Customer Reviews

In a previous review I gave these a 5 star ... In a previous review I gave these a 5 star rating but said I would f/u in a few months; well this is the f/u and after the first few times of intense use I found out that the ink simply stops flowing. Why? I wish I knew!! I've tried the professional ink cleaner on nib and even bought new nibs ; I froze the pens for 10 minutes and still had no flow, so my art league suggested a slight flame and wipe off with etoh or cleaner. Still no flow and ink is 4/5 of chamber and maybe 16-20 hours of use and still no flow!! Actually this seems to be the norm for gel pens of the many types I've tried! I think I'll stick to the Dr. PH jars that I can us w/ brushes or syringes or whatever I think of including blowing through straws! 3Brilliant color, awesome precision Pens, like some foods, are an acquired taste. Some folks are just not going to like writing with a utensil this thin so may reserve these for simple detail work or art projects. However, I actually like writing letters with these as it best highlights my cursive. I do get a cramp if I over grip as the barrel is quite thin. But as the market isn't flooded with .25 gel inks, this is the best fine line gel ink I've ever worked with. I started with a single color and then invested in this larger set. I'm a fan. The colors are so vibrant considering how thin they apply! The flow can be, at times, a little jerky. Sometimes the way you're holding the pen or the paper used, will affect this and you'll experience mild skipping. If you want a pen to work perfectly smoothly, every time, and on every sort of paper, skip the more 'quirky' Slicci .25. Occasionally they have a mind of their own and this is probably another reason why I love them. I find they last quite awhile too, they obviously don't leave any bleed through (except on onion or tracing paper) and I haven't experienced any issues with them drying out prematurely. If you're familiar with Pilot's Hi-Tec-C pens, these are very similar... but the tip on the Slicci is less flexible. That's good for some purposes but may feel too stiff for others. But I love the sturdiness of a 4mm (long) needle-tipped metal tip. Try one out before committing to the set. They dry super fast too, which is a big bonus. They're very lightweight. The flow is 90% consistent and ideal for those who write tiny or desire precision. I am agog at how much writing, in so little space, these pens achieve. I've only used these on light colored paper so cannot vouch how they perform on darker paper or high cotton/pulpier papers or any non-paper surface. See my attached pic for the colors. 5these are rather awesome for drawing they have a solid single 'fine' line that can easily be build up.you can also lay the pen on its side and it has a consistent low flow of ink that allows for shading.its my go to for train doodles in moleskine or on higher quality drawing paper (see images)The drawbacks are that if you drop it in its tip, its done, gone, broken, you can try to make it work a million ways but it won't.so don't drop them.and if you use a paper with any kind of film or coating it will gum up the ball in the tip, so yeah, don't do that either.Otherwise, these are super awesome!!! 5Smooth writing, little ghosting I love trying new pens and purchased these on a whim. Overall I am really impressed with the ink flow and lack of ghosting on Leuchtturm1917 dot journal page. Usually bold ink is an instant seep-through!I have given 4 stars for the following little issues: I have found that the light blue (they call it baby blue) doesn t flow as well as the others and some of my lines can appear scratchy. The pen body is very thin and the design has the textured plastic on the grip. I have long fingers so need to use a grip assistant to be able to hold these without my hand cramping. If I don t use a grip assist the textured plastic quickly wears my skin down. even after ink dries for a while highlighters do cause light smearing. Honestly, it s way less than other pens I ve used but if you re a perfectionist, be warned. The pros: Most colors have great, smooth ink flow Colors are bright and bold, not washed out like some other fine tripped pens Ink dries almost instantly. I am right handed but i think a lefty would find these hardly smear. Nib is long to allow gentle flexing so I don t feel like I m digging into or tearing the paper when I write. Very, very little ghosting (I included a photo of the back of the page I wrote on). Pens come apart indicating it may be possible to purchase refills which would be a bit economically and environmentally positive (I haven t researched to see if refills are available).I am happy enough with these pens to look for additional colors and to use them in my regular writing rotation. 4I love using these pens, but for one small defect These pens always please me,because they leave such a true, thin black line. I removed one star because even when the ink is clearly still 1/2 full, the pen tends to temporarily dry up, and I have to wait to use the pen again, something that slows down my note taking. It helps, therefore, to carry a few extra. I do my math studies in these pens and love that I can make detailed diagrams and clear symbols even with just a small amount of space on the page. These pens are also really nice to do ink sketches with. When I apply a very slight pressure on the page, I can get a sort of shading effect with the ink. 4Meets its promise of being extra fine, but does not provide the most fluid writing experience I was looking for an extra fine black pen, and after reading some reviews at specialty pen sites, decided to try the Pentel Arts Slicci. This is definitely the finest pen I have ever written with, but the writing experience was somewhat scratchy, for lack of a better word. It just did not feel as fluid as I would have liked against the page. The barrel was also slimmer than I expected slimmer than any other pen I own.For people looking for a very fine point, this will do the job. My go-to remains the Pilot G2 Retractable Premium Gel Ink Roller Ball Pen, Ultra Fine Point, Black Ink. That's the other pen in the sample image I provided. 