Customer Reviews

BUy IT And Stay Warm I used to sell these types of kits when I worked in retail. There were always issues when customers didn't follow instructions. For the price you will not find a more economical way to weatherproof the windows in your house or apartment. The Duck Brand is, in my opinion, a winner in the do-it-yourself window insulation industry. Just keep in mind that you have options when using a kit like this. One option is to double the plastic when installing it. According to how cold it is in your area, one layer may be okay but I find that for the price two is better. The product is very durable and resists holes being poked in it like the type you can make with your finger. It is crystal clear so you can see outside even with two layers. The other option is that although you can use a blow dryer on this product to shrink it to an airtight fit you can also just install it and not heat the surface and use it just to cut the draft in the room. Make sure that around the window frame is clean, use the double stick tape around the frame, roll out the plastic and put it up against the frame from left to right then cut with scissors and unroll the length and apply. It was so easy and you save money. Buy this item and stay warm. 4Lost the Drafts; Found Four Degrees! We bought a 200 year-old house, and over time will be replacing many of the windows. We live in the Northeast (currently 2F, was -5F this morning!), and it gets COLD here in the winter! The old windows are beautiful, but drafty, even with their storms. I saw this product, its reasonable price, and thought, "Why not?"We covered 8 upstairs windows (2 bedrooms, a bath, and a hallway), one dining room window, and a guest room window. The drafts are GONE and we went from 66-67F in the upstairs bedrooms (with the thermostat set to 72F downstairs to try to get enough heat into those bedrooms) to 70-71F upstairs, without the chilly drafts =). That was in sub-zero temps outside. These window covers are obviously keeping the cold air out and the warm air in! We can reduce the thermostat a bit and the furnace won't run so much. I think these things just paid for themselves - exponentially! Not to mention that the bedrooms are MUCH more comfortable.Ease of installation: Easy, if a bit tedious when doing multiple windows. Well worth the time and minimal effort. How they look: I was skeptical about what these window films would look like; other reviewers said they were absolutely crystal clear, and I didn't believe it. But they are - absolutely clear. Very impressed, see photos attached. With curtains up, you cannot see that there are films over the windows. Except for the part where the curtains aren't blowing in the drafty breeze, ha!I'm buying two more of the 5 window kits today - will be covering some more windows and will have spare materials on hand in case children poke through (not stressed about that, though, because this product is so reasonably priced).Would I recommend this product? ABSOLUTELY!Image 1 - small window, right side with film just installed; left side after blow-drying doneImage 2 - larger window, right side with tape, but not film installed; left side with film installed and blow-drying doneImage 3 - large window with film installed with blow-drying done; absolutely clear film. Dirty window, but clear film, ha! 5JUNK, JUNK, JUNK, JUNK, JUNK!!!! JUNK, JUNK, JUNK, JUNK, JUNK!!!!I installed this on 3 windows. Weather was mild and dry. I carefully prepared all of the surfaces and followed all instructions to the letter. The film looked fine when I was done - adhered well to the tape all around the edges (or so it seemed) and taut in the middle.LESS THAN A WEEK LATER, on 2 of the 3 windows, the film has come off the tape or the tape has come off the wall, or both, and it's just hanging down, completely USELESS. I remember using a similar product from 3M years ago -- it lasted all through a long, cold winter, and when I went to take it down in the Spring, it showed no signed at all of failure. They should call this "Suck Brand," not "Duck Brand." 1Good... BUT... It works. BUT.Follow these pro tips for best results:1.) lay the 2 sided tape. If you go ALL the way around your window in one fell swoop, use a razor blade and score the window corners. Every time there is a 90 degree angle, score this with the razor. The reason is this is an area of weakness, and if it is going to pull off the tape, this will be the first place because there's usually a bend in the tape here. Scoring the tape will prevent this.2.) While using a blow dryer DOES tighten the plastic, and make it wrinkle free.... forget this step. It's nice for about 3 weeks, but once it gets cold, the plastic tightens more and pulls off in some places. Leave it wrinkly if you're putting these in to keep out cold.3.) After you lay the tape and have your MEASURED section ready (give yourself 2-4 inches BEYOND you measured, put the plastic up 1" INSIDE the tape. This gives you room to move on the other sides while you put it up, and if you do decide to not listen to me in #2 above, it gives some play in getting it set the first time. Even without using a blow dryer to tighten, leaving a little play keeps strain of the double-sided tape, and keeps you from putting these up again in the winter. My windows suck and I can see the plastic move at times with extreme wind... but now with these up, my furnace can actually keep up, whereas it couldn't last winter.Last tip, don't get the Amazon Easy package, get the name brand (here on amazon too). You're just paying $3 more for a brown cardboard box rather than a duck brand cardboard box...