Easy to clean.
This is good quality, thick metal, and high polished stainless. The lack of a ring on the bottom makes it easy to clean with water. I would never buy another kind after using this.
5Great Stainless Steel Colander
I saw a similar colander in a NY Times Article entitled "A No-Frills Kitchen Still Cooks" (which is very inspiring for people with a tiny budget/kitchen and/or minimalist lifestyle). This colander is flat-bottomed for easier use and storage, and has a lot of holes! I like it. I mostly use it to strain pasta, homemade stocks, and pots of braised meat. I will say it loses a star because it's solid stainless steel, but was (and priced as such) cheaply cut out, so the holes on the inside have a little lip. This means it retains just a little bit more liquid than other colanders I've used. Overall, not a dealbreaker. Great colander.
4Five Stars
fabulous tool for poaching eggs. strain the liquid white first and then lower the eggs into gently simmering water.
5Nice smooth design.
The small holes drain well but hold "stuff" back that should be held back. The bottom has rounded "feet" that don't scratch surfaces but hold the bottom up a little. Good tool.
5Nice but is 12" overall not 11"
Good unit but it is 12" overall and 11" inside. Not a problem unless you need it to fit inside something.
4Awkward compressions on the bottom
This arrived dented, which could be fixed with a replacement, but it also has four compressions on the bottom that look intentional but are not attractive. It looks like someone took a hole punch and pushed in certain areas; it is not really raised, just compressed. Another reviewer said "bottom has rounded 'feet' that don't scratch surfaces but hold the bottom up a little" and that might be what the compressions are attempting to be, but they are not deep enough to really hold this up enough for it to function like a steamer and more importantly, they do not look nice. Aside from that, this colander is a good size (11 inches) with small holes (2.5 mm) that would make it perfect for rinsing quinoa or rice or (slowly) draining pasta. I like that it is stainless steel rather than aluminum or another unknown metal. However, the compressions at the bottom make an otherwise attractive and well made product look damaged and poorly made.
2Reasonably well made and fits into the top of a 5 gal bucket.
For those with "interesting" needs, this 11 inch colander fits perfectly into the top of a standard 5 gal bucket. You can get these buckets anywhere, including Home Depot or from restaurants. Insert the colander, put an industrial sized coffee filter inside the colander, pour murky water through it, and you get clear water ready for purification.