4The best ULTRA fine pen I have found so far Never thought I would be obsessed with pens, so this is weird, but I love this pen.If you are the type of person that is looking for a pen that has the thinnest line then your search can possibly end here. I bought a number of pens that describe themselves as having a ultra/micro/super fine point, but failed when put to the test, the Pentel Slicci 0.25 does not. I've compared it to the following pens: Pilot V5 RT, Uniball Signo RT 0.38, Uniball Signo Micro 207, Uniball Deluxe Micro, Pilot G2 0.38mm, Pilot GTEC-C4 0.4mm. Only the GTEC-C4 (also known as HITEC) came close, but fails in other ways. The Slicci has the thinnest line, but not only that it is dark, writes amazingly smoothly for a fine point (no, of course not as smooth as the Pilot V5 RT, but you can't expect that with a point this sharp), AND doesn't skip. I can apply almost no pressure and the ink flows effortlessly. It also dries very quickly and has very minimal smudging when used on good paper.I've tested all of the above pens using Black n' Red notebooks, which have the best paper I've found in a reasonably priced notebook.Pros:-THINNEST line of the above listed pens-Dark ink-Fast drying with low smudging-Smooth writingCons:-The pen barrel is thin, so if you need a thicker pen barrel, you'll need to look elsewhere or purchase a different pen and use the Slicci ink refill.-The distributer on amazon charges more than at an alternative site (I'd recommend searching google for "Japanese Pens" and see what you find)I have another 5 pens in the mail that are all <0.4mm, so I will update this review if one of them bests the Slicci.Edit: I should also mention that despite other reviewers commenting on the reliability of this pen, I have not had any instances where it "dried out" or stopped working, but have only been using it for a little over a week now, so maybe that will change.Update June 2014:I still think this is probably the smoothest ultra-thin gel pen you can buy, and using the multi-ink (Pentel Sliccies BG3) version eliminates the barrel problem.HOWEVER, the best ultra-thin pen for hospital use has to be the Uni SXR-38 jetstream knock ballpoint pen refill 0.38 mm - Black Ink placed inside of the Uni Alpha-gel Jetstream Ink Ball Point Pen 0.7mm Black-body. The heaviness with comfortable grip and the ultra thin line (thinner than the 0.38 sliccie even) makes it the perfect pen for progress notes, etc. where space is limited and you don't want to risk any smearing. It's not a gel pen, but it is the smoothest and thinnest writing pen I have ever used. 5Nice pens. Creates very fine lines for detailed schematics and drawings. I'm a physicist and engineer. I often do calculations and drawings that are on grid paper with 2-mm spacing...VERY detailed stuff. These pens allow me to make very detailed schematics, drawings, and notes for my clients...much more detailed than I could do with a pencil (unless I stopped to sharpen it after every other stroke). The pens feel okay in the hand...they have knurls for stability and a good grip. They are hard plastic bodies, so if you grip one for a long time without changing your grip, you will start to get sore, but that's not a huge deal...just lay the pen down every few minutes, have a drink of coffee, and it's fine when you pick it back up.The only knock I have against them is that ALL of the pens in the box I got had stickers on the barrels...and when you take the stickers off, it leaves behind a very sticky residue that I had to use alcohol wipes to get off. 5Heavenly, but alas, not waterproof! UPDATE:This is my second review for these pens and I am still addicted! I also just discovered stone paper journals....and these are an absolute match made in heaven! Everything is hyper-detailed and wonderful--the paper can take any media and stay flat and perfect and the pen glides over it like a thread on ice....I am so in awe of both of these discoveries that I don't waste a speck of the materials....However, I am not ready to die just yet with all my final wishes granted...the pens are not waterproof and bleed into invisibility at any contact with wet media. I am willing to accept this on some level--that my journals are conversations with ghosts and not grandchildren. But if Pentel could make a waterproof ink for these pens I would perhaps feel like I was looking into the face of some merciful and loving Deity...BEST FEATURES:The pens are super thin, so no hand cramping, even writing and drawing up to an hour a day. And you can see exactly where the ink level is on these since the casing is clear. This is impossible to tell on every other brand of micro pen.EARLIER REVIEW:THIS, at long last, is the dream pen!!!! I have tried out every micro pen on the market and this is the one: it writes for you practically and it is thin enough that holding it does not cause cramping. While the other pens I have bought do claim to be waterproof and archival (while this does not), I don't even come close to getting my money's worth out of them. The nib is gone far before the ink is or should be used up. I have been using this one like a starved person for a week (writing 50% more at each sitting--because I adore the feel of it) and it is as PERFECT as when I opened the package. I will never use another pen, as I have finally found the ideal one in this!!!!! Thank you, Pentel, for the most perfect pen in all of creation!!!! It completes me!!!! 5Too expensive Over the years, I have purchased the following green pens:--Pentel Arts Slicci Metallic 0.8 mm Needle Tip Gel Pen, Metallic Green Ink, Box of 12 (BG208-MD) $38.53 ($3.21 each)--Pentel Hybrid - Dual Metallic - Liquid Gel Rollerball Pen - K110 - Pack of 3 - Green / Metallic Blue $10.98 ($3.66 each)--Pentel Arts Slicci 0.25 mm Extra Fine Gel Pen, Green Ink, 1 Pack (BG202BPD) $6.85 eachThe 0.8 mm pens were the first ones I purchased (June 2015). I liked the metallic color, but wished the ink was darker and finer. When I write, sometimes the ink is so thick that an e looks like a c . By April 2019, the ink in the last 5 pens had dried up. I don't write enough to justify buying a dozen pens at once, so I decided to look for different ones. I settled on the 0.25 mm and 1.0 mm pens. The 0.25 mm pen does not automatically write. I have to scribble on scratch paper to get the ink flowing. The pros of this pen are that it doesn't smear as much as the other two pens and the finer lines means it is easier to write legibly. The 1.0 mm pens write instantly, but also smear easily. I like that the color is dark, but it's more blue than I expected/wanted. And, being thicker means I have to write bigger to be able to read what I wrote. The picture shows how each pen compares to the others. The lines demonstrate how much the ink smears immediately after writing with each pen. The 1.0 mm pen is fine as long as you let the ink dry before touching. 3
