Customer Reviews

Update on my June 10, 2017 Review This works well as long as you select the right grind for your coffee! We initially chose one that was too fine & the machine just stopped! After finding some info online about a better grind choice we chose a more medium grind & it s been working fine ever since. There is a small amount of crema but nothing compared to what we had when we visited family in Australia from their machine that we can t get over here! Lol! My favorite feature was that the bottom tray slides out & you can use a mug or taller cup instead of just the smaller espresso cups. Definitely makes a decent cup of espresso & worth the money. 4If you know what you're doing, you don't need an expensive machine and grinder We owned a DeLonghi machine prior to this, which functioned great for 3 years until it burned down along with our house. It was a $100 machine and along with it we had a really nice Italian burr grinder that normally would have cost $800 or so, that I got a steal of a deal of eBay on. On top of that, we roast our own green organic coffee beans that I get from AromaCraft Coffee (sold here on Amazon). The previous machine made a great tasting espresso, but this machine is even better and really comes close to getting the same type of shots you'll get in a $1000 machine if you know what you're doing. I even use the plastic tamper that came with the machine, and a cheap blade grinder. It's really all in how you pack the portafilter. If you grind really fine, you can't pack it too tight. Too coursely, and you wont get a nice creamy shot. It's all about finding the balance between the grind and the tamping, as well as using high quality, freshly roasted beans. This machine will get you the rest of the way and you'll be drinking shots of espresso better than most coffee shops.I have to say that I'm not thrilled about the steamer. It doesn't seem to work as well as the previous one we had, and spits out a lot of water, but not really a big deal, since we mostly just take shots straight with a little bit of cream.Have had this for machine for 4 months now with no issues. Will update in the future! 5Terrible Machine Edit:Exactly one year later (and the end of the warranty cycle) the leaking has got to the point where the machine is completely broken and useless. I bought the decalking solution and have been using it exactly as described for the entirety of its life cycle and still leaking.Delonghi customer service is a complete mess, I called to ask for advice/repair solutions to the machine but they told me I would be getting a new machine which sounded so great at the moment! Well guess what, I had to cut the cord off my old machine, send them a picture and confirm it was purchased. Bear in mind this was weeks ago, it has now been over a month and every time I call I get a new person who pretends to help me and decides to assure me it will be there at a certain date (and as usual that day goes by and nothing). My conclusion? Skip Delonghi products completely and try something more trusted, I rarely write reviews but I'm writing this because I'm so pissed off with this company. Spend a couple hundred bucks more and get something more reliable and trusted, I know I will. 1Great taste, easy to use. Here are my tips: I never write reviews for anything I purchase on Amazon (yet I read reviews for everything I purchase), and I'm so glad I chose this machine when looking for a new espresso maker. Personally, I am really hands on with my coffee in the mornings. I am not a "push a button and go" kinda girl, so if you are looking for that, maybe look elsewhere? This machine can be a bit finicky at times. It's so easy to use, and relatively mess free. It is a but loud, but that doesn't bother me. It works like a breeze, and produces consistently great pours with beautiful crema markings. The milk frother works wonderfully with any type of milk (I only use almond or coconut milk). Being a barista years back I learned some milks are really hard to get a nice velvety foam, and this machine does just that with almond milk! It's not latte art quality, but juuuuust close enough that it could be.Here's my advice after owning this machine for a few months now...1. Start off with some Illy ground espresso in the can (like a previous reviewer had mentioned) so that you can have good tasting espresso while you get used to how your machine works. Tamp your espresso lightly!! Don't cram it in there or it will ruin the flow!2. Once you get used to how the Illy grounds work with your machine, then you can move on to local coffee shop beans. The reason being that the coffee grounds have more oils in them and are ground a bit more fine so it doesn't come out in a flow, but more of a drip. I typically put my cup right where the drip comes out, and it flows evenly for a perfect crema. Ask your barista for their particular choice in espresso beans when you go to your local roaster. I prefer Peet's Coffee or Philz Coffee's Aromatic Arabic, but