Customer Reviews

NOT HAPPY!!! DISAPPOINTING!! I have owned Berkey for years and never had filter issues. I purchased these recently because my state no longer can receive direct shipments from Berkey corp due to new state law. I have primed these filters 4 times, have run the red food color test and nothing is working to remove the chlorine smell, and pink color, in the lower tank of "clean" water! Plus, the water runs very quickly through one black filter, and isn't coming out the other black filter AT ALL!! (and this filter looks like the top got carved off with a dull knife. It appears tampered with!) I have 4 days to send these back for a refund, and I'm fed up with this set. Won't be keeping!! 1... filter priming step on this filter system is just terrible and unnecessarily difficult The filter priming step on this filter system is just terrible and unnecessarily difficult. If you have a newer style pull down spout, good luck. I basically drenched my self and kitchen trying to prime these filters and still they are not primed. For $25 Berkey sells a priming kit. This is absolutely ridiculous. The consumer shouldn't have to spend more for something that you guys didn't do your jobs designing correctly in the first place. At least make the rubber priming "button" a softer rubber.Very disappointed. You guys really need to rethink this priming strategy. 1Big Berkey's Work GREAT!!! I just purchased this set of filters. All I can say is bravo.Previously, I used the Propur G2.0 filters. They were a little less expensive, didn't need priming, and "did" the same thing. I became very unhappy with the Propur filters. They did not filter more than a gallon and a half per day. I called them to say the filters didn't work and they immediately sent me new ones no questions. But even those were unreliable. So, sticking with them, I bought another set a year later because they had changed their design to tall white "candles". But, those were very temperamental and took a "looooooong" time to start putting out water at a descent rate. If your asking, "why give them 3 chances?" I believed in what they did and who was selling the product.Flash forward to now. I ordered my Berkey's, followed the online video instructions for proper priming, and BOOM instant functionality. While the priming process can be a bit of wet process it is very simple and straight forward. The only negative, was even after the 2 minute priming process, I still had to cycle the water 3 times before it ran clear. However, 3 cycles would equal about 6 gallons of water. That took these Berkey's about 2 to 2.5 hours. It took the Propur's a week to turn over that amount of water at the very beginning. They are as good as advertised so far. Time will tell on their dependability. The black filter cones need changing every 2 years. Which is awesome! Propur's need changing every year. The flouride/ arsenic add ons should be changed annually, which is no big deal as they are only 30-40 bucks. If you are looking for a great product right out of that box that is built for longevity, Berkey filters are the way to go! 5Can't get it to work I have the ceramic filters now, and wanted to be able to filter flouride as well, so I bought four of the newer back filters that came with the flouride filters. I primed all 8 filters according to the directions using my faucet which was a very time consuming task. Then I installed the filters and I may have screwed the flouride filters in too tightly. So, I watched a video and noticed that the washers need to be on the side with the flouride filters which is not how I originally had it. Nothing in the directions say how the washers should be placed. So, I removed them and re-installed them. I can't get any water to come out of the bottom of the flouride filters. I'm past the return date, so this is a few hundred dollars down the drain for me. I had high hopes because I really like the ceramic filters, and just wanted to filter the flouride as well. 1Great filters and hardly any fluoride in my drinking water now Ok. Now I'm happy. Thanks to Amazon.com customers who answered my questions I learned that the alumina powder from the white fluoride/arsenic filters does not break down (as aluminum oxide does during lab testing) into aluminum atoms. Since this is an inert alumina (often used in ceramics and even in hip implants) it isn't absorbed was the feared aluminum that causes brain damage. A knowledgable customer told me that it even removes any naturally occurring aluminum from the water, making it even contain less. He provided a great link to the Big Berkley site discussing this alumina filter. But I felt better hearing from someone who isn't selling this product, then reading and understanding what Big Berkley meant in their article. I notice my water tastes different than the tap water, Pur filtered water, and reverse osmosis water that I was drinking. I do not know what accounts for the taste, but maybe it's the inside of the stainless steel which I rinsed out with dishwashing liquid that may gradually diminish more. But it is a very good sign that my cola liquid Steiva that I like to flavor water with tastes better and is more flavorful with this Big Berkley filtered water than with water from these other