Customer Reviews

Strange MountingFirst off, it's a nice switch, as far as switching goes. But this has the strangest mounting setup I've ever seen. I'm a commercial electrician. Bought this to try for a project in my shop. The average DIYer would have no idea how to properly/safely mount this without a few trips to Home Depot and a lot of time spent.Overall I would recommend a small breaker style disconnect or a motor starting switch over this, it just isn't designed well. 3Great safety switch, but does not fit standard electrical boxAs another reviewer has indicated, this switch is probably intended for mounting in a panel. I managed to squeeze it into an extra deep utility box. I had to use a grommet in lieu of the standard box clamp and could not fit wire nut connections within the box (I soldered wires together and covered with shrink tubing).I'm using the switch for a 1950's vintage Craftsman table saw. Back in those days, quality was the first consideration, safety was the last. The switch for turning on the saw was a toggle mounted on the motor at the back of the table saw. I decided it was not a good idea to reach over the blade to turn the saw on and off, so I mounted this switch in a convenient location on the side of the saw.It works great. The protected "on" switch makes it practically impossible to turn the saw on accidentally. To turn it off, all you have to do is slap your palm against the switch ---- quick and easy to do in an emergency. 4Definitely intended for heavy duty applicationsThis one was a bit interesting. I really wanted a switch with a paddle stop and 220V (mains in New Zealand is 220V). Unfortunately none of the vendors both had such an item AND would ship here. I eventually settled on this unit being the closest that would handle 220V. Interestingly the same vendor also has paddle stop versions but will not ship those to New Zealand... weird.Anyway, this is a sturdy switch. It does take a reasonable amount of force to depress the buttons but I'm hoping that might ease off with use.Size wise it is minorly (but not significantly so) smaller than a standard sized flush plate. What sets it apart is its depth. Its much deeper than a normal surface mounting box. This is due to the mechanical switching mechanism in the back. It'll be a while till I get to using it (I'm building a router table) but I'm expecting to have to construct a customised housing for it.Other than that, it seems sturdy and fit for purpose. 4Great Addition to any Large MachineI'm rebuilding my 1966 Quincy air compressor including all the plumbing and electrical. I wanted a better switch that what I had which was a commercial on/off house switch. I found this switch on Amazon and bought it. It works for both 115/230v applications. You will need a deep gang box; the switch will NOT fit in a regular gang box. I couldn't find one at my local hardware store so found an extra deep weather box on Amazon. I had to modify the box slightly with a file so the switch would fit into the box. You will also need to purchase long screws the same size/thread that will fit the box. The existing screws on the switch are too big and will not fit. 5Good switch for the money but horrible mounting designI bought this switch to have a master shut off for my Bridgeport mill VFD. The VFD stays energized without a switch, even when I turn the unit off on its control panel. As many reviewers have said, this switch is far more difficult to mount in an electrical box than it should be. Below are some photos of my mounting. I used a 4", 2 gang electrical box with a mud ring. The mud ring gives two advantages for this switch. First, it allows you to mount the switch while looking at the back side to see how the screws are aligning. This is helpful since you'll need to bend one of the tabs on the mud ring because the switch holes do not align properly! Second, it provides more room/depth for this very deep switch and makes tucking the wires in a bit easier. You'll need to throw away the two metric screws, lock washers and nuts that come with the switch and replace with standard #6 switch screws, which every other manufacturer in the U.S. uses.... You'll likely strip out the screw used on the tab that you have to bend but I was successful in getting a single use out of the screws. If you need to remove the screw on the bent tab, you'll likely need to replace it, to get proper toque (since you bugger up the threads after one attempt). I went through a few screws getting comfortable that the torque was sufficient. Last comment, the wire hold down screw mounts only have about two threads in what looks like a soft brass alloy. If you torque these too much, you'll strip the mount, making the switch pretty useless. The engineering of this switch is commensurate with its price and if you can overcome the mounting issues, it's a decent switch. 3Turns stuff off and on WOWI didn't give it 5 stars because of the metric screws. Now for the real review, I used this on an old cast iron table saw. Mounted it in a mud ring, had to file the tabs for the mud ring a little to get the screws to line up, had to change the screws to american. mounted the mudring in a standard box, no problem w/ clearance.I believe one review that said the switch was hard to mount in a box, and you needed to be an expert or some such. I cant speak for using this as a direct replacement for a built in switch. but to use it to turn on a tool, if you cant figure out how to put this in a standard box, and mount it someplace maybe you shouldnt use power tools...just sayin...AGAIN...turns stuff on, turns stuff off...WOW 4This switch is for some BIG machineButtons are clunky and require a LOT of force to mechanically engage them.Maybe that's a good thing with a really big machine but I can't imagine finding this sort of switch comfortable to use on a regular basis. The Woodstock large paddle switch is much more to my liking (and cheaper!) 3Great Switch; Strange MountingBought this to replace an old switch on an early 90's model radial arm saw. I received it today, and as many of the reviews said, it does not fit a "standard" rounded metal electrical box. It does, however, fit a standard metal square corner box.I did notice something strange about the included screws though. Standard size screws for electrical boxes are 6-32, however the screws that came with the switch were M4 x .7, a metric thread which doesn't fit standard electrical boxes. Easy fix, replaced with 6-32 x 3/4" screws and matching nuts and lock washers and it fit right in.Love the switch though, and the fact that it's two pole is great because I can run 220V tools, or in the case of an old drill press I'm rebuilding, the drill press and the work light can be both controlled by the one switch. Only reason I give it 4/5 stars is because of the slight hassle of having to replace the screws.Highly recommend this product. 4Nice quality, easy to use DPST pushbutton switchFirst things first: this is a simple double pole, single throw pushbutton switch. Push START to turn something on, it stays on till you push STOP. Since it is double pole, it open both lines in a 240V circuit. Both the START and STOP buttons have a nice feel and action, with an obvious detent or bump that tells you the switch has opened or closed. The terminals on the back are clamp type -- tighten the screw to clamp the wire. It has a lockout passthru behind the start button, so you can prevent the switch from turning on.I installed this switch on a Delta DJ-15 jointer, replacing the original, which failed after 15 years. (This switch looks like an exact replacement, which was nice but not necessary.) I did not have any trouble with the mounting, once I replaced the metric screws with 6-32 screws. For my jointer, the switch passes thru a cutout in a sheet metal panel, with a single gang "handy box" behind the panel. However, without that panel, mounting would not be as easy.Delta wanted about $60 for a replacement part; Amazon was $15. Thanks for reading, and I will try to answer any questions that come up.UPDATE after 18 months: the switch still works great. It probably has a thousand cycles on it (which is not all that much) and it still has a nice feel to it. I don't even notice that it is new anymore :) 5Very Nice On Off Push Button SwitchI bought this Woodstock D4157 push button switch for my 1950's era Craftsman Model 113.27970 10-inch Heavy Duty Table Saw that I am currently restoring. Wiring it up was easy, but as others have stated, you will need a deeper box to mount the switch into. I had a plastic outlet box that was deep enough to mount this switch into so I used it. I mounted the switch up in front of the machine for obvious safety reasons. Originally, Craftsman had the switch mounted directly on the motor in back of the machine, but I felt it needed to be mounted up front in case I needed to shut the machine down quickly in case of an emergency. The push buttons on this switch work great. I am very happy with this purchase. Will be purchasing another one of these switches for a new Rockwell/Delta 14 inch band saw the company I work for just purchased. 5
