Customer Reviews

Great hutch! I absolutely LOVE this! It was exactly what I was looking for. It came in 3 boxes, one for the buffet, one for the hutch and one for the wooden buffet top. It took me 3 hours to put together. The only help I had was to have a second person help me flip over the big assembled pieces as needed. Super easy. The pieces are all very well made. I've assembled a lot of different furniture pieces in the past, from places like Walmart and Target, and this is by far the best quality I've come across. The unit as a whole is very sturdy, and the pictures are true to color. 5This was (and is) a great addition to my dining room. When I first started shopping for 'china cabinets', I wanted something practical - attractive, but useful. After scrolling through quite a few sites and pictures and descriptions, I came across this cabinet and I was happy. I read the reviews and I looked at the specs and decided to purchase it.I actually put this together myself (which I do not recommend - you need someone to help). I got really frustrated but that was only because I was doing this alone and it was difficult (not impossible, but again, I suggest getting assistance). I think they actually offer assembly service.Once it was put together, that only validated my decision to purchase this. I was able to put some of my mom's (she passed away this year) tea sets that she collected on display as well as use it for things that I plan on using as well. I use the drawers for candles and baking accessories. It has a wine cubby that holds 9 bottles of wine which I have full of red, whites and chardonnay. It also has a cubby above it for whatever (I use it for mixing bowls). This is very good for my dining room. It is a little tight squeeze (as I have a large dining room table set in the same area), but again, very pleased with the space. I may rearrange in the future but I am happy the way it is now.Just a note: It says to keep it out of the sun (which is interesting). Also, note that this comes in a smaller size (basically that means instead of 3 drawers, it has two).I put pictures below. 5Looks good for the price; some difficulties in assembling; some durability questions Pros: Look good and functions well when finally assembled.Cons: Took several hours (sometimes with the help of a second person) to assemble the buffet for the bottom and several more to assemble the hutch for the top; Some holes were not drilled deeply enough and required more drilling; Two large pieces were shipped badly damaged (in undamaged packaging) and it took several weeks of calls and emailed photos to get replacements; Comes in three heavy boxes and requires a large area (about 10 x 15 feet) for spreading out the parts and for assembling; The included hex wrench is inadequate for assembling, you need a better hex wrench, a good Philips head screwdriver, and maybe a drill; Most of this (except the cherry finish wood top) is particle board covered by thin black plastic and damages easily. 4I'm impressed! Ok, let me preface this review by saying that I've put together a LOT of furniture like this. This is one of the best as far as how it was carefully packaged, all the hardware was separated and labeled, holes were drilled accurately, and instructions were clear. However, if you don't have a lot of experience with putting together furniture, you might wind up frustrated. Some of the instructions seem impossible - like telling you to screw in a screw from the back...while it's laying on its back. But I'm kinda weird because I enjoy this kind of stuff. It's challenging, like putting together a jigsaw puzzle.I'm a 51 year old woman, and I put it together by myself with only minimal help from my husband (during the times when I required more than two hands, and lifting the hutch on top of the buffet). The furniture is very sturdy and high quality materials were used. The windows in the hutch doors were glass, not plastic. No cardboard or particleboard. One word of caution though: I bought this to serve as a coffee bar for my Keurig 2.0. It just /barely/ fits, and only right in the middle where the arch is highest. (Remember you have to leave room for it to open to put the coffee pod in!)All in all, I love this piece of furniture. Here are a couple of hints--keep a vacuum handy to clean up the Styrofoam bits as you are unpacking the box and a damp cloth to wipe every thing down. Lots of dust. Also, painter's tape it very useful to tape parts together until they can be screwed in place. This saved me loads of time and frustration. 5Solid Piece, needs a patient assembler (or two) Overall, for the price, the finished product is worth every penny and I would buy again/recommend to a friend. If I could do half star increments I would say 4.5 stars because of assembly but I can't and really, once I got it together I was pretty happy with the piece. Now to go into details...Materials: For the price I couldn't ask for better materials. It's all wood which is hard to find at this price point. (Except maybe the back panels which are a very convincing composite) The wood is "Asian Hardwood" which is code for rubberwood. Rubberwood is a softer wood that is between pine and cedar on the hardness scale. So as long as you're not expecting to get solid oak furniture for less than $400 you'll be pleased. Others have said that the windows in the upper doors are plexiglass- if they are, it's a very convincing plexiglass because I'm 99% sure mine is tempered glass. Also, the "cherry" top is a bit darker than the pictures which I don't mind, it's very pretty, but be