Customer Reviews

Easy to assemble...great for kids room the adhesive is pretty strong and we put these together in a record time. I paired them with some colored baskets and they look great in the kids room. 4Simple, lightweight, and sturdy, but doesn t come with clips Just what I was looking for. I knew I needed more storage right now but I plan to move in a few months and didn t know what kind of shelves I would want when I moved. These are great because I can change the configuration of them whenever I want. They are easy to put together (each one took about three minutes to assemble) and they are also very light weight, making them easy to move and lift to stack. These cubes are very sturdy and I don t have any concerns about sitting on them or putting books on them. It s worth noting however that they do not come with clips to hold them together. Those need to be bought separate and the only ones I saw came on white. I m probably going to buy some so the cubes don t start to fall off of each other if I accidentally bump into them in the dark. Some other customers have recommended getting more double sided tape to hold them together, but that would limit your options it you wanted to reconfigure them in the future. Overall I think I will be buying more and may stick them together after I move. 4Too fragile to be functional This item is so fragile (it's put together with adhesive strips) it is unclear what it might be useful for. Hours after I assembled it (per the instructions), I picked it up and it fell apart. I could try some Elmer's glue, but even if I get it back together again, I am not sure what I can use it for, as it is too fragile to sustain anything. Stacking? Forget it! 1They are well made and easy to put together I have 3 of these, in different sizes, in my craft room. They are well made and easy to put together. Obviously, use common sense when loading them, especially on the top, but I have books stacked on one of them and a DVR on top of another without issue. I would not load these in such a way as to have heavy items leaning against one side, which is also common sense, if you follow how you build these - heavy items could push a side out. However, stacked work well. I use them to display dolls, so the issue is not there. The color is as pictured. They are expensive, so I only use them to spotlight special dolls, as I could not afford to design a whole shelving unit using these, and I prefer the study IKEA Expedit/Kallax units for heavier/sturdier storage.UPDATE: It is important HOW you stack these. Be sure that you stack them on their sturdiest side (the side where the surface spans all the way across). I made the mistake of stacking them on a weaker side and the bottom one "imploded" or collapsed. One of my boxes has clear packing tape on all sides to try and ensure that that will not happen again, but I did see the reviews before I used these and knew the risk. I have not had problems since. The newest box also has WOODEN pegs instead of cardboard ones for support. The backing board slides in, rather than sticks to the back, so the company has made an effort to improve their product. I have 4 of these. 5Easy organizational tool everyone needs Excellent product, as long as you use it how it is intended. These are made of PAPER. That being said, they're an eco-friendly product that are so easy to assemble and look great. I've got three in my office I purchased over a year ago - two support my monitors for my standing desk. The third supports a plant grow light and some small office plants. I'm careful to wipe up any water drips, and they've not gotten any damage after a year of plants on them, and the grow light hasn't caused the dark espresso wood grain to fade at all. These look nice, weigh nothing and are sturdy enough to trust my monitors on them. I'm about to buy more to use in my closets to add vertical storage space to my upper shelves. 5good utilitarian cube Easy to put together. However, the top kept coming up-adhesive released. Pounded on it with my fist which seemed to help. Will see if adhesive "cures" and stays together. Can't use this as open top cube-backing is only thin cardboard. Seems sturdy enough to stack. HOWEVER, I would not stack these wall high as there is no way to secure them and I would worry about them falling over. I used mine on pre-existing bathroom shelves as a divider/container for stacking towels. I am very happy with it and the white works well for me. If the adhesive on this one cures well, I will probably order one or two more. it was worth the $16 I paid, but I would not pay the stated retail price for this item. 4I was quite happy with the first purchase I'm a little conflicted about this product. I made two separate purchases. The first one, was for two individual cubes and the second one was the quad cube. I was quite happy with the first purchase: the box was delivered on time and wasn't too heavy, none of the pieces were damaged and it was easy to make. Based on this experience, I decided to buy the quad for the rest of my books and some decorative items. The second experience, however, was not good. The three front right corners of the horizontal pieces were badly damaged/essentially missing, even though the box itself was not damaged. Since these pieces are not interchangeable, the damage can't be hidden by putting them at the back. A few of the vertical pieces were also somewhat damaged (not as badly as the horizontal pieces), but since these are interchangeable, I managed to hide most of the issues by placing the damaged pieces at the back. Honestly, had I bought the quad first, I wouldn't have made a second purchase. Right now I'm debating whether I should just throw it out or find some way to fix the corners. I'm attaching the pics of the three corner issues. 