Customer Reviews

GREAT COFFEE AWAITS EVERY MORNING !I would be less that candid if I didn't preface my review by saying that I was not encouraged by the 'mixed reviews' that I hadviewed on this product. My family has enjoyed 'Mill and Brew" coffee makers for over 20 years. When the most recent Melitafinally gave up I continued to band-aid it for an extra year before breaking down and making a purchase. The Black+Decker hasmore than lived up to expectations. We have used it daily for about a month without a single problem. Yes, I wish the cordwas 4 or 5 inches longer. Also wish the water reservoir indicator was on the front of the unit, not the side. And I do miss the LEDclock being illuminated in the middle of the night while navigating a dark kitchen. IT MAKES GREAT COFFEE. I have all settingsto make strong coffee and it does. We like the 2 hour hot plate feature. Unit is easy to disassemble, clean and re-assemble. The latchmechanism for the lid on the grinder portion is much better than all previous units we have owned. All and all, a quality unit that Iwould highly recommend to anyone. Only owned it a month, but so far, so good.OCTOBER 2018 follow up to my previous review......Still a problem free kitchen accessory. Used every morning we are home. Cannot recommend highly enough............ 5Best coffee maker ever.I can say without hesitation that this is the best coffee machine we have had in 30 years.I was a bit leery of a machine built by a tool company but it came highly recommended from a coworker who knows her coffee. The machine is surprisingly well built and heavy. There are more settings on it than I am likely to ever use but it is very easy to program. You just have to read the instructions. It is easy to use, easy to clean, well constructed and It brews an AMAZING pot of coffee. There are also settings to regulate the strength of your brew. There is none of the hissing and popping associated with other brands from the 70's like Mr Coffee and it doesn't leak! .We have not yet used the grinder feature as we still have some pre-ground stuff left but I'm sure it will be fantastic. We also save a few bucks by opting for the "used" one through Amazon.Their idea of used is a brand new machine in a slightly damaged box. It's a win!Short story, if you are looking for the best gorram coffee maker in the 'verse, get your hands on one of these beauties.I call mine Vera.EDIT: Finally used the grind feature and the brew is FANTASTIC!Do we even need her brands of machine?Lasted 2 years, 2 months, Plastic that holds spring clip on basket that connects with top of carafe snapped off. 5Poor designI am not a big review person but this machine sucks. It made a good cup of coffee but unless you plan on replacing it every few months you will be disappointed. I bought my first in March. In April it decided to take 25 minutes to brew a pot of coffee. Able to return it, sweet. Next one arrives and is working fine for 4 months. I notice the lettering on the carafe is melting and flaking off. Fine, I'll deal with it. Had heard about leaking with the unit and folks blaming the carafe alignment. Not the case. There is a overflow? pressure? opening in the upper rear of the unit. Why it's not positioned to drain into the carafe is a mystery. Instead it drains onto the burner and eventually counter. Daily. I put a tiny cork in it and it worked for a week. Then back to the daily leak. Sorry, but it had to go. Poor engineering, design, construction. 1Really great for the price - worth the extra effort of initial cleaningI like this unit a lot and it would get 5 stars but for two items. One, you can't really fill the reservoir with the nearly 13 servings worth of water you need to get 12 full servings of coffee, and two, I had to go through a lot of fretting and internet research in order to figure out how to get rid of the horrible plastic taste. I put the following in a Q/A response, but I think it's worth repeating here for buyers with the same problem:Our first pot tasted great, but the 2nd and 3rd [had] a nasty plastic-y quality that really worrie[d] me. I got rid of the plastic taste by filling 1/3 of the reservoir with rubbing alcohol, then adding 1/3 water, then adding the final 3rd of rubbing alcohol. (Not sure if it makes a difference to do it in that order, but that's what the instructions I found said to do.) Then I "brewed" (without coffee grounds, of course) half of that, then turned it off and let it sit for 20 minutes. Then I turned it back on and "brewed" the rest of the water. Then I ran 3 pots of clean water cycles. After the first pot of clean water, I could tell the plastic smell was gone. After the 3rd pot of clean water, I could tell the alcohol smell was gone. Am now LOVING this coffee maker.Full disclosure - I did that after trying vinegar, but we only had a couple cups worth, so it was very diluted in water; then alcohol, but again, didn't have nearly enough. But I think even without those 2 minor efforts, the full treatment as described above would have done the trick. As for the good points - the grinder is not NEARLY as loud as the burr grinder we used to use. The coffee tastes just as good as the French press coffee we used to make, with less hassle. It comes with a nice scoop for the beans, which has a little hook on the top; they don't tell you where to hook it, but I find it hangs nicely on the little hole in the back to prevent over-filling (but which causes over-spilling if you're not careful). It looks nice. 4Good for the price and better than the Cusinart.I was looking to replace my beloved Melitta grind and brew which finally gave out after 12 years. Unfortunately, Melitta long ago decided not to continue making their coffeemakers. The Melitta had a much better designed grinding chamber than its main competition, the Cusinart Grind and Brew (which you can still buy- I owned one for many years before stumbling onto the beloved Melitta). The grinding apparatus in the Crusinart is a real pain to clean (which needs to be to done after each pot. Also, IMO, the Melitta made better coffee). Fortunately, Black and Decker opted for a very similar grinding chamber as the Melitta. Essentially the grinding chamber and the reusable coffee filter are one unit. In the