Love this! Wish I'd bought it sooner!Okay, it is VERY expensive for a trash can and who "LOVES" a trash can, anyway? Well, I do to my surprise. The butterfly lid opens completely and easily stays open if you're working over the top. It does NOT allow odors to escape which was my big concern. The plastic inside can/liner is very easy to lift out and replace with any bag from Costco or Walmart so you don't need to buy the expensive SimpleHuman bags. The outside does seem to stay cleaner and doesn't show fingerprints. This is just so much easier to use, to empty and to replace the bag than my old kitchen trash can that I am only sorry I didn't buy one much sooner! 5Great can for keeping dogs out!Love this can. It s very large and I finally found something to keep my large dog out! I used regular large kitchen trash bags in it. I did like the sample bags they sent, but think they re too expensive. I will probably buy a second can for recycling. It keeps the smells in the can. 5Perfect for dog owners!We purchased this in the hopes of keeping our two golden retrievers out of the trash can. One of them had figured out how to lift the lid on our previous can using his snout. I am pleased to report that this trash can is EXCELLENT!!! I feel kind of ridiculous doing an online review for a trashcan... but it's just that good.The can is designed nicely with vent holes in the bottom so the bag never gets suctioned in. Instead, the bags are super easy to remove! There's also a little shelf you can set the interior can on to tip it up and make it that much easier to remove/change out the bags. Most importantly, the top flaps remain flat so my dog can't get into the trash.I purchased a bunch of the simplehuman bags that are designed to go with the can, and they do make it worth the extra $. The fit snugly and easily. I wanted no chance of the dogs getting in... besides, the cost of the can and bags is still less than the vet bill would be for removing chicken bones out of my dog's stomach (which is the direction in which we were headed).Worthwhile purchase! 5Sorry Dogs.. !! No More trash for you!!I would never in a million years thought i would spend this much money on a trash can.. but I have to say it was well spent money. No more lifting the trash can high.. so the dogs cant get in or knock it over. Ive left the can in place for a week now.. and have had no incidents. And the specialty liners that came with the can are so great.. I've been cheating myself for a long time with the cheaper ones. We've had it 18 months and it has stood up to 4 kids and 2 German Shepherds.I originally purchased this trash can 01 March 2018 based on ratings and reviews stating it held up to large dogs.The body is surprisingly slim yet holds the maximum amount of trash that will fit in a 13 gallon trash bag. (Our tribe generates quite a bit!) It is very sturdy without inconveniently heavy to move and clean behind - definitely tip proof, which is quite the engineering feat. It does get smudgy pretty quickly but they do come off easily and it IS stainless steel so that's expected.Today I was pretty bummed to come home and find the lid stuck in an open position and remnants of a trash feast scattered across the living room. One of my dogs figured out how to step on the pedal and must have somehow broken the mechanism because the lid was stuck in a fully open position.Assuming it had met its end at the paws of a German Shepherd, I got on Amazon to find a different can. When looking at the specs to make sure I got one with the same capacity, I noticed the 10 year guarantee. Even though we'd put it through some rough use, I thought I'd give it a shot so I called Simplehuman.For starters, the first option menu included reaching an operator. You never get that anymore without pressing 0 like a monkey on crack hoping it will eventually go through. An operator answered after two rings, was incredibly pleasant and immediately put me through to the correct department. Yes, a live operator and the CORRECT department on the first try. I was already beyond impressed.The customer service representative was friendly and very helpful. Turns out the can has a locking option to hold the doors open and somehow my dog managed to slide the bar into the lock position. He explained how to unlock it and the lid is still fully functioning.This trash can is impressive in many ways, has lived up to all it's claims and the company provides a level of customer service that is hard to find these days.In sum - buy it! You won't regret it. 5One word: "Ugh."After having this for a year and a half I can honestly say I regret getting this. I thought I did my research and really believed this would be a good investment, but it has not met all of my needs. The amount it holds is fantastic and the design looks nice, no complaints there. However, it is a little more struggle than necessary to take out the inner part to change bags and right now I'm having physical difficulties so I'm forced to ask other people to help me take out my trash (really not fun). But my biggest problem is the little gap between the two sides of the lid. I thought it would come together snugly or have some sort of seal based on how people were describing it but I've found that to be not true at all. The Feng Shui was not good. I finally decided that the best thing to do was take out a row of cabinets under the counter top and put the trash can there. I looked at the pull-out trash cans (https://amazon.com/Rev-Shelf-RV-18KD-18C-Pull-Out-Container/dp/B000VTRKOE), but was disappointed with the size; I wanted a full trash can. I looked at the trash cans with wheels but they had a sensor, were too high when the lid opened, and/or were cheap feeling and looking (https://amazon.com/simplehuman-40-Liter-Slim-Plastic-Step/dp/B004L9L3KW; https://www.amazon.com/iTouchless-Control-Automatic-Optional-Stainless/dp/B07H8RKR1N).This SimpleHuman butterfly trashcan was "almost there." It fit under the cabinet, was quality, and the black steel matched my black cabinets. However, it needed to roll out to be worth a darn when throwing out large items and when changing the trash bag. I wanted to find wheels for it, but I knew the wheels could not lift the can much at all without making the foot peddle cause the can to tip.My solution was to remove the rubber feet and put in some drop-in NMBT-5/8CS nylon bearing wheels (https://smile.amazon.com/NMBT-5-Solid-Machined-Ball-Transfer/dp/B0056JHPI0/ (search KieTek for better price)) held tightly with Sugru (https://amazon.com/Sugru-Moldable-Glue-Original-Formula/dp/B00EU7DBNM/). I then got a stick-on handle (https://amazon.com/gp/product/B00IYTE3NO/), spray painted it black, and--voila--I have a great solution.Hope I showed the way to anyone considering the same problem. 5
