Customer Reviews

Gorgeous and WorksI can see why the kettle has gotten such good reviews. The design is brilliant: ergonomic and balanced handle that gently slopes down on the the side opposite the spout, which is an aid to pouring; wide opening for easy filling and cleaning; comfortable plastic handles that eliminate the need for fussing with pot holders. No whistle, don't miss it. The boiling is audible and the puffs of steam from the spout tell me it's ready.Looks terrific in my stainless kitchent, somehow managing to be both traditional and modern at the same time. Gotta love Japanese design. Pure, simple, elegant.Edit: After a year's use, I still like the kettle, but I see the problem with the built-in strainer. Mineral deposits routinely clog the holes on this unnecessary feature (why does plain boiled water need straining?) and make pouring sputtering and dangerous. One round of white vinegar and all is well again, but the strainer is a stupid feature. 4Very well designed would have liked a whistle attachmentI have to say when I first pulled it out of the box I was somewhat disappointed. On the picture it looks smaller. Upon examination I found it to be squat and as wide as my old kettle. So after using it a few months I decided I DO like it and would definitely buy it again. The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is that it's easy to forget it's on the stove, walk away, and find it's been boiling for longer than expected.Pros:Generous 2 qt. capacityIt being wide makes it heat up fasterHandle remains cool (for the most part unless I let it boil too long)Handle stays uprightHandle moves slightly to one side to enable fillingVery easy to cleanWhen pouring water in, the water doesn't spill out because of the rounded top.Appears very well madeCons:Because there is no whistle very easy to forget. Would have liked the designer to create a portable whistle to insert. 4Sleek, beautiful, pours perfectlyI am SO done with whistling teakettles. None of them pour properly or easily. I finally found this beauty--after scanning dozens of pages--and am in love with it. First of all, it is stunning, the matte finish very classy. And it pours the way a kettle should pour: simply, easily, smoothly, no nonsense, nothing to push, no need to strain your entire hand to get uncontrollable, splashy hot water out. Yes, it's expensive and worth every penny. It's Japanese and reflects their simple and lovely design ethic. It does not come with instructions--except in Japanese symbols--but I'm treating it with care and love, bringing water to the boil on medium high only and drying the outside carefully after each use. So if you're a tea aficionado as I am, treat yourself to this one. This company makes a few other things, and I can't wait till I can afford one of their pots. They're gorgeous, and I love gorgeous.Sori Yanagi Stainless Steel Kettle - Matte 5Super, yet not DuperIt captures heat to boil water very well. Yes, "over boiling," the handle will be hot to the touch--heat must go somewhere, right? Otherwise, this kettle does what is expected: well contain and efficiently boil water, with a lid that also effectively releases vapor at full boil with its holes and "loose fitting." When water not over-boiled, the pour is consistent and enough for 8 cups (6oz) of tea, easily. To other posts:--The unit is all stainless-steel... Mine, stamped, 18/8 18/0+Nb--Perceived "rust" is like rust on steel, yet discoloration of stainless-steel is not "rust," as we know of iron... I'm not supporting the mfg, but suggesting that, from a few pics of reviewers posted, that's not rust, but heat discoloration, NOT rust.--Will say, the affix of the "screen" to this kettle is, as has been posted in pics, NOT welded well, in fact shoddy. Yet, I know, without that shoddy affixed screen, the water flow from the spout would be disastrous! So, recognize faults as "after thoughts".......Otherwise, super-duper kettle! 4Where have you been all my life?Beautiful. Bellingham, WA, has a slogan that refers to the city as Subdued Excitement. The same could be said about this kettle. It's beautiful, understated, and without cause for being jubilant. Just so sweet to look at and use. My philosophy is that I am willing to spend money on things I use everyday, as this means I derive joy every day. Soft bath towels, ceramic-disc faucets, and tea kettles are included in this category. Among the best dollars I've spent. 5Cute cute cute!I love this little kettle. I have an AGA cooker so most tea kettles just don't heat up well. This kettle is a little thin on the bottom compared to the AGA kettle, but when full of water will sit flat on the hob. It heats water just as fast, if not faster, than the AGA brand kettle does. I love this kettle!!!!! Like many other tea enthusiasts, I have wasted so much money on other kettles that are just crappy. Price doesn't matter when it comes to finding a good kettle. The last one I bought, (won't mention any names!) was a rounded copper pot with a whistle, cost over 125. And took FOREVER to heat up. You'd think that.125. Kettle would heat up quickly, but it was the worst kettle that I ever bought! So I resorted to using a copper sauce pan to heat tea water in. When I saw this kettle, I asked the seller many questions, which they answered right away.If you are looking for the absolute best kettle on the market today, buy this one!Did I mention that I love this little kettle!!!! 5Exactly what I wanted for half the priceI initially saw the Yanagi Sori kettle (matte finish) in the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco a year ago during a long layover over from Hawaii back to my home in France. The kettle was selling for $150. I truly loved it but finally decided not to buy it as the price was just too high. Once home in France I regretted not having it. I searched online several times over the course of the year and was able to find the same kettle either at a similar price or the "mirror" finish for a lesser price, though the mirror finish was not what I wanted. I finally saw the matte kettle on Amazon for half the price of that of the Asia Art Museum. I ordered it right away on Amazon from Tokyo Wind. I used basic shipping, and it came just a few days later. It's perfect and exactly what I wanted. It's really subtle and beautiful, simple and elegant. I love seeing it on my stove each day. I couldn't be happier with it. 5Glowing ReviewThis kettle has been the center stone of our stove at home. Simple and elegant... Very fitting for our crowded kitchen. The steel used in this kettle is pure and untainted, dried calcium deposits are easily removed when it's accidentally left to shmelt on the stove for a couple hours... Just boil some vinegar for 10 minutes. What else can I say, boils well, tastes pure, and its made in Japan using high quality steel. On rust: the kettle may rust if you use it to boil salt water... We have left water in the kettle for days without any sign of rust. And if you do see rust... Just boil vinegar. 5Worst kettle I have ever experiencedWorst kettle I have ever experienced. It doesn't make a sound when the water boils, it spits water out quite far when pouring so that it gets all over the counter (I have never had a kettle do this) and it hard to keep clean on the outside. It is discolored no matter how hard I scrub with appropriate cleaner. I really can't understand the good reviews, which I read before purchasing. 1... this tea pot less than one year and am disappointed in the quality of this itemI have had this tea pot less than one year and am disappointed in the quality of this item. I bought it for the unique Japanese design and good reviews. The bottom has warped and is already rusting on the inside - I don't think the water I boil is safe to drink with flakes in it. Also, the handle only swivels to one side and the lid falls off when pouring the last bit of water out. I was expecting the function to equal the form of the nice-looking kettle, and for $60 expected a better product. 1
