Customer Reviews

Here s the Fix for the Leaking Problem the leaking issue is both user error and Design Flaw. Remove the unit that holds the coffee grinds, Remove the carafe, gently move the plastic rod that the carafe pushes when u place it on the machine, look inside the opening where the coffee loader goes, You will see a nipple moving, it s attached to the rod you re pushing. That nipple is what sends the brewed coffee into the carafe. If you over load the loader with grinds, the grinds spill out and clogg that pathway leaving the nipple in the open position.Using the water filter pad helps prevent the grinds from splashing. It also filters out some water impurities. i purchased a pack of 20 and change the pad every month. The user error is overloading the loader if you like strong coffee.. The design flaw is that some more sophisticated brewers have a screen in that area to prevent the nipple from clogging. If you ve never experienced a leaking issue it s still a good idea to clean this area every month depending on frequency of use.Of Course! UN PLUG THE MACHINE BEFORE RUNNING UNDER WATER TO CLEAN IT .It s a great coffee maker and with proper maintenance will last many years. 5Very weak coffee, fixed by removing the water filter pad. Otherwise good product. Mr. Coffee provided great warranty support. My first three pots were very weak, and I was getting ready to return this. Then read some comments which noted the same problem, and one suggested removing the water filter pad (the Mr. Coffee water filtration system) which sits over the ground coffee basket. Did so and now it works just fine. I am having a had time understanding why this should make a difference. However, my tap water is fine and I would not spend the money to replace that filter on a monthly basis as the manufacturer recommends, so I can live with this. But, when I called the manufacturer for help resolving the problem they did not offer any solutions. Lucky I came across this on my own.Update: discovered that the weak coffee was because the filter pad was not sufficiently permeable, so the water flowed over it and down the sides of the basket. Mr. Coffee sent me a replacement filter and it was a much darker color than the one shipped with the coffee maker, and it works fine. I suspect that soaking the filter pad before first use would improve performance.UPDATE December 2017: the LED display became dimmer over time, to the point where it was barely legible even with the kitchen lights turned off. Called support and was advised to unplug it for a few minutes, and also to press and hold brew button; neither resulted in fix. At this point, I was a few days outside of the 1 year warranty, yet Mr. Coffee a/k/a Jarden replaced the entire unit. Kudos to them for great support.I see that others have encountered the same problem with the display. Product makes great coffee and carafe is excellent design (durable, heat retention, pours well), but is of little use at home without a functional timer. Took the old one to the office, where a timer isn't necessary. So, I still recommend this product, but if you purchase one keep an eye on the LED display, and seek warranty support if you happen to have a dud. 4Do not buy this machine. Flawed design Oh how I wish I'd returned this coffee pot within the warranty period. I have never had a product with a more flawed design. First of all, there is a piece in the basket that comes apart when the wind blows too strongly - or literally anything brushes up against it. If anyone other than me unknowingly washes the basket and doesn't avoid this area, it comes off and twice has been lost. And guess what, they don't sell a replacement. I've had to replace the ENTIRE basket twice. The fact that the company doesn't make just this small piece available is a complete scam. Next up, the light on the clock dimmed out within about 18months - so now I can't use (see) the time/timer etc. And finally, the carafe very easily pops out of place and at least a dozen times, including yesterday, I've had coffee brew all over my countertops, drawers, and floor. This is a terrible product and unless they've fixed these problems it should not be on the market. 1Thermos didn't last over 2 months. VERY disappointed!! I've had this coffee maker a few months. At first the thermos worked to keep the coffee a good temperature for over 3 hours. Now the coffee is luke warm in about 60 minutes. I have never placed the thermos in the dishwasher or abused it in any way and I've always cleaned the pot as directed. I am not sure how the thermos diminished. It sucks, now cups from last half of the pot always go in the microwave. If you put THERMAL as your selling point, you ought to make sure that feature last more than 2 months.Update ON 9-23-18: Now I've had 2 of these pots because the seller replaced the first one. THE THERMAL FEATURE DOES NOT LAST AND ON BOTH PRODUCTS THE DISPLAY LIGHT FADED SO MUCH YOU CAN'T READ IT. SO IF YOU WANT THERMAL AND THE ABILITY TO SET AUTO ON; THEN YOU WILL ULTIMATELY BE DISAPPOINTED. 