Customer Reviews

Great unit...but stick with D-20a cartridge The unit itself is great for filtering bad tastes and chemical from our city supply (no softener or RO unit needed) and it lasted almost a year without changing the cartridge. All the fittings necessary for install on my sink were included.Love this unit but I tried to upgrade to a genuine Culligan D-30a cartridge and it would NOT seal correctly. The unit comes with a D-20a filter that is enclosed (vs. free-flow through mesh sides as the D-30a has) and no matter what I tried, it would not seal correctly....returning the D-30a and getting the same filter (D-20a) as came with it.A GREAT product, but watch the replacement cartridges!! 5Easy to Install, Removes Chlorine and Off Smells and Taste from Drinking/Cooking Water; Saves Cost of Bottled Water. This is an inexpensive way to have fresh un-chlorinated water for cooking, drinking, and coffee/tea. Easy to install under sink; for copper pipe, will need pipe cutter; for flex tubing/hose, will need additional fittings readily available at local Ace Hardware (take a picture with your smart phone and measure dimensions of tubing/hose (usually 3/8"). You'll need to sink a couple of screws to hold the bracket in place and anchors if you're putting it into drywall. It comes with a D-20 filter, good for 12 months and removing chlorine and other off smells and taste. Other filters, D-10, D-30, and D-40, are available to remove sediment, chemicals, and critters that might be found in well water but which are not usually found in city water. Great way to save the planet from the accumulation of plastic water bottle, and much cheaper. 5Filter works great, installation is a bear! The filter works great, once you get it installed. As others have mentioned, installation of the filter housing is TERRIBLE. While the instructions say it's for a supply with 3/8" water lines, the supplied tubing is actually 1/4" INSIDE diameter tubing, NOT 3/8. The instructions suggest cutting the supply line above the under-sink shutoff valve, and "splicing in" the filter. HOWEVER, most homes I'm aware of do not have 1/4" line from the shutoff valve to the fauceet, they have 3/8" flexible sink connector tubes that are shrouded in braided steel. You can't cut those. I went to Home Depot 3 times to get the correct connections to fit. So, if you're going to install this, and don't have 1/4" pex tubing from the shutoff valve to the faucet, you'll want to buy 1/4" sharkbite type connectors. Unfortunately, 1/4" doesn't seem to be too common, and Home Depot's supply of 1/4" sharkbite-style connectors was extremely limited.I ended up buying 2 sharkbite 1/4" to 3/8" compression fittings (Home Depot 202270607). One of these fit the shutoff valve (see the first photo). The other, I used in combination with a 3/8" compression coupler (Home Depot 207176323) on the "OUT" side of the filter, to then connect the faucet supply line to (see the second photo). All-in-all, it cost me another $20 or so and 2 trips to Home Depot to get this thing installed. After getting everything connected, the housing leaked HORRIBLY from the IN and OUT connections. I took everything apart, and realized the O rings inside the connections on the housing were out-of-place. I used a small screwdriver to gently push the O rings back in place, and put everything back together.Once installed however, the fi 3High Quality... and 50% Savings We've had a competitor's filter for years, and were happy enough with its performance. But GE has discontinued filter cartridges for our model, so my wife and I went in search of a replacement. Culligan has a good reputation... and prices far below their competitor's. We were able to get the filter, a standard (low-level) cartridge, and a "3rd-tier" cartridge for less than we were paying for the competitor's 3rd-tier cartridges alone. As far as we can see (and taste), we now have a high-quality filter... with 50% savings on replacement filters. 4Works well once installed The filter seems to be working well after using it for one day. You can tell the difference in the taste of the water: it tastes "lighter" (the unit came with the D-20A filter cartridge). The problem you might run into is when installing it. It comes with 3/8" plastic tubing that is supposed to be hooked into your cold water supply line. There are detailed, clear directions for doing this. However, my water supply line is 1/2". This required extra work under the sink and several trips to the hardware store to get advice from the kitchen-faucet expert, and buying the hardware needed to adapt the filter's tubing to my water supply. There is NO mention of this eventuality anywhere in the instructions. I'm still seeing a little leak where the filter input tubing inserts into the water line that I need to work out. I also had a leak between the cap and bottom section of the filter housing, which seems to have stopped after I tightened the bottom really hard (the Troubleshooting instructions say "Do not overtighten" so I don't know if I've done anything bad at this point!). They do provide a Technical Support number, which I haven't used yet but might call regarding the leak.It does what it's supposed to after you install it properly, but note the other reviews that talk about the problems involved in installing this. I would not buy this again if I had the option. 