Customer Reviews

Works Great, Great Warranty to Boot, Who Knew?Has worked great, fantastic suction. More than enough battery life. The young grand kids even get a kick out of using it.Then it died. Yep, exactly one year after I had purchased it, kaput. Would no longer charge. I looked up the invoice, clicked on warranty, saw that it has two years, then Googled BD repair facilities, had one 3 mile down the road. Brought it in at 8 am the next day, nice gentleman took my info, took the unit and said I would be receiving a new one as they don't repair these types. This was a Friday. On Tuesday the door bell rang and I saw UPS driving off. The new one was delivered. Fantastic and EASY return process. Thanks B+D. Enjoying my new vacuum, works fantastic. 5It has been a good vacuum until it stopped workingI hope someone from Black and Decker is monitoring these comments. My vacuum died after about 6 months of use. It has been a good vacuum until it stopped working. At this time I would not recommend this product as the quality seems not so good. 1I'm pretty impressed. I've only had this vacuum for a ...So far, I'm pretty impressed. I've only had this vacuum for a week but it certainly does a good job. I've had a cheap hand vacuum in the past, and it worked well but was nothing special. You realize immediately when you turn it on and hear it start to go, it's got a LOT more power than your standard hand vacuum. The thing has some serious pull and doesn't leave anything on the ground as you go over it. It seems to have no trouble with most small size items, the opening is a pretty standard size as a normal hand vacuum, and it's really thorough with the small stuff like dust.I subtract a star for the design of the debris catch and the filter. This thing does a great job picking up pet hair, but getting the pet hair out of the device and into the trash can isn't as easy as opening it up and turning it over. The debris catch is small with a large filter in the middle, so hair gets wedged between it. I'm not so prude I can't reach in to pick out the hair that's stuck, but I'd certainly prefer not having to do that. Also, though the filter is effective, it seems really easy to get large dust/sand particles stuck inside the housing of the filter. It's another step to access the filter to empty that out, and certainly not something I want to have to do after every use. Will see how this product does over time, and I'll update. So far it seems to be a top of the line handheld minus the few issues I mentioned. 4Didn't last a year with low use The motor in the cylinder of the device dislodged 11 months after buying it, creating a sound and an odor of burning plastic. We had it at our vacation home so we didn't use it much. I would not recommend it as it didn't last a year. 1Ended Up in the Garbage...I thought this handheld vac was awesome for the first 2 months then it went downhill from there. After 2 months the cheap plastic hinge broke off so I used duct tape to act as a makeshift hinge (see the pic) from then on. Well that worked for the next 8 months until the battery apparently came to the end of it's life and would only stay charged/on for less than a minute. So in roughly 10 months this Black and Decker handheld vacuum became useless and a piece of trash. So Black and Decker has a 2 year warranty on this but I didn't feel it was worth my time and money to drive 20 miles just to drop it off to get repaired. So in the trash this Black and Decker vacuum goes! Never again will I buy anything from this company. 1The trick to making this device work (and my other recent vacuum purchase which I highly recommend) is a good and quick way to cUpdate: 5/23/16 I changed my rating from 4 stars to 1 as the door for the vacuum fell off yesterday. I've attached a couple of photos. While the vacuum performed well and actually beyond my expectations it pains me to knock it down to 1 star. However, the door that fell off is obviously a critical part to the vacuum. If you look at the second picture with the close up of the two pieces of plastic that hold the door on you'll see that both sides snapped off where the plastic knobs fit into door. It looks like this was under engineered and under reinforced for such a critical component. The door needs to open multiple times during each use as the user unloads the garbage and then continues on so in reality this is the most used moving part on the entire machine and should have been built to withstand the abuse. Now comes the fun part of trying to get Black and Decker to fix or refund the vacuum.I was going to return this when I first got it since the suction was much lower than expected based on other reviewers claims and the manufacturers claims of strong suction. However, after use it turns out it has enough suction to get the job done. We have 1/4" shag carpet and stairs and this will clean up the visible stuff. The trick to making this device work (and my other recent vacuum purchase Eureka AirExcel Compact No Loss of Suction Canister Vacuum, 990A which I highly recommend) is a good and quick way to clean it. The manufacturer tells you to tap out the garbage and if needed was the hepa filter. While this will work it will still leave small dust and debris in areas that will require tweezers or pliers to get out. Washing the hepa filter requires drying which takes time. The answer is a blower to clean it. I bought this one a while back for my wood working Milwaukee 0884-20 M18 Compact Blower (Bare Tool) (I have big blowers, shop vac's, large wall mounted cyclone vacuum) and it is great for quickly cleaning this and the Eureka AirExcel. It'll blow out all the gunk stuck in the hard to reach places and blow the hepa filter clean. It's so easy that I clean after every use and sometimes after every few minutes during a big clean. So, a couple of other things about the vac. After the first charge I cleaned the stairs and our upstairs living room carpet on one charge. I've never had it run out yet. I've left it off the charger for a couple of days and it ran fine so not battery drainage going on when sitting idle. The biggest plus is my 6 year old thinks it's fun cause it's light and easy to operate so I'll find her cleaning with it without asking. Hope this helps someone out there make up their mind on this product. 