1Great Coffee Machine! >>> SUMMARY <<>> MACHINE DESCRIPTION <<>> USING THE MACHINE <<>> PERFORMANCE DATA << Brew TemperatureA full pot of coffee measures about 177F just after completing the brewing process, and drops about 5.4F/hr. This means after seven hours the coffee in the carafe is still at 139F, still an acceptable temperature for my coffee (I realize this is not necessarily good enough for everyone, but it s perfectly fine for me!). And because there is no hot plate (just a well insulated thermal carafe), the coffee tastes just as good seven hours later (no burned coffee!).> Brew TimeThe first drop falls at about 30s, the last drop falls at about 7m. If you re extremely impatient or addicted, the first 10oz is done in about 100s and the brew pause feature allows you to pour off your fix without spilling much more than a drop.> Pour TimeThe thermal carafe design is great for keeping coffee warm without requiring additional energy input and without burning your coffee, but there is a trade-off: a restriction on the pour spout. It s not the end of the world, but it reduces flow rate, meaning you must be patient when pouring. The pot empties at about 1.25oz/s, so the whole pot will be empty in about a minute. But for those of you who are eager to get your first 10oz of the day, waiting 12 seconds to get from the carafe to your cup can feel like an eternity. Take a deep breath; relax. It s OK.> Costs OverviewTrying to account for every piece of the puzzle, I came in at just under $1/pot. Pretty good! So coffee from this machine will cost about $0.021/oz; compare this to a 20oz Starbucks coffee ($2.35, or $0.117/oz). If you use this machine to replace only one cup of Starbucks coffee per week, it will pay for itself after one year ($0.99/pot/week * 52 weeks + $71/machine = $122 = $2.35/ Starbucks 20oz * 52 weeks). If you use it to replace one cup of Starbucks per weekday, it will pay for itself in about 11 weeks and you ll save $284 in the first year. If you and a friend are each using a full pot (46oz) to replace two every-weekday Starbucks coffees, you ll save over $500 in the first year.> Cost DetailsMy cost analysis (to come up with $0.99/pot) included coffee filters, coffee grounds, electricity, water, and the water filter discs, based on whatever I paid for these things (or to order replacements). By far the biggest expense was coffee ($0.93; I purchased 126 1.5-2oz bags of coffee perfect for a full pot from coffeeforless.com for $115, which included shipping). The coffee filters, filter discs, and electricity needed to brew a full pot (0.14kWh) are each about $0.02. I used tap water, which, on a per pot basis, is essentially free ($0.0016/pot)> SoundsI roughly characterized the sounds made by the machine using my cell phone. The percolating noises were about the same as a quiet conversation. The [4 kHz] beep to signal the end of the brew cycle is about 10-15 dB above the percolation noises. Not too loud, but if you re trying to maintain a perfectly serene household, it may bother you.>>> THINGS OTHER PEOPLE SAY <<<1. Some other reviewers suggested that they needed to use two filters or more coffee to get the right brew, but that hasn t been an issue for me. I ve been using two filters anyway, because I prefer my coffee quite strong, but I ve tried it with one filter and it produced a good cup of coffee.2. Some other reviewers have told tales of spilled coffee or clogged machines this hasn t been an issue for me (well, not often anyway; see below). Before I prep the coffee to brew, I shake the carafe and/or open, empty, and rinse the carafe to be sure it is empty.3. Some other reviewers have mentioned a harsh and thick plastic smell that it took a long time to subdue. I agree that there was a plastic smell, and I took care to brew full pots of water, vinegar, water, coffee, water through the machine (in my garage) before bringing it into my house and using it for the first pot. But I think that might have been overkill. Some people will probably not notice any plastic flavor on their first pot, and some people will probably complain of plastic flavor incessantly; for me it has only produced delicious coffee.>>> FEATURE WISH-LIST <<<1. I wish I could turn off the beeps at brew completion and two hours after brew completion. They re not very loud, but I find them unnecessary and would rather do without them.2. A pot fullness indicator. I understand the desire to keep the stainless carafe well sealed introducing a window into the side of the carafe would greatly compromise carafe mechanical integrity, ability to retain heat, and aesthetic. But perhaps this feature could be implemented in another way to at least provide some indication of what s in the pot without having to pick it up, shake it, take off the top and look inside, etc. (maybe a force sensor underneath that compares the weight of the carafe vs that of an empty carafe, and uses the difference to calculate the amount of fluid in the carafe and display that on a digital meter on the side of the machine?).3. An automatic shut-off with a full pot! I read about a few mishaps others had, and lied to myself that I would never have the problem of leaving something in the pot and accidentally overfilling it. But one day I forgot to check the pot to make sure it was empty before starting a brew. And it overflowed. And it was 100% my fault. But it sure would be nice if the pot could somehow sense that the pot was nearing over-flow, and automatically stop/pause the brew. Perhaps a good feature to combine with the pot fullness indicator discussed above? 