Customer Reviews

Sturdy, well-made product You gotta hand it to the Brits. Their cleverness and practically really shines through in this deceptively simple device. This is no flimsy, plastic, el-cheapo, mass-produced, made-in-China POS, with a jacked-up price that works for a maybe week then ends up in the landfill. This is heavy and sturdy out of the box, made for years of use, with all included hardware and a strong metal mounting bracket with pin rods that allow the unit to be easily stored during inclement weather. The coated lines are hefty and retractable. I installed it in under ten minutes and am looking forward to drying my laundry in the fresh air, something I ve not done since childhood. A great, back-to-basics product! Highly recommended! 5The honeymoon is over UPDATE 09/18/2015 When I first purchased this clothesline I was thrilled. But a few months into the relationship and the honeymoon is over. The problem is that the blasted peg/knob things on the bottom of the unit are not durable. And those peg/knob things are essential, because that is the key to keeping the lines taut. Both of mine have broken so I've done more than my fair share of cussing trying to finagle a way to prevent the lines from sagging. I still think this is a great design, the lines are long, retract easily, and there is plenty of line to hang multiple loads; unfortunately, the material is simply not durable. Deducting one star for each broken peg.I've never had an outdoor clothesline, having always relied upon an electric dryer. But, in an effort to reduce our use of electricity (and, yes, save some money), I began looking at clotheslines. My husband was very much opposed to putting a permanent structure up, which I couldn't argue with. We looked at various clotheslines, including single string lines, as well as fold-down racks that mount to the wall, and those too, were either impractical (a single line won't be able to accommodate the volume of laundry we have) or unattractive. We wanted something that would provide quite a bit of space, but we wouldn't have to be walking to some remote area of the yard, because 1) we probably would be too lazy to utilize it, or 2) we'd forget to bring the laundry back in. This was the unit we settled on, for two reasons: 1) it has two separate lines which each provide miles of line (ok, 49 feet per line, but it feels like a lot!), and 2) though unsightly, it could be taken down easily when not in use. We've had this for about six weeks, and I have used it countless times since then, as have my husband and kids. It really works as promised. My husband mounted the base plate, which holds the unit, on the wall, and then put the two anchor/hook pieces to which the lines attach, in opposite areas. I think this is one of the best features of this unit. One line goes one direction, and the other line goes a completely different direction. We did this deliberately to utilize as much area under our covered patio, so the sun wouldn't fade the laundry (we are in the Phoenix area, therefore the sun is very intense), while also avoiding obstacles like the patio table, etc. The base plate and hooks are virtually unnoticeable when you are not using the dryer (meaning, I've taken the main unit down), which is wonderful. The lines themselves are easy to pull out and retract without any problem. The two little knobs on the bottom of the unit are used to keep the line taut. They are very easy to use and work perfectly. We placed the base plate and hooks high enough that we're able to hang our California King sized sheets without them touching the ground. I have found in the dry heat, the laundry - including jean shorts, socks, towels and thicker items - dry much, much faster than in the dryer. This was a really pleasant surprise. When it's a bit more humid (it is monsoon season here in Phoenix, after all), the clothes take about as long as the dryer would, maybe a bit longer. But for the vast majority of loads I have done, the laundry is dry before the washer has even completed its cycle for a second load. When I'm finished with the unit, it takes literally one minute to retract the lines and take the unit off the wall - which I prefer to do so it stays clean (and, as I mentioned, it's not the prettiest thing in the world). I wish I had done this years ago. I would highly recommend this retractable clothesline. 