Customer Reviews

Great coffee at a great priceThis is one of the best coffees I've ever tried at home, and better than most that I can find out and about. When I first opened the bag and put a few ounces in my grinder, the kitchen was filled by by the savory, smoky fragrance of this exceptional coffee. The roast is dark, but not too dark. The coffee doesn't taste burned or bitter and it doesn't smell "skunky" when it's brewing the way Starbucks roasts do. It's smooth up front without any acidic sharpness, and the finish is, well it's fantastic. I can't describe all the flavors in the finish (nutty, smoky?), but after each sip things just keep getting better and better.Be forewarned, this is not a small bag of coffee. Typical bags are in the 8-10 ounce range. This one is 32 ounces. I filled the hopper of my grinder, and put the rest of the coffee in a big zipper bag stored in a dark cupboard. The coffee kept that way for a couple of weeks with no noticeable loss of flavor. You can do the arithmetic to see how inexpensive this coffee is compared to other whole bean coffees, but by my reckoning it's about 2/3 the price for a vastly superior product. This was my first taste of Cafe Altura coffee, and I'm thoroughly sold on it. I had to go digging through my email to find the right brand for a re-order, but it was worth it. I've tried two Cafe Altura coffees thus far, Sumatran Dark and Peruvian Dark, and both were delicious. I'm re-ordering the Sumatran Dark and another Cafe Altura coffee I've not tried (haven't decided which). I expect to try them all by the end of the year. 5NOT USNavy coffee!I have been a fan of Biodynamic wine, grapes, bread, and veggies for many years now, so when I saw the coffee, I decided to try it. Normally I pay $8-12/pound for organic coffee beans, so I was hesitant about the higher price. I like to grind and make my coffee in the Turkish style (check it out), so my beans get ground into a fine powder. I like beans that have lots of flavor and low acidity so that I can boil is very strong and add shots to my milk for rich flavor (my coworkers call is high octane milk). The funny thing is that coffee has no real effect on me, except when it gives me the jitters or a queasy stomach, so I just like it for the flavor. This coffee has very good flavor. I have been drinking it for the past 3 weeks and still enjoy the rich aroma and easy feeling on my stomach.Since it is Biodynamic (& fair trade?) I know that I am helping out family farmers somewhere in this world as they try to behave like enlightened stewards of their land. 5High Quality Dark Roast Organic CoffeeThis coffee is great! The flavor is bold but not bitter. This one is very much a dark coffee. I save so much money making this at home rather than going to a coffee shop. I like that is comes fresh roasted in the whole bean. I know its fresh because some of the grounds lightly clump to the grinder when I dump them into the brew basket. I love the strong aroma of the coffee before and especially after grinding, but my wife does not. My point is you must be a fan of very dark coffee to throughly enjoy this coffee. I love it and to keep it fresh because it comes in a non resealable 2 lb bag, I keep it in a ziplock bag in a dark cupboard, one that I only use for coffee, because the light is not good for your beans. 2 lbs is large amount of coffee, depending on my amount of drinking each month of week I have had times where I have ran out before my next delivery and I have had only a half of a pound used when the next 2 lb box arrived. There are other variety of coffees from this same company but I don't care. This is the only coffee I drink at my house and will remain that way until they stop making it. I use the used grounds for composting and have no worries about it because this is organic coffee with out any nasty chemicals. 5Fine When You Can Get ItThis is a study in contrasts. The coffee itself is excellent and mellow. But in the seven times I've ordered this product so far, they've sent the wrong thing three times, once even in the replacement shipment for the previous error. I've gotten their Dark Roast version, their Decaf version, and once even their Peruvian Dark version. I didn't like their Colombian Dark Roast as much, didn't try their Decaf, and like their Peruvian Dark a lot in the dark roast category. So regarding their regular Colombian roast, I recommend the product and would give it 5 stars, but I can't guarantee that you'll actually get it when you order it. 3Tastes better then any coffee I've ever hadThis is the best coffee I've had. I went out to eat the other day and asked for a cup of coffee I've had dozens of times before except this was the first time having it since trying Cafe Altura. There was such a big difference in the taste I couldn't even finish my cup of restaraunt coffee. It tasted terrible compared to Cafe Altura. 