Customer Reviews

Horrible for Security Lighting and a Horrible AppI have three light switches and two plugs purchased over the last three years. When I am at home working these devices through my home wireless system and cell phone or tablet they work most of the time. However, this is only half the reason I wanted these contraptions. The other and more important reason is security lighting when I am away from home, especially out of town. I thought I was going to be smart and replace my mechanical light switches with these Belkin plugs and light switches. Belkin says you can operate the lights and plugs from anywhere as long as you have wireless access for your phone or device. When going out of town I normally take my phone and my tablet. I have the Waymo app installed on both but neither work, at all. When at home they worked and yes, I logged into the help sections and followed the directions for resetting them for the wireless but nothing worked. This is the second time I have tried this. The first time I did a firmware upgrade requested by the Belkins so I did it but only one plug showed up on my app much and it didn't work when I tried to use it. There should have been five devices showing up on the app screen. I chalked it up the first time to the firmware upgrade I did while not at home but this last time I didn't perform any upgrades. I left it alone and logged in to the wireless source at my destination. Everything requiring a wireless connection on my devices worked EXCEPT the Belkins junk. I reiterate, they worked just fine at home prior to my trip but away from home, nothing. While it's a nice idea to have this control in the palm of your hand, these Belkins are just plain junk. Don't depend on the Womos for your security lighting because you will be sorely disappointed.I am computer, phone and app savvy. I have been using such devices since the 80's. I build and troubleshoot my equipment and OS's. In my opinion the app leaves a lot to be desired too. Setting each device up to turn on and off when you want is a monumentally tedious task. There has to be a better way to do it. It's just not as user friendly as it could be.If I had to buy these over again I definitely would not. I will go back to the analog mechanical switches until someone comes up with something that actually works.1Bought two - One works , the other doesn'tinstalled both devices without much problems. Instructions are pretty easy to follow. make sure to read and follow all of the instructions and warnings before beginning the installation.first device was installed without any problems. operated as described. a little fickle with connecting to the network WiFi. after about five attempts, the device connected and is able to operate remotely.the second device was installed without a hitch since I figured out all the steps from the first install. BUT, it refuses to connect to the home WiFi. I can find it on the network router app and signal strength is good (actually closer to the WiFi than the first device). I can go through all of the steps using the Wemo app and then it fails to connect. tried for at least 50 times so far for the past week and still no success. the light works by manually engaging the button.keeping these and will try to work with customer support since I doubt I can return the device. sucks that I paid for two and got actually one and a half.2Six Hour installation for two switches 4hrs for first one 2hr for second one. Support B A D - Still awaiting call back promised Would not install. App would crash. Used different phone, app crashed. Tried Android instead of IOS, crashed. Called Tech support, not only were they not useful, they were rude. I did reset on switches, app would crash. Always at same point after it initially connected to phone and all testing completed successfully but when it was to connect to the local wifi (I have a fast strong signal - I am an IT architect so house is setup pretty well.) They told me they would pass it to level 2 support to contact me back in 24-48hrs or whenever my turn in Queue was (could be longer? wow) So then when done, the lady insisted i read her back the number for the ticket they way she gave it to me. (who is serving who here?)Got off phone and was ticked off and was about to remove them so to prove they are terrible customer support i took the challenge to figure it out myself. I did and it is not documented. What i found is that by holding down the LED bar it will turn white (reset). that is in the documentation and didnt work. I then held it longer and it has another after white, it goes back to blue. Nope didnt work. Hold it even longer it goes red. Wait, i got past where i hung up before, ah still didnt work. Even longer it goes dark. Now it connects to my wifi every time i hold it to that point. Each time i tried i deleted the app, rebooted the phone, redownloaded the wemo app. Since there is no documentation on stages of reset I only knew they were different so i decided to do them in pairs to see if that cycled it.Red try/fail, then to only white/try fail worked. It finally connected to my network but alas it wouldnt allow the device to be recognized so i reset after the red reset try/fail, white reset/try fail to the complete dark tried and Bingo, connection and worked as expected.I bought two so Second one should work right? NOPE.I had to go through the exact same reset chain try/fail at red, try fail after white and try after dark, each time removing app from phone and rebooting it to clear artifacts. After that It connected and worked too.In total 6hrs spent on figuring this thing out.Once installed it did work as anticipated and connected both to Alexa. Glad I did because their app LOSES devices! They do eventually come back but they are not accessible through the app, but if connected to Echo they can still be controlled via echo!So after more research