Customer Reviews

Hard water stains etched into faceplate. We have had this model for a couple of years and now have hard water stains etched into the faceplate. It must be made of a lower quality metal than the body which was not affected. I've tried the vinegar soak as mentioned in the manual but metal is permanently damaged. This should not occur for this price. Otherwise, it's a great showerhead. 2Just buy it, like right now. Don't even read this review - just buy it. Ok so you didn't take my advice... so be it. This thing is amazing. I nearly bought one for every member of my family. I did NOT take out the flow restrictor, even though I tried and failed. After using it for a few months now, I think the flow rate is more than enough for me and I am very, very, very picky. We have a small shorty hot water heater in our apartment and this thing will drain it in 20 mins, thats a pretty damn high rate shower head - seems much higher rate then 2.5 gpm but who knows.Ok so how is it? This thing is intense, I mean very intense on the "intense" setting. I actually have to take a break from it some times and set the lever to rainfall or whatever the less intense setting is. Oh intense though, it's so powerful it mist-ifies (probably not a word?) the water, there's literally mist everywhere, so much so that your entire body is washed even if the shower spray is only directed at your back. It also instantly steams up the entire shower, forget about being able to see out any glass doors or partitions - you will def need a squeegee too. Overall, I genuinely think this product has improved my life, I am very exciting to take showers now and I feel dorky saying this but I feel like a king using this thing-and conversly a peasant if I ever have to use an inferior shower head. I may even pack it with my luggage if I have to be away for a while. If feel sorry for the countless millennia humanity has had to endure without a shower head like this - ha. 5Excellent quality & super-good flow with tiny mod I experienced the Speakman Anystream in several fine hotels, and was truly impressed with the flow rate & soothing feel of its water stream. It recently came time to replace an also-excellent Moen shower head, so I went with a Speakman Anystream (polished brass). The shower head is beautiful, heavy brass construction and absolutely simple to install. The only question, as debated & commented on in several reviews, was whether to remove the small o-ring flow restrictor as well as remove the little plastic plate that the o-ring is seated on. Removing the o-ring without damage looks (& is) simple -- just use very fine needle-nose tweezers or perhaps a toothpick.I first tried the Speakman straight out of the box with no mods. This did not result in the "fine hotel" experience I remembered. I then removed the o-ring; this produced excellent soothing, non-stingy flow... just as I had remembered. Believe me, with this simple non-destructive mod, there's nothing wimpy about the flow rate. I'm not sure who would need more flow, unless their water pressure is just awful. My old Moen shower head had a similar o-ring & plastic seating plate mechanism, so I tried an experiment. First, I removed its o-ring; this improved the flow, but the shower experience was markedly inferior to the Speakman. I then used a surgical retractor to attempt to remove the plastic seating plate in back of the o-ring. The plate promptly broke.Given the excellent performance of the Speakman with its o-ring simply removed (a reversible operation), I would definitely NOT remove the little plastic plate in back of the o-ring. 5Just spend the money -- it's worth it. I had a basic-model Speakman in the 1990s. It was all brass, solid as a rock, simple in design and function, and probably cost about $30 at the time I purchased it. The thing would probably be still working for me, but I tossed it into garage storage when I remodeled the bathroom, and opted for a high-priced, oh-so-fancy, multi-jet shower head from a company I won't mention. When that supposedly indestructible shower head needed to be replaced due to water streaming out the side seam (!), I looked around for my old Speakman. Gone. Probably donated to Goodwill by accident. So I went online and looked for a basic Speakman. Plastic! They are all plastic now. Then I saw this baby, and I was smitten. Old-school quality, even if it does come at a new-age price. I am pleased as can be after installing and using it. The overall design could not be cleaner, the chrome plating is thick and has a gorgeous gloss, the handle moves smoothly and evenly to move through the range of flow. I love the fine spray for most washing, while the "pour" setting is great for rinsing hair. No snazzy bells and whistles here, just a good, solid shower head that should last many years.I think the reviewers complaining of inadequate water pressure may be talking about low water volume, which is a different issue. The strength of the spray this provides is quite good for a low-flow unit. I live in California, where every drop counts.(One nice little detail is that Speakman provides the pipe tape necessary for installation, so don't buy any here, as I did.) 5What you don't know, can hurt you When we started looking for a replacement shower head we had never heard of the Speakman brand, I had replaced our shower head approximately three years ago with a Home Depot mass market Moen. I worked great at first and when ever I cleaned it, but over time it needed cleaning to often and replacement was necessary.I wanted something that would last the test of time, so I started doing my research and the Speakman name keep showing up as a great product. Having never heard of them, I looked to the reviews on Amazon and found one written by TheaterPopcorn. At first I thought, how could anyone get so involved with a review and like a shower head that much. His review convinced me to take the plunge, my wife was about ready to have me committed when I told her the price of this product, but I was convinced this is what we had been looking for all along.Everything in TheaterPopcorns review is true, I was the first to try it out and when I was finished taking my shower my wife wanted to know if it was worth the money. I just told her to take a shower and you be the judge, my wife got in the shower and within twenty seconds I heard a loud OMG!!! TheaterPopcorn kudos to your review and thanks for making me look like a genius. 