Customer Reviews

great value I purchased this against the advice of my husband who was concerned it would be too flimsy. He is a builder and has a good eye for quality products. He was pleasantly surprised to find this to be perfect for our pecans. It takes a fraction of the time to crack them then using a classic nutcracker. We collect up to 40 lbs of pecans a year from our one huge pecan tree. Then we would give a lot of them away and only use them sparingly as it took so long to crack them. Now we are enjoying all kinds of pecan dishes thanks to this nut cracker and no longer avoid putting pecans in recipes because it takes so long to crack them. Highly recommended for pecans. Have not used it for other nuts. Probably would not work that well on black walnuts. Probably be great for English walnuts or filberts. It adjusts easily but we only need to set it at one size. 5IT WORKS GREAT! We have a macadamia nut tree here on ... IT WORKS GREAT! We have a macadamia nut tree here on Maui; mac nuts are really hard and spherical so are nearly impossible to crack open. This cracker works perfectly - adjustable for the various size nuts. The handle is just long enough to provide the necessary force; could be a little longer for those woth less arm strength. It is threaded in and I'll probable make a longer one.BTW - I just bought another one for the guest cottage.... 5it works great!! It would be much better for Dad ... We have used this to crack Mom and Dad's pecans...it works great!! It would be much better for Dad to use if it were on a longer base, but the cracker itself works great on small and large pecans. Shipment was good and price was good. 4Damaged upon receipt While the item appears to be of generally sturdy construction, it must have been manhandled in the factory because the threads in the adjustment nut are damaged (smashed) from what looks like a pretty hefty impact. (Perhaps the item was dropped from a height into a bin of them?) As a result the adjustment nut will not rotate past the rough burrs on the interior of the threaded shaft.I'm returning the item and am unsure about whether to replace it because I wonder how I can know I won't just receive another damaged one? 1Was curious to see which was better. Turns out both products are identical Ordered both the Duke and a Hiware....intending to keep one and give the other as a gift. Was curious to see which was better. Turns out both products are identical. Both came in the same exact box, which was simply labeled "nut cracker", with no indication of who made it or where it came from. BTW, while both work as intended, I would not want to try cracking a whole tree full of nuts with one. More like a pound or so at one time......enough for a pecan pie or two. Or in my case, I'm using it to crack small samples from various trees so I can evaluate the nuts. Works great for that. Once you adjust it to the correct length for the nuts you are cracking, it works well. Length adjustment is easy to make...just screw the end piece in or out. Pecans self load from a built in shelf. Effort required to crack them depends entirely on the nut. Some of our small northern hard shell pecans take some effort to crack. Others are easy. 3Perfect! I am delighted with my purchase! I bought this after spending hours cracking and destroying a pile of pecans. We moved to a home with many pecan trees and are new at cracking in bulk. Using the handheld cracker was tedious and my hand was sore for days. The Doke cracker is really easy to use, the pecan nuts themselves usually can be extracted in intact halves. This is a much more efficient and effective way to manage all these pecans. The cracker is adjustable so it has worked with even the smallest of our nuts. The item seems sturdy, I have no fear of bending the handle when applying pressure (for pecans) and the mechanical parts move smoothly. Exactly what I needed! 5Strong, reliable, should last a long time, blows away the old hand-held models! 50 pounds of pecans were no match for this nut cracker. We blew through them in no time, yielding a little over 20 pounds of pecan halves. If you don't have access to a commercial nut cracker, this is the way to go. We were given a 50 pound sack of pecans. Some were the big variety and a few were the small ones that almost look like hickory nuts. The adjustable part of this nut cracker made it possible to get a good result from them all!PRO's1. Sturdy2. Easy to use3. Adjustable4. Compact design5. 5-point contact6. Makes shelling a breeze7. No more squeezing in your hands!!!8. Easy clean upCON's1. Messy - But that's a givenPOINTERS:1. As others have suggested, use this on a tray. We used a cookie sheet.2. Wear eye protection3. Adjust it for most of the nuts you're cracking, lay the smaller ones to the side and go back and do them later.4. Set the cracker where you are facing the lever and pulling it toward you. At least for me, this seemed a better position than trying to go left or right with it.5. Expect to sweep or use a shop-vac to clean up the work area when done.6. Get a feel for it before you go pulverizing your pecans. Once you do a few you can tell how much you need to crack them or hard you need to pull the lever in order to get a good nut out of the shell.Overall, if you can't or don't want to take your pecans to get them commercially cracked, this is a great option. It worked seamlessly, and we got a great result. With three of us working at it (1 person cracking and 2 people shelling), we spent about 7 hours on 50 pounds of pecans. I think this would do well on harder nuts, too. The small ones we had that resembled hickory nuts had very thick shells but cracked well when we adjusted the cracker's screw for their size. 5Makes cracking pecans so easy!! Makes cracking pecans so easy. At first I applied too much pressure and smashed my pecans to smithereens. Applying just a little pressure and if the pecan doesn't crack, I turn the pecan around the other way and apply the same amount of pressure and pecans come out in halves. Saves my hands by not having to squeeze other types of crackers to crack the pecan. 5Best style of nutcracker, but not perfect No one has invented the perfect nutcracker that removes shell and leaves nuts intact, but this style gives more control than others I know. Adjust the threaded piston to firmly hold the nut and use the lever to apply just enough pressure to crack. Works best when the lever starts close to the 45 degree angle shown in the picture. As you move away from that angle, it takes more force to break the shell and you can end up with nut pieces scattered everywhere. You might want to do this outdoors if whether permits because it will be a bit messy. You'll also want a thin-bladed knife or similar instrument to help pry some nut meats from the shell - like I said, it's not perfect. 4Saved me a bunch of pain and time. I liked this nut cracker. I have 2 pecan trees that really produced last season -- over 10 gallons of nuts -- that I cracked by hand. Until I got this cracker, my hand was sore. After getting it, the process went much quicker. As someone else says, it can get a bit messy (I had to clean up after using it), but it got the job done. It also slid around a bit for me, so I had to use one hand to hold the cracker down and one to use the lever. Some "grabby" type of material on the base would have been nice, and I might yet add my own, not just because of it sliding, but if you are working on a wood table, the finish may be scratched if it does move. 4