it appears that they take your email (required as it is how they connect you in their database) and log with that at their facility your wifi password information. The wifi switches then connect to THEIR servers! This is not a local solution! So the app also connects to their servers and when a device doesnt poll back it drops off the list. That is why alexa can control it despite it not showing in app at the exact time it is still controllable by alexa. Now the product seems solidly built and has potential to be good in later versions (when they get the kinks out of network connection - and according to online posts alot of people fail here and simple remove. I doubt many if any of those fought through as i did)I havent had it drop were alexa could not control it. I have had it drop (many times) where the app is unable to see one or the other switches. The app is nice and clean and is good (when devices show). The most fun part was typing in teh network password over and over for different networks only to have it say it was incorrect when they were correct and eventually worked. This has great potential to be a 5/5 but it did not work out of the box for either and customer support would be more useful if it simply said, leave a number and we will call you back during the following week. (pretty much the same result - and for the record ... I am still waiting on the call back from customer service tech level 2 LOL. Will see how many days it takes to get to me in the Queue. (and if the Queue is that long then... well you draw your own conclusion)I didnt give 1 star because when i got it working it works (well with alexa if i didnt have that and wanted to use the App this would be at 1 star because the device drops are a pain for the app!) so i gave it 2 stars.Pros:Solid builtDoes what you want (if you have echo/alexa)Cons:does not work out of boxPAIN to connect to wifiDrops devices / unable to be reliably controlled from appcustomer service is 0/5 stars (and that is generous)Your home network password is stored and accessible by their employees (so make sure you setup a separate private network for your smart home devices!!!)Bottom line: stick with it long enough and you will get it to work but expect alot of resetting, deleting app, rebooting phone, etc in that process and will take you hour minimumn AFTER you install in the wall.OH, BTW, there is a mac address on back of unit. Make sure to take a picture of that for each device!!!I could have shortcut about 2hrs total if i had that information. Its not on or in box, only on device. Once connected you have it in the app, but you cannot get to that until it is all installed! There was a point I could have entered the mac adderss with email and it would have setup in their servers via the echo skills!Had I only known to get that number, but once installed and breaker back on and was setting up, I really didnt feel like back to breaker box, turning off electricity, removing BOTH from wall far enough to see back through wiring to take photos then reinstall and turning electricity back on.However If i had known how bad the customer service would have been or how long it would have taken to get it to accept my wifi settings (instead of that constant "almost there' feeling before app crashes a litter farther each time) it would have been faster if that worked. So get that MAC information before you begin installation and lights on for clear photo! Then if you have echo/alexa you may be able to get it once it connect to your wifi but is unrecognizable by their app (due to crashes) Since alexa sees device on network, and that device connects to their server, that will likely work.PS: From all i have read these devices store your wifi settings so if you change network password, want to put it on a different "smart home network" or change routers, you WIILL have to go through it again! 2Its ok but it has its flaws, read first before purchasing. I was one of many who couldn't wait for the arrival of this product. Now that I've had it for a few months now I'm very disappointed in its performance. Installation was the of the device was the small as it is for others so I won t speak on it, just know you need to have a neutral wire for this device. As for the design I really think the sliding your finger on the panel is not a good implementation. You have to be really precise when trying to choose a brightness and this is made harder because the dots are in a concave groove that your finger will miss or slide out of a lot of the time, if this was convex instead of a groove I think it would have been much easier. Now the problems I have with this device is the dimming isn t gradual, you can see literally every brightness level change rather than a nice smooth dim. If you drag the slider you will see the light just jump to the set brightness you choose, this is both on the application and on the device itself. The main issue I have with this device in the connectivity issues. It s like every week I have to go and turn my breaker on and off because the device is flashing red. If you reboot your wireless modem when it turns back on the device doesn t connect, if the power goes off it doesn t connect. It s a pain when you have to get up to turn off the lights when you bought it for the sole reason of being lazy! If you live somewhere that has casual power fluctuations this thing will be a pain in your side. I m hoping an update fixes these issues but so far I haven t had an update for the device since I had it.Pros1. When it works it does dim the light2. Can be used when you re not at homeCons1. Dimming notches are hard to use because they are in a concave groove on the device.2. Dimming is not gradual using led light, can see every different brightness level when dimming.3. Constantly loses connectivity and doesn t re-connect unless your cut the power to the device. Will update