    These have always worked for me.Works fine. I have used these for years, but I can see how some may think they have problems. Passive infrared is not pin point accurate and the sensing distance is definitely not constant. Also, there will be false triggers from wind, rain, storms, animals etc. Overall, if you understand the limitations of this type of sensor they are usually fine. One problem that I did have is that when my light goes on, it immediately goes back off because the photo sensor is picking it up. I glued a little short tube over the sensor on the bottom and it works fine. I have had to do this with all my lights because I don't have metal shields around the flood lights. This is a minor issue if you know about it and a big issue if you don't. I know you can aim the floods to help prevent this, but without the metal shield there is too much ambient light to fix it this way. I think Heath Co could save themselves a lot of returns if they made a little shade for the photo sensor. 5GREAT range, very DURABLE, and easy to adjust and installI have several Heath/Zenith light sets (5) that have these wonderful 270-degree motion sensors on them. I've had them at least 15 years. Not only is the range great, but it's also easy to adjust that range. The first set I installed (which comes with this motion sensor as part of the 2- light set) had the motion sensor recently go out. I thought I'd have to buy another whole light set and since the light set is a wonderful and efficient quartz halogen set, I was afraid I'd have to replace the whole thing with a more harsh-colored LED set. And I wasn't sure how the color was described and if it would match the other lights. So I called Heath/Zenith. There is no way they could have been nicer or more helpful. They explained exactly what to order, why, as well as the color details and how to install just the motion sensor. I was anxious because I'm not handy but their instructions were clear. A neighbor loaned me his ladder and we replaced the motion sensor just like the customer service technician said it would go, lickety-split!! It's been operating flawlessly, as all the others have, and I expect to get another easy 15 years out of this replacement. So far all of the other 4 sets are going great. I was so impressed with Heath/Zenith's customer service that given any option to buy their products over another company's, I'd go with Heath/Zenith in a heartbeat. If you have questions, call their Kentucky technical support people at 1-800-858-8501 5Specs not clearly defined in product description:Home use for controlling outside security lighting. This is a replacement of an identical item purchased 18 years ago. My old product was manufactured way before LED lamps existed. I read all of the available specs for this new product to make sure it was compatible with LED's. The first item listed in "Requirements" was, "Not for use with fluorescent lights". It seemed reasonable to expect it to work with LED's, right? Nope. I called support and they said it works only with incandescent lamps, you know, from the stone ages. I pointed out their lack of clarity in the "Requirements" section of the documentation but they are not interested in their lack of clarity because in the specs part of the documentation it states, under "Electrical Load - 500 watts maximum incandescent". Not good enough for me as this is misleading and not until you get the document in hand do you have that information. The seller needs to more adequately understand and explain the limitations since Zenith refuses to do so. 1Direct Replacement for the Heath Floodlight KitThe mounting height of the original is the biggest issue with accessing and replacing this product. Once you get to it, the instructions are inadequate. After turning off the power, remove the bulbs and if installed, the bulb shields. Next, the instructions don't tell you the easiest way to access the wires, if you're replacing the original, there is a small plastic cap in the center of the housing, pry it out and remove the screw. That leave the electrical box mounted to the wall and exposes the wires and connections. Push the foam seal back towards the electrical box, so it's out of the way. Remove the wire nuts to disconnect the power source wires and the light and detector part of the mount is free. On the original, the connections to the light sockets and motion detector were crimped together, so I simply cut the wires coming out of the old motion detector, leaving pig tails for me to connect the new detector. Note that the foam seal my be damaged and need to be replaced before you connect all of the wires, as they pass through the center of the seal. Replacement seals are usually available at a hardware store or home center. 