warned if you are trying to match it to other pieces.Packaging: there is an insane amount of packaging and the styrofoam sheds like crazy. It comes in three boxes (four if you count the box for the top/hutch that just contains the glass doors which is inside the box for the hutch/top). Pretty sure volume wise that the boxes are 60-70% styrofoam. It might be excessive but I wouldn't advise that they change that because it does a pretty good job of keeping the pieces safe during shipping but be warned. Try to open it in a garage or patio or somewhere that the styrofoam fluff will be easier to clean up. Or have a vaccuum handy. And I hope you have access to a dumpster because this will take up your entire curbside trashcan if you don't. Pretty sure I clogged the trash chute in my building with just the styrofoam from one box. Oops.Assembly: If I could dock half a star for this portion I would but its not fair in retrospect. And once you have it together it's kinda of irrelevant -anyways. All I can say is have patience. It can be done by a single person but for sanity and time considerations, I would advise getting someone to assist you. I did it alone 80% of the time and it took me about 5 hours plus a few breaks. I mainly used help in stabilizing pieces while I attached them to each other. It's also quite heavy and you have to hoist the top onto the bottom so assistance in that phase is really valuable. Assembly is not the most intuitive and the instructions aren't that great. There is literally one step that just says attach approx 8 pieces to each other and you just kind of have to figure out in what order it works best. Also, some of the "preattached" piece aren't attached so well so it helps to go over those pieces to tighten the those screws. There were also few holes that were a little tight and I had to widen just a hair. I didn't even use the drill for this- I just hand twisted the bit a half turn- I think those holes were just under threaded or maybe some paint got in them. In the end though my piece came together nicely and I feel like it's pretty sturdy. Just let give yourself plenty of time and have a glass of wine when you're done. :) 5The material of the wood is good. It all felt strong and firm The material of the wood is good. It all felt strong and firm. That is the full extent of praise. One of the corners arrived cracker despite not a single piece of damage to the cardboard packaging. Speaking of packaging, We filled up 3 garbage bags full of styrofoam. I'm not an environmentalist but that seems like way too much of a carbon footprint for 1 buffet. A lot of the carpentry is just sloppy. Many of the drill holes were off by as much as 1/2 inch and required some effort on my part to align them properly. I am no amateur, I enjoy building such products and am pretty close to pro level. The metal cam lock nuts (the ones you rotate about 200 degrees that attach to a cam lock screw) are poor quality and make it difficult to tighten properly. After putting it all together, there are multiple gaps throughout the product if you look for them. The average house guest would not notice them unless he was investigating. Overall, the product looks well and functions well but may not come together easily for the beginner furniture assembler. 3Most frustrating thing you will ever attempt to assemble First of all, it looks pretty nice. Not expensive furniture quality but doesn't look too cheap either. I'll start with what I like: black finish looks nice and the medium cherry top looks and feels nice and good contrast with the black. Mine came with real glass, as some have stated it was plexiglass. Also no smell whatsoever as others have said it had a chemical smell. The size is perfect for my needs and not too deep that it sticks out from the wall. Price was reasonable and came well packed in three separate boxes. Now what I did not like: Unpacking literally took an hour. Why? Partly because it was packed well and each piece was wrapped and taped, but it was such a mess that I had to do it outside. The worst part was that every single piece was covered in some kind of dust that looked like fiberglass particles. They were all over me, in the air, and on everything around me. I had to take a shower when it was all done. I used a swiffer duster and had to dust every piece front and back. I would recommend using a vacuum with brush attachment because it is that bad. Next comes assembly. Directions were not the worst I've ever seen but still lacking. For example, one step says to insert the drawers but two pages later in a different step is to assemble the drawers. The backs to each piece is a jigsaw of five pieces that you have to try to hold together (but keeps falling apart) while you attempt to attach another piece. I am very skilled at carpentry and using tools but this took hours to assemble. I was going to use it without the wine storage but the shelf has grooves in the bottom that would look odd with nothing in it. Now for my biggest gripe... several of the small stickers were placed where they would be visible (not too big a deal) but there were twoLARGE "warning" stickers right on the finish that are impossible to remove. One is right on the side panel in plain view. I mean really??? Who does that and why not put it on the back. It took me another hour justto get these off and still has glue reside where I was afraid it would ruin the finish. It was not like some stickers that come off clean... it's like they are permanently placed and meant to not been able to be removed. What piece of furniture has warning decals saying that it may fall over? Ridiculous.Overall I would have given this 4 stars, but between the idiotic warning stickers, difficult assembly and the fiberglass dust - it just made m wish I had paid more for a piece from the furniture store. 