Customer Reviews

Jagwire Pro Housing CutterSo far, so good, 5 stars for now. I just purchased this item due to all the high reviews it received over other similar tools. Just as most have said - it cuts through the actual cable, the housing, the housing with cable, and the little awl built in to the handle does a nice job of opening the hole up. And - it crimps on both the end caps for the cable, and the housing end caps with no problem. I used this rebuilding my and my wife's mountain bikes. What started with a "cart" full of various inexpensive single purpose tools, ended up as this item for less than the total of the cheaper items which would have no doubt failed over time. The only thing left to see is if this thing lasts and continues to cut so cleanly over the long haul. If it doesn't, this review will be amended accordingly. Right now - I'm glad I bought this. 5Great toolI replaced all the housing a cables on my commuter bike some time ago and used the old wire cutters in my tool box. It was ok, but definitely not ideal. It was my crappy commuter, so, whatever. Then my cable snapped on my road bike on a ride. I decided I was going to replace all the gear/brake housing and cables. I also decided a dedicated tool with the awl in the handle was what I was going to use to make the job easier. This tool did not disappoint. Cut everything cleanly and the awl opened the cut ends in the housing that got flattened during cutting. For the record, I used Shimano SP41 housing/cable set for the gears and Shimano DA 9000 set for the brakes. Result was shifting like butter and very responsive braking. 5Probably the best available tool for cable and housing workCuts housing and cables as cleanly as possible, contains an awl in the base of one of the handles, which was unexpectedly handy (I didn't have to go an find a separate awl in my misc tools box), crimps (has crimper in the handle portion near to the spring) both* housing and cable ferrules, has a device to close the handle, and overall handled very well and performed sufficiently for my job.Of note, I had initially purchased the Park tool brand version of this product based on their reputation as good toolmakers, however the tool was defective and had to be returned. It had a crimper but only for housing ferrules, no awl, and overall did not feel as sturdy as this product. 5Not worth the premium over alternativesNice set of cutters initially. Very good with compressionless brake housing, leaves a small burr with standard coil-wound. Cables cut cleanly. After a year of non-professional use trimming probably a hundred cables and housing pieces, it's now struggling to cut through the kevlar wrapper of Jagwire's own compressionless housing. I have to neaten the frayed ends with scissors. There's also a usability annoyance: the flip lock tends to obstruct the opposing handle and prevent a complete cut if you're not careful to tuck it out of the way.Sent a note to Jagwire. Didn't hear back. Not impressed. Doing this again, I'd buy Pedro's, XLC, or any of the others in mid-teens rather than paying the premium for this set. 2Not necessary, reallyIt's okay. That's what 3 stars means. It crushes the housing shut when you cut it. Then you bend it back open with the awl. Then you worry about the sharp burr sticking out, go find a utility knife, strip off 1/8"of the plastic sheath, plug the hole so you don't get grit and filings inside, file the burr off, and you're done. I suppose the same job could have been done with a pair of wire cutters and a prick punch, which means I wasted my money buying this. There is nothing magic about how it works.3Good tool, made very wellGood tool, made very well. Cuts through the cable housing and cables with ease. Leaves some tiny burrs when cutting the housing though, the built in awl helps reshape and clean things up a bit. I had a utility knife handy to clean excess plastic burs from the casing though. Nature of the beast I guess. Definetly alot better than my rusty old side cuts. Does a fine job crimping ferrules as well. I still think price is a bit steep for what it is, I would have given it 5 stars if it was around $15-18. 4this is far superior: very cleanYou may be initially put off by the price, but don't be. It is worth every penny. Comparing how well this cuts cable housing to other cutting tools, this is far superior: very clean, very easy, too. It also has proven to be very sturdy and well built. Don't think that you can size your cable housing with standard cable cutters. You won't get a clean cut. You definitely need a dedicated set of cable housing cutters, and you won't go wrong with these. 4Cuts housing and wire very easily. A couple of my housings were a little ...If you want to do cable work on your bike, buy this. You won't regret it. My cheap wire cutters that I use for stereo wire and stuff did not come anywhere close. They frayed the cables and were just a headache to use. I wish I had bought this earlier.Cuts housing and wire very easily. A couple of my housings were a little bit crushed on the cut end by these, but the awl in the handle fixed this in a jiffy. They lock securely in place, and can also be used to crush the little cable ends. 5The tool for bike cables.I changed out my bike handlebar recently and that meant I had to run new cables to fit the different shifter and brake placements.Previously I had been getting by with diagonal cutters and an awl but I decided to step it up for this repair and get a proper tool. It made all the difference in the world. It cuts housings and cables very cleanly. The built in awl is great and the crimper is passable.Honestly saved me a couple minutes a cable by having all the tools I needed (except hex tools obviously) in one hand. The built quality is solid and compares with ParkTool at a cheaper cost. The only issue I had with it is the crimping is further from the fulcrum than I'd like so it doesn't crimp as tight as a dedicated tool.Overall a very solid addition to my toolbox. 5Great Cutter, professional quality.I work part time in a bike shop and have used many cutters from Park, Sunlite, Pedros, Avenir and the like. These are on par with anyI have used, and better than most. I like their adjustability, the built in pin to uncollapse the inner sheath, if necessary, and the overall build quality. Considering the price, I don't believe you can spend more and get anything better. 5Good cutter by JagwireVery good cutters.I have been using weekly for three or four months now & they remain sharp.Great for cutting stainless steel cables & reinforced housings.Equipped with a pick, tucked safely away in the base of the handle, (so you can t poke yourself) so you can quickly ream out the cuts without hunting down another tool.Long handles provide good leverage & the spring is robust. The only flaw (minor) is the cable cap crimper does not close quite far enough. 5