it any future updates resolve these issues. (except the one hardware thats not fixable)Update: Now everyday when I get home from work and when I wake up the red flashing light is flashing and I have to turn the breaker off and on now. I know there aren't any power failures or anything in my place because my ps4 is in standby mode all the time and if there was any power issues it would be off. This thing is crap, still no updates since I purchased it. 1Good, but don t use in a metal electrical boxWe have about 7-8 Wemo plugs in the house, so it seemed logical that when we wanted a light switch, we d use the same system. In general once the app is correctly paired with the device, we like the convenience of a smart plug/ switch. We have also integrated them into our Google Smart Home, so we can say Hey Google, turn on the couch light , which is convenient. Doing so does not require any programming (IFTTT, etc.) so that s nice.In terms of fit and finish, they hit the mark. it s well manufactured and components look good. I have two concerns, however:1) getting it online with your network remains a challenge. All previous Wemo plugs have shared this issue. The firmware shipped from the factory is usually quite out of date, and I went through several upgrades trying to get it to connect to my network. As was the case with the plugs, it seemed to hang during the upgrade process, and I had to bite the bullet and cut power/ restore, and hope for the best. Fortunately, it worked out, and I was able to connect it.2). Unlike the plugs, the switch installs in site the outlet box (no surprise). If your outlet box is metal, though, it is not as reliable as the plugs are. As I said, we re running 7-8 plugs throughout our home, including one that it right below this switch. We are running a Meraki router (Cisco s small business product). All of the plugs work flawlessly, whether connected to the primary router or a relay access point. However, this light switch is somewhat less reliable. There are some days where it just doesn t come on. I ve confirmed all programming, and it s correct. When I ve run it hanging outside the box as an experiment, it worked fine. But when installed in the metal box, the WiFi signal is just attenuated enough that it fails a about 1 day out of 12. Installed location is approximately 14 away from the WiFi router, and the signal measures very clean, so it s not the WiFi. Only conclusion I can reach is that the metal box interferes with the signal just enough to make it less reliable.3Stopped working - THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICEWorked for a while. I'm not really sure how long because it was on my porch light and supposedly working automatically according to internet sunrise/sunset schedules. I only noticed it wasn't working because I changed my router and needed to change wifi passwords.Coudn't get a signal from it. Tried everything.Emailed customer service no reply.Chatted with them. They spent 45 minutes with me before they asked me to disassemble my light switch. I had an electrician put it in. I PROBABLY could have done it, but after 45 minutes, after which they asked me to turn off and on my phone and then find another phone to check with, I wasn't about to start disassembling stuff.Getting an RMA from them was like pulling teeth. Its been 10 minutes and I still don't have an email from them about the RMA (which is a whole other department that requires approval). This is the kind of service I'd expect from a tiny chinese company no one has ever heard of. Now that I know Belkin is like this, you can believe I'll never buy anything from them again.1Buyer BewareThe first Wemo item I bought was the smart plug and it worked so well I added the light starter kit and extra bulbs, 2 mini plugs and 2 wall switches. Then they began failing starting with the bulb kit; they could not connect to my network. After many calls to Belkin I was told this device was EOL, which I was told, after asking, was End Of Life. Scratch that one. Then I began having problems with one of the wall switches. It refused to reset after a power failure, requiring a manual reset. This defeated the purpose of the switch since I wanted to use it when I was away from home. Scratch that one too. Then the smart plug wouldn't reset and I've been unable to get it working again after a power outage 8 months ago. I keep trying each time the firmware is updated with no luck. And this was always the most reliable of the devices. Scratch that one. After spending over $200 I have the two mini plugs and one wall switch working. I keep my fingers crossed on them.It appears Wemo devices are poorly engineered since I've added a Leviton wall switch and connection was almost automatic. The Phillips Hue bridge connected quickly too. The Hue bridge has connected after each power outage since installation. The Leviton has only been installed for three weeks so I'll have to wait on it.I live in an area where outages occur frequently and I need a dependable smart system. Wemo is not it.1Defective device - HORRIBLE tech support and replacement issues - Just say no. Had no problem installing, connecting to iPhone app and updating firmware. All downhill from there. As often as every 25 minutes, it just locks up/freezes and will not react to pressing the button on the dimmer or to commands from the app. Normally you would reset the device by pressing and holding the button but since it does not recognize the button, this doesn't work and the only way to get it functioning again is to turn circuit breaker off and back on. Which, of course, affects other things on the circuit. After two days of chat with Belkin (at first they wanted me to pay an electrician to come check my connections!!!) they finally agreed the item was defective. Have to PAY to ship it back to them to get a replacement. Would return to Amazon but item