Customer Reviews

Disappointed - Turned a Very ROBUST Product into a WEAK OneI had a predecessor to these pruners for over 20 years but misplaced them last Spring. I bought these as replacements, but they are not at all as good a product.PROS: Nice looking tool that is fairly functional for a short time when new.CONS: These new pruners have one replaceable blade in the bypass shear area. While this probably seems like a great idea on paper, these new pruners are not nearly as strong or functional as the ones I lost. They lose strength due to the replaceable blade design and probably are weaker also due to inferior materials all the way around.CONCLUSIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS: I really hope that I find my 20 plus year old Corona Bypass Pruners. I was able to able to fully disassemble those, mildly reface the mating surfaces, and sharpen the bypass shear blades. They were restored to new condition with occasional maintenance. This new design with the replaceable blade is simply not as strong as the comparable fixed blade on my old pruners I would NOT RECOMMEND these pruners, but I do strongly suggest to myself that I look harder around the yard for the originals!!!2Cheap KnockoffReceived cheap knockoff that looks nothing like product featured. Will be returning. Had my first review removed for telling the truth1The real deal is great. This is my third pair. The other ones are roughly 25 years old and 12 years old. They still work. I did get 1" this time and the others are 3/4". I've asked for these as gifts - I like to have one pair in the garage and one in the shed - and have been given other clippers. Other brands - at least two - have the blades misalign when cutting anything substantial. They work fine on lily stems, but not on small tree branches - anything over 1/4". These keep their alignment no matter what. They may not go through something, but they don't woos out.I strongly believe that Amazon has a real issue with knock offs. The construction on all my Corona clippers is exactly the same. (I thought about posting pictures - but I don't want you to see how dirty the old ones are.) The handles are not plastic - not sure what they are, some sort of grip coating over metal. If the clippers look different than the older generation - you should send them back and try again. These are obviously forged steel, oiled, and very, very sturdy.5Well Made and DurableEasily the best pruners I've owned. I can cut 1/2" to 3/4" saplings with ease. They are well made and easy to clean. I expect them to work for years to come. I bought these to replace a crappy Craftsman Evolve pair I have that had the lock break and the spring start to stick.I will mention that I use these around chain link fence a lot since I have old stumps that continually sprout in my yard. I did accidentally cut down on the fence pretty hard and it did take a nick out of the top blade. I used a little metal file on it to smooth it out and they still prune just as well.5Good build quality with shameful performance. These shears feel good in the hand and are constructed to last with all steel components. After reading the reviews I knew that the edge may need a little work to clean up the factory grind, but nothing I wasn't willing to do. After receiving the product I inspected the edge and it was in decent shape (not great but serviceable). After spending a few minutes cleaning up the edge I went out and tried to cut a 3/8" diameter crabapple branch/twig and to my surprise it took quite the effort to cut through. I tried a couple of smaller diameter twigs with the same difficulty. Inspecting the blade afterwards I could see that the edge had rolled and buckled completely dulling it (see images). This was not expected to say the least. I've use no name brand pruners whose handles would bend during cutting, but at least their cutting edge stayed sharp. I am not sure what kind of quality control goes on at Corona, but a quick file test would have shown that these are as soft as mild steel.1Used to be great pruners... First, please see my original review below. After less than a month of 'light' use, these pruners look more used than my original pair! I went for them the other day and thought, 'Did someone find my old pair..?' Seriously. Other than the new looking non-slip grips, the metal surfaces are so rusted and corroded (especially the blades) that even the product name is barely visible - and these were not left in the elements. In fact, the only thing not rusting is the spring. The manufacturer must have changed the material formulation to something less rust resistant, and likely less durable. My old pruners, by comparison, while tarnished and stained were not covered with rust. And they were on occasion left out in the elements and/or my humid greenhouse. Now I'm not so sure about the construction and durability, and we'll see how they retain an edge. As I mentioned, the new pruners have only seen limited use and I am hoping to get as much life out of them as my former pair. Hopefully this isn't