Customer Reviews

A Tale of Two SpatulasI ordered two of these spatulas. One had been conditioned well and had a beautiful swirled grain. It was smooth/slick to the touch. The other arrived as raw wood, almost grey from dryness, and was not sanded. The grain is a straight up and down line, it does not appear to be olive wood. The first spatula deserves 5 stars, the second zero. If they get their quality control right, they will have a winner. 3ExcellentVery nice! Large spatula that will get lots of use. I love olive wood utensils and this one is nicely finished from wood with handsome wood-grain. I particularly like the curved "blade". It makes turning and scraping so much easier than flat ones.I used to use wooden utensils from those cheap soft-wood sets you find in mesh bags in mass-merchants and grocery stores. But I always worried my about how sanitary the porous wood would be and just generally feel like a cheapskate using them. I then "upgraded" to bamboo, which it turns out splinters and chars too easily. Now that I've tried olive wood I will never go back and Eddingtons is one of the brands I buy that offer a good value to cost ratio. I don't think you need to spend $25+ on a single wooden spoon or spatula when half that or less gets you quality like this. 5Very DisappointedPut mineral oil all over these. Washed them up and when they dried, they had mold all over them. I bought some from the 99 cents store that I never put the oil on them, ever. They never grew mold. These were pricey so worth it to go out and buy mineral oil. Very disappointed. Threw them away. Not worth the send back trouble. 1Works well, but wish the handle was more comfortableI think its just ok. The wood grain of the olive wood is very nice. I like the size and length. I like that the tip is very sharp and thin at end. I use this for when I make a fried egg and need to flip it.I'm not crazy about the feel of it. Its handle is more square-ish, with edged corners. I wish they had rounded the edges. I will try and do that myself - some day when I have some free time. Its also a rather thin handle. Its just not a comfortable tool - but it works just fine and looks very pretty too. Otherwise, it is well made. So, kind of a love / hate thing.12/8/2015 - so 7 months later and I notice that the thin front edge has developed a crack right in the middle. This item is used gently so its not due to treatment. I also oil it periodically. I thought Olive Wood was supposed to be so tough! 3Beautiful, classy, smooth wooden "spoons"I now have 4 of these. I use them as wooden "spoons" because I like to scrape the entire bottom of the nonstickpan when I'm cooking a sauce or making stir fry. It never made sense to me to use an actual spoon because they barely contact the bottom of the pan. They are absolutely beautiful when new, like works of art. But, I always toss them in the dishwasher because I'm not picky. So now they don't look so pretty but they retain their smooth feel to the hand. I do not use them as any sort of spatula for flipping things, unless tossing stir fry ingredients in a big fry pan counts. 5My favorite wooden utensilI've had this spatula for a few months now, and though I have some other wooden utensils, this one immediately became my favorite. It's the first one I grab when I cook.First, it's beautiful - the patterns in olive wood are very unique, and I feel like I'm cooking with a work of art.Second, the shape of it makes it very useful. The sides have a slight curve to them that fits the sides of my favorite pan perfectly, and it's the ideal thickness - neither too thick nor too thin. It's also very lightweight, but yet it feels quite sturdy...like it will last a long time. The only reason I'm giving it four stars instead of five is because the edges of the handle are sharply squared off instead of being rounded and smooth, and it makes it a bit uncomfortable to hold. I sanded the edges smooth and oiled it, and now it's perfect.UPDATE March 22, 2011Two years later and it's still my favorite. I use it for just about everything; it's gained a lovely patina and is still going strong! :-) 4Going on ALMOST 4 YearsI bought this item on Amazon almost four years ago. I take really good care of my stuff so no dish washers, only hand wash. I scrub the end of the spatula by scrubbing in a downward motion only with a soft scrub type sponge. After every six uses or so, I coat the entire spatula with coconut oil and let sit overnight. The next morning I wipe all of the excess oil off of the spatula and return it to the drawer. This spatula is the perfect size, has the perfect angle, and is not only very durable but pretty wood to look at while cooking. If I HAD to list any CONS it would be that I would want the handle only slightly more round and not so much of a rectangular shape. I guess if it was THAT big of a deal I would just get out the sandpaper and modify it myself.Yes, I would highly recommend it to a friend. 5A totally Fantastic tool!I originally gave this tool 4 stars. That review is below. I've decided to change my rating to 5 stars. I still wish it was a tiny bit longer but it's a GREAT tool even at this length. I have several different wood spatulas. This is my first pick when I reach for a spatula. This wood really holds up to heat. Even after a couple of years of serious stir fry it shows no deterioration at all. You really should buy one! I m getting a second one as a spare. I would hate to ever be without one.I really like this spatula. It's nice to have a wood tool that's not bamboo. Itks quite solid and the wood is very very hard. Due to the type of curve Lefties probably will want a different spatula (i'm a rightie). I think the angle of the working end would make it awkward to use in your left hand. I'd give it 5 stars if it was an inch or 2 longer. 5It Broke! It is a nice looking Spatula and I was super excited when I found it because I have one that is similar I purchased years ago and use daily so I wanted a second one. This one arrived and was super bendy and then I was mixing rice today and it completely snapped in half! Such a bummer! 1The size of the spatula was great and I was excited to use it to make ...The size of the spatula was great and I was excited to use it to make a roux but when I put the spoon into the oil in the pot, a burnt chemical smell hit me and I noticed small bits of wood in the oil. The spatula, itself, was burning and smelled horrible so I had to throw out the roux and at the spoon. It doesn't seem like this has happened to anyone else in the reviews but this was obviously a serious problem for me. 1