currently not available from Amazon except from sellers charging $32 - $52 MORE than I paid originally (I paid Mfr Retail- 79.99) - ridiculous situation. Wasted ridiculous amount of time on this. Oh, and if you can get anything on Belkin website to work right, you are doing better than me - only browser that sort of worked with their tech support and other features was Chrome and that was still quirky. Save yourself a lot of hassle. Don't go down this rabbit hole. UPDATE: Replacement doesn't work either!!! It is in same room as WiFi router and the ONLY time I can access it from the phone app is when my phone is connected to same wifi - otherwise I get "Device not detected." Going to trash this wasted money device and Give TP-Link a try. 1Best Wifi Dimmer I've ever used (and owned!) This switch never lets me down. I have other brands of Wifi switches that work on and off with Alexa and Google Home. This switch works every....single....time.I won't go into too much detail. It was very easy to install because it comes with the colored wires that I simply matched to my outlet. Because the wires come from this device, I just had to pop the cap on and voila, that's it - vs. other switches where I have to take the wires, re-twist or shave them and put them into a slot in the switch.Software is dead easy to use. You can't possibly mess up installation. Has some pretty nice modes and settings for automation after the fact. One mode I really like is auto-off mode. My home is semi automated. I have Amazon Echos AND Google Homes in almost every bedroom. I have wifi bulbs all over the place. Every closet and bathroom has an occupancy/vacancy sensor which turns on when someone goes in, stays on for as long as they're in there and then goes off shortly after they exit. You can't really use an occupancy sensor with a bedroom, well, you can, technically. You can use something that you manually turn on and will stay on for as long as it detects motion and turns off automatically when you leave. I wanted a dimmer for my master bedroom and it's very nice to know that I can enable this sort of behavior with this device when I want it.This is a bit more expensive than others you may see out there but in many ways, it's very much worth it. I will wait until it goes on sale and buy one for every bedroom in my home eventually. 5Connecting to phone never worksLove the actual switch on the wall. Just a simple tap turns on/off. HATE HATE that it never works from my phone. I have a new current Android. It won't connect or the lights switch device is updating or today it said can't find device. So aggravated. It is the reason why I bought it. It has worked twice. There are a lot less expensive light switches if that is all it's going to do.1Buy at own risk and remember to take your blood pressure medsa wonderful thanksgiving going to hell. Spent 2 hours trying to get decent wiring directions for connecting to single black single white and ground connection. Still not sure is perfect but worked for others apparently. Basically Belkin answers are crap like get an electrician. Very disappointed as i have always been a fan of their products.Install failed in connection of phone app to device now device basically cannot connect to anything and cannot been seen on network. Reset switch, phone, turned off power, nothing works just blinking green wifi symbol then blinking orange wifi symbol then solid green then poof.My favorite answer from them is to move it closer to router, a light switch hahahahahaha BTW my wifi is super strong so that aint it either.1They don't seem to work as described - AMAZON, are you listening???!!!I have 7 of these switches. At first, they all work. Then, over time, the cloud server, that keeps track of them when you are out of your house, starts to "forget" the switches one by one. I reset my router - no help (no surprise, since my IoT sprinkler system, thermostat, Sonos speaker system, security system, and security camera system have NEVER had a problem, to they are working just fine), reset/reinstalled my switches, deleted and downloaded the WeMo app, etc, all to no avail. Clearly, since the devices work fine when I'm connected to my home WiFi, but not when I'm away, the problem is with the app and/or cloud system. I suspect Belkin doesn't want to spend the money to get their app and/or cloud system working properly, but I don't know. I can't imagine why they wouldn't want to fix this. Some users say they work fine if you assign a physical MAC address to each one . Maybe they do, but that is not what these devices say that you need to do, and I wouldn't have a clue about how to do this.In the meantime, in my personal opinion, you should avoid these WeMo products until they work through these issues. They work fine while you are connected to your home WiFi, but, otherwise, they do not.1Bought one and like it so much I kept buying more. This light switch and the other outlet style plug has worked reliably for over 3 years. There would be occasional hiccups like power interruptions that cause the switches to restart, but they have never failed on me. However, you are at the mercy of your internet connection and if you happen to be away while the network crashes, you won't be able to communicate with the switches. The daily programs will continue to work regardless.Setting this up properly does require some networking knowledge and how to properly implement security. The switches both work on hidden and broadcasted SSID Wifi networks. Half of my switches work on the hidden SSID and the other half are connected to the broadcasted SSID. They do support security password keys, but if you want an extra layer of protection, turn on your router/basestation's MAC address control to enable only recognized and authorized devices access to your wireless network.I have assigned static IP address to these switches by way of their MAC