the same case of deteriorating product integrity that has plagued many other products over the years. My original review was based on my 'past' experiences with Corona products, and that is why I decided to revise my review.ORIGINAL REVIEW: I recently lost an older pair that were in use for over 10 years (still worked great), and replaced them with a new pair of these. After many years of service (and presumably more...) I'm sold on their construction and durability. There are other similar brands and styles, but these are the real deal. 3Glasslike blade = sharp til it shattersMy first time using these bad boys I was in the top of a tree trying to capture a feral bee swarm. I brought these brand new pruners up there with me to prune branches away from the swarm so I could cut the branch and put the swarm in one of my empty beehives. Anyway, after easily slicing through a couple of finger diameter branches, the clippers suddenly started chewing through the branches like a toothless old lady. In a panic I looked at the clippers and to my frustration / dismay / anger saw that the brand new blade had broken. Maybe I'm the broken tool for trying to capture a swarm of angry bees from the top of a tree, but regardless, it was a bad time to have a new tool break and I'll never buy a Corona product again.1No nonsense pruner I was attracted this by the minimalistic, forged construction. It is nice, cuts as expected, but of course not like the compound leverage models. Good price too.Note that the 3/4 cut is designed for big hands, and smaller cut sizes for medium and small hands. It is nice that everyone is covered.Comes apart for sharpening, thought plenty sharp to start with. I cut off the end of a finger with an old rusty pruner, so I can probably cut my entire finger off with this. Don't grab some foliage with on hand and then dive in with the pruner without some thought unless you want to know about the process of cauterization. 5Best Cutters, and look at the price!!!So, I have a vineyard. During pruning season I go through 3 pairs of trimmers a day and then sharpen them or replace the blades at night for the next days pruinings. I have SEVERAL big name brand pairs that cost upwards of $60 or more. THESE BEAT THEM ALL. and look at the price! I have two pairs of these and they are my #1 and #2 into the day. I do have another brand that is my #3 (just because making several thousand cuts a day makes you want to change hand position, so a different pair is shaped different). But these are my favorite without even considering price. Work the price in, and these are a SLAM DUNK.5Heavy, don't cutThese clippers would not even cut 1/4" branch easily. The tool was very heavy in my hand, and considerable force was needed to clip very small branches. As a test, I got out my broken one that was being replaced, made one clip with the new one, one clip with the old broken one a 1/2" away, and ..... the 10 year old, never sharpened clipper was easier to use, lighter, and cut cleanly. I am returning this new pair, and seeing about repairs on the old one.1Big Mistake Buying This!I bought this to use for this year s pruning. It works poorly. Forget about cutting 1 branch, I had a hard time cutting 1/2 . Today is the second day of pruning and I m giving up on this useless tool. Very frustrating using this shear when I have to keep switching for a larger pruning shears or this does not cut through with a clean cut. Then it s not sharp enough to cut the dangling thin bark. Too late to return it.1Poor design. Causes hand strain and fatique.I thought these would be nice for pruning. Unfortunately, the span and shape of the handles are not at all ergonomic. I have large hands, size Large in work gloves, and I was still unable to work with these pruners, without them causing my hands to become very fatigued and strained after only a few cuts of 3/8" diameter stems. I do not recommend these. Definitely not for people with smaller hands. I will be looking for another pair. Unfortunately, it's not worth returning, as it costs to send these back to seller.1Very nice clippers - not sure yet about small branches I did a fair amount of research on this before purchasing, and I studied the reviews. There are a lot of much more expensive models, but for the price this one seemed to be adequate. I'm a home gardener/landscaper, not a professional. It's a good product, and it's worked very nicely for nearly everything I've done with it so far, which has largely been my fall pruning - perennials, raspberries, etc. I really like the sturdy spring action, the lock and the blades. The handle is comfortable and the entire piece is quite sturdy. It doesn't get 5 stars yet because I did take a shot at a couple of relatively small branches on a lilac tree, and it seemed a lot harder to cut through than my previous cutter. I can't exactly call it a full and fair trial; there will be more opportunities in the spring, and will come back here and upgrade my review if I've been premature. Still, it's worth at least the 4 stars. Quite satisfied. 4
