Grinding Greatness These salt and pepper grinders are top notch quality and feature grinding from the top of the device instead of the bottom. This makes for much cleaner use without the mess of bottom grinding units. The containers are large and made of durable plastic and they feature grind settings so you can determine the size of the grindings you prefer. I like coarse ground for pepper but fine grind for salt - easy to change as needed. Highly recommend especially if you dislike refilling often. These hold a lot of salt and pepper and refilling from the bottom is fast, easy and non-messy. 5Happy Great size so they don't need to be refilled constantly, but aren't so big that they are hard to store. Easy adjustment for grind size. Turns easily. Love the top mounted grinder - no mess on the table. Overall great well thought out product, just wish they had thought about using a non corrosive material for the rod inside the salt chamber like they did for the grinding mechanism. Not an issue if the salt chamber is full but when it is half empty you can see the rod and it is all discolored. Minor cosmetic issue but a bummer because otherwise it is a great product. 4Good grinder, the action takes some getting used too. This is the nicest peppermill I've ever owned, but it's not without its problems. I like that the grinding end stays "up" during normal storage, so that there's no little pile of ground pepper on the table.The grinding action on where we found it to be a bit odd. It's hard to describe but it just feels a little weird in the hand, but we're getting used to it. Also, ours has started to squeak on occasion during longer grind sessions, like seasoning a prime rib.Also, it is quite easy to tip over when you turn it upside down to fill the reservoir with more pepper, as the base end is heavier than the top. I'm still finding peppercorns in the kitchen weeks later. Be careful.Overall, I like this pepper mill, and I would buy it again. The grind quality is nice, and the coarseness selector work great. Build quality is nice as well. I may end up trying the matching salt mill as well. 4Good grinders, piece fell off first month though... I like the fact that these are ceramic grinders (that won't rust with items like Celtic salt). We were really disappointed that the center silver piece came off and exposed the black plastic underneath within two weeks of purchasing these. I went to contact the seller to see if I could exchange them, but my "30 day window" closed a couple of days ago, it says. I might try to glue the piece back on, but not sure what glue to use that would be food safe. Disappointing to have something fall off so quickly. Otherwise, the grinding mechanism seems to work well and I like the fact that salt and pepper come out of the top of the grinders so I don't get salt and pepper residue on the counter or table. 4The salt grinder works great. The pepper grinder The salt grinder works great. The pepper grinder, however does not. You have to turn the mill several times to get just a few flakes of pepper, regardless of coarseness setting. Shaking it to get the peppercorns to settle in bottom of grinder helps a little. 2Falling apart in less than 2 weeks (but replacement has been holding up as it should) The small cap on the top of my pepper mill just fell off. Have used just a few times since then. I checked the cap on the salt mill and it seems to be ok. The pepper mill still seems to grind ok, but since a prime motivation in my buying this Lua set rather than the regular OXO Good Grips Grinders (of which I already have 5 and never had a bit of trouble) was for the sleek look to display in a special place in my kitchen. Disappointed to say the least ...2/15 update: Realizing I would never be happy with the mill in the defective condition that it was, I did contact OXO customer support and sent them pictures. They asked for me to return the set and they would send another set. It took a while, but now I have a new set and so far, so good.7/15 update: I have upgraded my rating from 2 stars to 4 stars since the replacement mill has been holding up as it should and haven't had any further problems. 4Great mills I love the fact that the mill is on top, so the table does not get paper and salt on it, which always happened with the ones where the grinder is down...this may seem like a minor issue, but when one is always swishing pepper and salt of the table...or jiggling the grinder to knock the loose salt/pepper off.......The adjustment is at the top, as seen in the pic with the dots for indicators, while the part that is twisted, is the opposite end. (typical of most grinders, the part one turns is the opposite of the grinder head. Lastly, they are filled from the end oppsosite of the grinder head (typical). Large opening (most of the bottom of the grinder). Great capacity. Clear view, so one knows the contents and the amount there.I bought these for the dinning table. They look nice, just wish there was a smaller version, not bad, but I think 3/4 the size would look nicer. Much smaller, and then too small for the hand.Range of grind is pretty good, of the 5 settings, for salt, 2nd lowest is about that of table salt, 1 is heavy popcorn salt. Pepper, 1 is typcial for ground pepper, while 3 is about that of course. 5Good overall function Happy with the function of these grinders. What I like: easily adjust how coarse or fine you want the grind, no mess from bits of salt and pepper falling out the bottom. Overall I would say construction seems solid. Only reason I wont give 5 starts is because of the little aluminum cap that covers a small screw in the center of the grinder at the top fell off both the salt and pepper grinders within the first few days of use. Seems they stuck the little aluminum caps on with a bit of not too strong glue, understandably because you have to be able to get the screw underneath in case the unit has to be dismantled. Glue is not the right solution to this. This does not affect the function in any way but cosmetically you now have this exposed screw at top. A little more attention to detail could have averted this issue. 4Decent Thank GOD that someone finally had some sense to put the grinders at the top. I was very tired of always having a mess to clean from prior mills.Pro's:- Grinder on top (removes mess)- Decent quality buildCon's:- Price- The grind can seem inefficient many times. Sometimes I feel like i'm really having to crank this thing and it's still barely sprinkling anything. 3piece of junk ... after eight months ........ eight months later and it does not grind pepper ... junk ... i only gave it one star so i can review it and let ya'll know DON'T BUY THIS POC ..... 1
