Customer Reviews

Not worth the time to order let alone the money. Not good. Didn t receive an instructions kit like some has said they did, maybe mine was used but it came just in bubble wrap packaging. Tried washing it off, putting it in deeper, etc what everyone on here is giving suggestions for but it just plain doesn t work as it should. Full glass of water fully submerged still reads dry. Some plants give a reading of 4 maximum right upon watering, I don t know what it would take to be above a 6 if a glass of water or my bamboo that sits alone only in water doesn t do it.It s inconsistent among plants I ve just watered to cactus I haven t watered in a month. I guess it s cheap and if you adjust your view to 4 being super wet and negative being dry maybe it ll work. Not for me. Will be ordering a new one from another company. 1Effective Digital Moisture Meter for Houseplants I was a plant killer before this device came along. My plants died from too much and too little water. Plant experts tell us to put our fingers one inch below the soil to determine whether we needed to water the plant. The problem is, "moist enough" mean different things to different people. And what is "moist enough" for some plants is too wet for others. This digital moisture meter is an indispensable tool for the inexperienced plant keeper as well for those who have trouble with the subjectivity involved in judging the moisture content of their potting soil. It takes away the subjectivity and the need for judgment. The product came with a long list of the many common houseplants and their water needs. The water needs of the plants are given on a scale starting from one. The higher the number, the higher the water requirements of the plant. For example, Anthurium has a been given a number 8 on the scale. This means you must keep the soil moist at all times for your Anthurium. The plant list also gives suggestions on how often to check the soil moisture for each plant. Every three days for some plants while others are less frequent. The meter and the chart together make a powerful combination that will help you keep your plants alive.A very skilled horticulturists may not need a digital moisture meter but most of us who have killed houseplants before and could not figure why, this is an indispensable tool. Do your plants a favor and get this moisture meter. Your plants will thank you for it if they could only talk. As a matter of fact, if your plants could talk, they would beg you to get a digital moisture meter. The device is easy to use. Insert the metal probe deep into the soil. At least halfway. Probe different areas of the pot until you get used to it. Do not be surprised if different probing locations give different readings. The deeper you probe the higher the readings. Water follows gravity after all and it is logical that the soil at the bottom will have more moisture. Keep the probe clean between plants to get accurate measurements. Clean the probe after each use. You can use a kitchen paper towel or a small face towel to wipe the metal probe clean. Water the plant only if the readings you get are below the number given for the specific plant. To use Anthurium as an example, water only if the reading you got is below the required moisture level of 8. If the probe reads 8 or above, do not water. Water the plant thoroughly but do not leave the runoff at the bottom catch tray. Throw away the excess water that collected at the bottom tray. This is an excellent product that can save you a lot of grief. Highly recommended. 5Did not work brand new Right out of the package it never registered any moisture. I tried it per instructions in numerous pots that did not need watering where it should have registered moisture. Never got it to work.I am returning it to Amazon. Also, if it had worked the probe is very short - would have only been usable on small pots. The $8 ones shown in the searches here have much longer probes and I have always had good luck with them. Thought this one would be higher quality and thought the "cord" feature would have been nice. 1It works great, you have to learn to do it correctly! I'm very please with it after figuring it out, it works great - if others are having trouble, I hope they take the time to experiment a little to see if they're doing something wrong. The display is large, easy to hold and read, and you can use it on hanging baskets. or low pots, with ease. After having one of the fixed probe models, i was really frustrated trying to read their small displays at odd angles, i had been wishing for something like this for a long time. I read the reviews carefully and was hoping that I would get one that didn't have the same issues as others were describing, plus i've learned that some reviews just aren't even reading the instructions that come with products! The first couple of tries after opening the packaging, I was having the exact problems others described: never left "dry" mark, dipped it in water and it still said "dry". I was really disappointed and cleaned the probe off well, planing on returning it. Then, I read the instructions. When i stuck the probe all the way in (past 3") I started getting accurate readings! I'm wondering if cleaning the probe well also didn't hurt, but now it seems to work perfectly. I've used it a couple of weeks with accurate readings every time. The probe is a little "fatter" than my fixed probe and requires more force to get into the soil. I'm wondering if other users are not getting past the top layer of dry soil (like I was originally). Plus, when i put the probe deeper into a glass of water it does indeed read "wet". 