Customer Reviews

Used for lathering cream Using this for lathering shaving cream as suggested elsewhere online. The extra surface area from the ridges make this unexpectedly amazing for lathering soap. Could not believe how well it works in less than 10 seconds, would recommend this to anyone looking for a shaving bowl. 5Rinses easy, and fast to clean This has become my go to shave bowl. The flared edge keeps my brush handle from hitting. The ridges inside help make a lather very fast. Rinses easy, and fast to clean. The only thing that I would change ,is to add a texture to the outside. I have tried quite a few different bowls. Most are too smooth on the inside to adequately whip up a lather, too small, too heavy, or all three. The ceramic does not get cold as fast as metal. I'm very happy with this one. If you use a bowl to lather, this is the best one. 5Happy with the purchase! Came to know about Suribachis from Ms.Alice Waters' Masterclass. Wanted one made in Japan, but couldn't find any cheap enough. Bought this one. It's pretty good. We use it to grind toasted sesame for making tahina, and to grind raw garlic for raita. Much better tool than a mortar and pestle set for such tasks. It's light weight and easy to clean. 5Simplistic and Competent This is my first mortar and pestle and got this because my kitchen has a Japanese theme. The ceramic is beautiful and functional. Made a semi-pesto as soon as I got it. I didn't think it would work after I spent a couple minutes just trying to mash up some roasted garlic. But after adding the olive oil, basil, salt, and some dried herbs everything really came together quick. Also surprised how easy it was to clean. Just some hot running water was enough to get almost everything out of the nooks and crannies. The only negative I have to say is that the wooden pestle I got has a lanyard hole that splintered out. Would've been nice if it came with a cheap twine or leather lanyard to go with it. The rest of the pestle is smooth though and it didn't really stain from the green basil. Will finish with a mineral oil to give it some protection. 5small and perfect for grinding sesame seeds or herbs I bought this to grind toasted sesame seeds to put over my rice. There is nothing like the taste of freshly roasted and ground sesame seeds over rice.I have bought the ground sesame seeds in the jar at the health food store but the taste does not compare. It's a perfect small size. It works very well although some of the seeds do get caught in the grooves and need to be shaken or brushed out.It suits my need and is a very nice looking bowl.I'm sure I will find more uses like crushing herbs etc. The price was right and I am very happy with my purchase and I would recommend this bowl. 4Great for Maldon finishing salt...label is a nightmare to remove Looks nice and is easy to use with the included spoon. I have bamboo accessories on my kitchen counter, so this fit right in. A magnetic closure on the lid holds it fast so it won't open by accident, but is easily accessed when you want your salt. I took one star off for the horrible way the label is glued to the outside of the item. I mean, that bad boy was almost impossible to remove...had to use a solvent and a scrubber to get it all off! Hey, why not afix the lable to the outside of the shrink-wrap and make life easier for everyone? 4Not a real suribachi All show and no go. Grinding ribs are shallow and dull, not the deep, sharp Vee of a working suribachi, if you ever used a real suribachi. If not, this isn't how it's supposed to work. 1Wish it were heavier, but it truly does the ... Wish it were heavier, but it truly does the job and is attractive as well. I use it to grind sesame seeds for goma-ae dressing , which is the only way my Japanese future husband will eat vegetables. Would purchase again! 4Does what you need it to. Excellent size for someone who only cooks for one or two people. The glaze on the outside is even and well applied. The texture on the inside isn t too course or fine. The pestle (surikogi) is about the expected quality for the rest of the item. You may find it desirable to replace it with a higher quality wood down the line but the one in the set will be enough for most people 4Pretty good It works pretty well. I get the impression some reviewers were expecting something heavy that sits on the counter while grinding, but this is a perfect size to hold in my left hand while grinding with my right. The grooves are nice because at a certain point in grinding, I can switch to more of a swirling motion around the bowl, rather than just doing a crush-and-twist the whole time. Some of the ground spices do stay in the grooves. Inverting and tapping gets most of it, but you're going to lose some to the grooves. I'm OK with it. We're talking about such a tiny layer of spice dust that hangs on. And, in some applications, you could probably use a liquid ingredient to salvage some of that, if it's really a big deal. It washes up fine with a brush. One complaint I might offer, which may contradict the praise I just gave about its size, is that the small size does allow certain spices to fly out (a specific mustard seed incident comes to mind). I think this could be prevented by starting with a small amount and gradually adding more, so it's not too many seeds at once. But this is one place where I think a larger mortar or an electric grinder may be better.I am also not a huge fan of the wooden pestle. As with a lot of wooden implements, flavors and aromas can kind of hang onto the grain, and this is especially true when we're talking strong flavors and aromas such as spices. It's not a major problem, and I haven't noticed that it imparts unwanted flavors to the next batch of spices or anything like that. All in all, it's good for what it is. In hindsight, I would probably just skip it and get an electric grinder, but this works if you are into the fun of grinding by hand. 4
