You can tighten with a pair of channel lock pliers on the large ID, but it's tedious.Pros: works as well as more expensive onesCons: does not have a square drive for use with a standard wrench; thru hole would not accept double strand wire, required drilling out with a 1/4" drill (trivial task) 4effective, inexpensive rattched wire tensioner the tensioner has no built in means to drive the ratchet. i made a tool to engage the latching teeth. there are tools available. i didn't take note of where the tool was sold as it was more costly than the one ratchet i purchased and it was simple to make. Steel, saw, welder, time tinkering about 30 min. done. built the 60' arbor, only 3 grape vines.tensioner worked well with heavy arbor wire. 4Not bad These worked pretty well for my fence support wire. The only problem is the tension "spring" (it's not really a spring but a wire that keeps pressure on the racheting mechanism). It bends very easily and renders the crank useless, because there ends up being no tension to keep the rachet locked in place. It's also very difficult to fix it once it happens. Be careful with the wire tensioner and it works fine. 4
