Customer Reviews

One Star It broke just after 2 time use. Blades completely came out at second time of use. 1Total garbage...and not actually this brand when you get it This thing is a piece of junk. I've had it for three months and only used it occasionally, but it broke during normal use today. One of the blade pieces just popped off. I should have returned it when I first got it because the item I actually received does not have the Vidalia Chop Wizard name on it anywhere. (see photos) I thought maybe they just changed the look, but now I suspect otherwise. I think they filled the order with a cheaper, junkier version. 1Vidalia Chop Wizard; another As Seen on TV item! BUYER BEWARE! This is a Made in China plastic item which requires forced downward pressure to effectively dice half-cut onions or other vegetables. This required force of the top-cover can cause the plastic hinge-stud on the rear of the clear base to break off while properly following directions for use. This is a poor quality item when necessary downward forced pressure is applied! Some may say, avoid too much downward pressure when using; but what you get is half-diced vegetables stuck between the square-pattern cutting blades. 1A Great Kitchen tool. Since I cook a lot and chop a lot, I got this figuring it was just a waste of money but worth a try. After all, these are "Made for TV." Was I wrong. If you chop onions, peppers, or other veggies as I do almost every day, it seems impossible that anything could do the job. This device chops onions very well. Not as fine as one can hand chop, of course, since there are only two blades. But for quite uniform, unbelievably fast chopping (a medium sized Vidalia onion takes about a minute), try this out. I never minded chopping and find it kind of therapeutic at times, but when people are waiting for dinner, this gets the job done. I've had this almost a year and it looks new despite almost daily use. Cleans very fast if you don't lose the cleaning tool!! The one thing that requires a little mastery is that it won't chop uniform sizes unless you pay a little attention to how you set up the onion portion you are chopping. A little experience and it becomes automatic. 5Favorite tool in the kitchen I love to cook for my family, but I am the worst onion cutter on the face of the planet. Literally. Like awful. It's embarrassing actually. In fact, I'm so ashamed of my onion cutting abilities, or lack thereof, that I've even tried to hide it from my husband of 15 years (who also loves to cook by the way) by suggesting nicely "hey, babe, ya mind cutting up that onion for me while I (insert made up excuse here)?".My cut up onion always results in my crying. From both the onion itself (hate that!) and the always end result of my hacked up sad, ugly onion being different shapes and sizes, widths and lengths. Sort of like how no two snowflakes are the same.Like I could teach kids their shapes with my onions. This is a square, this is a triangle, this is a rectangle, this is a circle, this is a rhombus, this is a scalene triangle, this is a polygon, this is a trapezoid. The onion can be cut into different pretty shapes on purpose(!) for different meals. Like finely chopped into little cute cubes for tacos or your spinach dip, or medium sized cubes for your omelette, or julienne cut for sausages, or even razor blade thin circles for your salad or medium sized thickness circles for your cheeseburger. I freaking can't do any of them properly. Our 9 year old has even picked up on my incompetent vegetable cutting skills during Taco Tuesday dinners. But, I fear no more as I am the proud owner of the Chop Wizard. Hallelujah. I have proclaimed it to be my favorite best tool in the kitchen. My husband doesn't agree though because his chopping abilities are spectacular and his vegetables always turn out beautiful and the same size and shape and width and length. So now I don't cry anymore while chopping my onions with my handy gadget Chop Wizard. Because #1, they are the same size and shape, width and length and #2 the fumes don't get into my eyes because this thing chops it so fast it doesn't even have enough time to waft into my face, and the catch container helps trap the fumes. The catch container also makes it easy to just take the lid off and dump everything into your pot, pan or bowl.I do recommend you use the larger cutter for your green, yellow, orange, and red peppers because the smaller one kind of just disintegrates the peppers.Yes, sometimes I have to put all my might into pushing this chopper, but it's still quicker than chopping by hand for me. Also, my 9 year old always requests to chop a couple things, as he has a blast doing it.On a side note, I do wish it came with 2 little brushes for cleaning the insert discs... kind of like a mascara brush style... one for the little insert disc and a little bit thicker one to clean larger insert disc. The plastic comb that comes with it cleans the top plastic lid of the chopper wonderfully and easily in my opinion, but the actual cleaning of the metal choppers can be a pain sometimes. Two brushes would help immensely with those or maybe a brush could be attached to the other end of the plastic comb cleaner or something. But to me it's worth the extra time and some hassle washing them because I have some good looking professionally cut veggies, and totally looks like I belong on Top Chef. And yes, this product will break if you put too big of a piece in there and slam it down unevenly. I sadly broke the lid doing just this. But I do use this so often that I've definitely got my money's worth out of it, and it's worth it to me to just purchase another one. 4If mine broke, I would order another one within an hour I use mine every time I cook. It is very sturdy and durable. I have no feeling that it could break because I have used it chopping hard carrots, celery and LOTS of onions. You can chop a large onion quickly, easily and uniformly. As you chop, you can see the measure of the chopped ingredient by turning the Chop Wizard vertically. This saves time and does not dirty up another measuring cup. I use the smaller grate to dice jalapenos and freeze the diced peppers in silicone ice tray cubes for future recipes. I have noticed a lot of people commenting on difficulty cleaning. I use a soap-dispensing dish brush and it works extremely well on both the metal grates and the top part that pushes through the grate. Clean up is a breeze with the little brush. Order your Chop Wizard and a soap dispensing brush at the same time and you'll be in chopping heaven. 