Customer Reviews

AbysmalWhile I love the color temperature and the 60' beam spread, I cannot recommend these bulbs. I purchased these bulbs to replace Satco S8971 bulbs that were failing due to intermittent operation. It appeared that the thermal shutdown feature of the bulbs would cycle the bulbs on/off even at the dimmest setting. This behavior would get worse over the lifetime of the bulb, ultimately forcing replacement. Most (but not all) of the S8971 bulbs would last for a couple of years before beginning to fail -- a far cry from the idealistic 25,000 hours and often not even meeting the 3yr warranty.I finally decided to replace the remaining S8971 bulbs, and after failing to find a competing warm temperature bulb with 60' beam spread, I decided to take a chance on the newer (and cheaper) S9435. After receiving and installing the replacement bulbs, I was very satisfied with the results. The temperature and beam spread was perfect. The light output was great, with slightly brighter maximum output (950lm@13W) than the S8971 (860lm@14W). The S9435 didn't dim as far, but the dimming performance was still acceptable for my application which is recessed lighting in a home theater (70'F ambient temperature).Unfortunately, after only one week of use, ALL of the new bulbs are already failing in the same manner as the roughly 3-year-old S8971s. My home theater is flashing like a Christmas tree! It is time to start looking for an alternate supplier. My three year experiment with Satco must finally come to an end.1Right Light, Right SizeFinally, LED Par20 warm white lamps that are sized like the halogen originals to fit my Broan range hood without sticking out. They also work perfectly with the Broan three-position lamp dimmer. Very pleased, as I like to leave my range hood lamps on throughout the evening to help illuminate the entire cook top, backsplash cooking utensil rack, and adjacent countertops. The 40' beam spread is ideal for this. The only unanswered question is longevity, as these will need to function for a good number of years to justify their cost vs. electricity saved.5Good but not perfect by any meansUnlike a lot of PAR LED bulbs, where the manufacturers are just making up specs, this bulb is mostly true to specs with some faults. This is rated 13W for 950lm, and, although I didn't measure power consumption, the output is accurate, and the foot candles/lux I measured are reasonably close to the ones on the box which are 520 lux at 5 feet and 370 lux at 6.5 feet (center of beam). Overall, this light has much higher output than other PAR30 bulbs, so this is good. The beam angle is rated as 40 degrees, and I measured a little less around 35 degrees. This is reasonably true-to-spec but I expected them to be wider like the larger PAR38 bulbs which, while also being spec'ed at 40 degrees, are WAY off at around 110 degrees. The angle makes a huge difference, and these are very tight -- getting into a very narrow flood or wide spot. Again, MOST LED bulbs are totally off in the angle which is a major error in output. At around 35 degrees, the width of the cone of light is only about half as how high it is. Do not expect broad illumination from this bulb. The color temp of 3000K, I would say is fairly accurate. I am a lighting geek, and I have more lights than I care to admit. Also, the CRI of 80 is believable as the color rendering is nothing special and a little on the green side. I definitely prefer the higher CRIs over 90. Note that many bulbs I've found that list over 90 CRI are fake. They are not.So, I take a star off for having the very rare case of a beam narrower than specified which I was not expecting and for the so-so CRI. I do whack another full star off because, in reality, these are not dimmable. Sure, they dim, but they are VERY noisy. I couldn't stand the buzz that they make.3Incredible lightsPurchased these bulbs that fit into pendant spotlights for two reasons. One is that I was worried about an expensive oil painting that was being highlighted with an equivalent Halogen pendant spotlight and my fear was the heat was drying this original painting out and then the other was of course energy savings halogen vs LED. Well I researched alot the bulb size, color, wattage and such and came up with these and I am so impressed with them. 2700-3000k gave me the exact light I was wanting. I cannot recall the lumens but these must be about 850lm. I was skeptical so I bought only 1 of these though I needed 6 more. Tried it for a few days and they were exactly what was stated and matched my needs perfectly. The oil painting is breathing a sign of relief and my energy bill is thanking me too. I would definitely recommend.5A perfect replacement for PAR 30 halogensI had been looking for a long time to find a PAR 30 short neck with enough lumens to replace the 75 watt halogens in my track lighting. These are a perfect match - 40-degree beam spread, 2700K color temperature, and they even exceed the lumens of a 75 watt halogen PAR 30. The product description says 950, but the package the bulbs come in says 1000 lumens. And get this - the box says these are the equivalent of a 50 watt bulb. But they far exceeded the brightness and performance of a 75 watt halogen. One note - these are ever-so-slightly longer than a standard short neck (SN), by maybe around 0.25 inch. These should fit any SN application (my track fixtures are a gimbal ring with a pretty tight fitting and they worked just fine). In the end, these 13 watt LED PAR 30's easily replace a 75 watt halogen PAR 30, resulting in 82% less energy used, lower heat gain, and a longer life space (the product claims over 22 years at 3 hours service per day). My hope is that I never have to change them again.5Very Slight Flicker & Very Poor Quality Control I ordered 2 of these bulbs for my GE Profile range hood. (I would think that GE wouldn't have a cheap dimmer in their products.) But one bulb flickered very noticeably, when dimmed. The other has a very slight flicker, when dimmed. In fact, it's almost imperceptible and I've decided that I can live with it. More on the flicker, in a moment.I returned the badly flickering bulb, for replacement. But the replacement bulb arrived completely inoperable. So what this means is that, out of 3 bulbs, two had problems.I just received the 4th bulb and put it into the socket. It appears to work, albeit with the