5Add dual-bright to other lighting fixturesAfter failing to find attractive lighting fixtures that had the dual-bright/motion sensor and dusk to dawn features I bought this and installed it at the peak of my garage. Then I wired it to two lighting fixtures that I installed 60-watt halogen bulbs that can be dimmed as well as give off excellent light when at full-brightness. Now I have really nice fixtures that incorporate the dual-brightness and motion sensing features. Very easy to do, only took me about an hour to wire up. 5excellent motion sensor and dimmerThis is a replacement for one that lasted about a dozen years until the light started flickering (with multiple bulbs). It goes on at dusk at half power, and stays on for however long you set it: 3 hrs, 6 hrs, or all night. Then, if it detects motion, it will go to full power for however long you set it: 1 min, 5 min, ... If it is set to go off after, for example, 3 hours after dark, the motion sensor still works. If it detects motion, it will come on full power. There is a sensitivity setting so that passing cars do not set it off. Well designed and durable. 5Heath/Zenith HZ-5316-BZ - Wide field of viewI used it to replace the sensor on a Heath Zenith SL-5411-GR-C motion sensing light fixture. The original sensor had the strange problem of not turning the lights on in cold weather. When spring came around, it worked. This HZ-5316-BZ has a 240 Degree view, which is better than the 150 Degrees of the 5411. I turned the DualBrite feature off. Didn't: need it. 5Load Side WorkaroundAs others have mentioned, the load needs to be either an incandescent lamp(s) or a dimmable LED lamp(s). In my case, I was replacing a motion sensor that was connected to a relay supplying power to many lamps. Other cheapo motion sensors have powered the relay coil without any issues, but the Heath-Zenith would not activate the relay. As a fix to make the sensor operate the relay correctly, I installed a light socket for a 7 watt C7 incandescent lamp on the load side of the motion sensor, in the same box the motions sensor is located. The press in lamp socket just fits the 1/2" threaded hole in the two different aluminum boxes I tried. Since the filament in the 7 watt lamp glows so dimly, I do not expect it to fail for a very long time. However, using a relay to power a heavy load does eliminate DualBrite as an option. 38 foot range.This is the second Heath/Zenith sensor used in this location. The first one lasted about 4 years and had adequate range but not excessive. Recently it was self triggering frequently. The replacement I just got had a range of about 8 feet with the sensitivity turned all the way up although on the extreme side, it was better.Something like this should have a near zero out of the box failure rate. I am going to see what the local electrical supply house has. It is probably more expensive but it may be worth it. 2Really disappointedI have been a happy user of the Heath Zenith Dual Brite motion detectors for 20+ years across a couple of houses and a few applications. After surviving numerous blizzards, countless 100+ degree days and even a hurricane, my 17+ year old detector finally died of old age and I ordered this as a replacement. It showed up quickly and I installed it immediately so that I once again could have light on the driveway. It quickly became apparent that the "on time" switch was defective and I only had a choice of the lights being on for either 1 minute or 20 minutes. My preferred time of 5 minutes was not functioning so back it went. Again, a replacement got to me quickly from Amazon and it was installed that day. Once it got dark, it was obvious I had a problem. The lights never turned off and the red led blinked continuously, indicating it was seeing something . By the time I was done covering up parts of the detector to see what it was "seeing", the ENTIRE sensor was not only covered with black electrical tape but a cover was put over the tape -- and it was still "seeing" something! Not possible. A call and an email to HZ customer service resulted in responses that said that CFL's., Fluorescents,, and motors on the same circuit could cause this problem. A couple of thoughts -- my 17+ year old unit never had this problem and after looking for what is on that circuit, not only didn't I find CFL's, etc., I couldn't find anything else at all on this circuit! I looked at the reviews on Amazon and found someone who had similar problems and then went to Lowe's to buy a similar HZ motion detector which solved the problem. I thought it was a long shot but with no other options, I went to Lowe's, bought HZ model number SH-5316-BZ, and installed it. Works perfectly! It is slightly different in its functionality because the lights dim and go bright slowly, but the important thing is that it works. I am on my way back to Lowes to buy a spare. I may need another in 17 years or so! 1
