Customer Reviews

Works Great For Small Jewelry Projects I have an acetylene/air torch and needed something for smaller jewelry projects. This torch has been great. I have been it using for 6 months and it works every time. I had one other butane torch years ago which I had problems with and eventually threw out. I can recommend this torch for those who have a Big or Little Smith torch set up that need something for those easy to extra easy soldering jobs. Also recommend for beginners who are a little intimidated by a Big Torches or do not want to invest the money in a big set up. This torch is great for small to med small jobs. It is inexpensive, easy to use and gives you the confidence you need when soldering your first projects. 5Good product, Good price. This torch works just fine. I was looking for a small torch to use primarily for electrical repairs on cars. It is well made, sturdy, comfortable to hold and use with one hand. I'm left handed, so opening the regulator lever on top with my thumb takes a little coordination, but isn't difficult. It can be unlocked, turned on, lit, extinguished, and locked all with one hand. I really like the lock feature so that it doesn't accidentally turn on and waste all the fuel. I also like the base stand so that you can easily set it down without worry of it falling over and melting something. The fuel tank is fairly large. I have only filled it once when I bought it a month or two ago. Overall, I am very satisfied with this torch. It is well worth the money. I have used an almost identical torch which cost about twice as much as this one. 5Great torch for a beginner to soldering. I am a professional goldsmith and I occasionally teach newbies. This is an excellent torch for someone new to soldering. It's small, easy to fill and adjust, and not scary to use. It will fuse Argentium nicely, and also solder Sterling Silver and copper wire as long as it's not a really heavy gauge. I haven't tried it on gold yet. It's great for balling up headpins and making rings and earrings. I even soldered right up next to small prongs without danger of melting them, which I was expecting to happen. Even bezels were safe with the flame right next to them. It doesn't burn nearly as hot at the oxy/acetylene that I normally use, so the fear factor is removed for someone just getting up the nerve to use fire for the first time. Of course it's still fire and safety precautions need to be followed, but it's a pretty safe torch. I like the fact that it locks. Comfortable to hold too. Initially I bought it for a specific demo, but wasn't able to get the really fine, small flame that I needed. But for general soldering it's great! I reach for it often for little stuff. I still use my oxy/acetylene for the bigger items that require a lot of heat.I would have given it 5 stars but I did experience the lighter not lighting every single time as some others have experienced, but it's not a big deal to me. It is a giant lighter, after all. Keep it away from the kids!!!!Also, order the triple refined butane for a smoother soldering experience because it sputters a little when used with regular butane. I could not find it locally. Rio Grande Jewelry Supply carries the Blazer brand triple refined, but you need to pay hazardous shipping charges.Still not sure? There are lots of videos on You tube showing this torch and how easy it is to use. There's even a good class for beginners featuring how to use butane torches on Craftsy.com. 4Solid Design / Hard To Fill / Erratic Lighting I paid a little more rather than buy the generic torch and Blazer has been around a long time. They charge more and I expect more. The overall design of this torch is good, and it does a great job of igniting my BBQ pellets. The components appear to be durable, but I have a couple of issues that keep me from recommending it higher.I bought Vector quintuple filtered butane. The Vector's nozzle doesn't fit very well with the Blazer's fill port. The Vector nozzle appears to be the standard metal butane nozzle, so I'm not sure why it doesn't fit well, but a lot of gas get's wasted when filling this torch. Additionally, there's no fuel window so there's not much to go on other than sound and gas spraying when it's full. The problem I had was gas spraying the whole time I filled it. I tried to get it to seal when pushing down, but no luck, just spurting, sputtering, spraying. The other problem I am having is with the piezo lighter. It's inconsistent and I expect better from a brand new torch. Make sure you adjust the black ring in front of the gas switch. It's to adjust the air/fuel mixture. I just keep the holes aligned. If you still have trouble lighting just blow once on the end, gas off of course. You don't actually have to put your mouth on it :), then give it a try. It's an old trick for torch lighters I learned as a former cigar store owner. My Blazer still takes five or six clicks to light, not good.I wish Blazer did a better job of quality control or put a more robust ignitor on the thing. Someday, one of these companies will put more engineering into the ignitor. 