make sure you ask them to grind 1 step more coarse then the typical espresso grind to make it a little easier on yourself..3. Always wipe your machine after use. I know I can be busy at times and forget to take out the tamp and empty the used espresso out, but try to always wipe the milk frother after use, and wipe down your machine. It comes apart easily so you can really get in there. At least 3 days I do a full rinse of the machine. I know I should do it after every single use, but I have had no problems thus far.4. Last but not least, make sure you get a ***small*** milk pitcher and tamp (I bought mine from the seller New Star Foodservice since it was priced right and well made). I know you get a 2 in 1 scoop and tamp with this machine, but look for something slightly heavy and stainless steel. 5Low pressure on my model Very disappointing and a waste of time.I researched under $200 espresso machines before buying this model. This De'Longhi seemed possibly better than others in the same price range -- and higher price ranges ... as long as I didn't receive one of the lemons. The first couple espresso shots were fine, not amazing. My Illy didn't taste quite right, but the crema was okay. The next day, the machine struggled to push the water through my fresh grounds. I figured maybe I'd put in too many grounds. The next day, more noise and the pressure seemed weak. I thought that maybe I'd tamped a bit too hard for this machine. The next shot was a bit better but still noisy and slow. Drip, drip, drip.Cut to a week later, trying to figure out when the De'Longhi will/won't push water through the grounds, and the machine is making more noise as it strains to create one simple cup of espresso through a basket of minimal quantity grounds and only lightly tamped. Nothing. No espresso. Not even a drip. I had to buy from one of the chains on my way to work.My biggest surprise, and disappointment, after reading other reviews, is that the pressure on this machine seems very weak. Some other reviews state how strong the pressure is but certainly other reviews state the pressure is weak. My machine has weak pressure. This makes me think the quality-control is inconsistent; some people get good machines, and some get weak ones.I'd even bought the insurance for this espresso machine since I know that many of these under $200 models fail in less than 24 months. However, this one failed so quickly it goes back to Amazon. Maybe Amazon can complain to De'Longhi about all the returns. 1That low end machine made a lot of very good espresso over the years and thought I would just ... I had a Delonghi in our family for over 10 years similar to De'Longhi EC220CD 15-Bar Pump Driven Espresso Maker and when it finally died I figured I would just replace it in kind. That low end machine made a lot of very good espresso over the years and thought I would just replace it with the same model because it did so well. But when I finally decided to purchase another machine I stepped up to this one and was glad i did. So far the machine has performed fabulously. I teamed it up with an inexpensive Capresso conical burr grinder Capresso 560.04 Infinity Conical Burr Grinder, Stainless Finish and I can't say enough about the quality of the coffee it delivers. Nice thick crema and tastes great. If you don't consider yourself a "Barista" and don't want to spend $500-$1000 on a system, but just want a good shot of espresso, I would highly recommend this machine. 5strong clean shots every time until it breaks Pump broke after 3 months. After my 10 year old De Longhi espresso machine died, I could not find anything that came close. Finally after a few returns of other brands, I bought this one on Amazon. It is a pretty machine and makes a pretty cup of espresso. It looks and feels like a $100 machine, unlike the awful IMUSA and mr coffee ones I had bought. The portafilter is heavy, made of good quality stainless steel and some type of plastic that does not make the coffee taste awful (unlike IMUSA). If you have have short fingernails and arthritic hands like I do, the portafilter assembly / disassembly will be a problem. It make a lot of steam and has good pressure but the taste isn't quite as good as my old machine. It is as close as I can get without breaking the bank. Amazon and the USPS did an excellent job of getting this to my door the next day, on a Sunday! The electric pump makes me a bit nervous, it doesn't sound too awful but seems to work really hard. I'm going to purchase the extended warranty for this machine. I don't think it will last 10 years like the steam powered one I had before. 