Customer Reviews

I love fries. This thing works great. Comes with everything you need. I have not done any wedge fries but have no doubt it will slice great too. It does take some force to cut the potato, but you are cutting it all at once. Speed is the best way to use this I have found. I cut a small flat on the end as they suggest and kind of get it started in the blades, back off a bit and pull fast. If it was mounted on a wall it would be really fast but I can't do that in my kitchen. Wish the pusher snapped in rather than two screws as it would be much easier to clean. I can do five faster than I could slice one. Seems very well made. I have a stone counter and the suction cups really hold well. I usually make 3/8" fries but the 1/2" cutter requires less force and the 1/4" cutter more force. Very happy with this cutter. 5The reason it got a 4 star and not 5 is sweet potatoes MUST be microwaved first or you WILL BEND ... This is a heavy duty fry cutter no doubt. I worked in my youth for In-N-Out and cut many thousands of pounds of potatoes and this one is not quite as heavy duty but is more than strong enough for me.The reason it got a 4 star and not 5 is sweet potatoes MUST be microwaved first or you WILL BEND blades. 4Great machine... just wish it lasted longer I'm giving this product only four stars because this original broke after two years! We LOVE to make sweet potato frys, and broke numerous plastic fry cutters before finding this awesome machine. It works fantastically, except after two years it too bent and the metal shredded -with one particularly hard sweet potato, maybe? I thought we'd get more than just two years of intermittent use. It didn't seem like a lot of handling. It is, however, a great machine, especially when comparing to other french fry cutters. My mom just bought a $25 plastic one to use with an Air Fryer, and on the second use (with sweet potatoes) the metal bent and small shreds came off - probably onto the potatoes! I had to bring my industrial fry cutter over... and get her one too!I bought the replacement blades/parts recently and hope they last longer than the originals on the machine. honsetly though, as long as the price doesn't go up, I would pay to replace the parts on this machine about every 2 years. At $10 for the replacent piece, and $60-$80 ( I think it went up since I bought it!) for the machine, yiu are looking at a little while before you get a return on your investment, but if you eat French frys/ sweet potato frys like I do, than it won't take long! A little over a one pound bag of Organic at Safeway is typically around ~$6-7. And even organic sill usually has unwanted additives. The organic sweet potatoes I buy in bulk from Costco, 5 lbs or so, is for approx $7-9. In just a couple of bags of sweet potatos, you'd have earned back your investment and would be starting to save money! 4Yes....it cuts sweet potatoes with some effort! After reading many of the reviews, we ordered our cutter with the 1/2" blades. I took a sweet potato, cut it in half, placed the flat side on the pusher side, placed the skinny side on the blades, pushed with some effort.....and VIOLA sweet potato fries! I don't know what the heck these other reviews are talking about that it doesn't cut sweet potatoes, but the picture I uploaded is the proof that it does and does cut them well. Granted I am a strong guy that works out (5'10 200lbs), so I will admit it does take muscle to get sweet potatoes through. Other potatoes are easy breezy. If you're a big guy or you have access to a big guy around the house, this beast of a french fry cutter is The Ticket! 5You can't go wrong with one of these Regardless of what some others have said, this is a 'commercial duty' FF cutter. It's cast iron and stainless steel throughout. I haven't seen a scrap of plastic. Will cut potatoes up to about 6" long. With the 1/4" cutter screen it produces a FF similar to McDonalds, with the 3/8" the result is a larger fry more like Wendy's or Burger King's. If you want to attempt to cut sweet potatoes, you should order one with the 1/2" screen or perhaps one of the wedge screens, (remember, the smaller the screen, the more cuts you will be making, and the more force it will take). 