Customer Reviews

Rust, Rust, RustThis product is cheap in more ways than one. Yes, the description cautions you to only hand-wash these rings and to dry them immediately when you re done. But the fact is, even if you follow this advice to the letter, these things don t last. The culprit seems to be the rivets. I used these rings a few times to make Japanese-style pancakes, and despite washing by hand and towel-drying, those rivets (and eventually the area around them) started showing those telltale signs of brown rust.In my opinion, cooking utensils aren t worth buying, low-priced or not, when they re guaranteed to be landfill fodder after just a few uses. You re personally not saving any money that way, and on a larger scale, you re ultimately only creating more real estate for garbage island. What s worse, in case you actually forget to follow those stringent cleaning instructions and try to clean them by, say, letting them soak in soapy water with your forks and spoons well, that s when the bad things escalate to comedic proportions. It turns out that when they warn you not to feed the Gremlins after midnight and to never, ever get them wet, they re not kidding, folks. (I m including pictures.)I admit, this most recent time after using them, I forgot to follow the rules and I tossed them into some water with a squeeze of dish soap. All heck broke loose soon thereafter.Yes, this latest escalation was my fault for forgetting those breathless cleaning instructions. But keep in mind: (1) Up until this point, I'd been very careful to immediately hand-wash and dry them after using them, yet they still started to rust. This recent faux pas just seemed to accelerate the process. (2) Let s face it. It s kind of ridiculous that one needs to be this careful when cleaning what are some pretty basic kitchen utensils. A home cook should not have to remember to strictly adhere to the rules of some ancient gypsy curse, lest disaster strike. These are essentially just round cookie cutters, not Faberge eggs, for Pete s sake. People shouldn t be required to tiptoe on eggshells just to make some thicker-than-normal pancakes.OTHER PROBLEMS: In addition to the rusting, there are some other drawbacks to these rings (at least when using them for thick-style pancakes).a) Time Commitment: You have to clean/rinse them after every single use and before you add the next batch of batter. Here s the procedure: You grease the interior before the first pancake. While that greasing helps to release that first pancake after it s cooked, batter residue still remains on the inside of the ring. That means that after using a ring to make one measly pancake, one has to wait for the metal to cool down enough to handle. Only then can you wash the batter off and dry the interior. Then you grease it again so you can finally use the ring to make a second pancake. In other words, prepare to set aside a good chunk of your day.To be fair, maybe all similar types of ring molds require the same time commitment, regardless of the material they re made from. But it just seemed ridiculous to me. (I do see another reviewer suggests people look for a brand of *nonstick* ring molds. That definitely seems worth a try.)b) Crap accumulation: These aren t one solid piece of metal. Rather, these rings have a seam where batter tends to hide. (The seam is where those problematic, rusty rivets are.) This makes thorough cleaning more difficult.c) Not nonstick friendly: And because these aren t one solid, smooth piece of metal, the rings tend to be kind of sharp, with an errant corner here and there, at the point where the ring is sealed. It s not a good feeling watching these edges unavoidably scrape against the surface of your nonstick skillet as you try to flip over your Japanese-style pancake. As such, the last few times I used these (before they succumbed to rust) I felt compelled to use a cast iron skillet, even though my larger nonstick skillet probably would ve made the whole process easier. But it didn t seem worth the risk of damaging an entire skillet just to make some pancakes. 2Perfect for crumpets!Started a new tradition of crumpets on Christmas morning. These are perfect and very easy to use and clean. I use a little butter and then heat on my electric griddle @325. So, so easy. 5Rusted before I got to use them.I washed these by hand, but they sat in my sink for a couple hours before I got to them. They were slightly wet in the sink, and they rusted before I got them washed. I will not be able to use them because of the rust. They were not sitting in standing water, and it didn't even occur to me that they would rust sitting with other dishes. I am disappointed that I'll never get to use them and so I won't know, truly, how they work. 1Work well for English muffinsI've started making English muffins a lot lately and wanted something I could use to cut and shape the dough rather than trying to find odd objects around the house that could help with the same. These are about what I'm looking for--good size for the task and obviously designed for this exact purpose. I would caution a potential buyer on a few things. First, neither edge of the ring is particularly sharp, which is probably great for safety and pretty similar to a cookie cutter, but the difference with cookies is that you don't need to worry about "deflating" those. I'd prefer a bit of a sharper edge so I can cut muffins without smashing the yeast dough down so much. Second, they're very thin. I don't find this a problem, but just keep in mind you should be careful not to bend/etc. them. Finally, the description suggests you might also use them for batter or eggs, but you really can't. They work fine for English muffins, but anything liquid will seep through the bottom, which (maybe due to the thinness of the rings) does not lie flat with the surface of the pan--and it also doesn't work well for moving the egg/dough/etc. around in the pan to prevent sticking. I think I'd have better luck just trying on my own.All things considered, I bought these for muffins and they work well for that purpose (aside from the fact that I wish using them to cut was a bit easier). I wouldn't count on them for much else, but at this price there isn't much to complain about. If you're looking for the same, I'd recommend these if you don't want to spend much and don't mind the slight negatives--very few if you're only using them as muffin rings. 4Wonderful ToolsUsed exclusively for making crumpets at our house, these rings are great. Based on prior reviews, I never wash the rings, but simply wipe down, coat with oil and store in their box. No signs of rust whatsoever after 2 years. Great value for the money. 5Works FineI was able to make four nice English Muffins using these rings. I did not spray them or coat them with anything. I placed them in the hot non-stick skillet, sprinkled a little cornmeal into each, and placed the formed dough into the rings. Then I sprinkled a little cornmeal on top of the dough. When the dough had risen over the top of the rings, I flipped them over with a pancake turner and removed the rings with a pair of tongs. No sticking, no scratching, and no problems. The next time I think I will blot the dough in cornmeal before putting it in the pan, though. The excess cornmeal got very dark brown and smoked. 5They Do What They Are Meant To DoThese are sturdier than I was led to believe in the reviews. Both ends are rolled very tightly. I tried using butter on them and the batter stuck. Used spray on vegetable oil and they slid right off. Good value for the money. 4it is big fun and EASYWhat a hoot! If you haven't tried to make your own English muffins or crumpets, it is big fun and EASY. I used a crumpet recipe off the internet. Took about 10 minutes to make the batter (sort of a pancake batter that uses yeast instead of baking powder). Grease the rings, put them on the skillet, pour the batter in and fry until bubbles break on top like pancakes. Pull the rings off with fork or tongs, flip the cake over and brown for a minute. Voila! An inexpensive way to try something new for your breakfast or brunch or in my case I gave them as a 'freshly made' present. Have a good time! 5IdealI received these last evening and used them this morning to make crumpets. They worked a charm! For the most part, they simply slid off the cooked batter, and at the few spots where they were inclined to stick a bit (I may have missed with the lube) it was easy to loosen them by sliding a table knife between the ring and the crumpet. 5Roundest muffins in townI have been using these for couple years and they are still in great shape. Great for muffins but also for perfect round eggs on the stove too. 5
