HOT Stripper!
A useful, inexpensive tool. Don't expect the serrated edges to be sharp, you're only coring a soft pepper. I wish the diameter of the curled portion were 5/32nds smaller. Most jalape os are smaller than this seems made for, it does work if you like your peppers gutted and with minimal heat - the ribs and seeds have the most "HOT" of the pepper. Smaller would allow some rib to stay in and with extra twisting still would remove it for those that want a fully stripped pepper. Don't try to reduce the curl by pounding or in a vise as I did as the steel is hardened and fractures without bending. MY BAD!
5Decent little tool.
Peppers need to be fairly big or you'll remove all of the veins and don't get any of the heat. This is fine if you don't want any heat, but we like a little, so it didn't work well for me on my smaller garden-grown peppers. On the plus side, it works very well on de-veining and de-seeding bell peppers, and doubles as an apple corer! The double-sided serration makes it usable with either clockwise or counter-clockwise motions.
4It Works, but not that well
If you core a lot of jalapeno peppers this tool will save you a little time, but it doesn't work that well. The middle almost never all comes out and often it fails to come out at all. Really you have to buy the a certain sized pepper for it to work at all.
3Underwhelmed
I read all the glowing reviews for this thinking it was going to be a wonder tool, but I was quite disppointed with it. I could only get it to kind of work on large peppers, but then I couldn't get the core out of the pepper. On any pepper smaller than 1.25" in diameter, it kept slicing through the wall as soon as serrated blade started into the taper of the pepper. I've gone back to using my paring knife.
2Almost Great
This coring tool does an amazing job coring out the first 2/3s of the pepper. That last 1/3 will get you though!Close to the handle is a serrated edge. Use this to cut the top off the pepper. Then poke the tip of the blade into the edge of membrane and start to twist. The tool really does a great job of scraping *most* of the membrane off the inside of the pepper and collecting the seeds into one tidy wad. Then the barbs on the inside of the tool grab the membrane/seed wad so you can easily pull it out. However, it's impossible for the tool to perfectly fit every sized pepper. As the sides of the pepper taper to a narrow point, the tool can't reach anymore. So there's no way to get the seeds or membrane out of the last 1/3 of the pepper. Depending on how you cook your peppers, that last bit of seeds/membrane can still be enough to leave too much heat in the pepper.Although the cored & stuffed peppers I grilled looked fantastic, they were just too doggone hot for most of my guests. I think I may have to go back to slicing them in half lengthwise so I can completely clean them out.If you can, try to shop for peppers with almost no curve to them, because it's impossible to core out the curved tip. Also look for peppers with a snubbed rounded nose instead of a sharp tip. Those will work better with this tool.So I almost love this tool. It's almost fantastic, but not quite right for me.EDIT (1/30/12):I've been using this tool for over six months now, and it's been steadily growing on me. I've decided that it's not such a bad thing to leave some heat hiding in the tips of the peppers. Otherwise it's possible to clean out too much of the heat and end up with a bland pepper. I think there was also a bit of a learning curve for me. I'm happier with this tool now than I was at the beginning. It's definitely a keeper and I recommend it.
4I love my Norpro kitchen gadgets
I love my Norpro kitchen gadgets! This is no exception. Not the most used tool in my kitchen by any means but handy for it's intended use. I was given a grill tray that holds jalapenos upright for grilling and this is just the tool you need to get all the seeds & veins out while keeping the pepper intact in order to stuff and grill in said pan. Works well
5Amazing little tool
O this product is AMAZING! It is seriously helpful during gardening season. I have used it for all my peppers. Even the bell peppers. It makes it so much easier to hollow out the middle. I used it when i was canning banana peppers and save a ton of time! I flew right thru them! If you use a lot of peppers i would definitely spend the money on this product
5If you seed jalapeno's... you need this awesome gadget!!!!
I've recently purchased a number of kitchen gadgets.... and this another one that's top on the list. There is nothing better that fresh jalapeno's chopped into salsa, pico de gallo, stir fry and the such but getting the seeds on your fingers is no fun. Even after washing it's hard to remove the pepper oil. This gadget allows the removal of the seeds without even touching them.... so easy to use. What I love the most is that it's all-in-one. The neck of the gadget is serrated so you can use to remove the top of the pepper and then insert it into the pepper to remove the seed.... easy to use and clean..... highly recommend.
5Works great
Fresh jalape os are becoming a staple in our house, and some of these peppers are so strong that I find myself coughing as I run them under cold water, seeding them. The longer I work with them, the greater the chance of my reacting to them with watering eyes or coughing. This little gadget looked like a great way to speed up the process. And, it is! Sure, you can still cut the peppers in half, and use your fingers and nails to get rid of the seeds and white ribs, but this sure makes this easier! And faster! And you don't have to cut them in half!
5Works for Roma tomatoes too!
At first, I was disappointed. My peppers were much too small to use this corer. But then I got a box of normal sized jalape os and wow was I impressed!! As others have said, there are sometimes a few seeds left in the bottom of the pepper and if you don't insert it straight into the pepper some of the white membrane might remain. But for the most part this corer is awesome.Today I discovered yet another use for it. I had 50 pounds of Roma tomatoes to turn into salsa. This means peeling and coring an awful lot of tomatoes. I discovered that when you use this pepper corer on the tomatoes, the seeds and core are totally loosed up and you can simply open the tomato and slide all of the seeds, etc right out. I am thrilled with my new favorite kitchen tool.
