Customer Reviews

Excellent quality utensil! I'm a little obsessive about my kitchen equipment! Mercer Culinary make excellent quality utensils. I love both the look and feel of this fish turner. I have an odd mix of cookware, which leads to an odd mix of cooking utensils. This stainless steel spatula works well on both my cast iron skillet and my stainless steel cookware. It works wonderfully for flipping delicate items like fish, but we've grabbed it a few times for stir-fry and hash browns! I wouldn't use it to flip a weighty steak, but it's definitely a multi-use tool. The only problem we have is that there are no washing instructions. We're assuming hand wash to protect the beautiful rosewood handle. 4Great for fish and other food items Although this is categorized as a fish turner, I'm using it as an all-around grilling/cooking spatula and I really like it. The metal is flexible enough to provide more control than you get from a typical spatula when disengaging meat from a grill or from a pan. (I have used inexpensive grill turners before and they are normally so stiff and thick that it's easy to leave a quarter of your meat behind with each turn.)I also like the length of the metal segment. It gives you more nuance when flipping things and getting under things, whether those things be meat, large vegetables, flapjacks or whatever.Overall, this solidly constructed turner provides more control when cooking than does the average spatula/turner. It was designed to deal with fish, which can be pretty flaky and delicate, and that design works great for other food applications, too. 5It's OK, but a slight improvement in its design would bring it to a whole new level. Ok, this is going to sound very strange, but I love a good fish spatula/turner. I am 54, and when I got my first place I bought a box of utensils at an estate auction. My mother picked through the box when I got home and after throwing out half the stuff because it was either old, rusted, broken or covered in lead paint, what came out of the box were five useful things including a black plastic handled Ekco fish spatula. "This," said my mother "is going to become your best tool in the kitchen." And she was right.A good fish spatula - EVEN IF YOU DON'T COOK FISH - is invaluable. They stir, they blend, they flip, they whisk. They combine the versatility of six or seven functions in cooking to one tool. But to be this flexible, the fish spatula proper has to flex and be bend just a little. A stiff as a board fish spatula is useless - its that spring of the metal that gives it a big part of the versatility. But the other things that give versatility is the shape of the grip, and the materials used. I still have that same Ekco turner after 33 years, and I would be lost without it.This fish spatula is very nice, but its not going to replace this ancient one that I use, and here's why:1) The metal on this /is/ nice and has a good spring. Yet it still gives you a level control to left and flip. The crook (the permanent bend) is in the right place. So its a good spatula.2) But the shape of the spatula is square on its shorter edge. If it had a bit of rounding to it, then this where you get the ability to stir and whisk. This one is close, and better than some. But the shape doesn't make it a flexible (as in multi tasking) tool. And why is that curve important? Because between the pan wall, and the bottom of any pan is a curve, not a right angle, that's why.3) The rosewood handle is a dish design element. But over time this is not going to do well in a dish washer. Look, lets be honest. If you cook a lot, you want things that are dishwasher safe. For this product, the wood is a really nice touch, but it a hand wash utensil. I know that plastic isn't glamourous, and it isn't what TV chefs use, but they have people to clean up their messes. Non of us do. If we cook, we clean, and that's where the dishwasher comes in. It may tolerate a couple dishwasher washings, but over the long haul, it won't hold up.So my rating, three stars, means what Amazon says it should "It's OK" for me. Serviceable, but not great. You, might be different. But me, and I know fish spatulas, not so great. Now, if they adjust the design to give it a slight curve and a rounded edge, then they'll be cooking with gas, as my mother used to say. 3Excellent utensil for fish-lovers We eat lots of fish in our household: salmon, tilapia, grouper, you name it. This fish turner is a real boon beautifully constructed, nicely designed, and lightweight. It has a stunning rosewood handle that s comfortable to maneuver, and it s a perfect size to efficiently turn over fish filets. And, I don t feel as if I m at risk of scratching my cast-iron frying pan.I m not confining it exclusively to fish turning. This morning, I used it on a veggie egg omelette, and it was far better than the plastic and other metal spatulas I ve tried in the past. All things considered, this is really a fine turner nothing to criticize. The price is a tad bit high, but not out of sight, especially since it seems built to last. 5This is an awesome fish spatula This is an awesome fish spatula. It is very solid, and have a beveled edge so you can easily get under food. This spatula is amazing for pancakes. The handle is very comfortable and you can really tell this a well made utensil. Although this spatula is very sturdy, it is still very light. It's easy to clean, I wouldn't put it in the dishwasher. 