Customer Reviews

Sleeping better at nightI ordered 2 Cardinal Gates Door Guardians after my husband was arrested for assaulting me. I wanted something that would make it difficult - or impossible - for someone to open the doors to my home and come in. Installation was a breeze and I had both installed within 15 minutes. I installed them high so my children can't reach them, but given that they are all 6 years-old or younger I don't think they would be able to operate them even if I had placed them lower on the door frame. These work - really well - and it helps me sleep at night knowing that I have this added security. I tried a few other products on Amazon for extra security, including door jammers, and none of them worked well for me. I plan on purchasing another one of the Door Guardian locks to add to my outside garage door, for extra measure.Overall, these seem to be well made, easy to install, and a great value for your money. They're definitely helping me rest better in my home. 5The best security latch of its kind that I've foundRecently I bought a few of thePrime-Line Products U 10827 Door Reinforcement Lock, 3 in. Stop, Aluminum Construction, Satin Nickel Anodized Finish latches along with one of these Cardinal Gates models. Both of them are great and seem equally strong and secure. The Prime-Line seems to have a slightly longer hinge/tail and a slightly steeper "shoulder" allowing it to mount a little deeper in the door frame. But the Cardinal lock is much, much, MUCH smoother! If you give it a very hard flip it will close and latch. With the Prime-Line you have to pull pretty firmly on the catch and deliberately move it over; then it's much less smooth than the Cardinal. I don't think that it's loose enough to close accidentally, it takes a good swing to get it closed. There is however one very serious shortcoming the of the Cardinal Gates lock kit as it ships- the screws are ABSOLUTE GARBAGE! Seriously they're one short step up from pot metal. The screw heads are very soft and every single one stripped out on me as I ran them in, in spite of my having predrilled the holes! One of them stripped out so badly that it couldn't be driven any further while an inch of the screw was still sticking out of the door jamb! Obviously this prevented the door from closing. In the end I was able to mash the soft screw head with a vice grip pliers and twist it back out. I finished the installation with a 3" #9 T25 deck screw.Overall this lock is fantastic, and I would highly recommend it. But given the price it's inexcusable to include mounting screws this shoddy, especially since it requires so few. It's enough smoother vs the Prime-Line that I still prefer it (especially in a decor where you want a white one) but if you buy this item save yourself a lot of grief and get better screws. A screw with an #8 head would be ideal but the #9 was fine. One last caveat- it's likely that you will have to mortise the door jamb a bit to get it to fit. This is the case no matter which brand you buy, unless of course there's a lot of room between your door and the door jamb. This isn't very difficult to do although it requires a hammer and a wood chisel. 5out of the way and easy to activate for my own sanity I have a toddler that has just learned to open locked doors so I needed something mounted a little higher, out of the way and easy to activate for my own sanity. Mounted one on the garage door and the front door, both of these doors open inwards. I still have to find a solution for an outwards opening door. The installation is incredibly simple, three screws that need to be mounted. Before you permanently screw the long screws in, heed their advice and open and close the doors and latch the lock a few times before committing the location. Make sure that it does not rub on the door as it closes because this will damage your door.Overall an excellent product, about 5 minutes to install. 5Caution if you have casings around your doorsThis product is designed to work best on doors where the casing is flush with the door surface, not too common. If you have a casing around the door you will not be able to get the door guardian installed with the strike touching your door unless you chisel out a large portion of your door casement. Cutting into you casement might not be a problem if you want this for intrusion protection and you own your home. This product is close to being perfect for renters because the only holes are a few screw holes in the door frame that are covered by the door. Remove it when you leave and the landlord will never know. Unless you have the casing problem.Thankfully I only need this to prevent my toddler from escaping the house. So I was able to install it flush with the casing which leaves a gap between the door and the strike. This will allow you to open the door 1/2" before it hits the strike but then you are stopped. Not great for preventing forced entry but more than enough to prevent child exit. The unit feels solid and well made, i expect it to last. Installation was a breeze minus the casement issue.Update: I've added a product image to show what this looks like on my door with a 3/4" casing. 