2Be careful The adhesive is very strong, so make sure you align correctly before you allow the boards to join. There's no fudging once they touch.Note that the given dimensions, (11.34" deep, 13.4" wide and 12.6" tall), are the outside measurements. The horizontal boards are 5/8" thick, and the vertical boards are 7/8" thick, so the interior space is 11.34" deep, 11.65" wide and 11.35" tall. So if you're using this as a little bookcase, it's too short to accomodate standard ring binders. Get the Cube "Plus", which is 13.75" tall inside. 4I replaced all my bookshelves with 'em (I've uploaded customer photos to complement this review. Check 'em out!)Way Basics storage cubes are made out of recycled cardboard, which makes them quite light at 4.4 pounds each. You build a cube by sticking the pieces together with double-sided adhesive tape from 3M. You might be saying "cardboard?! adhesive?!", and you wouldn't be alone. But, besides the weight, they seem indistinguishable from the standard MDF or particleboard shelves you can buy cheaply nowadays. The colored laminate hides any indication they're made of cardboard and, when they're properly built and have rested for 24 hours, they're quite sturdy. I've moved around cubes full of heavy books without mishap (and by supporting the required backboard, of course). For my house, six individual Storage Cubes and one Storage Cube Plus create a column that rises to about an inch and a half from my ceiling. Though they don't lock together for stacking, wedging something into the remaining space provides enough stability that I've no fears about jumping four- or six-year-olds. (I'm not kidding, either - that was actually part of my stress-testing.)I've had standard department store shelves for years, with lots of wasted vertical space above the book tops. This is both because you only get a certain number of shelves (one of which is hardwired near the middle for stability) and because there tends to be only one optimal way to place them. A single shelf gives you 26.75 inches ( ) of horizontal space. For a three shelf unit, that's a total of 80.25 , or 133.75 for a five shelf unit. With the Way Basics cubes, I can get four shelves in the same space as a three shelf unit. A single cube offers 11.75 of space. For my bedroom's side wall, which had two three shelf units, I had 160.5 of horizontal space. Replacing those shelves with cubes gave me 188 . Since the cubes fit into tinier nooks than the full-blown shelves, I was also able to fit a fifth column on the side, bringing my total up to 235 , nearly 5 feet of extra horizontal space in the same footprint. For floor to ceiling columns, something I could never do with department store bookshelves, the extra space gained is even larger. With six regular cubes and one plus-sized cube per column, I maximize the height for most of the books I own, while still allowing room for the various oversized items I have. The fact that there are more "walls" to cube storage is actually a benefit in disguise: with most cheap bookshelves, your shelves will start to sag over time. It was a habit of mine to flip my shelves, like a mattress, every six months or so. With cubes, every horizontal shelf is reinforced either by the floor or the top of the cube beneath it. I haven't had them long enough to notice any sagging, but my guess is that it won't be a problem. No more mattress flipping!Way Basics storage cubes come in a variety of colors, and I spent many an hour drafting up cute little patterns and schemes in a drawing program. After building a 5 x 7 pattern, I found that you don't really notice the pattern unless you actively look for it. I switched over to single colors per column and they become a bit more noticeable. If color isn't your thing, they also offer black, white, and a few wood grains.I've looked into storage cubes before, but always found them to be too expensive (locking wooden crates that cost a ton to ship), too bookshelve-y (a single unit with nine cubicles defeats a lot of the advantages of cube storage), or too flimsy (full plastic walls that weren't sturdy enough, milk crates that didn't have enough flat surfaces, etc.). The Way Basics cubes have none of these problems, and after two months of testing and three months of completion, I'm quite thrilled with the result! 5Perfect storage cube for the top of my desk! This cube is exactly what I needed to organize the top of my desk! Was very easy to put together. I would have preferred more of a navy blue than the royal blue, but knew that when I ordered it. Gives my desk, which is in my living room a more polished, presentable appearance. I just tuck everything away in the cubes. I think the posting said they can't be turned on their side, and I understand why - the way the top attaches, it needs to be the top, to ensure that the cube stays together. There is an adhesive strip and dowels, but still I wouldn't trust that if I were to turn the cube on it's side. They would fit better on my desk that way, but this is fine. I purchased 2 and am really glad that I did. 5
