    love it This is my second one and only rain gauge I really like. So easy to use and read. I always had it on my back deck, but since replacing that with enclosed room, had no good place to hang it and bought another kind, just not as happy.My husband rigged up a way to hang it off my chain link fenceThe only downside it does discolor over time, no matter how you clean, but still does what it is suppose to. A friend wanted my old one.. didn't bother him! 5A rain gauge you can see from a distance...just don't lose the red strip We've gone through a number of rain gauges over our lifetime...most of them the skinny upright tube types. As far as the durability of those tubes, it never seemed to matter how much we spent on it. Whether it was a plastic tube in a plastic holder or a glass tube in a metal holder...if we forgot to bring the tube in before a freeze, there would be just enough of a crack in the bottom that the tube would no longer hold water.I originally bought this waterfall rain gauge at our local Lowes a few years ago. With the larger-sized container and huge numbers, we were able to attach the holder to an inconspicuous spot of our furthest deck railing and still be able to read the gauge from inside the house. And it worked great for many years until this winter when it finally developed a tiny crack. I ordered a new one from Amazon. It's the exact same design as it was years ago; so I was able to just put the new measuring container into our existing holder.The only small issue that we've had with it is the floating red plastic guide. The rectangular piece continually floats on the water within and more easily allows you to read (from a distance) where the water level is. Only problem is that 2-3 times a year we get major pounding rain storms which exceed the 6" capacity. Sometimes I go running out to empty it as it fills; but most times I choose to stay dry in the house. In these instances, we've occasionally had to go looking for the small red strip because the torrential rain washes it out of the container once it reaches the top. Not a regular occurrence, thankfully; but it can happen...and has :) 5Smart, simple design. I really like this rain gauge! it's not beautiful, but it's extremely functional. We mounted ours to the deck railing right across from our patio door, so we have perfect visibility - I can just look outside at anytime so see how much rain has fallen. This is very helpful for anyone that has outside plants whether in the ground or in planters, so you can track how much water they are getting weekly - and therefore know how much more you need to supplement. I find it is also nice just to know when we get a heavy storm if as much has come down as it seemed like.Since this is clear plastic, it can get a little cruddy. Make sure to empty this out between rains, if you leave it full of water in the sun it will start to grow algae. I wish the plastic bar (it floats so you can see the water level) didn't sun-bleach and warp so quickly, but it doesn't really affect the performance of the gauge. You'll also need to make sure to take in in before winter. I left this out too long last season; it froze with rain inside and cracked. I liked it so much that I replaced it this Spring. 4Bad Red Level and Awkward Customer Service Unfortunately, after four months the red floating level bleached out and sagged. It is now a colorless object which affords no help when trying to read the gauge from more than 10 feet away. They should have used a colorfast dye in a non-warping plastic, both of which should be available from a local injection molding fabricator.I might add that I wrote them an email in detail and got a non-specific email response advising me to telephone their tech support people, and when I did that, I was asked whether I ever call them before? The lady did not have my recent email available to her. After I explained the purpose of the call, the lady explained to me that I had selected the wrong extension (I hadn't), because she didn't deal with weather stations and my rain gauge was considered a weather station. I asked her to transfer me to the proper person. She said she couldn't transfer me but she could give me the phone number for help with rain gauges or she could leave a note for them to call me back. I said leave the note. I am waiting . . ..It seems evident to me that the customer service is not provided with the means to handle calls efficiently. 4Finally -- one that works well on my deck! Finding a gauge that works on a deck that has a railing isn't as easy as one might think -- the overhang shields the gauge, or some sort of spacer has to be added to the mount; the only other option is one of those tubes that is mounted on top of the railing -- with a life span of a nanosecond. This gauge solves that problem! I love how it looks and being able to read it easily. I will take it in when it gets cold -- seems like an obvious thing.My only complaint is with the screws provided. I had this up 10 days before having to take it down to stain the deck -- in that short time, the screws were 100% rust since they sit down in a little well. I tossed those, went to the local hardware, and got brass screws. Better to do this from the beginning.I do wonder a little about accuracy. We had a "tropical storm" this week -- my neighbor down the hill says they had 4"; I had 6" according to my gauge. Perhaps hers is wrong! 5Perfect Waterfall Rain Guage Love this La Crosse Waterfall Rain Gauge. I have it hanging on a wooden fence. I stand in front of a window in my home, and can see it perfectly about 12 feet away. Not sure why, but I enjoy seeing how many inches of rain my area has gotten. It seems durable enough and is worth the price. 5Enjoy the honeymoon Top line: Very functional while it lasts, don't expect it to look great or last a lifetimeGood: Easy to install, easy to ready with big, clear numbers. The red strip is nice, though I don't have problems spotting the water line meniscus without my glasses from 10 feet through our kitchen window. Which is a good thing, because...Bad: The red strip quickly fades to pink and then white, at which point it becomes mostly useless. It also tends to stick to the sidewall of the gauge when I empty it and return it to upright. The gauge itself starts to yellow and get hazy like cheap plastic from the 80s/90s. Doesn't really impact performance, but does make it a bit of an eyesore. What keeps this at 4* instead of 3 is the fact that it cost less than $10 and lasted me two years (cracked during Hurricane Harvey--debris??).Other: I never compared to another gauge, so I can't speak to its accuracy 100%. It did seem relatively consistent with observed rainfall from recognized weather sources, if a little higher (10-25%) than the reported amount. 4Great idea that just doesnt work like you expect I saw this years ago and thought this was a great idea, I could see it at a distance and quickly tell how much rain fell. We attached it about 40 yards away on a fence post. Worked great for about a month, then we noticed the bright red indicator had faded to white in the sun. We adjusted to that, but then began to question the accuracy of the gauge after a hard rain. We found out the reservoir had a crack. Bought another and experienced the exact same pattern. I like the idea, if only it worked better. I just buy several at a time now and have one ready to when one breaks. 3well The metal screws were cheap/junk metal and 'stripped' as I tried to screw the plastic top to a board.We always know plastic can be iffy -- but junk metal??? 1Rain gauge that doesn't "weather" well At first, we liked the appearance of this rain gauge and the floating marker to aid in seeing the liquid level. As other reviewers have noted, the numbers and level marks are relatively easy to read from a short distance as long as there is something placed behind the clear plastic container to contrast the numbers and hash marks. The greatest disappointment is that within the first few months, the plastic container began to 'yellow' and the floating red marker has become a washed-out, sorta pink color(barely visible from a distance). Within 6 months, the plastic container was not only a sunbaked yellow but had also developed a haze similar to what you would see on aged automotive headlight housings. We purchased this item in April of 2013 and now, a year later, it's become extremely brittle and has cracked - rendering it completely useless. Also, as noted by other reviewers, this rain gauge consistently measures almost 2wice the amount measured by two other rain gauges on our property (both digital). Bottom line: it's susceptibility to sunlight and inaccurate measurement capability makes it bad choice as an outdoor weather instrument. 2
