be noticeable. In all my years of using cheap, glue top pads I never had an experience like this. When the Docket Gold pads arrived, I didn t need them yet, so I put them in a file drawer for a few weeks without looking at them. When I was ready to use them and saw what a disaster they were, Amazon s web site told me my window for returning them had closed.I ve gone back to the glue top pads. 1A Disappointing Decline in QualityI've been using these particular writing tablets (narrow ruled) for at least ten years. Regrettably, the quality has steadily declined (while the price has risen). I can tell just looking at the vertical and horizontal lines (which are thicker and less crisp than previously) that the ink from my fountain pen is going to bleed into the page -- and it does. The same thing happens with a roller ball pen (e.g. Rollerball or Pilot Precise). It also results in "show-through bleed" -- the writing is visible on the other side of the page. I happened to find one of the pads I bought in 2016, and it had none of these problems, so there's no question that the quality has declined significantly in a relatively short period. This is disappointing because the integrity of the paper was the reason I went with this product for so many years. Now I'm searching for something else. 1Top quality writing tablets with Narrow Rule linesThese are my favorite brand of ruled notepads, with a very thick backing ("extra rigid chipboard") and good quality paper (20-lb bond). This particular item has very thin ruled lines, it is what is known as NARROW RULE, with only 8/32" between lines. I didn't realize that, and would have preferred Wide Rule also known as Legal Rule, but that's my fault for not checking. It's still a great pad of paper! 5
