Customer Reviews

Don't purchase this until they do a redesign.I really wanted this to work. And it did, but not long enough. The plastic cradle that the lime green ice ball forms set into cracked... it needs to be made of a different plastic that doesn't become brittle when frozen... a really stupid design flaw. My goal has been crystal clear round ice balls. I've tried distilled water, boiling water first, ultra filtered water but then I learned it's not just the water, it's physics and the way water freezes. Long story short, this ice system has it down but it's delicate and only worked until it broke a month into owning it. $20 bucks a month is too expensive for home use. There are a few things wrong with the design. First, the foam wrap (the black thing you see on the left side of the photo) isn't large enough to actually squeeze tight around the lime green ice ball makers. Second, filling the ice balls is difficult. There is a 'stem' in the middle of the lime green ice balls to pour water into but the stem is too small for a funnel and you just can't pour water in without getting it all over the place. If anyone from Tovolo is reading, change the design of the stem to have a funnel top. Make the base out of a plastic that doesn't crack easily when frozen and make the foam wrap a little looser so it can be closed around the lime green ice all makers. So, my review says, until they redesign it, don't buy it. 1Also spheres are not perfect, maybe 90% round I didn't give it 5 stars because it takes some time to learn how to use it correctly. In my case it wont work with regular tap water, just filtered water. And freezer setting in high. And I also need to add some electrical tape to the foam to close it tight, Tovolo would need to address this issue.Once I did both things, I got 90/95% clarity. Also spheres are not perfect, maybe 90% round. Great value for the price, I read that Wintersmiths is Number one but costs 8 times this one...I dont think is worth.Watch the video and pic. 4Makes them lovely clear sphers. It worked out great for the first night. Going to try it again this evening. The size of it is a bit long and I'm not to happy that the padding around the spheres is foam. I wish it was something else, but I'm sure it works the best. Only problem I came across was, was that it spills a little when you try to fit it into the freezer while maintaining the fullness level of it. So the tops of my ice spheres turned out flat. Clear but flat on the top. 4DisappointedIce is somewhat clear, but didn't form a full sphere in 24 hours, was still liquid at bottom. Takes up a lot of space in the freezer. Don't see the value in this, especially since complete spheres aren't forming. Also, so much for not diluting my drink, these melt extremely fast compared to normal ice cubes. Decided I'd let them sit longer in fridge, 48 hours. Ice was much more solid, but nowhere near clear as advertised. Updated with a new pic. 1Two ice spheres - but neither clearIt makes two ice spheres, but don t expect either of them to be super clear. The theory is to have the top one clear and the bottom one be a throwaway. No matter how many times I ve tried, I ve never been able to get a completely clear sphere. I think my freezer freezes them too fast, not giving the air time to escape from the top sphere. I am not, however, raising the temperature in my freezer and risking defrosting everything just to use this product. If you have a dedicated freezer that runs just below freezing (I would guess ~30 degrees F), this may work. My freezer, and I would assume most people s freezers, are just simply kept too cold for this product to work reliably. 3Leaky shaker. This is a good concept but I had trouble keeping the top on and after the second use the welded nip broke too. 2All hype. All garbage. Run don't walk.It requires you to give a star otherwise it would be zero. The foam is junk. I was treating it like fine china and pieces are flying everywhere. If you look at the photos it will not "seal" to any degree. My wife said just use a rubber band. That's not a horrible idea except that this foam is such trash it just will tear it up. Tovolo wanted a gimmick to snatch a few more dollars but this system is complete junk and will leave you feeling like you got ripped off.If you look at my photos, I methodically assembled this thing. I was ensuring every green ball was properly seated and level. Again, with the delicacy of a surgeon I was carefully trying to place the foam. Pieces were flying everywhere. If you applied any force this junk would severely warp and I can only imagine coming out of the feeezer how brittle it would be. I know this will produce crappy product but for the sake of a follow up post, I placed this P.O.S. in my upright freezer on the top shelf.Look I get it, one can spend $1000 and get the exact clear ball we all desire. But if you go on Tovolos site and watch their YouTube it was enough for me to say, ok I'll give these guys a try. Don't make the same mistake. It's one step away from an infomercial/1-800 store product. 1NOT a cocktail shakerI purchased this "shaker" for my lake home and, unfortunately, was just not able to try it out within the return window. Head's up cocktail makers, THIS IS NOT A SHAKER! It leaks like crazy even with the gentlest of shaking so it's useless for any drink requiring a good shake with ice. Fine for stirring and measuring but should not call itself a shaker. So infuriating. 1How to make it work!I hope Tovolo reads this and fixes these. The problem with with this system is that the insulation capsule does not seal well or stay sealed. Its fine when you put it in the freezer but the second it starts to freeze the water expands just enough to slightly separate the insulating capsule and then it freezes in the wrong direction. I tried many times with distilled water, boiled water, & even tried boiling distilled water. For me spring water works best. Another thing is the directions say this freezes in 8 to 12 hours & to turn your freezer to a warmer setting for better results. With my freezer set at 7 degrees Fahrenheit it took 22 hours to freeze completely through. Im sure it would take a day & a half to freeze if i set it to 25 deg F. The only way i have been able to get the top ball clear is to assemble the unit like the instructions say then place the entire thing into a deep square Tupperware that is only slightly larger and deeper then the unit itself then stuff a rag or towel around the top blocking the gap between the tovolo capsule & Tupperware creating 2 things. 1 it keeps the mold together & 2 it makes another layer of insulation around the base while leaving the top exposed to freeze from the top down. With this trick and spring water i do get clear ice in the top ball. But is this all worth it for just 1 clear ice ball per 24 hours? And common Tovolo you named this product "clear ice" but unless I "jerry rig" your product it simply does not work. It will only give you clearer ice in the top sphere with bubbles in it but far from clear. I am also very suspicious of all the good reviews for this item. Especially because some of them say that it will freeze in 12 hours & I cannot get mine to do this even with the lowest setting on my deep freezer. Some say the bottom sphere was the clear sphere & this cannot be. The way it is designed the bottom sphere is supposed get all the impurities so it should be twice as clowdy not clear. All in all im still not sure im even going to keep this item. I hate it when things just dont work like they are advertised & i have to figure out how to make them do what they were supposed to do to begin with. I added a pic of the unit in the Tupperware. I hope this helps someone else get clear ice with theres. 2If you complete the puzzle correctly, you get decently clear ice.It is a rather involved puzzle and will take a lot of poking and prodding to get the foam outer shell to close up competely. In my freezer it takes over 24 hours to freeze sufficiently. If you do it perfectly and use well filtered water, de-gassed by boiling you will get nice looking spheres with just a few tiny bubbles near the bottom which will always be imperfect on the bottom because of the array of vent holes where the individual mold breaks free. The results are wonderful for for cold drinks, but this system falls short on the payoff for the effort required. 3
