Customer Reviews

Not for card makers!Oh how I wish I had read more one star reviews. The cutter does not have one of the most important markings 4.25 !!! Right where the cutter ends is where it would be, even the fold out arm doesn t have it. So I won t be able to use this to cut my cardstock for making cards. Super disappointing!Other issues: the plastic is not as sturdy as past cutters I have had. I despise the blade being between the plastic instead of on the edge so I can see what I m doing. The arm should make definitely be on the bottom. And when I put my 12x12 paper on it IT COVERS THE NUMBERS on both sides!!!! So I can t even tell where to cut without lifting the paper to look. What a horrible purchase. 1As good as you can, economically, get... and VERY light.I have an "Elite" roller cutter, and,TWO Fiskars' paper trimmers; this being my latest addition. This trimmer is very similar to the other Fiskars paper trimmer I own... The most obvious improvementis the new wire line which shows you E-X-A-C-T-L-Y where your cut will be made. The cut-rail "smudgeguard" makes pivoting the rail bit easier since, now, there's something to hold on to.Contrary to claims, I cut 5 sheets paper, but, certainly not 7. Maybe news-paper, but not plain old paper.BECAUSE this is sold world-wide, there just ISN'T any instruction booklet provided... in ANY language. 4Not for Home Office or ClassroomsThis is a toy. It's for cutting newspaper coupons and random home use. It's not for the home office or classrooms. It claims to cut a 7 sheet capacity, but it will barely cut 4 sheets of 20 lb paper, or 3 sheets of 24 lb paper at a time. The blade is a TINY (maybe 2 mm) triangular piece of metal instead of the handle length blades we're used to seeing in other paper cutters. Because you're dragging that tiny piece of sharp metal along the length of the paper, it's pulling up on the paper and leaving a jagged edge, if you try to cut more than a sheet at a time. Then there's the whole problem with measuring when the cut line is not at the edge of the ruler and the swing arm hinges out around 4-5 inches-- just where you need to position your 8.5 " width paper to cut it in half. 2A decent light-use cutter, with readily available replacement bladesOverall, I've had good luck with this cutter. It's not perfect for what I do, but it's as good as any other cutter of this style.Cutting paper:I don't cut paper very often, but I'd say 3 or 4 sheets of standard copy paper will cut nicely, and just 1 or 2 pieces of card stock at a time, depending on weight. This has a shallow blade, so if you're cutting lots of paper and need to cut thick stacks, this cutter is not for you. You really need a guillotine cutter for that kind of work. What I cut:I use my cutter to cut sheets of vinyl decals, which are pretty thick. There is a waxy backing paper, the adhesive vinyl, plus a layer of over-laminate. With such a thick material, I only cut one sheet thickness at a time. This cutter can handle 2 of my decal sheets, but I like precise cuts and the sheets slide against each other easily, so I just cut one at a time. I've chosen not to use a guillotine cutter for this work because I want my cuts to be extremely precise, and I want to work quickly. I have my decal sheets printed with cut guides, which allows me to line up my cuts quickly.BladesI'm often cutting hundreds of vinyl decal sheets at a time, so my blades dull quickly. I tried the Fiskars cutter because I could buy a 2-pack of replacement blades for half the price of a new cutter. Previously, I had been using a similar cutter made by Westcott, but I was having trouble finding replacement blades, and I didn't want to buy a whole new cutter every time my blade was dull. The wire guide:I wasn't sure what I thought of the wire guide at first. I kept getting my sheets hung up on the wire as I slid the sheet along. Now that I've gotten used to it, I don't get caught up on the wire very often, and I generally like the feature. The wire is good for eye-balling cuts, but it moves a bit while you're cutting, so don't rely on it for lining up 100% straight and precise cuts. I have cut guides printed on my material. My wire hasn't frayed or broken like other users have reported, but with heavy use it has warped a bit.The measuring arm:The swing-arm measuring guide is nice. If I want the dimensions of something to be precise, I measure it and mark it first. Just like in woodworking, measure twice, cut once. For rough eye-balling, the measuring guide on this works just fine.My husband commented that this cutter 'feels left-handed' and that's because I AM A LEFTY, so I use it upside down! When you're a southpaw, you get used to using items backwards or upside down, and it feels second nature to many of us. I turned the cutter around for him, and he said, "Oh, well that's better."My reasons for 4 stars instead of 5:1. The wire does eventually warp.2. The orange blade housing sometimes flies out while you're using it. It's not a tight fit. It might fit loose by design so you can easily install a replacement blade, but it's irritating and slows down me down when I'm in a good rhythm.3. It slides around on your desk or table easily. I've had other cutters come with foam dots underneath, and it helped. I've cut my own from craft foam and stuck them to the bottom. You could also use a non-slip-grip mat under your cutter. 