5OMG!!! OMG!!! OMG!!! Stunning results. I hated my old (fairly new) shower head. Dean Sharp (KFI 640 AM home improvement podcast) recommended this shower head. I live in Michigan (Great Lakes! No water shortages!) so I just wanted good water pressure in shower. I temporarily removed the gravel screen then drilled a small hole through the center of the white nylon water restrictor and then threaded a short drywall screw into hole I made in restrictor. Used pliers and yanked out the water restrictor. Replaced the gravel screen then installed the shower head with teflon tape included. I put electrical tape over the finished thread before tightening onto the pipe so I would not mar the finish. OMG!!! OMG!!! OMG!!! Stunning results. Very easy to adjust from Amazing flow to Ridiculous needlepoint flow. My water bill is very reasonable in Michigan but it is going to go up with this shower head and I am HAPPY to pay more! OMG!!! OMG!!! OMG!!! I could go on and on... 5You re probably just like me desperate to get a nice fulfilling powerful shower. You found it! If you're like me, you reviewed several different brands and researched the different ways that showerheads boost shower pressure using air, compression or whatever. You can stop your research now and just buy this showerhead. It turned our paltry dribbling shower into a heavenly showering revitalizing experience. This shower head is so good that when I went to Home Depot days after and saw someone looking at showerheads, I went over to recommend this one I just couldn t help myself.A couple things to quickly note we have two bathrooms in our apartment and I replaced one with this shower head and one with the S-2252 model with 6 outputs and only 2.0 gallons per second. I also tested both with and without the water restrictor removed (pretty straightforward process to remove the restrictor and you can also find how-to s on YouTube). You should know that once the water restrictor is removed, it s gone for good so it s worth testing without removing in case removing it would be overkill for your liking. The S-2252 increased the water pressure a good amount with the restrictor still in, but it performed like a champ once the restrictor was removed. Without the restrictor, the S-2252 is better than the S-2251 (this model) with the restrictor still in. Once you remove the restrictor from this model, it outperforms the S-2252 due to coverage of the 8 outputs. Luckily, our small children use the second bathroom so the lesser coverage is not an issue for them and the S-2252 is half the cost. I did not find that the 2.5 gallons per minute provided much more pressure than the 2 gallons per minute but I guess it would have more of an impact on the water drop setting where it s less pressure but more water for rinsing out hair. The one caveat I have for my buy now rating is that the shower head is not that flexible. It can flex enough for our needs and for the 45 degree angle pipe from which our showerhead connects, but if you need something that can point to all areas of your shower or the pipe comes out in a way where you need the showerhead to point straight down, there s a chance this isn t a good fit. Other than that, buy now . 5Life Changing Shower Head This shower head crushes anything else I've tried. Last year I stayed at a high end resort, and they had these shower heads. I immediately ordered one when I came home. The amount of water these put out is so much better than any other shower head I have tried. Seriously, you will have no problem getting wet, rinsing off, or just luxuriating under the flow of water as it cascades all over you. My wife used to have a difficult time getting the shampoo rinsed out of her hair, she says this thing does it super fast.If you are worried about saving the planet and conserving resources, this is probably not for you. That said, if you fall into that category, you probably don't take showers, so I suspect you aren't reading this review. For anybody else, BUY THIS PRODUCT. You won't be sorry. I should probably add the caveat that if you have a slow or mildly clogged drain in your shower, this shower head will cause you problems. Call a plumber and get that snaked out, THEN get with the program and order this shower head.Oh yes, and there is a restrictor inside the shower head, so if you want EVEN MORE water, you can take it out. It is a small black o-ring and easy to remove. The output is excellent even before you remove it. Afterwards you might drown yourself, so be warned. 