Customer Reviews

Used to be called "Degradable Compost Bags." Name changed because they are just plastic bags and not compostableWhen I bought this product in March 2013, it was labeled "Norpro Degradable Compost Bags, 50 Pieces." (see attached pic of my order). This product has since been renamed as "Recyclable Bags" and for good reason. They don't degrade, let alone compost. The bags are completely intact at the bottom of my outdoor compost bin, two years after they were put there. The rest of the bin contains pure compost. I had to pick the intact plastic bags out of my compost and sent them to a landfill. I can't even recycle them at this point.About six months ago I switched to Oggi Eco-Liners which break down very quickly.UPDATE: I finally finished using a batch of compost made FIVE YEARS AGO. I am still picking the completely intact bags out of the compost. They are not even remotely compostable. 1I have given up on these bags as everyone I've ...I have given up on these bags as everyone I've used has leaked. It breaks down almost immediately. I don't pull my counter top composter daily. I gave it two stars for those people who are ok with having to put it out daily. These are not suited to my needs. I've been using a kitchen composter for years with no bag issues before this brand. 2Not Compostable....isn t that easy I cannot fully rate these because I have not used them yet due to a move right now, however they came packaged good and I know that they re not compostable. I prefer to use these and then dispose of them the proper way then to have compostable bags that fall apart and leave a mess on me in the middle of my kitchen, just saying..... 5Not apporved for use in the City of SeattleAs others have said, these bags are not approved for putting into green waste bins. In Seattle, if you put either of the Norpro bags in the green waste bins, you are subject to a fine. Approved bags have the word "compostable" and the compostable symbol printed on the bag. On the Seattle.gov site you can find the approved list by searching for "approved compostable bags".http://www.seattle.gov/util/myservices/foodyard/houseresidents/approvedcompostablebags/Norpro, which is headquartered just north of Seattle should get with the program! 1Not CompostableIf you're interested in lining your countertop compost bin, you should know that these liners ARE NOT COMPOSTABLE. I carefully read the description, and my mind still didn't understand that when they said the liners were reusable and recyclable, the subtext was that they are not compostable. They are plastic. I went to the company's website (epi-global), and it's possible that their plastic bags have something in them which makes them break down faster than regular plastic. This is a great thing in general, but I want the ease of transporting my entire countertop compost into the main compost. So fair warning. 1Improved from previous purchasesI've been buying these bags for years and they've done the job, although they weren't always sturdy enough to lift from the composting bucket without tearing, so I not pull them from the bucket until I was next to my outside composting bin. My last order indicates to me that they've been made of a thicker material. Is this permanent improvement or an error in manufacturing? We'll see. My other observation is that they don't compost quickly and if they are thicker, it may take even longer. But that's OK as they eventually do break down. 5Have used for 2 yearsI have been using these Norpro Recyclable Bags for a little over two years. I do not throw them into the compost pile though but instead use the bag once again in the compost bucket and then re-use it, if not too messy, to dispose of junk from the garage or yard and then throw away. I wanted a brand that would decompose though to help my husband in case I am away from home and he throws the full bag into the compost pile. What I like about these bags is that they are sturdy and I can often use the bag two times in the bucket before disposing of it. My cousin gave me a couple bags of a different brand to try and her bags were not sturdy and ripped before the compost was ready for the compost pile causing a mess in the compost bucket or in route to the compost pile. I've never had a problem with the Norpro bags ripping; I much prefer these Norpro bags over the bags my cousin uses. 5Misleading description implies bags are compostable. They're not!I searched for "compostable" bags, and that's how I found this product, in addition to its being featured as a "customers also bought..." item along with the counter top compost pail I purchased. I thought the bags were of a material that was biodegradable and would decompose in my backyard composter, though maybe at a slower rate than food scraps. I didn't research these thoroughly enough before I hit the one-click-purchase button. After I had made the purchase, I realized that the bags are recyclable/compostable only with chemical additives that community waste management facilities add to accelerated decomposition. You have to go to the manufacturer's site to learn about their composition. I should have read about them before buying them, I admit. I do feel like the description is intentionally vague in an attempt mislead buyers, and I am disappointed by that. The one redeeming feature is that the bags are really strong. I can pack a lot in, and with coffee grounds, etc., a full bag can get pretty heavy, which would strain or break a less sturdy model. That said, I would trade the tensile strength any day for a bag that is actually biodegradable. 2Keeps everything clean, unless they leakI bought these bags to use with the Norpro ceramic counter composter, as recommended by Amazon. Most of the time, the bags are incredibly convenient: they are easy to carry outside for long-term composting and keep me from having to clean out the ceramic container. However, occasionally the bags will leak out the bottom, causing drips of compost juice through the kitchen when I carry the bag outside and a small pool in the bottom of the container. To be honest, this is aggravating, but not enough to prevent me from purchasing another box of 50 bags when the first one ran out. An occasional rinse of liquid out of the bottom is better than cleaning out the entire container every time. 4Not CompostableI incorrectly assumed you could toss these bags into the compost bin at our building. You cannot. I was mislead by the term "recyclable". I suppose they are in theory - you could use these over and over (not convenient at all, and a bit gross) or you can take them to a local store and toss into their plastic bag recycle bin. But if looking for a simple way to transport compost from your kitchen to a larger bin (for say your apartment building) easily w/o throwing away the bag, these are not for you. 2