same almost imperceptible flicker of the first good bulb. So if we say that the almost imperceptible flicker is acceptable, this all suggests a 50% failure rate (2 out of 4). Not exactly exemplary quality control. So let's talk about the almost imperceptible flicker. This bulb is advertised as "dimmable". Bulbs that flicker, when dimmed, are not considered "dimmable". So you may consider this very slight flicker to be a show stopper. But with the two best bulbs of the four in place, the flicker is only noticeable, when you are very close to the light and whatever you are looking at is close to the light. I was able to get a video that showed the flicker, using the original bad bulb. But try as I might, I have not been able to get a video to show the almost imperceptible flicker that I'm talking about, with the two best bulbs in place.I have included a video that shows the flicker in the bulb that was returned. In order to capture the flicker on video, it required that I place my hand near the bulb and shoot close up. But doing that shows a significant flicker.I have not noticed the audible buzz that some people have noticed.Pros: Very bright. White light (4000K) shows true color of food on stovetop. Exact shape of original PAR20 halogen bulb. Great (wide) beam angle for range hood.Cons: Very Poor Quality Control. Almost imperceptible flicker, when dimmed. The dimmed light is much brighter than expected (brighter than the halogen on full brightness). Conclusion:The two bulbs that barely flicker are acceptable, since the flicker is only noticeable very close up and I almost never have anything very close up, above the range. Furthermore, when I do hold something close to those lights, I usually have the lights on bright. So, now that I have 2 lights that work well enough, I suppose I'll keep them. OTOH, I'll probably be looking to replace them, when I can find better bulbs.Sadly, this is not a bulb that I would normally associate with Satco quality.3These buzz too w/ cheaper LED dimmers - how to fix - otherwise the closest to halogen I have found.I had read some people having buzzing issues with the Satco LEDs when used with dimmers . These were no different. When I put them on a non dimming switch they don't buzz. It turns out you have to use an "electronic low voltage dimmer" to resolve this problem with the Satco bulbs. Guess what? Those dimmers cost more than double most LED compatible dimmers.Good news? I have tried six different brands/models, and the Satco bulbs and LEDs themselves seem to mimic Halogen bulbs the closest, well except for the spread on the beam, which is far too wide. The specs I am using are 2700K color temp, 800 lumens+ and 35-60 degree field. These are night and bright, have a great color and dim well, but that damn buzzing is loud enough to hear even when mounted high in a ceiling. If I owned my home I would invest in better dimmers.Good: mimic halogen appearance and color closelyAnother bad thing is these bulbs get pretty hot, much hotter than an other LED PAR30 bulbs I tested.Bad: Buzzing without ELV, beam angle is far too wide, even wider than 60 degrees. Oddly their 40' model is exactly the same, these are hot compared to other LEDs, but not as hot as halogens.I cannot say much about how long these things last. I only tested one. It buzzed so it goes back.If you don't use dimmers these look better than all the GE, Philips and off brand LEDs I have found.3Bulb fails, base burns...Have a kitchen ceiling full of these LED lamps----- over the past year, two have failed, apparently in the same way: First, you smell burning plastic, then the light goes out. Removal of the bulb from socket reveals a spot of burnt plastic-- looks like a brown blister. Not sure if these lamps are safe?????These are rather specialized LEDs-- would advise finding another brand for your own needs....UPDATE-- Had a third bulb fail....(3/8)...tested a Hyperion offering which is less money, but bought them only to assess longevity. The Hyperion bulb looks and feels cheap, but more importantly, it does not evenly disperse light--sent these back to Amazon. SO--think the Satco offering may be the only show in town for this niche product worth using. Will, unfortunately, buy spare bulbs and await advances in LED lighting....1A really terrific bulb with a very short lifeThis is the first time I have tried a bulb with a 60 degree beam spread. The first night I used this bulb in my outdoor security/flood light fixtures, I was super excited at just how much of my yard one single bulb covered and how bright it was. Loved the fact that it was dimmable as well as wet rated. About a week after I received it, I loved it so much that I ordered two more.BUT, much to my surprise this evening I went out to my backyard and noticed how dark it seemed in one area. I went over to the fixture for that part of the yard and my new bulb was completely out. I turned the lights off and tried to screw the bulb in a little more, and it was obviously in all the way. Jiggled it a little and nothing. Put another bulb in and it lit right up, which tells me the problem was with the bulb. It's been just under 3 weeks since I installed this bulb and I can't tell you how disappointed I am. The bulb has maybe 20 hours on it max. I'm now curious to see if the other two I ordered will fail as quickly.1Check your specs carefully before purchase!Unfortunately, I cannot comment on such things as brightness and longevity, because I find I am unable to use these bulbs with my dimmer/track light configuration. I have philips, cree and other par 30 and par 38 led bulbs in recessed cans and on tracks, with wall mounted dimmers; but chose the Satco par 30 short neck, 2700 soft white, 60 beam option for closet/dressing room overhead lighting.I received the 40 beam version, but that s somewhat beside the point, as these Satco bulbs will not work with my dimmers. Perhaps a spec sheet would have told me that, but as I have similar led lighting on the same dimmers all over the house, I assumed there wouldn t be an issue.I will use these where a dimmer is not required; but it s still a bit of a disappointment; and if there really is a 60 flood option, I sure haven t seen it in prior purchases of halogen or led par 30 bulbs; and if such a bulb truly exists, it wasn t delivered to me. Sure, I could try an exchange, but for two light bulbs? Not worth the trouble.3
