It is so easy to make lots of foam for your coffee with this frother. I use to warm my milk first but have found that if you froth the milk before you warm it in the microwave it works wonderfully!! I pour cold milk below the level on the container (1/4 cup maybe) and froth for about 20 seconds before placing in the microwave. Warm for maybe 30 seconds and you will have great results. Enough foam for one to two servings of coffee depending on how much foam you like. I think you will be surprised how well this works. Highly recommend! 5Listen to the baristi: This is a wonderful device Previous reviewers who had worked as coffee professionals enthused that the Norpro frother produces thicker, creamier froth than even the most expensive expresso machines -- and they're right. There couldn't be a handier and more effective little kitchen aid.1. I don't drink cold coffee drinks, so I have no advice about that, but for bestresults with hot froth, you must have a microwave. Pour in a very small amount of cold milk, lightly hold down the pumper with one hand to stabilize it and pump for 20 seconds with the other hand, and then place the beaker (without the metal pumper, of course)in the microwave for 20-40 seconds, and watch the froth rise, rise, rise. Keep a closewatch because it can overflow easily. The froth is so thick, you have to take it out with a spatula!2. Cleaning: What's the big deal? When you're done, rinse it out immediately with hot water. For a solid scrub, pour hot water and a little detergent into the beaker, and use the pumper to create suds and give the glass and metal a good clean.3. Fragility: Duh, it's glass. Honestly, people go on and on about this, but I cannotsee what the problem is. Be. Careful.Enjoy magnificent foam for coffee & hot chocolate. 5Do yourself a favorWhat a godsend this little device is! With very little effort, it makes a satisfying, frothy foam for morning coffee or oatmeal or anything else you like. (Try it on oatmeal, it's delish) After reading the reviews, I was concerned it was a fragile thing, prone to shattering if you looked at it sideways, but it's sturdy enough that I, the great klutz, am not worried about breaking it. I had been using a stick blender, which was painful on the carpal tunneled wrist.I'm in love with this little baby. I won't be without it again.5Glass Chipping I bought this in late March and by middle April a chunk of the glass at the bottom had fallen out. I had never dropped it and was actually very careful since the container is very thin glass. ( I had expected it to be similar to the thickness/feel of laboratory glassware/beakers.)Luckily, it was within the return window, so back to Amazon it went.On a side note, it does not froth Almond milk much and does not do that great a job on regular milk. It did work enough that I would have kept it if it had not broken. 1Overall a wonderful result! Great addition to your coffee world! I bought this a few months ago as a companion to my Mokkapot, and I have really enjoyed using it. It's quite lovely. While the results aren't *quite* as good as I can get from a professional espresso machine, they are about as close as you can get. I usually fill to max, microwave for 40 seconds and then froth immediately. I try to avoid hitting the bottom when I'm frothing, which is part of why I fill it to max. It does provide a separate layer of thicker foam on top of the milk, so you could use it for macchiatos, cappuccinos, and whatnot. I would definitely recommend buying this thing! Do follow the cleaning instructions. I end up with consistently decent tasting lattes/cappuccinos, and I'm really satisfied with this product. For those of you with dairy allergies: this will work with dairy alternatives. Keep in mind that soy milk froths best because soy has some naturally occurring emulsifiers in it. However, I tried it with almond milk just this morning, and while it wasn't as luxurious as soy milk or regular milk, it did indeed produce a good layer of foam and the milk was definitely more velvety than if I'd just boiled it. 5Just plain fun There are some products out there that are just plain fun and this definitely is one of them.If you like a bit of froth on your coffee, cocoa or whatever, this is the way to go about making it.When first I read the directions, I thought "This is impossible" but it wasn't. You just have to make sure the milk you're using is either ice cold or hot. You pour the milk into the Froth Master up to the maximum mark on the side, put on the lid, pump the shaft up and down with the knob on the lid for up to 40 seconds and voila! Froth!I had gotten an official espresso maker at Walmart that same day to go with it but found the dang thing so fussy to set up and use I decided it's not worth the trouble. There's a supposedly steam-powered "frother" on its right side and I tried that too.. But, once I had the espresso maker nicely steaming and carefully placed the "frother" tip in the milk container as instructed, it literally went wild. Milk started spattering all over the place and the mess on the kitchen counter and espresso maker had to be seen to be believed. When I got everything under control again, I looked in the milk jug.but, outside of a few large bubbles,.there was no froth at all.Unlike the espresso maker, which I'll cover in a separate review, the Norpro Glass Froth Master is definitely a "keeper" and I'll have plenty of fun using it. 5and others will take you to a level of frothy excitement that would best be described as palatable heavenWhy didn't I learn about this product sooner?!? I've been recently diagnosed with a dairy allergy, so I've resorted to ordering milk alternatives in my Starbucks lattes. After a few mishaps at various coffee shops (real dairy used instead of soy/coconut milk), I was miserable for days before recuperating. I've had to come to the conclusion that I need to start making my own lattes to prevent the nausea and pain that ensues after a mixup from the local barista. If you find yourself looking to froth dairy-substitutes, let me share my experience with using a milk frother. I've found that there there is a big difference in the quality of froth produced using different substitutes, meaning some don't froth well, and others will take you to a level of frothy excitement that would best be described as palatable heaven. I've used 5 differs milk-alternatives. The least frothy is any variety of coconut almond blends. They just seem too watery to hold air. A mid-grade froth can be made with Almond milk creamer or an almond milk eggnog substitute. The best, thick, creamy froth is made with soy milk. While I'm unsure of the risk-to-benefit ratio of consuming soy, my gut (pun intended) tells me YES!5Great Frother! This frother is well made. It has a glass beaker with a rubber base. The frothing screen is plastic. The beaker has a "Max Fill" line on it for ease of use.You add your milk product - I have used 2% and half-n-half with excellent results - place the plunger/lid assembly on and cycle the plunger foe 10-15 seconds, or until the milk volume has doubled. You can use this froth as is, or, as I do, microwave it for about 30-60 seconds (depending on you microwave - don't let it boil over) to increase the volume and "set" the froth. Makes for a decadently rich, delicious cup of coffee. My wife adds sugar and/or flavored syrup to the milk before frothing, with excellent results. One caution: The glass beaker is not fixed to the rubber base. The first time I cleaned the frother, I held it by the base while rinsing the outside. The glass came free and broke in my sink. My fault. The bottom feels like it's on there solidly, but it will come off easily when wet.I have since bought two more, one to replace the broken one at home, and one for work. All in all, this is a solid frother at a great price. You can't go wrong here.