4Nice paper trimmer I always had a paper trimmer growing up. It was one of the big heavy guillotine types. Now that I'm in an apartment and don't have an office area, I needed something smaller and portable. I went through a lot of pages worth of trimmers and decided on this one. Not just because I'm familiar with the brand but because it has an easily viewable wire that shows exactly where you'll be cutting. A lot of the other ones didn't have that so you don't know where you will be cutting the paper. I personally will be using this to easily cut my coupons, pictures as well as documents. For my needs, this one is perfect. The paper clamp lifts up so you can easily side paper in and out and also give you an area to hold so you don't smudge any ink. It is very easy to use. Just insert the paper where you want to cut it, and slide the blade across. Overall, for me, this is exactly what I needed. 5The cutting line guide-wire has proven to be very useful. I leave a hairline crop mark on my ...I've made a few hundred cuts so far in 65# card stock, stacked up to 3 deep. Cuts clean. The cutting line guide-wire has proven to be very useful. I leave a hairline crop mark on my work, and it makes it super easy to just match the wire to the marks for very accurate cuts. The box I received had a sticker on it from Fiskars noting that the guide-wire is now solid instead of stranded, so hopefully that helps avoid some of the problems from past reviews about the line being nicked or shredded.I had an older cutter from another brand that used a magnet to hold the cutter down and the paper in place. This cutter is lacking that feature, though it does still seem to hold the work down OK using the little tab. I only screwed up once with a slider.I would like this cutter better if the base was sturdier/heavier. It's a very light injected plastic. It does the job just fine, but it feels cheap and slides around easier. At this price, though, I can't complain much. Well worth the money. 4Good purchase!Bought this for my DIY wedding invitations.. Worked great!! The paper I was cutting was 80# & 88# cardstock. I cut them all individually so I don't know how well it does with multiple sheets, but it did a great job on what I used it for! Very happy with this purchase. 5Best in price, Flimsy in practicalityQuality of material: Very flimsy, it's not even solid plastic and the bottom is hollowed out. I used some thermocol to give it some weight and make it sturdier. The material is somehow affected by the slightest oil on your fingers and gets oily with smudge marks. Might want to keep that in mind. 2/5Price: Cheapest paper cutter you'll find. So can't ask for anything better than that. 5/5Practicality: Of course a paper trimmer's sole basis for judgment is how well it trims. The trimming blade is okay enough. It cuts without rough edges most of the time but sometimes it gets stuck on a sheet of paper or stock paper and creates rough fuzzy edges. The holding mechanism doesn't always hold the paper well and you need to take in account both the paper, and the trimmer. It can cut 1 paper at a time precisely. Any more than that and you're just asking for trouble. Even though it advertises as more than 5 papers at a time and it might be technically possible to trim3-5 sheets at once, I won't recommend it. 3/5DEFINTIELY not a heavy use trimmer. More like a makeshift trimmer you can sue for a few specific projects before discarding. 3Light as a feather. Not for everyday use.The reviews tell me, this may be a first paper cutter, for many of the reviewers. Not at all what was expected. It is as light as a feather and the first word that comes to mind, is "cheap".I don't like the fact that the cutting edge, sits so far from the right side and the "lift", unless you are left-handed, is annoying on the left side and unnecessary, in any event.Have been using a comparable Wescott for over 7 years, but the groove finally became worn to such a degree, had to find another one. Grabbed this one, because I needed it quickly and because of the positive reviews. Should have known better and stuck to my own opinion. Will keep this for an emergency, but going shopping for a better trimmer. 2Seems low quality but really does a good job.Feels cheap, looks cheap but is actually quite functional.I use this to cut mailing labels and printed stickers and vinyl decals. So it is not used on regular paper...which is a testament to it. When I un-boxed it, I was concerned. It weighs literally almost nothing. It is cheap feeling in the hand. It is an item that I am sure if it was dropped would break...almost without doubt. But, the thing actually works really well. It is compact and easy to grab if you are taking it to another room. The blade is actually quite nice and cuts through multiple sticker sheets without problems. There is a tiny wire that helps you align your item to be cut with the cutting channel and when I saw it, I honestly thought it was a complete piece of garbage idea. But it has actually held up very well and it is extremely accurate. Just make sure you don't slide the paper above the wire. You will get used to it. I have cut roughly 200 sheets on it over the last few weeks and it has held up very well and does a great job.I would buy this item again. I do think it is flimsy and fragile but it does a good job and for the price, if I have to buy one every couple years I am good with that. 4
