Customer Reviews

Nice clock As advertised . The plugged in and within a couple minutes it down the temperature through the atomic clock feature. put the batteries in, screwed the sensir outside on my windowsill and tells the indoor and outdoor temperatures. The LED projection for the light and temperature gets a little fuzzy if you shined on the ceiling but it still definitely readable. The face is dimmable for night time . And the displays is big enough to read from across the room. 5Set it up first!!!! Decent clock, but a buyers note: You have to fully set it up to get any of the features to work, otherwise it thinks it is in "battery mode" and always runs too dim and wont look for the atomic signal. I almost sent mine back because it would go totally dim after 20 seconds... setting it up (setting time zone, C/F, etc) fixed this. That said, once set up, it runs nicely. The LCD is bright and can be read from 20' away, the outdoor thermometer has good range, and the projection is decently bright, albeit a tad small. 4Small, weak projection image flickers constantly - can't read without glasses This did not live up what other reviewers said about it.I need glasses to read a normal alarm clock. I purchased this to replace a great projection clock that had finally died.My hope was to use this so I could see the time at night, without having to put glasses on.Though other reviewers said they could see this without glasses, I can't.The projection image is very tiny and weak. The image is not intense unless it's just a few feet from the wall. The weak, thin image is not readable without (my) glasses. It also flickers constantly, alternating between displaying the time and showing "out _F" (see image). This image was taken with the clock just 2-feet from the wall, so the projected image is clear, though tiny.Packaging on this deserves an award for "most difficult to open." Seriously - it was almost impossible to open it - even with scissors. Not sure there is a better option out there, but this projection clock utterly fails to meet my needs. It's frustrating that others said it was easy to read at night without glasses, when it is not.If you want a projection clock you can read at night without glasses - look elsewhere. 1Buy something else. Not worth the money. I purchased this unit to replace an older version that lasted for almost 20 years. I wanted one that had atomic clock and outdoor sensor. The atomic clock wouldn't connect unless it set outside, and then it took over night to connect. After a day in the house in proximity to a southern window it lost connection. I guess I have to take it out every day to get it to work. Second point of failure, the outdoor sensor has now failed. Won't read above 58 or below 41 degrees. changed batteries and that didn't work, then changed location of sensor, that didn't work, brought sensor inside next to clock unit with no change. Last fix that I tried worked, It went into the trash and bought different unit from local shop. 1Projected "time-only" never updates - Really? When my cheapo Oregon Scientific Atomic Projector clock finally stopped projecting numbers clearly (after almost 10 years, not bad, I guess), I went in search of something better. What was wrong with the O.S.? Not much, except its controls were almost indecipherable to set the alarm. Hoped to reproduce its great qualities and get a proper alarm clock to boot. After much comparison shopping (and reading the manuals...cuz that's what I do...) here's what I experienced with the La Crosse 616-146:Pros:Nice, large display with lots of indicators, fairly easy to figure out.Easy setupConvenient Projection modes: Time only, Time/Temp, Temp onlyPleasant surprise: USB charger for my iPodMeh:Projected numbers are small, but bright. Much smaller than the Oregon Scientific I was replacingLCD display is so bright (even on dim setting), the room is well-lit just by the clock. Really didn't want a night lightCons:Project Time Only (the reason I bought this clock - really don't care about temperature in the middle of the night) DOESN'T UPDATE TIME. Really. Had a back-and-forth with LaCrosse on this point - they confirmed: Time-only function only displays the *time when you first project it* - you have to fiddle with the thing (touch the snooze, whatever) to get the updated time on the projector.Backlight dimmer affects projected time brightness as well.Very disappointed to pay $20 more just for the function that doesn't work. I assured LaCrosse I would let the community know of their oversight in failing to publish this weird behavior should anyone else want to pay more for this function. Returned to Amazon, going back to Oregon Scientific. 2Mostly works **Updated Review**After less than 1 year of use, this clock is worthless to me. It did not update with time change and when I tried to hit the auto time button on the back, it still would not work. I then unplugged the clock and it now will not give me a correct date, time or temp indoors(out door one stopped working after about 2 months or so). I do not recommend this clock to anyone.**I bought this alarm clock because I liked the idea of it telling me what the temp was outdoors before I even got out of bed in the morning. The outdoor unit is very poor quality and only works half the time. The clock projection was another quality I was looking for, I really enjoy the projection on this clock. The time is very easy to read and I love the fact that it is an atomic clock. 