3Leak... water damage prone Installed this same model seven years ago and had no issues. This time around, the 3/8 hose provided did not come with proper adapters for thread sockets. Went to the hardware store and spent $20 in brass adapters + 4hrs attempting every level of tightening, thread lock, tape. NOTHING could put an end to the leak. The best I got was one drop for every 10sec... Too much water for evaporation therefore was forced to rip it all out and return it. #Lame 1Works well but wish it had threaded fittings I liked the idea of saving money spent on pitcher water filters. I bought this filter along with the Amazon recommended Watts faucet since customers complained about the other Culligan complete kit using a plastic faucet which breaks easily. This kit comes with a D20 filter, couple feet of 3/8" hose, two 3/8" 90 elbow quick-connects, and screws to mount to inside of cabinet. If you plan on using this to filter all cold water from your faucet I recommend going to the hardware store to buy some brass compression fittings to adapt over to the 3/8" plastic tubing and then back again after the filter. It seems too many people are trying to get the quick-connect fittings to grip their copper pipe or tubing. In all honesty, I would not expect the quick-connect teeth to hold onto copper with high water pressure. The tiny teeth are meant to grip plastic tubing and once connected it's nearly impossible to remove without damaging it.Likewise, if you're going to add a seperate drinking faucet you'll want to go to the hardware store to buy a brass tee which fits your current piping. Make sure the side takeoff of the tee is 3/8" compression which you'll use to run to the filter and then up to the drinking faucet. Connect your old faucet to the top of the tee. This is easy if you have a newer faucet with threaded compression nuts. Look for something called Adapt-a-tee which is a tee with a compression nut on one end and male compression threads on the other two ports.Personally, I would prefer threaded fittings on this filter. I really don't see how it's worth trusting customers with the quick-connects when real compression fittings are easy to use and you can simply tighten them to stop leaks. I have no idea how long the gaskets last in the quick-connects and once put together they can't easily be taken apart. Most people don't even realize just how far they have to push for a complete seal.Since I have a completely seperate line for my ice maker coming from the basement I bought a second filter for behind the fridge. I refuse to pay $30+ for a refrigerator filter that only lasts 6 months when these cheap babies last 12 months! To make things easier I installed the under-sink filter first, flushed the include D-20 filter element to get all the loose carbon out of it, and then re-installed the flushed D-20 cartridge into the fridge filter. It would be nearly impossible to get all the loose carbon out using the fridge water/ice system. Afterward, I installed a new D-30 element into the under-sink filter and flushed that. Both D-20 and D-30 cartridges made our water taste better but I wanted the extra filtering for the faucet and will use the cheaper D-20 for making ice. The D-30 did slow down the water pressure a little bit compared to the D-20 but with our water pressure it's just right. 4Easy to install, need a trip to the hardware store though depending what you are using it for I installed it in between the cold water outlet underneath the sink and the faucet. Had to go to the store to get some fittings, but it was generally easy to install. Be warned, that little relief valve is a classic push in valve. After the tiny amount of air that might or might not be in there is let out, water will be shooting out, so I generally put a wash cloth or rag around it and gently pulse press the valve button till the cloth is a bit wet, then you know you are done, and you avoided getting a stream in the eye or something! Our usage of it for that utility/laundry area sink which doesn't get much regular use at all, it will get its heaviest use for cold water going to fish and amphibian tanks, will probably only need changed out filter once a year. We are using the 20 level filter. 5Replaced my older 3M under-sink filter I've been using a 3M "Filtrete Standard Under Sink Quick Change Water Filtration System, Easy to Install, Reduces 5 Microns Sediment and Chlorine Taste & Odor, Includes 6 Month Filter (3US-AS01)" to filter drinking water in our kitchen for years, but when I went to order more filters recently, I saw that the 3M filters now have a prop 65 health warning! Sorry, but I don't want a product that has a cancer/birth defects health warning to be filtering our drinking water, so the 3M had to go. I bought this as a replacement because it doesn't carry a Prop 65 warning on Amazon, and it's a name brand. I can confirm there's no warning that I can find printed on the box or instructions either.Regarding the installation, if you already have a 3M filter and want to replace it with this Culligan which doesn't carry a prop 65 warning, this is a super easy install. It uses the same size hoses as the 3M, so I just had to pop them out of the quick-release (by depressing the little ring around each hose), install the Culligan, and press the same hoses back in. No leaks. I didn't even have to move the two screws that hold the unit in place under my sink since the width between them is the same as the 3M.I feel better about my drinking water already. 5Minus 5 stars Ordered Culligan to replace leaking under sink water filter on 1/13. Promised delivery by 1/7. Email said delayed a week. Package arrived 2/13. Check the routing of this package. It went to three different cities in Massachusetts. Upon opening the package found a extremely dusty, torn package that looked like it had sat on a shelf for years. The product was Ace, not Culligan, but they said the Ace would be "equivalent." My plumber arrived to install and he said a Culligan would be easy but the Ace needed new fittings. Cost $27 at local Ace. Ad said cartridge would be included and there was none included. Went back to local Ace for cartridge but they did not carry their own name brand of Ace cartridge and nothing they carried would fit. Still have not found one that will fit and allow filter to work. I had to go to the hospital and have put this on hold until more pressing issues resolved. 1