Cusinart ground coffee is blown into a reusable cone filter. A fair amount of the ground coffee ends up compacted in the grinding chamber and never makes it into the filter for brewing. The Black and Decker is attractive if your kitchen has black or stainless steel accents. It is very easy to use, and more importantly, clean. It has a couple of nice features. First it lets you adjust both the grind and the strength of brew. Second, its programable. Third it has a backlit display, so its easy to read. Fourth its easy to program and the clock is easy to set. Lastly, its fairly quiet when grinding compared both to the beloved Melitta and the less loved Cusinart. There are two aspects of this model I do not particularly like. First, the water reservoir gauge is on the side, and its very hard to see the markings. IT also does not correspond to the pot markings well. Second, the hot plate cycles on and off to keep the coffee warm. While its nice that the plate shuts off after about an hour and a half-automatically, there is a very audible click it makes when the warming plate cycles on and off every 2-3 minutes. It's very annoying if you are sitting nearby. But in the end, it brews a good cup of coffee. I tend to set the grinder to 2-4 more cups than I'm brewing to get the rich flavor I desire. Of course once you get to a full 12 cup pot, that's not possible. 4Nice! Just don't break the carafe!I like this coffee pot. It's easy to use and easy to clean and makes a good cup of coffee. As far as I can tell, it's the only grinding coffee pot that doesn't require you to tear it apart and clean it once a week so it won't jam, and I like that a whole lot. But if you buy it, be aware that the standard, readily available replacement carafe doesn't fit, so if you break the pot, you have to call black & decker for a replacement at twice the price of the standard replacement pot and wait a week to get it. 4Cool machine, but cleaning before every use is a chore.I really like that this thing grinds my coffee beans before brewing, but I also have to clean out the wire mesh basket and then rinse all the grounds down my sink before every brew. It's not a lot of work, but it does take maybe a minute of my time longer than I'd probably spend with a disposable paper filter, since the grounds tend to get stuck in the mesh a bit.It brews superb coffee, though the flavor may be different than you expect since it doesn't use paper filters (the grinder is in the same basket area that a paper filter would go, so putting a paper filter in here would risk shredding that filter if you forgot to turn off the grind setting before brewing). Metal filters, from what I gather, give a different flavor for a brew since a paper filter normally absorbs some oils from the coffee.I do very much like buying whole bean coffee, since I think it keeps longer, and tastes fresher than ground. And I like not having to futz with a separate grinder machine. So maybe the cleaning of the unit every use is only a little slower than I would otherwise spend grinding beans on another machine? Idk. I like this machine. 4Grind and brew *through* basket - Excellent choice!!First time I'd seen one like this, was Melita's Grind & Brew Thru ... because the water flows into and through the grind basket. Most "grind before" use maker grind having the grounds fit through a screen and into the filter basket. This model like the melita, is a grind and brew "thru" such that the grinding basket *is* the brew basket also. Why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5? -- this brew basket has a "handle" attached. It gets in the way of tapping the used grounds out of the basket!Other than that, this is a really good coffee maker, has a "brew strength" selector, found it slows down how fast it heats water to go through the grounds.. 3 levels of "strength", on the highest setting it slows brew time by double. The carafe is larger than the 12 cups it purports to be. Comes out to be just over 2L of water, and the water storage is big enough to almost match the full capacity of the carafe. In my old melita version.. I would fill up the glass carafe to the rim, and when the water storage is full, there's still a half inch of water in the bottom of the carafe.Grinding is quieter than I experience on my previous one, though the grind settings are a lot longer than I would expect, so don't set it based on the number of cups you're trying to make, set it for less ..Can't rate the durability, just got it ..Highly recommend this type of coffee maker.. and at this price, this one packs the best bang for the buck!! 4Leaks water!! \This coffee maker worked well for a few months, but is now leaking a cup or more of water all over the counter each time I use it. I believe that the steam is condensing somewhere and leaking out before it gets to the coffee grinds. This creates a mess and leads me to not using the machine. I am very disappointed in Black & Decker over this issue, as it should have been easily discovered in product testing and repaired before they started selling these. Many, many people are complaining of the same issue.***Update: Black and Decker replaced the faulty coffee maker with a new one that did not leak. It worked for a year, and now the replacement leaks water just as fast as the old one. 12 cups results in 8 cups of coffee and 4 cups of water on the counter. Junk. 1Good coffee but a pain to clean. It makes good coffee and works as advertised. However, I personally find it to be a pain to clean the basket every time. Because the basket is usually wet from cleaning when I grind the beans the ground coffee sticks to the sides of the basket as well as the lid. There is a piece that comes off the lid that allows for easy cleaning but again this must be done nearly every time you make coffee. Another very minor complaint is that it is somewhat slow compared to other drip coffee makers. It does not beep or make any noise when the coffee is done you just have to check on it. It does have a timer on the display that tells you how long the coffee has been done. The upside is that the coffee is good every time. Another benefit was that it was at the time I purchased it significantly cheaper than other models that had built in grinders. 3