addresses, to avoid IP conflict when power cycling happens to my router. This is the general rule for all of my stay-at-home devices.Update 2017My eleventh switch will be arriving tomorrow. The first switch I bought in 2013 is still working to this day. All switches are still working reliably.Works perfectly with NEST thermostat, Amazon Echo and IFTTT.Update Dec 20171. The WEMO App first lets you name each switch and then allows you to set up "Rules" for unattended on/off times to a switch or a group of switches. So that a switch or a group of switches will turn on/off at a scheduled time.2. The Amazon Alexa App allows you to first create intelligent named "Groups" of switches, such as "Exterior Lights", "Interior Lights", "Living Room Lights", so you can use voice control to address them in a meaningful way. "Alexa, turn off Living Room Lights" or "Alexa, turn off All Lights."3. IFTTT will integrate all the functionality of your smart devices with WEMO and ALEXA (NEST and others too). i.e. The GPS in a smart phone can be used to create an invisible fence that can turn WEMO switches on/off as you pass in/out of its perimeter. My living room lights and exterior lights come on when I'm about half a mile from home. NEST can also sense I'm coming home and start cooling/heating the house. The are thousands of "recipes" ready to use. With these three Apps together, there are thousands of possibilities to automate your home if you are willing to experiment. These are just some of the ways I use mine.Update March 20181. Recently purchased the Wemo Mini Smart Plug to make the uplights in the kitchen cabinets smart. Set up was easy but I first had to add the switch's MAC address to my basestation before connecting to one of my home's SSIDs.2. That makes twelve switches and all are active and functioning as you can see.3. The Wemo App is very laggy, but luckily with voice activation, I rarely launch the app except to take screenshots. I use Alexa's voice recognition instead. The Mac version of the app needs to support higher resolution displays like the Android one does.5Great Product, but You Need to Know its Limitations! These work pretty seamlessly with my wireless router and Alexa. You should expect to do a factory reset on them after the initial installation, though. So far, I have had to do that for all three I have installed. Also, be sure you have a neutral wire for your intended switches, or don't buy these. They require it. Be sure your switches are in close enough proximity to the intended wireless network as well, and install only on the non-5G network if that is an option for you. Alexa and the switches must be on the same network. The back of the switch is a bit bulky, so expect to do a little wire manipulation / trimming to fit these in a multi-switch box. Finally, these are single-pole, meaning you can ONLY use them on single switch lights / fans / etc. If you understand these things, then you are good to go! (Oh, and I routinely install these upside down on purpose, because the factory reset switches are easier to access. They are on the bottom of the switch between the switch and the cover.)5Worked very well, instructions were great This dimmer installed without a lot of fuss. One may have trouble with swapping the live input (black) and output (red) wires, as a "normal" dimmer may work fine with either of those switched, as the dimmer just changes pulse width, which would work on either input or output. This is a relatively complex dimmer electrically, so the order matters. The instructions were good as far as troubleshooting; if they are reversed the dimmer just won't work.ADDED:Also got the 3-way switch:So, to start, this is one of the more complex installations, with FIVE wires. You do need the neutral wire, usually white, which is often not used on a regular switch. On a recently built home, this will be there, but on an older one it will not.The wires in your wall may be various colors, in my case 2 black, white, red, green. The switch has white, blue, red, black, and green. So, not a match, but the instructions were very helpful in identifying what was what. It went in easily and worked on the first try.The Alexa integration was basically automatic after using the Wemo app. I'm pretty happy with it. The 3-way switch seems to have improved readiness versus the dimmer, which sometimes has a "miss" with Alexa, working right afterward. You do only need 1 switch for a 3-way circuit. This connected to the app just fine, and you can choose whether you have incandescent, CFL, or LED bulbs, and the dimmer calibrated to my LEDs instantly. There are some limitations on current, so really you're not going to run 10 incandescent lights off this; 1-5 should be OK in just about all cases.I've also paired it with Alexa and Google Home without issue. It worked just as it should. One thing to keep in mind is that the dimmer does require a "neutral" wire; this is usually the white one behind your wall (and the black one is the "hot" line). Most light switches do not really need this, as they have the live input, output, and ground (green wire). My old dimmer did not use the neutral, and this line was sort of buried way back in the wall, with no lead. I had to tap into it to make one. Not a big deal really, but something to be aware of. It is noted on the package, so that's fair. It would probably be good to make this more prominent in the listing, though, as installing this dimmer to replace a switch or dimmer with no neutral line starts pushing this into a "medium" difficulty job rather than an "easy" one.In terms of behavior, it does brighten and dim when you turn these on/off. I'd say it's about 0.25 seconds to turn on full brightness, and 0.5 seconds to go from full brightness to off. I didn't expect this, but it's fine, and is NOT like the first-generation LED bulbs that had a noticeable delay in turning on. 5