5Simple and effective Read the reviews where people describe how to best use this. I followed their instructions and it works fine. It's not a fancy piece of equipment, but it works fine. It saved my fern, which was in a "self-watering pot" that wasn't working, and when I used the meter it said it was completely dry. Another day or two of relying on the pot to water the plant and it probably would have died. Now I test it every day to see how much more water it needs, since a malfunctioning self-watering pot is just a stupid pot with no drainage. The meter is light-weight and seems a little flimsy, and I can't vouch for the complete accuracy or reliability, but I think for deciding whether to add more water to a plant (and approx. how much), it works well and is a good price. If I test the soil, add a little water, and retest, the meter goes up a little; if I repeat, it goes up a little more. Sensitive enough for my needs.Side note about self-watering pots for anyone who is interested: The kind with the inner unfinished terra cotta pot that is supposed to let water slowly soak through to the soil- test it before planting in it by placing the dry inner pot into the outer pot full of water and place a dry paper towel in the inner pot. If the paper towel isn't wet within an hour, the inner pot isn't letting the moisture through. I guess at this point you can try soaking it in vinegar for a couple days to remove any deposits that are blocking the water, then soak in distilled water to get the vinegar out. Or you can just return the stupid thing. 5Cautionary Tale. If this product were simply worthless, I probably would not bother to write a negative review. However, I relied on it to monitor moisture at the root zone of 10" tubes and added water accordingly. Without belaboring the point, I lost a year in propagating dormant grape cuttings: I added water according to the meter but, as I learned, the root zone was essentially soggy. When I tested the meter by wrapping it with layers of moist paper towel, it read "dry." Mine could have been a fluke, but I certainly would not recommend it. The consequential damages are too great, in my case, rare cuttings not in the trade and thus not easily replaceable. 1Great little tool, with one big drawback - MISSING BASIC HERBS?!? & a fix. So I have a black thumb. Usually I don't care, but I do like fresh herbs in my food, particularly basil. Now that it's winter, grocery stores scarcely stock fresh herbs, so I've resorted to (trying to) growing my own. So far, I'm doing a terrible job.I bought this soil moisture meter to help me figure out why my basil plant was touch and go and seemingly really high maintenance. As soon as the meter came in the mail, I popped the package open and started reading. "Includes watering needs for over 150 plants!" Guess what? Not one of them is basil...or any herb, really. No parsley, oregano, etc.Frustrated, I took to the internet and found this pdf from Luster Leaf that had some additional plants and their watering needs listed. I've included them below. Note, below is not the entire list, just a smaller list of plants that seem to be left off the official Luster Leaf instructions included with the plant meter.Hint: 1st number is the "water number" (how wet it should be. Most plants here are between 2-5); 2nd number is how many days before you should check it again (most plants are ever 1-3 days); and the last number(s) are additional comments specific to that plant. Spray foliage daily2. Never let soil dry out3. Keep soil moist but never soggy4. Keep soil wet at all times5. Allow soil to dry between watering.6. Soil should remain dry 4 5 days7. Reduce watering during dormant period.8. Water from beneath (in saucer.) Never wet foliage.9. Water more and more frequently when temperatures are hot.10. Water thoroughly. So, basil's water # shouldn't be higher than a 4, it should be checked daily, And the comments are to never let the soil dry out, keep it moist but not soggy. Guess how my basil was doing???? Yeah, it's bad.Hope this helps someone else! 4READ REVIEWS BEFORE BUYING It works great in potted plants, I suspect due to higher density soil from years of compaction / root growth, salt build up. In fluffy dry garden soil, nothing. Read top review for instructions on use. THERE ARE NO INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE IN PACKAGING. While I probably would have kept experimenting with conductivity in different soils / moistures, the top review saved me days of effort and quite frankly there is no excuse for manufacturer to not include these directions with the product. So, it works, but, minus two stars for horrible documentation by manufacturer. 3Very Good Product Product arrived days sooner than expected!!!!!! Works well if you follow the testing instructions. Meter is especially effective if you do container gardening. All my gardening is done in containers on an urban condo balcony in zone 10b (Los Angeles). Each plant has different moisture requirements.I was extremely surprised at how much I was OVER watering until I tested the soil. Because there is a separate meter from the probe, it is easy to view the moisture reading. I recommend this product. 4No batteries required I used to have a similar moisture gauge for many years. Misplaced it in our last move. When I saw this product I didn t hesitate to order it. The many plants I own require various watering schedules and amounts. This gauge makes it all very easy. 5