3Excellent for Alzheimer's caregivers. Tough, secure and easy to install.I installed the Cardinal Gates Door Guardian on my front door months ago. The clever design is a snap to open or latch one handed and the sleek design with baked-on enamel finish looks like it belongs there.Installation was relatively easy. My door fits tightly, so I used a sharp chisel to shave off about 1/8th inch of wood on the door jamb, but most doors have a bit more space and don't need trimming. I found an electric drill useful to cut a thin guide hole for the two extra-long screws. From a security standpoint, the Door Guardian would make breaking in the door a real chore. But I actually bought it because my wife has Alzheimer's and has taken to wandering. I suggest mounting it at the TOP of the door; if it is out of their immediate line of sight, Alzheimer's sufferers won't notice it and try to unlatch it. This is a solid five star product. 5A must have if you have kids, works well on double doorsI was looking for something that I could install higher on our front door that was easy for an adult to operate, but out of reach of our kids. My son scared us to death a week ago when he unlocked and opened the front door (we didn't think he could figure it out) and ran out of the house after me. Luckily we live on a dead end-ish quiet street. I was looking at the standard chain security locks or the ones you see on hotel room doors, but then I came across this. It sounded pretty genius, so I purchased and thankfully it worked out great. As you'll see in the pic, we used it a little differently than advertised. We have a double door at our front entrance, the left being inactive (flush bolts at top and bottom). There was just enough clearance between the doors that I was able to install on the left door without having to mortise. This cut my installation time down to about 3 minutes. I just drilled a pilot hole in the middle and tightens the middle screw enough to make sure the lock was in the right spot (the middle screw hole is wide so you can adjust how far the lock needs to protrude to clear any moulding or casing), then drilled the other two holes and put those screws in. Done. Works great and just what we needed. The white thing you see below the Guardian lock is a door chime/alarm we out on to warn us if the kids do get the door open. We're paranoid now. :) 5Excellent and strong.Very strong and works great even when trim is not flat. See pictures. I purchased longest possible #8 steel screws to drive them into the studs. 5Saving my toddlers lifeWorks great to keep my wild toddler inside the house. My two year old knows how to unlock the front door and recently he let himself out and made his way to the pond behind our house before we could catch him. We live in South Florida and with the recent tragedy of a boy the same age getting attacked and killed by a gator I had to act fast to prevent this from happening again. We installed this the day it came in and much to my toddlers disappointment it works perfectly. Mere minutes after we installed it he tried his escape act and, instead of finding him in a precarious situation, we found him in a tempter tantrum coping with the fact that he could not go outside alone. We have glass window next to our front door and about an inch between of wood trim/casing. Our door opens in. I didn't have a lot of room to work with using other types of locks like this but this was just right. We use the three small screws included to attach it to the casing. My husband had to bend it out a little because it was a tight fit to close the door. The door itself is being worn where it rubs when we close it, but the damage is unnoticeable when the door is closed and it's a very small price to pay for saving my child's life. It's less damage than you would have with any other lock which requires you to screw holes into the visible outside parts of the door and trim. Nothing needs to be screwed into the dorr which is a huge plus. The latch easily slides in the locking position and to unlock you sort of pull it out and back. It's easy for an adult to do and you don't need much strength. We put it high enough that manimal can't reach it, that is until he figures out how to slide a chair over, but I'm hoping by then I will have instilled a healthy fear in cars and alligators. 5Great lock for securityMy laundry room door has a window right next to the deadbolt. Not very secure. I got this to mount on the bottom of the door. If someone did break the glass and open the deadbolt it would be hard for them to figure out why the door wouldn't open.i was a little confused at first on how to put this on but there is a great YouTube Video.NOTE: This takes a HEX screwdriver NOT a philips. I wasn't paying attention and learned the hard way when I stripped the long one half way in. Fortunately my neighbor had a hex bit and was able to remove the screw and then drill it back in.I'm very happy with this and love the security I didn't have before. 5Additional security for a subpar doorConcerned after hearing about an increase in local door kick-ins, I finally decided to purchase this item that had been sitting in my "saved for later" cart for over a year. This afternoon, I replaced all the hinge and strikeplate screws with 3 1/2" deck screws and then put on the Door Guardian. Installation was very simple and I appreciated the slot that allows you to determine exact placement and adjust depth before drilling the other holes. My pictures show what it looks like both open and closed. What I learned: if you really want to know how secure your doors are, it takes more than a few glances. After changing out all the screws, opening/closing a number of times and pulling off a piece of trim to see the frame, I realized this old door isn't just ugly, but a piece of poorly-installed junk that needs replacing sooner than I thought. However, in the meantime, the Door Guardian does hold the door closed more securely and feels better than just relying on the lockset alone. I will definitely reinstall this on the new door, too! 4