5Good Quality I am a huge fan of coffee. Back in the day I would spend hundreds of dollars at local coffee houses (not starbucks tho lol), but then I went overseas and experienced their coffee's and brew techniques, and switch to doing it myself. Long story short, my high quality coffee station broke and I needed a replacement. I wasn't going to spend so much money on it, or at least not for now since it's a temporary solution, or so I thought.I received this product after only 1 day, this was much faster than advertised. I unpacked the coffee maker and was first very impressed. There was no chemical or plastic smell as others have reported, or you're used to when unpacking some cheap brand coffee makers. But then and this is why I give it only 3 stars, I got to the actual thermal carafe and while it's stainless steel, the upper part were the lid meets the steels is plastic, and in my case this plastic did have a huge white stain all around it. It kinda looked like somebody poured some glue or white paint over it, and it ran all over the connection. I tried cleaning it with warm soapy water, even with white vinegar, and while the stain faded it's still clearly visible. At the price this coffee maker is offered, I shouldn't have to deal with that, or this shouldn't even be an issue to begin with.If I didn't needed a coffee maker that badly the day I got it, I probably would have returned it, or ask the seller to replace it. But I don't have time to go to their website and get in touch with them, or having to wait some weeks before getting a replacement. So this was very aggravating to be quite honest and probably the reason I can't give it a 5 star rating.Back to the coffee maker itself tho, I didn't experienced as others have reported any leakage. But you do have to empty the thermal before using it another time, even if you plan on brewing less cups, or it will spill. Sometimes it's difficult to remember such thing, especially in the morning, since this coffee maker doesn't have like other machines an indicator on the carafe or machine itself. But you will get the hang of it after a while :)I use mine with filtered water only, therefore I can't comment on the actual water filter that's installed with the machine. But I do love how quick it is, and how quiet it is. I do live in an apartment building and work at nights. I make lots of coffee at 2 or 3 am, and this machine in comparison to other ones, do not disturb my neighbors, and trust me our walls are paper thin. One thing I would like to change is that annoying beep from the machine itself, after the coffee has finished brewing, it will beep 3 times. But it isn't just a beep, it's very loud and this could be a problem if you have people sleeping in your house etc.I love the cleaning function, and while it's a full 45 minute cycle, it does all the work for you. Just fill it with water and vinegar solution or any store bought coffee maker cleaner and you're good to go. Unless as others have reported you hit the button on accident, which I can't really see happening since the button is not even slightest close to the actual start button, you will have nothing to worry about. But even if you do that, you can just plug the coffee maker out and wait 5 minutes, after you plug it back in, it has reset to it's default settings. You wouldn't have to wait 45 minutes and run through the whole program that way.It does keep the coffee very hot, even longer than advertised (2 hours I believe is the manufacturer's take on that, at least in the manual) but I find myself having fresh tasting coffee, that's extremely hot even after 7+ hours. However to be able to archive that, you will have to do some preparations. I mostly boil some water in my water cooker, and then put it into the thermal, close the lid and let it stand for 5 - 10 minutes. Open the lid after, remove the hot water, close the lid and then place it under the coffee maker and press the start button. This will heat the thermal carafe from the inside and keeps everything very hot. If you don't want to go through this hassle, I tested it just for the review, running warm/hot water from your sink through it will at least keep it 4+ hours hot and fresh tasting. But even without doing any of that, you still get a good 3+ hours give or take out of it.After all I am very pleased with the coffee maker and would recommend it, however I am still salty about the weird stain, that makes the whole thermal less appealing when placed on the coffee table. 