5Well built, but the blade is too thick to get under food very easily Mercer Culinary M18483 Praxis Rosewood Handle Fish Turner, 6" x 3", BrownI own three fish turners and they are across the map as far as price and quality go. There are four things to consider when looking at these turners: (i) price, (ii) build and material quality, (iii) function, and (iv) care maintenance required.Price: I have a Winco fish turner that cost about 1/5 the price of the Mercer, and a KitchenAid that costs just under half. Winner: Winco.Build Quality: They are all stainless. The blades of the Winco and the KA are thinner than that of the Mercer. The Winco and Mercer each have wooden handles, and the KA has a hollow plastic one. The Winco has a half tang with rivets, the Mercer, a full tang with rivets. The Mercer handle is also beefier than the Winco, and about the same as the KA but made of wood instead of plastic. Winner: Mercer.Function: All three have tapered edges that are supposed to allow the blade to get between food and the cooking surface. The thinner blades of the Winco and KA accomplish that noticeably better than the Mercer. All three are sufficiently sturdy to get under and lift a wide variety of foods and none has been weak enough to collapse under the weight of ordinary food items. Winner: tie between Winco and KA.Care and maintenance: all three have stainless blades. I put the Winco into the dishwasher and its wooden handle didn t like that. The finish was ruined, the grain was raised and it has never been the same. The KA allows dishwasher water to enter the hollow plastic handle which then drips out during use or you can shake it really well to get the water out. The Mercer has a very nice, beefy wooden handle, so to avoid the Winco s fate, I hand wash it. In sum, none of these turners belongs in the dishwasher. Winner: three-way tie.Overall, although the build of the Mercer is more sturdy and beefy, it is not worth the asking price in my view. It just doesn t work as well to get under food that wants to adhere to a pan. For function, price, and overall value, I d go with the Winco. 2Super Spatula! This is perhaps the most used utensil in my kitchen, but don't let the Fish Turner name fool you, it does sooo much more. Yes, it does the perfect job when you want to turn over that piece of fish that you have grilling in your pan, but you'll find so many other jobs that this does better than your standard spatula.I use this when frying foods in my cast-iron frying pans, it helps when turning the beautiful browned hash browns, so they don't fall apart. This "fish turner" has the length for flipping over those pancakes and also does a perfect job on my omelettes as well.I have two of these beautiful utensils, I use this one on my cast-iron pans and I have a silicone one for my non-stick pans and I can't live without them. They are the most useful tools I have in my kitchen and this Mercer Culinary Fish Turner with the Rosewood handle is just great. You'll find many jobs for it in your kitchen and you'll wonder how you ever managed cooking before without it. 5A Quality Turner! I love my well made kitchen utensils and gadgets like a mechanic loves his shop tools, although I confess, I'm a bit of a tool junkie too. I appreciate the design and engineering in their ability to meet my personal needs and expectations. This is a quality turner that exceeds my expectations.I noticed before ordering that the stainless steel continues through the handle, like the tang of a knife, and is riveted to the rosewood with three brass rivets. This means that it is more well balanced, stronger, and that it won't break off like some when lifting a hefty piece of food. Now that I have used it, I can say that it feels good in my hand and that the spatula end is nicely flexible. The end is beveled too, and slides under foods even more easily so that they aren't broken. It's near perfection!Although this is designed to use with delicate foods like fish, there is no reason that it can't fill other kitchen needs. The angle, thinness, and flexibility of the stainless steel strike me as a potential pie server, one that will get that difficult piece of pie out of it's pan. It's apple season and my hubby's been asking for a pie. Product testing! There were no care instructions on the card that this came on. I would encourage hand washing to maintain it's quality. It may tolerate trips through the dishwasher but it would eventually take it's toll on the rosewood handle. It cleans up quite easily with soap and water, and an abrasive pad, if needed, will take stuck food off.I have a composite spatula similar to this that I use with my nonstick skillets. It is very handy, but it, like the skillets, has temperature limitations. This one does not, so is better suited for browning and frying meats and fish, or anything that you need high heat with.I love it! I will update my review if I have problems or additional info to add. 5Works great. Mercer makes the best kitchen equipment. 5Great quality fish spatula. Comparison to the Winco version. This is a very well made fish spatula (I got the 6x3" version). The metal part is a bit thicker than the Winco brand, yet still flexible enough for its intended use. It is also about the same size as the Winco, though the handle is a bit larger/thicker.While the Mercer has more weight and feels more sturdy than the Winco, both version work fine and do the job. The Winco less than 1/3 of the price though. 5
