Customer Reviews

Perfect for sous videI purchased this for my first attempt at sous vide cooking. It has worked so well. I have full control over the amount of suction to apply to the bag. What really makes this product so amazing is that I can fill a bag with whatever I'm cooking with liquid and only remove the air while leaving the liquid! I just place the bag upright against the wall and apply the suction horizontally rather than vertically like if it was on the counter. I remove all of the air plus a little liquid and voila! As far as I'm concerned, this is as good as the expensive chamber sealers with a little less convenience. I use it all the time and it has held up really well. I haven't used it in the dishwasher for fear that the heat would warp the plastic. I just give it a quick rinse and dry it off right after use. So glad I found this! 5Pump with Quart Bags5 stars so far. I opened this box and tried the pump with quart packages today. It was very impressive how these bags "shrunk" around the material inside, in this case deer jerky, just like my electric powered foodsaver. I did read a review from another person that says the bags leak air in over time back in thru the little flapper into the bag. I will test and report back. It is impressive, like I said before, how much suction the little hand pump develops and also how much air it sucks out of the bags. I bought this for packaging survival gear and food that I want to open and then re-seal. I simply cannot be lugging my electric foodsaver (which is a very good product) everywhere with me. Another reviewer said he wanted to vacuum seal salads. I have experimented with lots of different stuff. I bought the canning jar lid adapters, both wide and narrow mouth, and I have sealed almost everything I could think of in glass canning jars. They actually seal, with no heat, and creat a seal so good you have to break the seal with a spoon just like a regularly "heat-canned" jar. My favorites to do were cereal, trail mix, and snacks like potato chips. I tried to vacuum seal ice cream in order to avoid freezer-burnt ice cream when stored for long periods, but it didn't work out too well, lol. The vacuum sealer started sucking the ice cream up the vacuum tube...lol. Anyway, I know I'm supposed to be reviewing this product, and I give it 5 stars--for now. 5As good as a FoodsaverI love these things, and have bought several because I'm worried Ziploc will stop making them. I used to have a Foodsaver (for which I paid $140). When I found these Ziploc bags it's as if a magical fairy riding a unicorn had brought it to me. : ) It's true that it does look a little...naughty...when you are using the pump to get the air out, but that's beside the point. Fill the bag (but not too full), zip it, lay it down with the circle area up, put the pump on the circle and pump out the air. I mean, these guys should work for NASA. You NEVER find something so inexpensive that works this well. I had dry items in them for months at a time without the bag losing any of the vacuum. The only reason I didn't review them earlier is that I don't want everyone to buy them all up so that there are none left for me. If you are considering the much more expensive Foodsaver, save your money and get these instead. 5Good Item, With CautionI was excited to try this product as my old FoodSaver device died and I thought it would be easier to use a pump than using an electric one. I was happy with the actual pump itself as it was easy to use and it actually worked as it was supposed to work, but that's when the other problem arose. I'm not sure if the 3 bags that came with the pump were old or damaged in some fashion, but I used the pump and got the vacuum seal the night I received it from Amazon and I woke the next morning to find the 'vacuum seal' didn't last as it claims it can. So if it was just my specific starter kit that the bags provided with the pump that were possibly defective in some fashion, I'd highly recommend the pump!*update*The pump was not the issue and has worked on other pump sealing ziploc bags. I believe the bags must've been sitting a little too long for them to properly create a seal. 3DON'T BUY - Spare bags discontinuedDO NOT BUY ... ZIPLOC NO LONGER MAKES THE BAGS FOR THISA great product that I love, but as soon as I tried to buy new bags I discovered that they are only available at a crazy price. So, I contacted Ziploc and they told me that this system has been discontinued and replaced by their own vacuum sealing machine that uses open ended bags. 1Ziploc Vacuum Starter Kit, 3-Quart Bags, 1-PumpThis is JUST ok. It's not something I would rely on for long term vacuum storage. Maybe weekend trips or something temporary and nothing that would be a health hazard if it didn't stay sealed. I think if the pump was made of more robust material, metal or harder plastic, maybe it could generated enough vacuum to be a worthwhile product, but I'd rather have something with some more strength for this job. It's not even as strong as a large syringe, which would even be better. All in all, it's probably going to be used for trail mix and such rather than main food storage. 3Terrible Product.I purchased this product hoping that it would keep some things in the fridge (lettuce) fresher longer once they have been opened at a cheaper price.Well, not so. I put a few different items (ranging from lettuce to cubed chicken) into these bags all filled about half full as to ensure that the seal would not break due to the bag being overfilled. I sat at my kitchen table and filled 15 different bags of varying sizes and pumped them all until they were free of air. Within 12 hours, some of the bags had already lost their seals and within 36 hours all of the bags had completely lost their seals.I was so disgusted with the poor quality of this product that I contacted Ziploc via email to inform them of what happened with the product they manufactured. They responded with a basic generic statement that they appreciated my input and would route it to the appropriate department. About a week later, I received coupons for more of the bags in the mail. Why would I want more of these even if they were free?My advice is to skip this product. It's a waste of time and money. I'd recommend saving your money and researching/purchasing another vacuum sealer. 1Great little vacuum pumpBought this just for the pump. I vacuum seal Mason jars all of the time to keep things fresh and I hate pulling out my vacuum sealer just to seal a jar. You have to have the Food Saver wide mouth or regular mouth jar sealer attachments in order to seal jars with this. Just put the item in the jar you're trying to seal, put an undamaged canning lid of the appropriate size on your jar, put the appropriate jar sealer attachment on top, then place the pump over the opening on the jar sealer attachment and start pumping. You'll hear the lid pop several times while pumping and after about 15 or so pumps, take off the jar sealer attachment and your lid should be vacuumed to the jar. Make sure the rim of the jar is clean and the canning lid is undamaged for successful vacuum sealing. FYI for those who don't know, this does not take the place of canning or refrigeration. If something needs to be refrigerated, it still does. 5Simple and FunctionalEasy and basic. Just what I wanted. I wanted something that could store wedges of cheese after I opened the package. It's frustrating to discard cheese due to mold, which can occur rather quickly after the package is opened. Since only 3 vacuum bags came with the pump, I used another small Zip Lock bag, unzipped, to place inside of a vacuum Zip Lock bag. Then I pump the vacuum bag closed. This way the food never touches the vacuum bag and I can reuse it. The vacuum works great. It pulls out all the air, just like a fresh new package. 5Ziploc Starter kit is just what I wantedThe Ziploc vacuum pump is an inexpensive way to preserve your perishable foods. I bought this mainly for the pump as the bags are very iffy when it comes to holding a seal. As you have probably experienced, fresh strawberries only last a few days in your refrigerator. Using the bags to store the strawberries, mushes them when you pump the air out. What I do is put the strawberries in a canning jar or an empty spaghetti sauce jar. I pierce the metal top with a small nail and put a piece of electrical tape over the hole. I tighten the top down and pump the air out with the Ziploc pump. This procedure is available for viewing on YouTube. My strawberries last around 2 weeks. This makes the Ziploc pump well worth the money. It's paid for itself with 2 purchases of strawberries alone. I also use it for onions and other fruits and vegetables. Just take out what you need, tighten the lid back down and pump out the air again. You won't get "outer space" vacuum with this cheap plastic vacuum pump but it certainly is sufficient for food preservation. 4
