VERY Poor design - additional parts needed Demerits for a product that did work as expected, yet needs and extra switch cover (at additional price) to work conveniently. As mentioned in other reviews, the wired main switch unit oddly has a small button for its switch - while the remote unit looks and operated like a conventional decor switch, and simply surface mounts to any wall without an electrical box or wiring (as described). The available extra switch covers do not match the design of the remote unit, nor any conventional switch design. I (begrudgingly) ordered the need "Snap on a decorative cover (Model TM-001) on the opening of the Wall Switch receiver (sold separately) for a stylish look." only to receive a defective unit - missing the essential mechanical piece which pushes the ON?OFF button on the base unit. As a professional designer, I was take aback by the complexity of the add-on decorative cover, which: A. should have been included, B. could (should) have consisted of 2 simple parts (or just one - if they were very clever), C. the included instruction are in error as there is clearly an up and down direction to the cover - ignored by the instructions, and essential to correct installation. The actual decorative cover is very oddly complex - in the worst tradition of German engineering, most like copied from something else.This is a "what were they thinking" moment in product design. This leaves me with Zero incentive to purchase any other products from this company. 18 Months of Use - Some issues, but resolved I bought this in September of 2016. It worked pretty well at first, there was maybe .5 to 1 second delay of light turning on. It also worked most of the time. After a couple months, it started working less and less, I would hit the switch and nothing would happen. Finally, I read other reviews about this and tried to reprogram it (not needed) and other things. One electrician mentioned they have an older style metal box that this is housed in and that this was interfering with the signal. I took my metal receiver plate off and took the antenna out and let it hang out, the switch started working perfectly! I did some trial and error with where to put the antenna wire of the receiver, it was previously tucked into the box (not ideal), it is now outside of the box but behind the metal face plate cover, it is working much better.Pros:Works with Incandescent, CFL, and LED bulbs (I tried all 3 and it works with each).Great if you live in an older home where a room has no 3 way switch.Can Install the transmitter (the new switch portion) with sticky pads (included) or with wall anchors / screws. I chose to use wall anchors and screws.Uses a CR2032 battery, battery life still working, I cant imagine this uses much energy.I'm only using one of these, so I dont have any issues with interference from multiple 3way wireless switches.A lot cheaper and timely than having an electrician run wires (wasn't possible to run wires in my situation without ripping out a floor ).Cons:Transmitter switch and faceplate could look more professional to other switches you could buy, this doesnt really bother me though.The receive portion is very large so it could be a tight fit in existing switch box. I'm using mine with one other switch (double box) and it was very tight fit, took some time to get it to fit.Worked intermittently, but seemed to have fixed that once I learned about the metal box disrupting the antenna.Overall:I would buy again if needed, the price is reasonable, and while I've had some issues, the cost of this was worth it once I got it to work reliably vs paying hundreds and redoing a floor or wall to have a proper wiring configured. 4Works well, good range, easy install The remote switch is thin enough to add it to regular switch gangs without cutting into the wall. The clear plastic backing plate is too wide to fit next to other switches without cutting away about 1/4" of the plate. I just screwed the remote Skylink switch to the cover plate and the plate to two adjacent switches. If I ever want to move it, I can put the two switch plate back on with no wall holes to patch. There is a time delay of about a second from when the switch is thrown to when the master switch turns on or off the light. I never saw a reference to the type of battery used in the product description. As you can see in the photos, it is a button battery, will be interesting to see how long it lasts in normal use.==========Update after 3 years of use: Still working well and have not even changed the button battery in the remote switch yet. Switch got a lot of use taking the dog out for walks at night. This has been an excellent product.