5A far better head for the same money as the big names! My wife and I are building a new house and when we went to the plumbing store to pick out our fixtures, we were shocked to learn just how eye-popping expensive they are! (for legitimate name-brand fixtures - not the cheap, plastic, dumbed-down versions you get from Lowe's or Home Depot). For example, a shower "set" which includes a temperature control valve, matching spout, drain and shower head, easily cost $350-500! When we priced the components separately, we learned the shower heads alone were $180-300! Yes, these were for brand-named heads, but believe me, there was nothing special about them at all other than they sprayed water! So we started looking at other options. Surely, if we shopped around, we'd be able to find something less expensive, and Amazon has no shortage of cheap showerheads to satisfy a budget-conscious wallet - some even come with rave reviews. But in so many of the reviews we read, folks kept ditching the cheap and going back to their old "Speakman" shower heads they had for years. Never heard of them. So we researched some more. The price was definitely higher than the $30 ones we were looking at, but no more than the name-brand ones that were no frills, so we decided to take a chance and bought one to try out, keeping Amazon's generous return policy at the forefront of our minds. When it arrived, I installed it in my wife's shower (yes, we have separate showers, but only because there's no room for both of our stuff in our small bathroom, hence the new house). The next day I tried it out and wasn't just pleasantly surprised, I was completely blown away! This thing was heaven on a shower supply arm!First, it exudes quality from the moment you pick it up. It's weighs in at almost five hefty pounds and when you screw it on to your shower arm, you'll recognize the difference immediately. It's metal constructed all around, including the outer housing, so it's literally built to last a lifetime! Installation took all of 3 minutes. Just unscrew the old head, wrap some (included) Teflon tape around the threads of the shower arm then screw on the Speakman, hand tighten and you're done! It comes equipped with a 2.5 gallon per minute (gpm) limiter installed standard, though if you don't think that's enough water for you, you can simply reach into the supply coupler with your finger tips and pull it out. Just be warned that you'll at least double your water consumption with it out, which sounds awesome in principle, but you'll also drain your water heater in no time.Second, the shower experience itself is just incredible and thoroughly satisfying. Each of the eight nozzles creates eight small streams (for a total of 64) that create a wide, overlapping, criss-cross pattern to the shower and massage you all over! And you can adjust them from a fine, sharp stream, all the way down to "flood" mode which gently gushes aerated water all over you - like you're standing under a hot waterfall. Really, it's something that's a little difficult to describe, it just has to be experienced. Some reviewers have said that it didn't seem to increase their water "pressure." Well folks, water pressure isn't solely determined by your shower head, it's mostly determined by the water pressure control valve for your home - located somewhere close to where the main water line enters your house. If you think your water pressure is too low, try giving that an adjustment first (a tiny tweak can make a huge difference). I can tell you that for us, we went from a 2.5gpm name-brand head that did virtually nothing but put out the thinnest, most insignificant bit of water, to this head which, when it puts out 2.5gpm FEELS like you're getting far more. I'm half tempted to remove the 2.5gpm limiter just to see the difference, but even with it solidly in place, the shower experience far exceeded my expectations and is nothing short of stellar!! Even when I'm in a hurry, it's hard to draw myself away and get out of the shower! It's so relaxing, it's like the shower has some mesmerizing hold over me.After several days of hearing my wife rave about it, and having only experienced it the one time myself, I decided I needed one in my shower too so we ordered a second one and I have no regrets, only accolades. We're keeping the old heads in the cabinet under the sink so after we move and sell the place, we can easily put the old ones back and take the Speakman's with us to the new house.Pro's+ Built to last a lifetime. Could easily be the last shower head you ever buy. Seriously!+ Shower experience is hands-down, the best, most luxurious I've ever had at home (except for maybe a few spa experiences)+ 2.5gpm limiter is easily removed with your finger tips, providing for an even greater shower experience (if that's possible).Con's- My quick, 5-7 minute showers have become 20-25 minute shower "experiences" (or at least until the hot water runs out, whichever comes first)- My wife and I can't shower at the same time anymore. One of us just has to wait until the water heater fully replenishes.- I'm now consistently 15 minutes late to most everything in the morning.Bottom line: Run, don't walk, but run to your computer and order one of these! They really are as fantastic as most of us reviewers say they are, and it really will change your shower routine for the better. I know, you're hesitant because they are a bit on the pricey side, yes. But again, they're no more than what you'd pay for a big-name shower head from a legit plumbing store, and not a bad price at all when you consider this really could be the last shower head you ever buy.Oh! And don't forget to wash behind your ears! 5Lots of pressure, responsive jet lever, beautiful. For most people, myself included, lots of water pressure in a shower is one of life's great joys. When it's down to a trickle, or the jets are too thin, I just want to get it out. With this in mind, we were doing some bathroom remodeling in the house and considered purchasing some high end shower heads that promised to be everything we could possible ask for. But they fell flat, literally. So I decided to go back to Speakman, this time the 8-jet polished chrome model. Not only is this a beautiful piece of solid - and quite heavy - metal, but it's performance exceeds expectations. I did, however, remove the flow restrictor in the unit just to make sure I got all the pressure I wanted, and it worked perfectly. The master bathroom in the house is very high-end with accents of chrome, glass and polished concrete, and despite the fact that it's less expensive than many of the "luxury" shower heads on the market falling into the $500.00 and up category, this one stands head and shoulder above the rest. Highly recommend. 5