***update 11/30/18***These are still good, and working well FOR THE WINDOWS I DID NOT TIGHTEN WITH A BLOW DRYER. I've had to re-tape almost every other window that I used a blow dryer on.... as it gets colder, the plastic tightens more and pulls off the sides in placesNever mind using the blow dryer to give the crystal clear effect. If you are putting these o. to keep out the cold, just put them up with a little slack and you'll be fine. 3Worked perfectly! These worked SO well!! I was such a skeptic (if they would work and how long it would take me to get up). It was easy. Took total of 30 minutes to put up 5 of them on pretty long windows. I was also able to rehang the blinds after which I was worried I wouldn't be able too. And you can tell the difference from the rooms I haven't done. I couldve been more neat with the cutting or installing of them (I have one window that is neat and done nicely, but showing pic of one where I just threw it up and it worked really well). Will get next year!! 5The tape ruined my windows! These were easily to apply (or as easy as window insulators ever are) and worked well to insulate our home over the winter. When I started trying to remove them in the spring, though, the double-sided tape refused to come off cleanly. It stripped the paint off several of our window frames, and for one window I haven't been able to remove the tape at all, even with reliable solvents like goo gone. There are just gross, yellowy strips of tape left all over that window sill, being nasty. And the other windows have big strips of paint torn off. It's a good look. All together, I would say about 10% of the tape came off as it's supposed to; the other 90% left damage or is still there.About me: I've used a variety of kinds of window plastic, pretty much every winter for the last 10 years. We've moved to a new apartment roughly every year or two, so I've applied insulators like this to a lot of different windows. I know what I'm doing. I've never dealt with tape that was so frustrating and destructive. I definitely won't be buying this again! 1DIY ground cover/tent footprint! I don't seal windows with this so I cannot comment on that. However, this stuff makes an excellent ultralight footprint for backpacking and camping. 1.5 oz for a pice roughly 3'X7'. 5Live in Arizona and helps keep the heat out of the house. I ve purchased these kinds of shrink film in the past and I have always been happy with them. I live in Arizona, so out here we use them for the opposite reasons than the rest of the country. We suffer through extreme heat here for many, many months. We want to keep the heat out of the home and have the house much cooler. To give you an example on how well they work, my kitchen has a lot of windows. Without the window film my kitchen gets extremely warm and uncomfortable to be in. With the shrink wrap my kitchen is only just slightly warm. I have put them on all my windows now. Anything that I can do keep my home cooler I will do. 5Easy, warm and oddly satisfying to blow dry I purchased this for my family's home which gets fairly cold during the winter. Mind you, we're in southern California, but our family's house is full of large vaulted windows. Since this was my first time working with any sort of home insulation film, I had to do a ton of research on how it works, how to install it and which brand is the best for me and I somehow I ended up with Duck Brand as the best value for the money. The 3M brand was nearly twice the price!!EASY INSTALLATIONI'm sure this is the same with all window insulation kits as they all share a similar setup, but IT'S SUPER EASY! Don't be intimidated by the lack of information and process for this. It's really just measure, cut, tape, hair dryer.Step-by-Step1. Clean mounting surface of dust with microfiber cloth2. Use alcohol and clean cloth to clean residue from surface and let dry3. Taping around your window4. Measure window5. Cut film to size6. Tape film to window7. Heat film with hair dryer/heat gunIT WORKS!So far, I can actually feel a difference and I only applied it to a few windows. Since I'm in California, I didn't want to seal every window as we get hot days and cold days during winter so I just did the windows that are typically closed year round. I also insulated my entire garage door and it's considerably warmer already. Though I will be adding some foam boards to the door to get it 'comfortably warmer'.WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS?Most definitely! I'm surprised I haven't considered this sooner. My plan is to leave this installed year round on certain windows. We have blinds so nobody will ever notice. 5CRYSTAL CLEAR IS RIGHT For those of you who are in doubt of their own capacity and ability to properly install this like I was, DO NOT FEAR.I have never installed something like this before, and mind you, I am not the handy-wo/man kind of person either. But I had absolutely no issue installing this whatsoever, and as they promised, it is Cyrstal-clear indeed. When I actually taped the plastic film to the tapes, I was sure that I have ruined it for sure, and that I will have to restart the whole thing: I had sections that slightly overlapped, creating a fold. The way I attached the plastic was visibly and obviously a little skewed to one side.BUT, THESE SHRINK LIKE NOBODY'S BUSINESS. I wasn't sure if the shrinkage would solve the problem, but it sure did after about 15 minutes of blowdrying.Blow Drying Tip: when blowdrying, rather than blowing at the wrinkled area directly, sway the blow dryer gently around the wrinkle itself and the wrinkle will come out much faster.I've attached a photo of the finished product. You can't really see that there's a film except for the ghostly reflection on the film itself. You can kind of see the ruffled edges, for I just roughly trimmed the extras off with a scissor after I was done.Plastic Film Cutting Tip: have plenty of extra space. If you're anything like me, you will most likely end up with a bit slanted film application, and the extra allowance will make sure you're not left with a gap. For me, I first adjusted one entire film by the long length first, and didn't really trim the sides. I applied the top first, then the sides, then the bottom, THEN I cut any extra on the bottom.Seriously, I do not know what this plastic film is made of, but they shrink like nobody's business and I have to say I'm almost in disbelief of how crystal clear it turned out to be.Feel free to read the rest of my reviews on Amazon: I rarely write reviews here, but when I do, it's because I had a bit of doubt myself when purchasing it, but turned out to exceed my wildest imaginations. 5