3Poorly designed and causes spills Returning the coffee makerBiggest issue is that coffee does not flow correctly from the machine to the carafe. The design is due to bad engineering and has caused numerous major spills across the kitchen (picture attached). I think another review commented that this was because the carafe was not emptied. That was certainly not true in my case. The issue in my case is that a small amount of coffee grounds can cause the system to block - and there is nothing to stop the coffee from flowing if there is a block.A related point is that the machine does a poor job of addressing coffee grounds. The filter system itself easily gets filled up (again, poor engineering/design). This then puts grounds throughout the system into your coffee.Do not buy this.Daniel 1EXCELLENT PURCHASE - BEST UPGRADE FROM OUR KEURIG After spending many weeks researching and reviewing options to trade in our Keurig for a regular drip coffee maker we decided to give this one a try. I read many reviews that had negative remarks about leaking, and other brew problems. Originally those reviews steered me away but on a whim I decided to try it anyways. I AM SO GLAD WE DID. The only issue we had (which will be with any new coffee maker) is that our first few brews had a plastic-y taste. After about 7 or 8 brew cycles of vinegar the taste was gone! We use this coffee maker religiously every morning and for many hours after the coffee is still steaming when poured. Once the coffee has finished a brew cycle the machine will beep to alert you, with that said I advise waiting a minute or two after to make sure the coffee has stopped dripping completely. I made the mistake once of grabbing the pot the second the beep went off and scorched my hand with coffee drips in the process. The pre-set function is easy to use, the design is sleek and visually appealing and best yet we are saving a BOATLOAD on coffee now that we are not buying k-cups. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone! 5We've had this coffee maker for a year and loved how quiet it was We've had this coffee maker for a year and loved how quiet it was, how hot the coffee was, and how fast its brewing time was. And I'm glad that this machine does work for some people who have given it positive reviews, because when it works, it's great!HOWEVER, all the reviews about the thing leaking are true, and I must offer a mea culpa to all those folks since, I'll admit, when I read those leaking reviews, I put it down to operator error, because honestly, how hard is it to run a coffee maker? But after a year of battling, cleaning up after, cajoling, pleading, cussing, complimenting it when it did a good job, stressing over, and babysitting this thing (heck, I have a husband for that), I've learned the error of my ways and heartily apologize to those reviewers--I'd offer ya'll a cup of coffee, but, well, you know. . ..Anyway, we've had enough of cleaning our countertops because of poor design on the part of Mr. Coffee (there's nothing quite like starting your day cleaning a mess instead of enjoying a nice hot cup of coffee--sort of puts one in a bad mood). So it's going into the trash--the coffee maker, not my husband :-). I won't donate it because why would I want to saddle this thing onto some poor unsuspecting coffee drinker who never did me any wrong? (hmmmm, but there is my mother-in-law . . .)No matter what kind of filter we used or coffee grind or cleaning the basket and filter before use, it leaked, especially if we wanted a full pot. Making half a pot with fingers crossed sort of defeats the purpose of even having this machine.I found what and where the machine plugs up--if the grounds are "washed" out of the basket during the brew cycle, they settle right where the brewed coffee empties into the carafe. To clean the grounds so this hole is no longer plugged means sliding out the basket, taking the whole machine over to the sink, and using the sink spray nozzle to wash them out, which is cumbersome since the machine isn't small.Mr. Coffee was ALWAYS my go to brand of coffee makers. My first one back in the 1980s make great coffee and lasted practically forever. This coffee maker replaced a Mr. Coffee maker, which quit working after two months of receiving it (that should have been a red flag right there). But it's come time to part ways. Mr. Coffee, you've let me down--I don't trust you anymore. Time to move on to higher grounds (pun intended). So to the person looking for a coffee maker, if you enjoy living on the edge (will it or won't it leak), cleaning your countertops constantly, or want a special gift for the in-laws, this coffee maker is for you. Otherwise, keep looking. 1DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY Avoid this unit! I purchased in April of 2016 and as of 9/14/16, it's nothing more than a paperweight. I followed the maintenance procedures as outlined in the manual, i.e. replacing the filter disc monthly and running the cleaning cycle with 6 cups of vinegar after 90 brews. After filling the reservoir, coffee basket and hitting the brew button, the unit began to buzz incessantly. Unplugging and resetting does nothing. Google mrcoffee buzzing noise repairs and the first video that pops up is of a guy smashing several of these units.I emailed Jarden's Consumer Solutions and get some lame email response 5 days later that maybe I'm filling the reservoir incorrectly or misaligned the coffee basket. I'm awaiting a response to my follow up email stating I would not run the cleaning cycle again, but rather want this unit replaced or repaired. 1