3Best on the Market! This is the 3rd clothesline I have purchased and it rules. Really sturdy and the line is some strong plastic so it won't get wet. I use for dye projects so I can wipe it off afterwards and the string won't mold. Attached with 4 screws in the back so it is very sturdy and double the line means double the drying space. Seriously a solid helpful thing 5Disappointing design flaw The tabs underneath (which secure the clothes line) have both cracked and have broken off. Shortly after purchasing these, the tabs started to crack and parts broke off. After 18 months of use, the tabs have broken off so badly that the entire mechanism is no longer useful. This is clearly as design flaw in what should be (could be) a very useful device.I cannot recommend it until this flaw is repairedFollow-up: I came up with a solution to repair it. My wife says it works better than the original. I used two washers (1/1/4" and 1" dia.), two screws and some epoxy. Works quite well and should last. Pictures attached. 2So far so good. After one use. I set it up over a 23 ft span. I didn't reef on it, but I thought I had pulled it pretty tight before winding the cord around the bottom 'cleats' on the unit. I don't know how hard I can really pull it, or how much the 'cleats' can withstand. Hung the towels (see pic), and with the wet towel weight, there was about a 1 foot droop in the line. But the towels dried fine, sun and some gusty wind: the line never went lower than the 1st droop with hanging the towels. Line dried towels are the BEST: they're stiff and rough and really absorbent after a shower, your skin is dry the instant it's touched by a line-dry towel :) The instructions said to put the receiving hooks so the line is level, but I think I'll raise those hooks up about a foot. I waited until the next day to retract the lines: they don't go ZZIIPPPP, you have to hold the ends then walk the lines back as they retract which is fine. 4 stars because I don't yet know how well this will hold up over the season(s) 4This is so great. Super easy to set up This is so great. Super easy to set up. I just connect the cables to the first tree, pull the unit over to the next, put the pins in to secure it and then wrap the cable on itself to lock it from reeling out. Then I just do the reverse and bring it inside to keep it in good condition. I saved a bunch of money last summer hanging my clothes outside. I strung it almost the entire length (about 48ft for me). The max extended length is deceiving, it's about 49ft x 2 cables and that's how they claim the 98ft. But you wouldn't want to go much longer anyway because that's a lot of load on these cables. They are plenty durable, but I still try to hang heavy weat clothes on the ends first (like jeans and sweaters) and put light stuff towards the middle (like socks and under garments) if I make it that far. The 2 strings are somewhat close together, but I still use both and it works out just fine. 5Great solution to drying outdoors without installing a permanent pole I love this clothesline. It solved the problem of wanting a clothesline but needing a pick axe to install a permanent pole in our rocky soil. We mounted it on one of the columns on our back porch. I can pull it out to the next column for drying bathing suits and towels or pull it out into the yard and attach it to a hook on a tree for large loads like sheets. Takes a little knack to get it taut but once you figure that out, you're good to go. This was supposed to be a temporary fix until we could get a pole into the ground but I like it so much I've decided just to use this. Retracts easily and fully without any effort and guests don't notice it on the porch column when not in use.Had It for 8 months now. 5Good once modified Good retractable clothes line. After reading the reviews and seeing mine in person, I can definitely say the bottom plastic tabs used to secure the lines are too flimsy to be used for long.To solve this, add two stainless steel (or galvanized if you can find it) rope cleats next to the reel and you will be able to secure the lines very very well and this will also mitigate the risk of breaking the bottoms tabs.(Link to 4inch rope cleats used: Crown Sporting Goods Stainless Steel Dock Cleat, Boat Mooring Accessories & Marine Hardware (4) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073V6RWG1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_TX5RCbVTE8B8B)With this modification, this retractable line is 5/5.Without, it would be 3/5. 4Great clothes line This clothes line was easy to set up! The lines are plenty long enough for me to hang 3 full loads of laundry. The only problem I have is it is a little difficult to get the lines tight enough so the clothes don't weigh them down so much. I would definitely recommend it if your electric bill is as ridiculously high as ours. 4Low Quality Very disappointing product. Have used this clothes line 15 times since we purchased it. We always used clothesline prop rods with it due to the length of the clothes line. The tabs underneath have both cracked and broke under very light use. This has resulted in making the product unusable without having to jury-rig hooks or cleats or something else. The cracks on the tabs were along a seem. It seems to me this is a design flaw. I have included a pic. I do not recommend this product. 1