5Worst Kitchen Gadget I have ever used. I followed the directions to chop onions as I hate the tears. Well the pieces were small [lots of tears to this stage] and I could not push the top down. I removed some of the onions [more tears here] and still could not make the top go down. Yes the top was correctly placed on its hinges! I put the chop wizard on the floor and stepped on it voila it closed and chopped. I continued this stomping with several tiny batches of onions [many more tears]. And the cleaning was very picky picky [way more tears]. I did try the chop wizard with carrots. I put one layer of 1/8 inch thick slices and had to step on it to get it to close and cut. And again a real picky picky job. I do better putting my cutting board on top of the stove with the exhaust fan running and using a rocker knife to cut the onions. 1Terrible! This broke so quickly! I was very happy with this until the hinge broke after just a handful of uses, although it was passed the Amazon 30 day return window. I contacted the manufacturer directly because I had used it less than 5 times and I assumed this was a rare defect. I received a complete RUN AROUND!. They sent me to another agency who acts as their customer service who then sent me back to the manufacturer. Frustrating to say the least. In the end someone, somewhere reluctantly took my contact info, and I never heard back from anyone. Chop Wizard does not back up its product and they seem to view it as a easily breakable disposable item you replace frequently. Not good for the environment or the pocketbook. 1Don't Buy -- It's Not the Real Vidalia Chop Wizard I don't know how Amazon lets the seller sell this item as the Vidalia Chop Wizard when it really arrives as another product called the Kitchen Pro Dicer. It is not made as well as the Vidalia Chop Wizard. Unfortunately I bought this as a Christmas present for someone (who had seen the real Vidalia Chop Wizard) and I was appalled and embarrassed that it was not the real Vidalia Chop Wizard but a cheaply made product instead. This seller should be put out of business for being so deceptive. Don't buy it! 1So awesome, I bought it four times. But not for the right reasons. :-( GOOD NEWS: I absolutely love this thing! BAD NEWS: I'm now on my fourth Chop Wizard. The first two broke at the hinge, and last night the clear plastic base cracked and a big chunk came off at the rounded end, rendering it useless, so I've just ordered another. Yes, I know I can call and order replacement parts and save a few bucks, but I'm a busy guy, and at $20 I'm starting to view this thing as a disposable commodity that I can't live without. :-)As others have said, it's too bad they don't make a stainless steel version of this. I would gladly pay $100 for a model that would not break with everyday use. Heck, I've already spent $80 on four of the dang things, what's another $20?? :-) Obviously I love this device and I refuse to be without one in the kitchen, but I only wish it didn't break so easily. I'm not abusing it or overloading it, it's just that Vidalia chose to keep the cost down by making it out of plastic. That's not a bad thing, and it is NOT cheaply made. It's just that even with careful use, it still has a tendency to crack at certain stress points. You have to be very careful when chopping with the Chop Wizard. I've learned this after breaking three of them. :-) I primarily use it for chopping onions, and occasionally potatoes, celery, carrots and bell peppers. It's awesome at turning a big ol' onion into small diced cubes in under a minute. I always quarter my onions before I chop them, or if the onion is large, I will chop it vertically into 6 or 8 wedges. But even then, if the onion skin is a little tough, it may not be able to fully push the outer layer through the slicing grid. You have to really make sure that the onion wedge is not too large, is centered on the grid, and that the onion's skin is not overly tough. Otherwise you run the risk of that tough layer preventing a full closure of the lid, which puts too much pressure on the hinge, and then, well, you're back on Amazon buying another Chop Wizard. The hinge is an obvious stress point because of the leverage involved, but I have to confess I have absolutely no idea why the clear base broke last night. It was weird. Just chopping as usual, nothing felt out of place, but after chopping an onion wedge the base just blew apart. Thinking back, since I mostly use this for chopping onions, every time it broke it was while I was chopping onions, not any other vegetable. So if you are chopping onions, take extreme care on the size of your onion wedge, and if you get resistance when chopping, stop immediately and check to see that the outer layer of onion is not too tough. If it is, remove it and chop it with a knife, or throw it away. Otherwise you may be back on Amazon ordering another. :-) 3