1Terrible. I had one of the original Delonghi for years and years, and then I guess they sold the company or something because the machines got decidedly cheaper. I bought and returned one years ago, so this time when my old machine finally died I bought this model. Boy where do I start?Stainless steel? Try silver-colored plastic and cheap aluminum. I read through the reviews to learn that the boiler is stainless but I didn't open the machine to verify and the description doesn't specify "steel boiler". The thing looks and feels so cheap if it were a toy I'd be embarrassed to give it to my kid. And the espresso is pitiful. I mean really flavorless, weak, no crema. Yuk. And I was using more espresso than with my original machine, so great. Now my cost just went up for a worse experience. And third, the grounds basket sits very tightly in the arm. You have to pry it off with a knife. Fun! If you didn't do this every day I think the watery espresso dregs would collect and grow some lovely bacteria. So this one is going back and I'm giving up on DeLonghi. Sorry. You were great once. But it's not enough to rest on your laurels. You actually have to keep producing quality to keep up your reputation. Funny how that works. 1Espresso Machine The De'Longhi ECP3420 15" Bar Pump Espresso and Cappuccino machine works very well. I have been making lattes for several years with various machines. I started with a very cheap machine that made passable lattes and then got a De'Longhi EC702 and now the ECP 3420. All three would not be termed expensive or high end espresso machines. This new machine, the ECP3420, is about 3/4 of the cost of my earlier machine and is much easier to use. There are less settings so that slight changes in the strength and flavor are not easily made, but the ease of making a latte makes up for it. The flavor quality is about the same. My favorite vanilla lattes come from a regional coffee place (Caribou Coffee) and I find that the De'Longhi approaches their quality, but does not quite get there. It could be the beans, the pressure or something else, or me.One thing that I noticed about this new machine is that even if I pack the ground espresso very hard, it does not seem to impede the pump action. The flow of the espresso is very dark and even. There is not an overabundance of foam in the espresso itself. The milk "frother" works very well and makes a nice even froth.I have always ground my own beans at the time of making the espresso so that I can get the fineness of the grind that I find the best. The ECP 3420 handles any of the grinds. The water tank is very handy and easy to add water. The unit will also take the prepackaged espresso packets. One thing to note is the instruction booklet...It is in color, has clear pictures and written directions. It is extremely clear and concise. This might be the best instruction booklet I have ever used. Especially if you are new to making espresso, you will have not problem with this machine and the instructions. The is good moderately priced machine.September 30, 2015 I regret to have to revise my review of this machine. After only one month of use, the pump stopped working rendering the machine useless. I really liked this unit and the flavor of the espresso, but alas, it doesn't work after only about 35-30 espressos.October 2015 - Running the risk of loosing review credibility, I must revisit the review of this product for the third time. I do this in fairness to De'Longhi as well as this product. As covered in my previous review - The reason that the pump was not working is that the water storage container was not completely seated in the bottom of the unit. If it is up even a 1/16 of an inch it will not function. The water tank must be firmly pushed down into the unit. I discovered this really by accident.I found this out when I had decided to try to find out why it didn't work prior to disposing of it. I am now using it again without any problem. Sorry De'Longhi. 4Great machine! Just check the reservoir. I've had this machine for a month and so far it's been fantastic. I love lattes and mistos and having to go to Starbucks every morning just isn't something I want to do.So, armed with my espresso beans, my white mocha sauce and my Keurig, I've been able to make my favorite drinks from the comfort of my home! What I've found so far:PROS:- The froth, though not very dense, is great. It wand will froth 6 ounces of soy milk in less than 45 seconds.- The warming plate gets hot!- I turn the machine off when I'm done so warming it back up takes less than 30 seconds before the green light turns on- The water level is visible so you know when you need to add more without moving the machineCONS:- The warming plate gets hot! It's a little too hot in my opinion but I don't use it.- The water reservoir MUST be all the way down. When it arrives, it'll look like it's in place. It isn't. Gently push it down.TIPS:- Take the steam wand apart and rinse after each use. Don't try to rush it like Starbucks and just blow steam through it. There will be left over milk in the wand. It comes apart easily, wipe down the attached wand and purge it with steam for 1-3 seconds and then run the parts (2) under warm water. Set them on the drip try to dry and you're ready to go next time! (in picture)- More water seems to create better steam. I refill the reservoir when it's less than half full. 5