5Requires a lot of force! Bring a sweat shirt and some gatoraid cause this machine requires a lot of force. As other have stated it works well on white potatoes the first couple off times you use it. After that the blades dull quickly. Do not use on sweet potatoes or rutabagas and such. I had mine for a year. I had several issues with it. The dye that is attached to the handle started to turn black which would come off on the ends of the potatoes which would require me to go back and trim the ends. I used mine once a month and after a couple of months the amount of strength required to cut a potato required two people, one to hold the cutter down (suction feet give away) and one to pull the arm. Last week while using it the arm finally broke. When that happened it revealed the metal which is a cheap pot metal. The other issue i had with it is the screws used to hold it together are not standard size screws. I lost the nut one of the suction feet and spend half a day going to hardware stores to try and find a replacement. Nothing would fit the screw. So don't lose any of the parts!Bottom line, we were disappointed after spending over $100 on a cutter to see how it performed and held up. 2Dull blades, need tools to disassemble. A $19 plastic cutter works better. Absolutely horrible. A $19 French fry cutter works better. Thought we would replace our old plastic cutter with something heavy duty that would last. This wasn t it. Blades were totally dull. Had to use all my strength to push a russet through after 3 or 4 attempts. My wife couldn t even cut one. Totally unusable.Add to that you have to totally disassemble the machine to clean it, 3 thumb screws and 3 washers, and another two screws and washers for the push plate that have to be removed with a screwdriver, then you have to take a toothpick to remove all the potato bits stuck between the prongs.I even tried removing all the blades and sharpening them one by one, took about an hour, and after all that the $19 cutter still made smoother, easier cuts.Returned. 1Potato Cutting Machine! I often cook for my family and wanted a quick way to pump out some french fries for my family. It does take a little umph to get started but once in the meat of it, its a breeze. I would recomeend using the next potato to push the initial potato all the way through and so on until you get to your last potato. Cleaning is easy and although the cutter can be a bit difficult to get off the counter with the suction cups, thats what you want the suction cups to do; maintain a stable cutting rig. With patience and a couple of cuss words it comes off the counter well enough. I am really happy with the product and wish I would have bought something like this sooner. 5BUYER BEWARE Pros: heavy duty handle heavy/solid base easy to installCons: shoddy/flimsy metal piece the potato sits on the metal plates feel more like super hard plastic to me SUPER HARD to cut a potato vertically & horizontally the blades suck so much that I literally used this for 15 minutes and one of the blades had already bent when I did finally get a potato to go thru, the potato doesn t even cut all the way thru the screws that s you do screw in doesn t properly hold everything in placeBasically just don t buy this. It looks nice, you see all the nice reviews but this isn t worth your money. I cook professionally and I got GOT w/ this thing. The worst part was when the potatoes finally went past the blade, I couldn t even get the whole potato to go thru and got stuck at the very end. I had to use my chef knife to cut the potatoes from the end of the blades. Horrible product in my opinion. New Star Foodservice, take this product off your shelves and work on it some more. Don t just push products out that are semi-ok and then sell it for a good price. I would rather pay extra for something that actually works efficiently. 1Love this cutter! I am very pleased with this cutter. I can have a mountain of potatoes cut up in just a few minutes. The prep that used to take me an hour now takes 10 minutes, including clean up. I definitely recommend this for anyone who eats a lot of fries. Some other thoughts:It does take some force to get the potatoes through. I don't think it's an unreasonable amount, but it's not like cutting butter. There's a bit of an art to it and once you get used to it running potatoes through goes very quickly. It is heavy built and stands up fine to the pressure of shoving through regular potatoes. I don't know that it would work as well for sweet potatoes but I have not tried to say personally. The suction cups are strong and work very well. Almost too well - lightly set the cutter on the counter and it sticks! It is big and awkward to wash. But even with that, the time it saves is well worth it and washing only takes a few minutes. My gripes on the cutter are simply a function of it being a big, commercial cutter. It is designed as it has to be to do it's job. For someone that cuts up a couple potatoes once a month it probably isn't worth it. We do a dozen potatoes or more several times a week. If you just expect those few things going in you will wonder how you got along without it! 5