3Short life Bought the Blazer GB4001 August 20, 2015 with 30 day return policy; this review was written Nov 13, 2015 close to four months had past when the Blazer nozzle failed by becoming leaky (when bringing the nozzle near my ear I can hear the slow hissing sound). Obviously the flow nozzle has reach its heat resistant short life potential. Never bought a torch before and with a hefty price tag thought I was buying a quality torch that would last years, so needless to say am drastically disappointment at it's flawed design and craftsmanship. Time to move on to another make and model like ProTorch which also has a hefty price tag but what sets it apart from the Blazer is a Two year guarantee. Haven't read the policy yet nonetheless a 2 year guarantee sounds better then 30 days. 2Outstanding performance for vape tasks I need a torch for vape-related work, such as heating coils, torching stainless steel mesh and wick, and other similar tasks. I started off initially with one of those cheap $8 torches that looks like an oversized lighter. It sort of worked, but the flame adjustment was poor, it was hard to light, and the flame would often go out. After looking at a few options, I went for the Blazer. I narrowed it down to this model and the 2001 model. I opted for this due to the lower price, plus the fact that the flame length is shorter and better suited to precision work.Very, very pleased with it. It lights on the first spark each time, the flame can be easily adjusted, and the foot keeps it steady for no-hands use. The build quality is solid, with mostly metal construction. The locking button is a plus as well to ensure zero gas flow when it s being carried in a toolbox or in a bin. While it may seem like overkill for simple torching tasks, a good tool makes the job so much quicker and easier. Huge recommendation for this for any mini torch needs. 5Excellent Area Specific Torch The Blazer is all that it promises! Nice, tight concentrated flame for area specific fire torching. It's great for soldering jewelry components & painting copper wirh fire! The torch I originally received was defective, but this seller worked with me to replace the faulty with one that works to perfection. I am most apprecitative of Prime's return &/or replacement policy & the sellers who abide by it! 5Love it so far! Recommend for those who make jewelry. Will like working with this torch. Unlike some other torches, I was able to fill this with the Blazer butane I have with the metal nozzle on the can - without using any of the plastic alternative nozzles that come with the butane. Made it a easier to fill - no spritzing fuel. Because the body of the torch is metal, I could feel the metal get cooler as the butane reached the level where my hand was holding the torch. This made it very easy for me to judge when it was full without overfilling it.The red 'Lock' switch (at the back) slides down to lock the ignition button, preventing someone from accidentally igniting the torch - but - this lock button doesn't take a lot to disengage so, if you have kids of any age, keep it safely out of reach. The ignition button at the back (round, metal) has to be held in while lighting the torch but, once lighted, you can let go of the button and it stays lighted. Does take some pressure to engage this. On my old MicroTorch, there is a separate switch to lock the torch on; it is turned off by pressing the ignition button once...I'd prefer this but - for me - the way the Blazer functions isn't a problem. The red 'slide' switch at the top adjusts the amount of butane being fed. With the torch pointed away from you, right to left, it is - to +. The torch is turned off by sliding this all the way to the minus sign. Just have to be certain it is fully to the minus sign or it might leak butane. I haven't had a problem so far.Lights as it should every time I fire it up and is hotter than my many years old MicroTorch, which is what I wanted. 5Spend your money elsewhere. The igniter on this model is problematic. It worked OK for a year. Once it's lit it works fine. Good flame control and the air mixture is a nice feature, but getting it lit was always hit and miss. After a year or so the piezo never puts out enough spark to light it and since it's out of warranty it'll cost me almost as much to fix it as it cost to buy.Too bad. I bought this because it was heavy, looked well built, and had a great flame. But the constantly fussy and failing igniter makes it no better than cheaper throw-away models. 2Inconsistent results This was a 2nd unit for me as my son left the last one out in the rain, and it was ruined. Having that said, I now have experience with 2 of these, and the first one was by far better than the one I have now. I guess it's some kind of quality control issue as they operate very differently. Also, I thought the first one was so great, I purchased the exact one again. The flame will not allow a low setting as it completely extinguishes itself when you go below half... Disappointing, the first one didn't do that. The second unit is a lot harder to ignite too. Again, not so with the first one. Maybe I got a defective one, I'm not sure - but unfortunately, I would not recommend this mini torch, nor world I but another. 3