three filters. I am happy to know I am still getting minerals from my filtered tap water. Drinking reverse osmosis water had felt strange in my body and unhealthy somehow. I later learned reverse osmosis pulls out the minerals we need for life. So I will see, but think I will likely have a feeling of well being after drinking this water from my Big Berkley a while. We want our water to make us feel healthier and better (not cause osteopenia and other health affects from dangerous mineral loss). I'm very happy to have a Big Berkley and these filters now. No more chlorine (which hurts thyroid) and no more fluoride (which hardens and harms the pineal gland, the body's regulator). And no aluminum, which I had mistakenly feared these would add, exchanging one form of brain damage for another. I'm so glad I was wrong and just needed to hear from some of Amazon.com's customers who know more about this than I do, and to do my own research. These may be some of the best filters around. I'm so happy about that. 5Neither black nor white elements (brand new) are working properly We always buy these for years but this time neither the black nor the white elements are working properly (right out of of the box). The water just doesn't come through with both installed and we primed each one over 4 times. The black element by itself works for about 1 day until this also stops functioning as it should (especially for a brand new element). We wonder if these were used? The water barely drips out 25% in 24 hours on some days and others even less. We can't even use the White element with it as we only have this for water in our house and it would take 2 - 3 days for one fill to produce any usable results. We'll try to buy another one and compare... 1These Do Not Filter Anything Out But Red Food Coloring! Berkey filters are very expensive for what you get. They should work as advertised. I finally got these to filter out the red dye. They have to be primed and seated correctly or they won't filter the red dye out. I was very excited to not have to buy bottled water anymore. Well, I am buying bottled water again. I tested the water with a tester I purchased from Amazon. It said the water had 247 ppm in it which was about the same as my tap water. I tested several other types of water. Rain had 11 ppm. Purified and distilled had anywhere from 0 to 7 ppm, depending on the brand. Spring water was 80 to 300 ppm depending on brand. I know some people say you need some minerals in water but 200 plus is ridiculous! The tester said ideal drinking water is 0 to 50 ppm. 0 to 100 is acceptable. I should have tested it sooner. Now it is past 3 months and I am out 137.00. I bought another set of Berkey filters from another company with the same results. I wouldn't trust gravity filters. I tested Katadyn filters which also don't filter anything out. Maybe they are paying someone to say they tested these and the results were great. This is the tester I used:HM Digital TDS-EZ Water Quality TDS Tester, 0-9990 ppm Measurement Range , 1 ppm Resolution, +/- 3% Readout Accuracy 1Satisfied with the product, but... Team Berkey,It seems like I got the short end of the stick when I ordered mine. My previous Berkey filters worked like how it was supposed to. However, this new Berkey filters are "filtering" my water way too fast. So, I did the food coloring test and it seems like it didn't really filter out the water. I called the company, but they told me to go through Berkey team from amazon. According to company representative from Berkey, the filters are supposed to take 1-5 hours to filter out 2 liters of water. Mine took 5 mins or less. I had no leaks between the filters and container. As I stated before, I used this product before and was satisfied with the product.I would like Amazon Berkey team to support me on this. 2Not nearly as good as original ones. Beware !! I have been using Black Berkey filters that I bought directly from the Berkey website and they were great. We used to love the taste of the water. I recevied white filters (instead of the black ones I ordered) and they shed a lot of white powder even after so many uses. The water has a smell to it and filters the water way tooo quickly. . Please check your product right away and return as needed.. The flouride filters came in Berkey labelled boxes but white ones came wrapped in bubble wrap without any box. Sad to see soo many con sellers selling crappy stuff here. Buy either from website on Berkey Amazon store. 1Fluoride Filters Causing Terrible Taste! I've been using my Berkey for over three years, and I absolutely LOVE it! However, when I recently ordered these replacement filters, and I installed them, following the directions to a tee, my water is now undrinkable! There is something wrong with these fluoride filters that is causing the water to taste terrible. I'm having to revert to bottled water in order to be able to drink. Very dissatisfied with these filters!UPDATE: I took out the fluoride filters, thinking that at least I'd have SOME drinking water. But even the black filters are making the water taste bad. Both sets of filters are flawed, and useless. This was a total waste of my money. I absolutely LOVE my Berkey, but with useless filters, it also becomes useless. 1