==========At 3 years and 8 months the 2032 battery voltage dropped enough so the remote would intermittently not operate the master switch. That is not bad considering how much this remote gets used. 5Works as Advertised and Then Some Purchased a different brand of remote wireless switch some years ago to put a second light switch for the outside lights on each side of the garage door in a much more convenient location. It never worked satisfactorily. The remote wireless switch was unreliable and intermittent at best, often requiring repeated actuation. In addition, the main receiver switch did not take kindly to power saving CFLs.By stark contrast, the Skylink SK-8 with WE-001 receiver and TB-318 wall mount wireless remote switch work perfectly. I now have what I had wanted years ago, a (working) light switch for the exterior garage door lights located at the door from the house to the garage where there should have been a second switch installed when the house was built. Running Romex and adding a second toggle switch was much more work than I wanted to tackle given the location of the exterior lights (plural) on a brick wall and the location of the switch for them that was put in when the house was built. Bought together, the WE-001 and TB-318 are preprogrammed to work together without having to sync them. Also bought a TM-318 remote separately and synced it on the first try without any problems. It helps immensely reading the instructions for both the WE-001 and the remote switch before attempting to pair them, and then following them to the letter. I'm mystified why others complained about syncing/pairing problems in their reviews. Once I read the instructions a couple times, it was child's play and worked perfectly. I will update this review, if there is any change in its operating reliability. So far it's working perfectly. 5Excellent Concept But Buzzy, Awkward, And Useless Customer Service Exactly the functionality I was looking for, unfortunately it was not well executed. I replaced a standard dimmer switch that was working fine. I simply wanted it for the remote switch. This switch buzzes quite loudly when the lights are dimmed (not the bulbs, the actual switch). I contacted costumer support. After about 3 days someone responded and said that it will buzz if the wattage is above the 300 watt limit, which I was already aware of. I responded to the email, stating that it controlled 4x60 watt bulbs which is only 240 watts total, and I also unscrewed 2 bulbs to test it with only a 120 watt load. It has been over a week and have heard no response.We have this switch in our bedroom and the little blue lights that light up when off are annoyingly bright at night. I don't think there is a way to turn them off.It is a bit complicated to set up. I don't have much trouble with this kind of stuff, but I could see a less tech savvy person struggling.The main wired switch is strangely designed and quite ugly if you ask me.There is a bit of a delay when using the remote transmitter switch. Not terrible.The dimming feature on the transmitter is kind of clunky. You have to push pretty hard and it feels like it;s going to break the switch.I could probably live with most of the quirks, but the buzzing is pretty annoying, and if costumer service is just going to ignore me, then I'm going to return it and look for something better. 1ON and OFF positions keep changing - confusing Works to some extent. What they don't tell you is that the remote switch has TWO switches in both upper and lower positions. If you touch the switch paddle lightly it works fine (goes On/Off). However, if you tap the paddle or press firmly, it activates the second switch which programs the unit to be ON in that position from then on. So if you press the Upper paddle firmly, it becomes the ON position. If you press the Lower paddle firmly, that becomes the ON position. So the On position keeps changing - sometimes up, sometimes down! Not a good feature! And this is NOT even mentioned in the instructions! I thought mine was broken until I figured out what it was doing. You have to touch the switch gently or it will mess up!Also the instructions tell you to see the section on the transmitter to erase all programming, but the transmitter section tells you nothing! Could be a good product, but has design problems! 3This unit needs to be re-engineered they need to have felt safe protocols and better components. I also do not like the fact ... Had to send it back because it quit working after five minutes. The second one I got worked all the way up until the day we had the electrical inspection the inspector found it not to be working quite embarrassing. Sent it back and got my money back.This has a clear box around it inside the box you could see one of the capacitors was completely burned up. This unit needs to be re-engineered they need to have felt safe protocols and better components. I just installed the SK-8, and I can't decide whether I am happy that it works so well, or angry because the kit is not complete. First, I used the more expensive Skylinehome unit to replace the Levitton unit that I bought earlier and really didn't like. I've expressed my opinion of that switch under its description. Installation of the Skylinehome SK-8 kit was as advertised by Amazon, and the switch worked flawlessly. The remote switch is the typical rocker type switch, and works easily and reliably. But then, I found that the wired switch is just as shown on Amazon's description (nothing wrong with that), and it is not easy to operate because you have to push the small button in the upper center where the rocker panel