*****Update******I have now broken 3 of these. The glass is just so thin. I do not handle them roughly. I started buying the heavier BonJour Coffee Caffe Froth Replacement Frother Glass Carafe, 15-Ounce to replace the broken Norpros. They fit the same and are a much heavier glass. Reducing my rating to 4 stars. 4Great replacement for broken Bodum glass - your old frother will fit this one We just needed the glass part to replace our broken Bodum one - since Bodum no longer makes a replacement it seems. On its own, this frother doesn't compare to how well the Bodum worked - not as many screens I think. But the Bodum frother fits in this glass, so we just swapped it in. Fits fine, and we're back in business. I like the attached plastic foot on the glass - keeps it stable without rattling. 4Not impressed (UPDATE: Disappointed!!)I had used a french press in the past to make froth and it had worked just fine, but since the press belonged to my roommate and she moved out (with the french press!), I needed to find an alternative.I really like the fact the the container is made of glass and plastic so I can warm it in the microwave, but as others have said the glass is very very thin! I mostly hand wash the frother for convenience, so the milk doesn't crust on it, but I have run it through the dishwasher a couple of times.Just like I did yesterday; however, to my dismay this morning, when I went to retrieve it from the dishwasher I found the the glass had cracked. :(I had placed it on the top rack with nothing else around it (to make sure nothing bumped it during the wash) and it still broke, I think probably just from the heat of the water.I just order another one of these, not because I am particularly impressed, but because I think it's fine for the price and because I haven't really found a flawless alternative in it's price range.UPDATE 02/19/2014After breaking two beakers in less than 4 months, I've decided no more. The price was good, but I guess you get what you pay for. I found the product to be somewhat effective, but milk often seeped out of the top and the pouring spout and because the mesh disk is not super snug inside the beaker, it didn't froth as much as I'd like. Also, the glass is just too too thin. The first beaker broke in the dishwasher - I think just from the heat - and the second I literally just tapped against the edge of the sink and it cracked. Eventually the crack grew and the glass broke.I don't think the glass needs to be that thin. It's very impractical especially considering the vigorous movements needed to froth. Norpro ... it's a no-no from me. Sorry.1The best milk foam you've EVER had--from a cappuccino snob I was raised on the cappuccino. My mother is the pickiest person when it comes to how her coffee is prepared, liking ONLY espresso and foam. A true cappuccino, she says, only has that bit of silky thick milk between the espresso and the foam. One thing I struggled with a lot back when I had a combo espresso machine/milk steamer was it could never create "microfoam." (That's the incredibly velvety thick stuff that's still foamy but not BIG BUBBLE foam, it's what you make latte art with.) With this amazing little unit, you can. It's just about technique. Some reviews mention issues with durability. Yes, the glass is thin. But we're gentle with it (we never put it in the dish rack with other dishes, for example) and never smash the stem of the plunger into the bottom. It's not hard to do because if you're doing it right, you shouldn't hit the bottom anyway.Other reviews mention rusting, so I waited more than a month before leaving this review. That simply hasn't happened to us--but again, we take care of it. I wash the plunger IMMEDIATELY after use, before popping the glass container into the microwave. If you want to get maximum big foam and microfoam, I recommend plunging for longer than the instructions say. I usually go 1/2 to 2/3 of the way down into the milk before pulling back up again, and probably plunge for 45 seconds plus. It's not a workout at all, it's a very simple motion without much resistance. If you're doing it right, the milk should rise up about halfway between the MAX line and the top. I also microwave for more than 30 seconds because that helps create more foam--you'll see it rise in the microwave. I do about 45-50 seconds but never more or it can go over the top. There will be milk at the bottom that isn't necessarily microfoam, and when I'm really craving a dry capp, I just pour that out and switch back to my cup when I get to the microfoam.Anyway, we absolutely love this device, it was more than worth the money and makes the best-tasting foam I've ever had. 5This product doesn't work, buy the BonJour instead... So I accidentally bought this one after a similar one I owned made by BonJour broke, and I didn't realize I was buying a different product. Big mistake, while the BonJour version looks basically the same, this version is useless - the way the little mesh screen that agitates the milk works is badly designed and doesn't really seal at the edges and as a result, you basically get the amount of foam you'd get if you put the milk in a jar and shook it a few times. In contrast the BonJour version uses a similar mechanism but is made much better and will give you actual foam, more or less what you'd expect from a steam foamer. 1Works extremely great for lattes I need a way to froth my milk for the espresso I make in the morning, but I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a steam frother. I had previously used an electric frothed which mixed the milk, but that soon stopped working well. This was inexpensive and did a far better job than the electric frother. I simply fill with milk to the full line, microwave it for a minute or less, then put the top on and manually pump it to froth. After I pour it in my travel mug, then pour my espresso and mix it. This product exceeded my expectations. 5
