Customer Reviews

The perfect shovel for my needsIts about as close to the perfect shovel as you will find. It may be overkill in design for some, but without a doubt it's a heavy duty shovel and wont disappoint. There is some confusion in how the 12 and 14 gauge round point shovels are displayed here on Amazon. Both shovels have red handles. I'm not certain if this is a recent change but amazon shows the 12 gauge with a blue handle, it was delivered with a red handle and the correct thicker 12 gauge steel. No worries here but if you're expecting a blue shovel, you may get red.Don't feel a need to get the thicker 12 gauge. If most of your work is around the house, the lighter and durable 14 gauge shovel is just fine and may be a better choice. The weight of the 12 gauge shovel is noticeably heavier in your hands but the perfect shovel for my needs. 5Blunt but powerful. The spade is blunt and thick, but I'm a hefty man at 330lbs and 6'4 and sunk through gravel/dirt that made digging with typical shovels a miserable burden. This can trench quickly and lift out heavy loads without issue. I have used it to dig/pry out ash tree roots with great success. I have gone through maybe 15 shovels in the last decade but I think this investment will really stand up to the torture I put on my shovels. I highly recommend. Also, I have not sharpened it as I don't really feel the need, but you definitely could if you desired. 5The reviewers make this seem like the greatest shovel everA bit confused on something. The reviewers make this seem like the greatest shovel ever... gotta admit, i've seen a lot better quality in local stores and everywhere else. I took this out of the box and almost cut my hand. The rivet used to hold the shovel portion to the pole isn't seated all the way in (poor quality). There are sharp pieces of the rivet sticking out that can grab you (i did scratch myself a few times). Very dangerous as it's very sharp. Another thing is one corner of the shovel where you put your foot has a very fine point and can scratch/cut you if not careful. The shovel has scratches on it but I don't care about that, it's a shovel afterall. But the portion where you may grab, having very sharp metal fragments from the rivet? That's just bad bad bad. I wonder if people got a free shovel for raving reviews or got a lot of money back in exchange for a big review. I sell on amazon and get companies who do just that so ya never know. But this is an honest persons review. It's a shovel, it's a good size, has a good feel but has a bunch of dangerous points where you can really hurt yourself. Debating sending it back although I don't want the hassle BUT at the same time why should I have to pay good money for something that can hurt me. 2Almost 5 stars - - read whyThis is a SUPER heavy-duty shovel, VERY heavy gauge metal, superb handle/shaft, and ready for some really tough work. So why only 4 stars instead of 5?The joint where the shank meets the shovel blade is just too tiny. It's nicely welded, and under normal use there would be no problem. But a shovel like this doesn't get "normal" use, and people (me included) are going to be prying with it and leaning and heaving on that handle. And it's going to break right at that one-inch-long joint. I can't believe they reinforced the back side of the shank so nicely and then just butt-welded the shank onto the blade.Oh well, I have a nice little MIG welder and I welded on a reinforcement from the shank to the blade. This takes all the stress away from that joint in prying operations, and now this shovel should truly last me a lifetime. This entry won't allow upload of pictures of the modification. Try this link:divver-city.com/miscfiles/bully-shovel.jpg 4Wow, what a shovel! In my lifetime, I have used many shovels - none of them were mine. Wood handles, dulled tips from rocky soil - I've never had a chance to buy my own shovel. Now as a new homeowner, I realized I needed my own for the first time. This bad boy is awesome! Super heavy metal has enough weight to drive itself; the bar is lightweight, and the handle super sturdy. Overall the weight is no different than a typical shovel as a result, but better balanced for an easy time driving into the ground. This is gonna last me a lifetime of usage. 5FAN-FRIGGING-TASTIC shovel! This shovel is "the one shovel to rule them all".The blade is thicker than almost any other shovel, the "I-beam construction" actually does make an impressive difference in strength, it isn't too heavy, the D-handle is shatterproof, what more could you possibly want?I abused the heck out of this thing, using it to dig up (and pry out) large roots. It appears to be indestructible.LOVE IT. 5Not so "Bully"I am not a big super strong guy (~160 lbs. ) This shovel failed while digging a medium shrub that I had already sawzall-ed the roots free. The neck just folded. I was only using my hands to pry and not very hard at that. I used to have an Ames black beauty shovel that I could stand on the handle and pry. I gave it away at one point and unfortunately they don't make them anymore. This is no better than any big box shovel. Trying a King of spades next. 1Heavy gauge, but does "made in USA" really mean quality? It's a sturdy shovel no doubt. The fiberglass handle seems too small a diameter for a shovel, but it works. However, the build quality while sufficient for a shovel, leaves a lot to be desired in the welding dept. I'm sure the bead penetration shown in photo is good enough for shovel use, but it is far inferior to a Fiskars China made shovel I also ordered. The Fiskars looks like it was welded by NASA. The Bully? Well, it reminds me of junior high school shop welding class.Update. Bumped it down a notch. The fiberglass is already splintering. We returned and going back to Seymour products. 1Poorly engineered. Razor sharp rivets on handle - BEWARE!There is an old saying, "Anyone can build a bridge that stands, but it takes an engineer to build a bridge that barely stands." This shovel is in no way well engineered. There is nothing cleaver, revolutionary, or even satisfying about this shovel. It feels heavy because of the bad balance. The makers decided to weld everything instead of spending more to form/press thicker or higher quality steel. It looks like thick sheet metal welded together with a few RAZOR sharp rivets sticking out. Bully Tools need to make sure they have a lawyer handy for the injury lawsuits. I could live with the bad design, but the rivets are unforgivable. When Spring comes around I will see how good this shovel does against roots and tree stumps, after I fix the rivets. 1Extremely STURDY ShovelI am a bit "old school" when it comes to wooden handles on yard tools. This is my first such tool with a fiberglass handle, but I am very satisfied with both the handle and the metal spade. When a new wooden handle was no longer sufficient to restore my 40 year old, very faithful shovel to working condition, I looked locally for a replacement, but everything was junk. even so-called "contractor" tools. Doing some online research, I read the positive reviews on this one and decided to give it a try, even if it meant taking the leap to a fiberglass handle. I live on a rocky acre in Northern Nevada and use a shovel frequently to move dirt, dig holes for planting, and dig and pry around native "brush" to keep the lot thinned. After a year and a half of use, this shovel has done every thing I have asked, and I would highly recommend it. 5