should be. Because these are garage light switches, you don't want to have to stop and find the right place to carefully put your finger to activate the switch. So, I went to the web site of Skylinkhome and found that there is indeed a cover for the wall switch; a cover that converts it to the recognizable decorator style toggle switch. That will make it look finished, and I have no idea why it is not included in the kit. If Amazon does not carry the cover for the wall switch (TM-002), it is available from Smarthome.com. Of course, I ordered the cover, but I wonder if anyone at Amazon knows that the cover is separate?I definately am glad that I ordered the kit, and it seems to work great, but really, people! Who's in charge of checking out the stuff you are selling to customers?If you have a need to comvert a switch to a 3-way, you definately should order this switch. Just don't forget to order the cover, so your wife won't keep asking why you didn't finish the job. 3Perfect and durable. 7 years of continued use. I am searching for a remote control three-way switch and came upon this switch which is the exact same switch I bought almost 7 years ago, according to the order reminder that appeared on the page from Amazon. I can t believe it s been seven years. Honestly I use this almost every night. My deck lights are wired strangely and the switch is upstairs in the master bedroom. So I wired the transmitter at the switch in the bedroom and use this remote switch down by the back door. Aside from depleted performance during low batteries, this thing is still working great. I have looked over the last few years for LED compatible smart switches that would work the same where I can control my backyard spotlights that are motion sensored. I haven t been able to find anything yet that has the remote switch and that works as well as this switch. Sure, it is not a typical rocker that you may be used to, the on off clicker is strange, the on off is not always in the same position, the transmitter switch is just a button with a blue light, but it has been durable and it has been great for me for my specific use. 7 years of use. On those grounds it s worth 5 stars. Im a big fan of durable products that do what I bought them to do. 5Get something else! I have put in no less than 3 (pairs) of these things. Rather than go through the blow-by-blows of the problems I ran into, I will summarize. But first, I will say that I am both a practicing electrician and an electrical engineer, with quite a bit of experience in spec'ing, designing, manufacturing, and installing comparable microcomputer-based gizmos. I am a very qualified reviewer.Okay, here's a list, most egregious problems first:1. It's unreliable - AT BEST it works a little over half of the time. That is positively weird and definitely unacceptable. I can't figure out why so many people put up with that, except maybe they are so grateful not to run wires to the remote that they put up with anything. It's certainly not a range thing, the radio bits work fine, and putting the transmitter near the receiver changes absolutely nothing.2. It is susceptible to mystery changes - degradations - in performance. ESD? (That is, static discharge.) Firmware? Probably both. My last set stopped working completely after a month or so.3. Reprogramming, or more importantly resetting back to what should be default behavior, is bewildering, and I would venture nearly impossible for the average installer or user. My guess is that the firmware is so faulty that the instructions are conveniently vague (awful) so you blame yourself instead of them for not making it work.4. Reprogramming can be necessary if (God forbid) you press the little red button on the switch/transmitter even once by accident. The button should be recessed (so you can only press it with a ball point pen, for example), but go figure. Also, the little protruding button makes it problematic to use any ordinary switch plate, as it can be depressed - with disastrous results - by ordinary mounting.5. The physical switch design is full of unnecessarily stupid features. In addition to the little red button, it has: a. Too wide a footprint, so you can't mount it next to other switches using standard multi-gang wall plates. (Even if you wanted to use two SK8's!) b. Blinking red LEDs that mean... well something, maybe. Certainly not "working" or "fault" or anything else logical. Junk ergonomics. c. A momentary switch in the ON position of the Decora-style rocker that toggles off if it gets pressed again. Or ON, sometimes. The switch under the OFF position has less impact on anything. d. A crummy little white mylar film under the Decora rocker substituting for the whole thing being molded white (or Almond, brown, etc.)Why go on? I have recently had very good luck replacing these things with something from Leviton, a "Basic Wireless Light Switch", p/n E3K-A11WH. More expensive - almost $100, but if you value your time and sanity, go with that. There might be other worthwhile alternatives, but my Amazon browsing didn't find anything less expensive.Very frustrating, this SkyLink product could be much improved.WLS 1
