Customer Reviews

I love this pencil, buy me 100I prefer a heavy, fountain pen feeling utensil to write with. I also prefer .5 leads or smaller, this is exactly what I wanted. I'm not really fond of pens, my writing seems even more appalling with pens than pencils. Carrying around a plastic mechanical pencil seems very unprofessional so when I found this and had to get it, it fits in my pocket, it is nice and heavy, but not too heavy. As a woman, pockets are my worst nightmare, they're so small and I have to force my note 3 in them since I don't carry purses. But this pencil is pocket sized with the cap on, but just the right size when you need to do an essay... or doodle. The only downside is that the eraser is TINY! Luckily I have since picked up the habit of using a block eraser. 100/10 would recommend. 5Beauty, Function & QualityAs a self-described lifelong "office supply Nerd-ette", and owner of a multitude of geeky-drafting mech pencils, my love-affair with Pentel Sharp Kerry pencils began when I decided to purchase a simple, portable model to match my pink, Ohto Tasche pocket pen (ASIN B002UXQNRY). While Ohto does make an exact matching mech pencil (ASIN B002UXQNS8), the good reputation of Pentel's Sharp Kerry piqued my interest.Upon receiving my Kerry, I knew I had made the correct decision.Within days I ordered a blue, grey, and finally the Limited Edition Black & Gold model. They're all well-made, nicely balanced propelling-type mech pencils.Arrived well-packaged, in a sleek, hard-plastic, ovoid-shaped case: good for both protection against scratches in a drawer, or for presentation purposes. The cap is constructed of brushed aluminum, while both barrel parts are of a lustrous plastic, somewhat reminiscent of celluloid. While this contradicts the product description of being "all-metal",it doesn't detract from my satisfaction with the product.Earlier Sharp Kerry pencils were indeed constructed of all-metal components, but as of late this is sadly no longer the case.I also noticed another reviewer mention a slight colour "mismatch" between the barrel & cap--- the difference in materials would account for this. As noted, the colour difference is very slight-- nearly imperceptible in my pink and blue Kerry's, but much more pronounced/noticeable in the grey colour. (The barrel is several shades darker grey than the cap). I find it an attractive contrast quite frankly, but realize it may not be to everyone's liking. The cap offers a reassuring, audible "click" when capping the pencil and upon affixing it to the barrel end when preparing to write.A small, white eraser is located under the cap's crown. The eraser's accessibility is dependent on the cap being firmly secured to the end of the barrel. The "click" action pushes the eraser into place. One needs only to remove the cap's end-crown to reveal it.The machine-knurled "mid-section", while placed a bit too high up the barrel to properly function as a "grip", does makes for a rather elegant ornamentive touch.A very well-balanced writing instrument, with or without the cap affixed. Very comfortable to write/draw with for extended periods, even for those with some arthritic symptoms. The diameter is slightly wider than average, but in no way could be considered a "fat-body" mech pencil. Affixing the cap while writing adds a bit more girth.I've not experienced any "lead-wiggle" in any of the four Kerry's that I own. Each "click" delivers the perfect amount of lead-advance.I'd describe this pencil as being somewhat "executive", appearance-wise.As a professional illustrator-writer-crossword constructor, I load my Kerry's with various soft grades of lead (4B - B).Work has a renewed pleasure now as I sit down each day at my desk and reach for my Sharp Kerry's.Overall, the Kerry's simple design is truly a thing of beauty in an age of complicated gadgets. This inexpensive pencil is pleasing both functionally and aesthetically.Since experiencing the Sharp Kerry, even my beloved $150 Montblanc mech pencil has been gathering dust.Thank you for reading,- CC, Amazon Prime Member-Reviewer* HINT: Re: Eraser refills (Pentel Z31). Avail at a much lower price ($1.49/tube of 4 erasers) at OfficeWorld dot com. 5I would love to give this 5 stars but the pencil is ...After purchasing and using Pentel's Graph Gear 1000 automatic pencils for a few years, I decided to order this decidedly more stylish pencil for use in college. The pencil is very well built, well balanced, rugged, durable, stylish, and has a very satisfying weight and feel about it. I would love to give this 5 stars but the pencil is too short for my hands (even when the cap is attached to the other end) and writing with it is uncomfortable after a half hour or so. As a consequence I rarely use this pencil but I still love the way it looks. 4Love this great pencil...no doubt, with a small but...Saw that art teacher Lee Hammond uses this and swears by it so though I have other mech pencils (3 Alivin DraftMatics) I decided to check it out. Less than 8 hours in, I can see what all the fuss is about. It's pretty spiffy all the way around. Love the cap to protect the point, and the feel especially.A few things, though-It doesn't come with instructions. Nothing on their www site that I could find either. If you want to know how to change the leads, where to find the eraser, and even how to work it, this is one case where reading the questions and the reviews here will help you. You get the pencil in a plastic box with a clear cover. It comes with the infamous small eraser and 4? leads installed. Not sure if they're HB or 2B. That's it. Still, would it have killed them to put a few instructions in with it, instead of making customers search through the hundreds of reviews to find answers? I could have docked them a star for this, but it is a stellar item. Also, a reviewer said to beware of a change in quality. It seems pretty high quality to me thus far. I will watch out for the advance getting loose though.Since it's a pencil geared for pros, I'm a bit surprised it doesn't come in more sizes that .05 and .07. I'll have to stick with my DraftMatics for those. Also, one thing on the DraftMatics that might have been nice to have is the lead indicator which you can rotate to indicate which kind of lead you have installed. It's on the outside of the DM and would diminish from the style of the Kerry, but perhaps on the inner lead tube...?Other than that? I'm keeping it. And, probably keeping it on me at all times, since it has the great cap, with the Click! 