3Solid piece but poor assembly instructions - damage in shipment Once the product is assembled and in place plus the price I want to give it 5 stars.Where there are issues are with shipment and assembly.Shipment:There does seem to be an issue with damage during shipment. We ordered this and when my wife emptied the 3 boxes it came shipped in she realized there was significant damage on some of the pieces. There is a large sticker on the boxes with an email address and phone # for customer service. But no one responded to the emails and the phone went straight to a message box. She then contacted Amazon who quickly offered to have a new one shipped out and the old item picked up which was great on Amazon's part! Though it was a real pain putting everything back in the box and lugging everything back outside - these boxes aren't moved easily! When we got the new shipment there was still some minor damage such as some small dings in the finish that required a little bit of paint for a touch up.Assembly:I've been spoiled by Ikea - the assembly is no Ikea lol. The instruction are brief but pretty straight forward to follow. However, we ran into an issue with assembly. pieces are put together with wooden dowels prior to locking together with screws. Those dowels don't fit snugly together and assembled pieces would constantly come apart - which was quite frustrating. This required adjust the sequence of how parts are assembled adding to the time required to complete the build. So long story short - assembly was annoying. But - once you have shaken off all those frustrations and the hutch is where you want it - it looks great and feel pretty solid! 3Sturdy and pretty. Only a couple of minor complaints. This is a decent piece of furniture. It is indeed wood (mostly) and has pretty good functionality. I was able to put it together after several hours, with a little help. Instructions were easy to follow. What is notable is that there were two of the same parts that were damaged - the blocks or planks of wood that have the roller gear for the drawers were ripped off. It seems it's common for those pieces to be damaged or loose during shipping. Although, there is a way to screw them back on if the damage is minimal (I recommend you purchase wood glue to help reinforce those blocks if they are detached on arrival).Things I Like:Once it was put together it looked great. It is an actual piece of furniture, not like the usual assembled pieces you get for pretty cheap. I believe this will hold up very well to moving or transfer. I was able to fit my microwave (a Panasonic 1.2 cu. ft - for reference) on top, as you can see in the pic. The microwave does extend about 3/4" from the edge, but the feet of the microwave are nearly 2" from the edge, giving it plenty of room to stand firmly. The bottom cabinets have quite a bit of storage. The wine cubby is sturdy. I believe it's worth $400 given it is made mostly of wood. I wouldn't pay more than that if I found this at a furniture store, especially if I had to put it together. But, worth it nonetheless.Things I Don't Like:One thing I can complain about are the drawers. They are functional and have at least a little room for storage, but one doesn't open smoothly, it has to be yanked slightly. It may something to do with the damaged wood plank that has the roller gear. The plank itself wasn't damaged during shipping, only detached from the base of the piece. I screwed it back in to the correct position, however the wheel seems to be catching on something when I pull out the drawer, indicating a possible misalignment. Anyway, I believe I can fix it but I haven't tried yet.Additionally, and this may be a minor issue for most, are the glass pieces in the doors on the hutch. The glass is not firmly fixed causing it to rattle every time you open or close the doors, the drawers, or bottom cabinets. But, that also can be fixed relatively easy.Overall:I would recommend this piece to others - even with the need for few tweaks such as wood glue etc,. Other than that, it's solid and looks nice. 4I love this buffet So, I love this buffet. I searched multiple different sites for this particular one, because #1 it had both sizes in stock and the one with hutch. I get compliments every time someone sees it. So why am I giving it 4 stars instead of 5 you might ask? #1 The stainless steel top scratches very easily. I bought this thinking to only have decorations on top, which weren't to be moved, so it wouldn't be a problem, however I'm still in the midst of a move and placed the pictures (wooden frames) that I was going to hang above it, on the steel top and they scratched it the minute they touched it. I can cover it with a decoration, but I was a little disappointed in myself. #2 The wine rack at the bottom doesn't actually screw in or stay tight within the buffet. You can actually wiggle this around and pull it out, which makes it feel a little cheap. I worry that I'm going to pull something out and the whole thing will pull out, breaking what's in there. It is however good if you don't want to use it as a wine rack, so I suppose it's all in want you want to use it for. #3 The storage is small. I don't mind this part, because it fit perfectly where I wanted it and holds everything that I want, but be aware that it is smaller in size and can't store a whole lot. 4