1Bought as a replacement, not happy with this unit. We have had this alarm clock for a few years now. It is nothing but a source of frustration. It never keeps the right time. I am constantly fixing the time, as it seems to revert its self back to the time zone it defaults to. It is always an hour off. We bought this clock to replace a La Crosse Technology alarm clock that we had loved. I really think we may have just gotten a bad unit. I have actually just gotten used to adjusting the time in my head rather than continue to play with this thing. 1Much worse than older model This clock is starting to bug me, I had an older model that was perfect, needed another so I got this. This one is junk, the backlight changes in the middle of the night and lights up the whole room. The protection has big blocky digits that look stupid compared to the older model. The wireless sensor is constantly cutting out at a range of 10ft plus a window... It's on for 10 minutes, then it's off again. Line of sight from 10 feet stay away (plus a window) and it doesn't even work half of the time... I never had a problem with my old one. 1Great LCD alarm clock with just a few caveats This radio is exactly what I needed with a few caveats which is why I gave it four instead of five stars. The good:It's fairly small and doesn't hog your night table for real estate. The digits are big enough to see even with blurry groggy middle of the night vision. The internal and external temperature are a nice touch.Having the date right there on the display all the time is also a nice touch.Color choices to break up the display are all good choices and helps you easily focus on whatever you care about. Usually that's just the time so the big white digits again are a good choice. It's pretty easy to set up.The charging port is really handy and saves having to have a phone charger near your bed if you charge your phone when you go to bed like me.The projector is handy and a nice touch. It's bright enough to see against a white ceiling at night. You can't see the projected time during the day but why would you want to? It's just the right brightness to be able to be seen clearly without being annoying. The really good:The display can be set so it dims down really low. There is nothing more annoying than a ridiculously bright alarm clock at night. Even with the clock facing you it's not bothersome like some backlit LCD clocks. By far this is THE BEST implementation I've ever seen.Time signal sync is nice - no more setting the time, although there is a caveat (see below). The bad:It would be nice to have an aux port or bluetooth with an amplified speaker. I usually listen to my phone at night instead of the radio or something else so a beefier speaker than my phone's built-in speaker would have been nice. I would have even paid extra for that but I couldn't find one that had that, that wasn't beyond what I was willing to spend and the clock part was more important to me.The controls make no sense while it's trying to sync to the time signal. It would have been better to just lock out everything entirely. This caused much confusion until I realized nothing worked right until it was done syncing. The instructions elude to this but the first time I tried it the sync took so long I thought something was wrong. When I started pressing buttons nothing worked like it should. You have to wait for the time sync icon to stop flashing first. The time signal sync is a bit flaky. When I first received the clock I tried it in the living room and it wouldn't sync. I tried it in the kitchen. Same thing. It works in my bedroom that is all that really matters but I'm guessing I just got lucky. Some sort of auxiliary antenna for those getting a weak signal would have been a nice touch. The display doesn't have a very wide viewing angle. At sharper angles the display just looks like random segments. 4Ammended Review, Lost project function after 5 months. Disappointing. I am a little disappointed. It replaced a similar 10 year old LaCrosse projector clock that worked perfectly up to the end. The good: It syncs with Fort Collins, the projector is clear and bright and the price is right. The bad: Unless you are looking at display straight on it is impossible to read. If you put it on a surface 2' above your bed it can't be read without raising your head. Another issue, the display screen and the projector shut down when it is syncing with Ft Collins. Fortunately this happens only at night so it is generally not an issue. One more issue: One time when it restarted from sync'ing the orientation of the projector had to be reset. It flipped 180 degrees so you were looking at the time and temperature on the ceiling upside down. It is easy to reset but not at night in the dark. If this happens frequently it will be returned. I can't believe it was intended to reset that way.Amended Review: The unit stopped projection after 5 months. Not real happy. I will send it back to La Crosse and see if they fix the issue. It is a hassle. It's ok when it works, it has had some glitches (resets) along the way, and now it lost the projection function. I can't recommend this product. 1