5Best mechanical pencil, used it for years and yearsI used this mechanical pencil all through high school, college, and many years of graduate school. I've misplaced my original, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it's still available. I've become a bit of a connoisseur of mechanical pencils recently, and found this one works better than even the high-end expensive models. In particular, the tip of the pencil is very solid and well-made, and holds the leads securely. That's important to me, because I tend to prefer softer lead (3B) to make darker lines, and the softer leads are a bit fragile. Pencils that don't hold the lead well will break it up into small segments, but this pencil doesn't do that. Even my fragile 3B leads are held securely and don't break. If you're looking for a mechanical pencil of excellent quality, this is the one to get. 5Well made capped pencil. One of three capped mechanical pencils I own. Different makers and different lead sizes: 0.5 mm, 0.9 mm, and this one, which I got in the 0.7 mm size.0.9 mm and some older 1.1 mm pencils (which aren't capped) are my choice for general writing, but 0.7 is still a good compromise, and better for drawing. The advantages of a cap are that it protects your shirt pocket if you carry it that way, and protects the fragile looking lead feeder tube when you're not using the pencil. With the Kerry, you'll want to post the cap on the back when using it for two reasons. First, it makes the pencil a comfortable length (otherwise it's a bit short), and second, it pushes the button on cap out far enough that you can pull it off to get to the eraser. The eraser itself is a standard Pentel kind for which you can get replacements, but it is fairly small. The button on the cap works with the button on the body of the pen so that you can advance the lead just as easily with the cap posted or not.Everything is very well designed and put together. For actual use, I prefer light, fairly slim pencils like this. It would be nice if they had a 0.9 mm version, but you can't have everything. I'd have to say that of my three capped pencils, this is the best overall. 4The best mechanical penThe best mechanical pencil, I purchased multiple of these pencils.Very balance & comfortable when writingThe eraser is hidden in the pencil cap, not the bodyI prefer to use 0.5 version with Pentel Ain Pencil Leads 0.5mm 4B,or 0.7 version with Pentel Ain Pencil Leads 0.7mm 2BI did loose the eraser cap, and emailed Pentel Warranty Service Dept. to figure out how to order the replacement. The next day I got an email from Pentel with this message"As a courtesy we would like to offer to send 3 complimentary replacement eraser caps for your Sharp Kerry pencils." 5Solid product but description needs updating; the barrel is no longer metal.Excellent. Nice feel, good design. Finally a pencil with a decent cap that keeps you from poking holes in your pocket. Solid fitting metal cap closes the pen up to a compact size that's easy to carry. This is the second one of these pens I've bought. First one was red, and had some problems with a loose metal ring in the cap, which was easily fixed with a bit of super glue. Second one is black and is pretty solid so far. I chose black because the description said it still had a metallic barrel and prefer an all-metal pen. The barrel was, in fact, a solid black plastic with a slight glitter to it. It's still pretty solid but the plastic seems to show nicks and tooth marks sooner than a metal barrel would, I think. It does have an eraser but it is not obvious, it's under the metal button in the cap. I submitted a photo but I'm not sure whether Amazon will add it. 4A well engineered and constructed mechanical pencil surpassed expectations. I love this item!I'm a visual thinker and always like to keep a pencil not a pen with me at all times. The problem is that I carry them with me in my cargo shorts so the non-retractable pencils jab me and the retractable pencils are cheap junk...then I found this. Where have you been all of my life? Seriously, this is the perfect pencil for me. The weight is substantial compared to the plastic throwaway pencils and it has a nice enameled (?) finish that adds to its beauty and tactile appeal. No more jabs during notes as the half of the pencil with the clip and lead feeder comes off to protect the nib. This makes the pencil more compact. As I am writing this I am tempted to purchase a couple more they are that good. 5Best pencil I own with a few annoyances (edited)I love this pencil! I am a budding stationery addict, and I ve heard nothing but good things about this pencil. I use it all the time, and it s honestly a 5 star pencil, but the tip of the pencil I recieved is kinda bent in, making the lead come out really slowly. It also breaks the lead quite often, which gets slightly annoying. The first isn t bad but the constantly breaking led is very annoying and hinders my writing, that s why I have it at 3 stars. Despite this, I still love this pencil.Edit: Contacted Pentel warranty and they sent me a replacement pencil tip at no cost. Took a little bit to get here, but the tip works perfectly and my pencil no longer breaks. Now it s 5 stars! 5