5Excellent coffee...Made a believer out of my Father-in-Law!We love this coffee...I can't even count how many times we've ordered it now. It's just part of our morning routine now and haven't purchased any other coffee in over a year! Lovely roasted flavor without the acid that accompanies some other coffees. I make it just a bit stronger and drink it iced all day long in the summer. Love the fact that it's organic...the smell is heavenly when we grind! Makes me want a cup immediately! My father-in-law who thinks "coffee is coffee" actually just blurted out one night after dinner "what kind of coffee is this, it's REALLY good"? Hmmm, so much for "coffee is coffee", hey dad!?!?! Nuff said!!! 5One of the best coffee brands out there you won't be disappointedWe have been using this brand of coffee for the last 3 years and I must say I am very satisfied with the taste and aroma. Sometimes when we would run out we get a different brand from the local stores or just to test it out order other brands but nothing came close to this, dark sumatra being the favorite as it is less acidic.I normally dont write reviews not necessarily bc I dont always like a product but mainly due to time and forgetfullness but I recently contacted customer service to request an order of the 10 oz bags to give as gifts to friends and family who visited and would comment on how good the coffee was. The company normally does not sell the 10 oz bags but they were beyond helpful with my request. The funniest was when I prdered the turkish blend from the main website and the UPS delivery guy kept sniffing my box before handing it to me, I let him know today his coffee gift is on the way and he was so happy. 5Excellent Coffee, but make sure you can store it!!Before I begin let me just explain where I am coming from. Though I am by no means a coffee expert I have become a little more sophisticated just in the regard that I own a french press as well as a chemex cofffee maker and grind my own beans as well. Though I like some of the standard coffees out there (especially Peets), I am trying to broaden my horizons and try new coffees. I decided to give this brand a try just because I saw it was a top coffee seller on amazon and had received mostly postive reviews. When I received the bag I opened it up and it smelled wonderful. as many coffee drinkers know, opening and smelling a new bag of coffee beans is almost as good as drinking the coffee itself. As for the coffee though, it was superb. I think the best way I can describe it is to say not too strong, but not too weak so it's perfect for someone looking for the best of both worlds. also, it is not as acidic as other coffees (which I understand is a common chracteristic of Sumatran coffee in general) so that was a positive for someone like me who loves coffee, but is always popping antacids. There are a few things to keep in mind though. This is a huge bag! It's like 3 standard supermarket bags in one. so if you drink a ton of coffee a day or have a big family of coffee drinkers, that might not be a problem. However, for someone like me who is single and drinks one or two cups a day, it prevents a bit of a challenge. The instructions tell you to put the bag in a ziplock bag and refrigerate for prolonged storage, which is what I did. Two weeks later the coffee still tastes good, but not as fresh as when I first bought it and there is still over half the bag left! If anyone out there has any suggestions on how I should store this coffee other than refrigeration, please shoot me an email. But other then that the coffee is great. Just make sure you realize you are going to get a lot of it unless there is a smaller bag for sale on amazon, which I do not think there is. 5Finally a coffee that we really like..In my efforts to find a coffee that my husband and I really like, I think we have tried half the coffees on Amazon! This is finally one that we both like and will stick with. It isn't too strong, but it has a lot of flavor. Just right for us.Let me say that neither of us like a dark roast, so for those who do, this will not be a good coffee. Try the other Altura coffees. My son-in-law gets both the Sumatra and the Dark Roast, and loves them both. I had ordered one of them, and liked the flavor, but it was too dark for us. Based on that, I should have known earlier that Altura regular roast would be the one for me. But no, I had to learn by my own mistakes!I will try to give you a list of what we tried, and what we thought of each.Coffee Bean Direct Yirgacheffe. I like Yirgacheffe coffee, but this one was hard to swallow. It wasn't a pleasant taste at all, and it was a 5 pound bag! After using about 3 pounds, we just couldn't drink it any more. I had frozen the beans, and now add just a few at a time to our morning coffee, as I'm too cheap to throw them away.Jeremiah's Pick Organic Breakfast Blend. A little bit stronger than we wanted, and it didn't taste fresh.Cameron's Gold Organic. We really liked the first bag, but the next few were stale, so cancelled the subscription.Lavazza Gran Filtro. Nope! Stale and not flavorful.Jacobs Kroenung Aroma-Bohnen. Not much flavor, and also stale.Weavers Organic Blend with Sweet Caramel finish. This is supposed to be one of the top-rated coffees, but it left a strange aftertaste, and we struggled to finish it.Equal Exchange Organic Coffee. A little too strong for us, though it was supposed to be a medium roast. Neither of us enjoyed the flavor.I often tried a coffee after carefully reading the reviews and have come to realize that what we like is very subjective. But stale coffee is never acceptable no matter what your taste may be. 5Great flavor and aroma (First bag only)Enjoying our coffee again! UPDATE: Second purchase was not flavorful at all. Cancelled auto subscribe. I have not found a coffee brand that sends consistently good coffee off of Amazon. If you know of one, please let me know. Will purchase what Costco has available until then. 3