1Exceptional hand vacuumThis BDL2000PL battery powered hand vacuum surpasses the Dust Busters of the past by a mile, even the higher voltage ones that had replaceable batteries. Those Dust Buster replacement batteries cost as much or even more then the vacuum did.I purchased this vacuum in Dec 2015, it's now March 2018. No regrets buying this vacuum. the vacuum still has great suction and the battery holds up well. Probably because it is no longer powered by NiCad batteries.Nice that the base can be mounted on the wall in your laundry room where I installed ours. You will learn to clean the filter and empty the dirt compartment regularly. Easy to empty the dirt compartment but also to easy to forget to clean the filter which takes some time to do. A sign filter needs cleaning is you will notice that the motor runs faster then normal. Imagine running the vacuum and then place your hand over the intake of the vacuum, motor speeds up.B&D claims this vacuum has cyclonic action to distribute the dirt all around the pleated filter which it does pretty well with small dirt particles but big stuff will stack up on top of the filter right where all the dirt comes in and not distribute around the filter so you really need to empty the filter chamber then. You may need a slim object like a screw driver to dislodge the big junk in front of the filter.Sand--you will find that sand will fall back out the vacuum opening when tilted down because the check valve is not that great so best to simply empty the dirt chamber.I have an air compressor so it has been easy to clean the removable filter. If no compressor it can be cleaned with garden hose spray or sink sprayer if you don't mind getting what was on the floor into your sanitary sink.I would buy this vacuum again. 5This product has DESIGN FLAWS!!!! THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU BUY!This product has design flaws and really frustrates me after 40 days of use. I picked this one due to great customer rating, now I regret I did not return it earlier as it has pass 30 days. Despite all the "cool" functions such as rotating nozzle, powerful suctions and Lithium battery, there are some headaches to deal with using this vacuum:1. I use this vacuum mainly to clean out carpet on my car. I found out the the dirt or sand always get in the joint of pivoting nozzle. This leads to sticky joint and makes sound when I adjust nozzle angle. Dirts also by pass two filters and get in the motor. I opened the motor cover and found out the O ring is oversized. It is NOT sealing the motor from dust!!!2. Sand always get caught and stuck on the pre-filter, I used brush to try to get it off but failed. It is just a pain to clean pre-filter. Whoever designed this, please use you BRAIN!!3. The button that open the dust chamber gets stuck sometimes. I have to hammer it in order to get it loose.Anyways, this product is not properly engineered and does NOT last. I wish I saw all the bad reviews before buying this product. Think TWICE before placing your order.Attached photos shows the OVERSIZED O ring! 1How this vac went from 5-stars to 1-star I was very impressed when I first reviewed this product back in April of 2014 and for good reason. There are several design features that are quite positive. When it worked it did a better job than any of the cheap dustbusters maybe not in the league of a Dyson or Hoover but considering the price I liked it.Then one day while it was still within the warranty period it just stopped dead. I thought that was unusual, because one of the main features (so I though) was the Lithium Ion battery which supposedly has a longer expected useful life than NiCad batteries. I checked the voltage on the charger unit to make sure it hadn t failed but it was providing exactly the right amount of power to the vacuum. I checked the terminals on the vacuum itself, and they were clean. But it simply would not take a charge. Then I smelled a burnt odor coming from the battery compartment. That was the problem - the battery essentially started on fire and exploded inside (fortunately no one was using the vacuum at the time so there were no injuries). I was concerned but I felt confident Black+Decker would be eager to help.So I contacted Black+Decker s customer service and received an immediate confirmation email with a case number and was advised a rep would contact me within 24 business hours. Days went by and I didn t hear anything so I sent a follow-up including my case number. Black+Decker responded 11 days later with a new and different case number but ignored my first inquiry. I tried again and they ignored me. I never could get them to even reply to me and eventually the warranty ran out and the chance of ever getting the vacuum repaired evaporated. Now recently there is non-stop news about a certain cell phone with an exploding Lithium Ion battery that is injuring people, burning down buildings and even being banned by the airlines. I was lucky my vacuum s battery didn t cause any serious harm but I think what could have happened if I had not been at home and unplugged it before anything happened.Whether this is a well-designed vacuum with cool features or not is no longer the point. There are plenty of positive (and negative) reviews about features. Now this vacuum has two significant strikes against it a potentially hazardous battery and a company that ignored the problem. I will be reporting it to the proper authorities in case a recall is needed but I CANNOT recommend this product and until Black+Decker publicly addresses the issue I had with the battery I would hope Amazon pulls it from their listing. 1Disappointing, extremely disappointingUPDATE- the more I use this the more angry I get that we spent so much money on such an awful product. We don t have that kind of money to waste and this was such an awful product. I expected black and decker to be far more reliable! It can t hold a charge, there s hardly any suction, half the debris fall out, and it can hardly manage to vacuum up dryer lint! I desperately wish I could return it!Don't get me wrong, this hand vacuum works... but we could have gotten one for half the price we paid for this one (close to $70)For such an expensive hand vacuum I expected something much better. First of all, the suction power is weak (and it didn't just wear out over time because it's still fairly new) this thing can barely suck up fine beach sand...second the little flap that's supposed to keep the dirt in the chamber is constantly getting stuck open (regardless of what's being vacuumed up.)Third it often "spits up " debris that were already vacuumed up (even when that flap is closed properly and no matter how empty it is)And last it doesn't hold a charge longer than 25 minutes even though we left it on the charger for over a day when we first got itOverall yes this vacuum works fine for a little dust buster, and the pivot function is useful. However for the price I was really expecting higher quality and better performance. 1
